ALG gravitational instantons and Hitchin moduli spaces, I: Torelli parameters

This is the first of two papers which together prove that the $12$-parameter family of parabolic $SU(2)$-Hitchin moduli spaces on the four-punctured sphere are all ALG gravitational instantons of type D4, and hence are asymptotic to $(\mathbb{C} \times T^2_\tau)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ at infinity. The elliptic modulus $\tau$ is determined by the cross-ratio of the four points. In this first paper, we consider each Hitchin moduli space corresponding to an allowable set of parabolic data and compute its Torelli parameters. There is a $12$-parameter family of Hitchin moduli spaces corresponding to different parabolic data, and we show that these realize all possible allowable Torelli parameters. In the companion paper, we we will show there that all of the Hitchin moduli spaces studied here are indeed ALG of type $D_4$, and consequently that every ALG-$D_4$ gravitational instanton can be realized as a Hitchin moduli space. Altogether, this will give the first verification of any case of the Modularity Conjecture: that all ALG gravitational instantons with tangent cone $\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}_2$ can be realized as Hitchin moduli spaces with their natural associated $L^2$ metrics.

Transgressive Harmonic Maps and SU(1,1) Self-Duality Solutions

We establish a duality between harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces to hyperbolic 3-space $\mathbb{H}^3$ and harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces to de Sitter three-space $\operatorname{dS}_3$, best viewed as a generalized Gauss map. On the gauge theoretic side, it matches SU(2) and SU(1,1) solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations via a signature flip along an eigenline of the Higgs field. Reversing this operation typically produces singular solutions, occurring where the eigenline becomes lightlike. Motivated by explicit model examples and this singular behavior, we extend this duality to a class of transgressive harmonic maps $f:M\to \mathbb{S}^3$: these are harmonic on the hemispheres equipped with the hyperbolic metric, intersect the equator orthogonally, and have vanishing Hopf differential along the crossing set. We construct large families by gluing and analyze their regularity, and as an application obtain $\tau$-real negative sections of the Deligne--Hitchin moduli space of arbitrarily large energy that are not twistor lines.

All 81 crepant resolutions of a finite quotient singularity are hyperpolygon spaces

We demonstrate that the linear quotient singularity for the exceptional subgroup G in Sp(4,C) of order 32 is isomorphic to an affine quiver variety for a 5-pointed star-shaped quiver. This allows us to construct uniformly all 81 projective crepant resolutions of the quotient singularity C4/G as hyperpolygon spaces by variation of GIT quotient, and we describe both the movable cone and the Namikawa Weyl group action via an explicit hyperplane arrangement. More generally, for the n-pointed star shaped quiver, we describe completely the birational geometry for the corresponding hyperpolygon spaces in dimension 2n - 6; for example, we show that there are 1684 projective crepant resolutions when n = 6. We also prove that the resulting affine cones are not quotient singularities for n >= 6.

Asymptotic Geometry of the Moduli Space of Parabolic $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-Higgs Bundles

Given a generic stable strongly parabolic $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-Higgs bundle $(\mathcal{E}, \varphi)$, we describe the family of harmonic metrics $h_t$ for the ray of Higgs bundles $(\mathcal{E}, t \varphi)$ for $t\gg0$ by perturbing from an explicitly constructed family of approximate solutions $h_t^{\mathrm{app}}$. We then describe the natural hyperK\"ahler metric on $\mathcal{M}$ by comparing it to a simpler "semi-flat" hyperK\"ahler metric. We prove that $g_{L^2} - g_{\mathrm{sf}} = O(\mathrm{e}^{-\gamma t})$ along a generic ray, proving a version of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke's conjecture. Our results extend to weakly parabolic $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-Higgs bundles as well. In the case of the four-puncture sphere, we describe the moduli space and metric more explicitly. In this case, we prove that the hyperk\"ahler metric is ALG and show that the rate of exponential decay is the conjectured optimal one, $\gamma=4L$, where $L$ is the length of the shortest geodesic on the base curve measured in the singular flat metric $|\mathrm{det}\, \varphi|$.

Homogeneous spinor flow

We study the spinor flow on homogeneous spin manifolds. After providing the general setup we discuss the homogeneous spinor flow in dimension 3 and on almost abelian Lie groups in detail. As a further example the flag manifold in dimension 6 is treated.

Asymptotic Geometry of the Hitchin Metric

We study the asymptotics of the natural $L^2$ metric on the Hitchin moduli space with group $G = \mathrm{SU}(2)$. Our main result, which addresses a detailed conjectural picture made by Gaiotto, Neitzke and Moore \cite{gmn13}, is that on the regular part of the Hitchin system, this metric is well-approximated by the semiflat metric from \cite{gmn13}. We prove that the asymptotic rate of convergence for gauged tangent vectors to the moduli space has a precise polynomial expansion, and hence that the the difference between the two sets of metric coefficients in a certain natural coordinate system also has polynomial decay. Very recent work by Dumas and Neitzke indicates that the convergence rate for the metric is exponential, at least in certain directions.

