MicroGlam: Microscopic Skin Image Dataset with Cosmetics

In this paper, we present a cosmetic-specific skin image dataset. It consists of skin images from $45$ patches ($5$ skin patches each from $9$ participants) of size $8mm^*8mm$ under three cosmetic products (i.e., foundation, blusher, and highlighter). We designed a novel capturing device inspired by Light Stage. Using the device, we captured over $600$ images of each skin patch under diverse lighting conditions in $30$ seconds. We repeated the process for the same skin patch under three cosmetic products. Finally, we demonstrate the viability of the dataset with an image-to-image translation-based pipeline for cosmetic rendering and compared our data-driven approach to an existing cosmetic rendering method.

Recognizing Conditional Causal Relationships about Emotions and Their Corresponding Conditions

The study of causal relationships between emotions and causes in texts has recently received much attention. Most works focus on extracting causally related clauses from documents. However, none of these works has considered that the causal relationships among the extracted emotion and cause clauses can only be valid under some specific context clauses. To highlight the context in such special causal relationships, we propose a new task to determine whether or not an input pair of emotion and cause has a valid causal relationship under different contexts and extract the specific context clauses that participate in the causal relationship. Since the task is new for which no existing dataset is available, we conduct manual annotation on a benchmark dataset to obtain the labels for our tasks and the annotations of each context clause's type that can also be used in some other applications. We adopt negative sampling to construct the final dataset to balance the number of documents with and without causal relationships. Based on the constructed dataset, we propose an end-to-end multi-task framework, where we design two novel and general modules to handle the two goals of our task. Specifically, we propose a context masking module to extract the context clauses participating in the causal relationships. We propose a prediction aggregation module to fine-tune the prediction results according to whether the input emotion and causes depend on specific context clauses. Results of extensive comparative experiments and ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness and generality of our proposed framework.

Exploring Causal Learning through Graph Neural Networks: An In-depth Review

In machine learning, exploring data correlations to predict outcomes is a fundamental task. Recognizing causal relationships embedded within data is pivotal for a comprehensive understanding of system dynamics, the significance of which is paramount in data-driven decision-making processes. Beyond traditional methods, there has been a surge in the use of graph neural networks (GNNs) for causal learning, given their capabilities as universal data approximators. Thus, a thorough review of the advancements in causal learning using GNNs is both relevant and timely. To structure this review, we introduce a novel taxonomy that encompasses various state-of-the-art GNN methods employed in studying causality. GNNs are further categorized based on their applications in the causality domain. We further provide an exhaustive compilation of datasets integral to causal learning with GNNs to serve as a resource for practical study. This review also touches upon the application of causal learning across diverse sectors. We conclude the review with insights into potential challenges and promising avenues for future exploration in this rapidly evolving field of machine learning.

Label Supervised LLaMA Finetuning

The recent success of Large Language Models (LLMs) has gained significant attention in both academia and industry. Substantial efforts have been made to enhance the zero- and few-shot generalization capabilities of open-source LLMs through finetuning. Currently, the prevailing approach is instruction-tuning, which trains LLMs to complete real-world tasks by generating responses guided by natural language instructions. It is worth noticing that such an approach may underperform in sequence and token classification tasks. Unlike text generation tasks, classification tasks have a limited label space, where precise label prediction is more appreciated than generating diverse and human-like responses. Prior research has unveiled that instruction-tuned LLMs cannot outperform BERT, prompting us to explore the potential of leveraging latent representations from LLMs for supervised label prediction. In this paper, we introduce a label-supervised adaptation for LLMs, which aims to finetuning the model with discriminant labels. We evaluate this approach with Label Supervised LLaMA (LS-LLaMA), based on LLaMA-2-7B, a relatively small-scale LLM, and can be finetuned on a single GeForce RTX4090 GPU. We extract latent representations from the final LLaMA layer and project them into the label space to compute the cross-entropy loss. The model is finetuned by Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) to minimize this loss. Remarkably, without intricate prompt engineering or external knowledge, LS-LLaMA substantially outperforms LLMs ten times its size in scale and demonstrates consistent improvements compared to robust baselines like BERT-Large and RoBERTa-Large in text classification. Moreover, by removing the causal mask from decoders, LS-unLLaMA achieves the state-of-the-art performance in named entity recognition (NER). Our work will shed light on a novel approach to adapting LLMs for various downstream tasks.

PDRL: Multi-Agent based Reinforcement Learning for Predictive Monitoring

Reinforcement learning has been increasingly applied in monitoring applications because of its ability to learn from previous experiences and can make adaptive decisions. However, existing machine learning-based health monitoring applications are mostly supervised learning algorithms, trained on labels and they cannot make adaptive decisions in an uncertain complex environment. This study proposes a novel and generic system, predictive deep reinforcement learning (PDRL) with multiple RL agents in a time series forecasting environment. The proposed generic framework accommodates virtual Deep Q Network (DQN) agents to monitor predicted future states of a complex environment with a well-defined reward policy so that the agent learns existing knowledge while maximizing their rewards. In the evaluation process of the proposed framework, three DRL agents were deployed to monitor a subject's future heart rate, respiration, and temperature predicted using a BiLSTM model. With each iteration, the three agents were able to learn the associated patterns and their cumulative rewards gradually increased. It outperformed the baseline models for all three monitoring agents. The proposed PDRL framework is able to achieve state-of-the-art performance in the time series forecasting process. The proposed DRL agents and deep learning model in the PDRL framework are customized to implement the transfer learning in other forecasting applications like traffic and weather and monitor their states. The PDRL framework is able to learn the future states of the traffic and weather forecasting and the cumulative rewards are gradually increasing over each episode.

A Semi-automatic Oriental Ink Painting Framework for Robotic Drawing from 3D Models

Creating visually pleasing stylized ink paintings from 3D models is a challenge in robotic manipulation. We propose a semi-automatic framework that can extract expressive strokes from 3D models and draw them in oriental ink painting styles by using a robotic arm. The framework consists of a simulation stage and a robotic drawing stage. In the simulation stage, geometrical contours were automatically extracted from a certain viewpoint and a neural network was employed to create simplified contours. Then, expressive digital strokes were generated after interactive editing according to user's aesthetic understanding. In the robotic drawing stage, an optimization method was presented for drawing smooth and physically consistent strokes to the digital strokes, and two oriental ink painting styles termed as Noutan (shade) and Kasure (scratchiness) were applied to the strokes by robotic control of a brush's translation, dipping and scraping. Unlike existing methods that concentrate on generating paintings from 2D images, our framework has the advantage of rendering stylized ink paintings from 3D models by using a consumer-grade robotic arm. We evaluate the proposed framework by taking 3 standard models and a user-defined model as examples. The results show that our framework is able to draw visually pleasing oriental ink paintings with expressive strokes.

iSmallNet: Densely Nested Network with Label Decoupling for Infrared Small Target Detection

Small targets are often submerged in cluttered backgrounds of infrared images. Conventional detectors tend to generate false alarms, while CNN-based detectors lose small targets in deep layers. To this end, we propose iSmallNet, a multi-stream densely nested network with label decoupling for infrared small object detection. On the one hand, to fully exploit the shape information of small targets, we decouple the original labeled ground-truth (GT) map into an interior map and a boundary one. The GT map, in collaboration with the two additional maps, tackles the unbalanced distribution of small object boundaries. On the other hand, two key modules are delicately designed and incorporated into the proposed network to boost the overall performance. First, to maintain small targets in deep layers, we develop a multi-scale nested interaction module to explore a wide range of context information. Second, we develop an interior-boundary fusion module to integrate multi-granularity information. Experiments on NUAA-SIRST and NUDT-SIRST clearly show the superiority of iSmallNet over 11 state-of-the-art detectors.

SGDraw: Scene Graph Drawing Interface Using Object-Oriented Representation

Scene understanding is an essential and challenging task in computer vision. To provide the visually fundamental graphical structure of an image, the scene graph has received increased attention due to its powerful semantic representation. However, it is difficult to draw a proper scene graph for image retrieval, image generation, and multi-modal applications. The conventional scene graph annotation interface is not easy to use in image annotations, and the automatic scene graph generation approaches using deep neural networks are prone to generate redundant content while disregarding details. In this work, we propose SGDraw, a scene graph drawing interface using object-oriented scene graph representation to help users draw and edit scene graphs interactively. For the proposed object-oriented representation, we consider the objects, attributes, and relationships of objects as a structural unit. SGDraw provides a web-based scene graph annotation and generation tool for scene understanding applications. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed interface, we conducted a comparison study with the conventional tool and the user experience study. The results show that SGDraw can help generate scene graphs with richer details and describe the images more accurately than traditional bounding box annotations. We believe the proposed SGDraw can be useful in various vision tasks, such as image retrieval and generation.