Holonomy rigidity for Ricci-flat metrics

On a closed connected oriented manifold $M$ we study the space $\mathcal{M}_\|(M)$ of all Riemannian metrics which admit a non-zero parallel spinor on the universal covering. Such metrics are Ricci-flat, and all known Ricci-flat metrics are of this form. We show the following: The space $\mathcal{M}_\|(M)$ is a smooth submanifold of the space of all metrics, and its premoduli space is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold. The holonomy group is locally constant on $\mathcal{M}_\|(M)$. If $M$ is spin, then the dimension of the space of parallel spinors is a locally constant function on $\mathcal{M}_\|(M)$.

Teichm\"uller theory for conic surfaces

In this paper we develop a systematic deformation theory for conic constant curvature metrics on a closed surface when all cone angles are less than $2\pi$; in particular, we define and study the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}^{\mathrm{conic}}_{\gamma,k}$ of conic constant curvature metrics on a surface of genus $\gamma$ with $k$ conic points. The methods here are adopted from higher dimensional global analysis, generalizing Tromba's approach to the study of the standard Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}_\gamma$. The main new ingredient is the theory of elliptic conic operators.

Limiting configurations for solutions of Hitchin's equation

We review recent work on the compactification of the moduli space of Hitchin's self-duality equation. We study the degeneration behavior near the ends of this moduli space in a set of generic directions by showing how limiting configurations can be desingularized. Following ideas of Hitchin, we can relate the top boundary stratum of this space of limiting configurations to a Prym variety. A key r\^ole is played by the family of rotationally symmetric solutions to the self-duality equation on $\mathbb C$, which we discuss in detail here.

Ends of the moduli space of Higgs bundles

We associate to each stable Higgs pair $(A_0,\Phi_0)$ on a compact Riemann surface $X$ a singular limiting configuration $(A_\infty,\Phi_\infty)$, assuming that $\det \Phi$ has only simple zeroes. We then prove a desingularization theorem by constructing a family of solutions $(A_t,t\Phi_t)$ to Hitchin's equations which converge to this limiting configuration as $t \to \infty$. This provides a new proof, via gluing methods, for elements in the ends of the Higgs bundle moduli space and identifies a dense open subset of the boundary of the compactification of this moduli space.

A spinorial energy functional: critical points and gradient flow

On the universal bundle of unit spinors we study a natural energy functional whose critical points, if dim M \geq 3, are precisely the pairs (g, {\phi}) consisting of a Ricci-flat Riemannian metric g together with a parallel g-spinor {\phi}. We investigate the basic properties of this functional and study its negative gradient flow, the so-called spinor flow. In particular, we prove short-time existence and uniqueness for this flow.

Energy functionals and soliton equations for G_2-forms

We extend short-time existence and stability of the Dirichlet energy flow as proven in a previous paper by the authors to a broader class of energy functionals. Furthermore, we derive some monotonely decreasing quantities for the Dirichlet energy flow and investigate an equation of soliton type. In particular, we show that nearly parallel G_2-structures satisfy this soliton equation and study their infinitesimal soliton deformations.

A heat flow for special metrics

On the space of positive 3-forms on a seven-manifold, we study a natural functional whose critical points induce metrics with holonomy contained in $G_2$. We prove short-time existence and uniqueness for its negative gradient flow. Furthermore, we show that the flow exists for all times and converges modulo diffeomorphisms to some critical point for any initial condition sufficiently $C^\infty$-close to a critical point.

The deformation theory of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles less than $2\pi$

We develop the deformation theory of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles less than $2\pi$, i.e. contained in the interval $(0,2\pi)$. In the present paper we focus on deformations keeping the topological type of the cone-manifold fixed. We prove local rigidity for such structures. This gives a positive answer to a question of A. Casson.

Deforming Euclidean cone 3-manifolds

Given a closed orientable Euclidean cone 3-manifold C with cone angles less than or equal to pi, and which is not almost product, we describe the space of constant curvature cone structures on C with cone angles less than pi. We establish a regeneration result for such Euclidean cone manifolds into spherical or hyperbolic ones and we also deduce global rigidity for Euclidean cone structures.

Local rigidity of 3-dimensional cone-manifolds

We investigate the local deformation space of 3-dimensional cone-manifold structures of constant curvature $\kappa \in \{-1,0,1\}$ and cone-angles $\leq \pi$. Under this assumption on the cone-angles the singular locus will be a trivalent graph. In the hyperbolic and the spherical case our main result is a vanishing theorem for the first $L^2$-cohomology group of the smooth part of the cone-manifold with coefficients in the flat bundle of infinitesimal isometries. We conclude local rigidity from this. In the Euclidean case we prove that the first $L^2$-cohomology group of the smooth part with coefficients in the flat tangent bundle is represented by parallel forms.