AniFaceDrawing: Anime Portrait Exploration during Your Sketching

In this paper, we focus on how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to assist users in the creation of anime portraits, that is, converting rough sketches into anime portraits during their sketching process. The input is a sequence of incomplete freehand sketches that are gradually refined stroke by stroke, while the output is a sequence of high-quality anime portraits that correspond to the input sketches as guidance. Although recent GANs can generate high quality images, it is a challenging problem to maintain the high quality of generated images from sketches with a low degree of completion due to ill-posed problems in conditional image generation. Even with the latest sketch-to-image (S2I) technology, it is still difficult to create high-quality images from incomplete rough sketches for anime portraits since anime style tend to be more abstract than in realistic style. To address this issue, we adopt a latent space exploration of StyleGAN with a two-stage training strategy. We consider the input strokes of a freehand sketch to correspond to edge information-related attributes in the latent structural code of StyleGAN, and term the matching between strokes and these attributes stroke-level disentanglement. In the first stage, we trained an image encoder with the pre-trained StyleGAN model as a teacher encoder. In the second stage, we simulated the drawing process of the generated images without any additional data (labels) and trained the sketch encoder for incomplete progressive sketches to generate high-quality portrait images with feature alignment to the disentangled representations in the teacher encoder. We verified the proposed progressive S2I system with both qualitative and quantitative evaluations and achieved high-quality anime portraits from incomplete progressive sketches. Our user study proved its effectiveness in art creation assistance for the anime style.

Recurrent Attention Networks for Long-text Modeling

Self-attention-based models have achieved remarkable progress in short-text mining. However, the quadratic computational complexities restrict their application in long text processing. Prior works have adopted the chunking strategy to divide long documents into chunks and stack a self-attention backbone with the recurrent structure to extract semantic representation. Such an approach disables parallelization of the attention mechanism, significantly increasing the training cost and raising hardware requirements. Revisiting the self-attention mechanism and the recurrent structure, this paper proposes a novel long-document encoding model, Recurrent Attention Network (RAN), to enable the recurrent operation of self-attention. Combining the advantages from both sides, the well-designed RAN is capable of extracting global semantics in both token-level and document-level representations, making it inherently compatible with both sequential and classification tasks, respectively. Furthermore, RAN is computationally scalable as it supports parallelization on long document processing. Extensive experiments demonstrate the long-text encoding ability of the proposed RAN model on both classification and sequential tasks, showing its potential for a wide range of applications.

DualSlide: Global-to-Local Sketching Interface for Slide Content and Layout Design

Online learning and academic conferences have become pervasive and essential for education and professional development, especially since the onset of pandemics. Academic presentations usually require well-designed slides that are easily understood. Sketches that visually represent design intentions and are readily accessible to the average users. To assist non-expert users in creating visually appealing academic slides, we propose DualSlide, a global and local two-stage sketching interface system that provides image retrieval and user guidance. At the global stage, DualSlide provides a heat map canvas to display the distribution of all slide layouts in a dataset, allowing users to explore the reference slides efficiently. At the local stage of the system, detailed references and guidance for designing slide content, such as diagrams and fonts, can be provided. We further propose a sketch-matching algorithm to compare the user's input sketch and similar diagrams. All user guidance can be adapted in real-time editing, and users can design slides with a high degree of freedom. We conducted a user study to verify the effectiveness and usability of the proposed DualSlide system confirming that DualSlide provides high retrieval accuracy and satisfactory design results with a good user experience. Search By Image: Deeply Exploring Beneficial Features for Beauty Product Retrieval

Searching by image is popular yet still challenging due to the extensive interference arose from i) data variations (e.g., background, pose, visual angle, brightness) of real-world captured images and ii) similar images in the query dataset. This paper studies a practically meaningful problem of beauty product retrieval (BPR) by neural networks. We broadly extract different types of image features, and raise an intriguing question that whether these features are beneficial to i) suppress data variations of real-world captured images, and ii) distinguish one image from others which look very similar but are intrinsically different beauty products in the dataset, therefore leading to an enhanced capability of BPR. To answer it, we present a novel variable-attention neural network to understand the combination of multiple features (termed VM-Net) of beauty product images. Considering that there are few publicly released training datasets for BPR, we establish a new dataset with more than one million images classified into more than 20K categories to improve both the generalization and anti-interference abilities of VM-Net and other methods. We verify the performance of VM-Net and its competitors on the benchmark dataset Perfect-500K, where VM-Net shows clear improvements over the competitors in terms of MAP@7. The source code and dataset will be released upon publication.

Sketch2Cloth: Sketch-based 3D Garment Generation with Unsigned Distance Fields

3D model reconstruction from a single image has achieved great progress with the recent deep generative models. However, the conventional reconstruction approaches with template mesh deformation and implicit fields have difficulty in reconstructing non-watertight 3D mesh models, such as garments. In contrast to image-based modeling, the sketch-based approach can help users generate 3D models to meet the design intentions from hand-drawn sketches. In this study, we propose Sketch2Cloth, a sketch-based 3D garment generation system using the unsigned distance fields from the user's sketch input. Sketch2Cloth first estimates the unsigned distance function of the target 3D model from the sketch input, and extracts the mesh from the estimated field with Marching Cubes. We also provide the model editing function to modify the generated mesh. We verified the proposed Sketch2Cloth with quantitative evaluations on garment generation and editing with a state-of-the-art approach.

DiffFaceSketch: High-Fidelity Face Image Synthesis with Sketch-Guided Latent Diffusion Model

Synthesizing face images from monochrome sketches is one of the most fundamental tasks in the field of image-to-image translation. However, it is still challenging to (1)~make models learn the high-dimensional face features such as geometry and color, and (2)~take into account the characteristics of input sketches. Existing methods often use sketches as indirect inputs (or as auxiliary inputs) to guide the models, resulting in the loss of sketch features or the alteration of geometry information. In this paper, we introduce a Sketch-Guided Latent Diffusion Model (SGLDM), an LDM-based network architect trained on the paired sketch-face dataset. We apply a Multi-Auto-Encoder (AE) to encode the different input sketches from different regions of a face from pixel space to a feature map in latent space, which enables us to reduce the dimension of the sketch input while preserving the geometry-related information of local face details. We build a sketch-face paired dataset based on the existing method that extracts the edge map from an image. We then introduce a Stochastic Region Abstraction (SRA), an approach to augment our dataset to improve the robustness of SGLDM to handle sketch input with arbitrary abstraction. The evaluation study shows that SGLDM can synthesize high-quality face images with different expressions, facial accessories, and hairstyles from various sketches with different abstraction levels.

Sentiment analysis and opinion mining on educational data: A survey

Sentiment analysis AKA opinion mining is one of the most widely used NLP applications to identify human intentions from their reviews. In the education sector, opinion mining is used to listen to student opinions and enhance their learning-teaching practices pedagogically. With advancements in sentiment annotation techniques and AI methodologies, student comments can be labelled with their sentiment orientation without much human intervention. In this review article, (1) we consider the role of emotional analysis in education from four levels: document level, sentence level, entity level, and aspect level, (2) sentiment annotation techniques including lexicon-based and corpus-based approaches for unsupervised annotations are explored, (3) the role of AI in sentiment analysis with methodologies like machine learning, deep learning, and transformers are discussed, (4) the impact of sentiment analysis on educational procedures to enhance pedagogy, decision-making, and evaluation are presented. Educational institutions have been widely invested to build sentiment analysis tools and process their student feedback to draw their opinions and insights. Applications built on sentiment analysis of student feedback are reviewed in this study. Challenges in sentiment analysis like multi-polarity, polysemous, negation words, and opinion spam detection are explored and their trends in the research space are discussed. The future directions of sentiment analysis in education are discussed.

Efficient Human-in-the-loop System for Guiding DNNs Attention

Attention guidance is an approach to addressing dataset bias in deep learning, where the model relies on incorrect features to make decisions. Focusing on image classification tasks, we propose an efficient human-in-the-loop system to interactively direct the attention of classifiers to the regions specified by users, thereby reducing the influence of co-occurrence bias and improving the transferability and interpretability of a DNN. Previous approaches for attention guidance require the preparation of pixel-level annotations and are not designed as interactive systems. We present a new interactive method to allow users to annotate images with simple clicks, and study a novel active learning strategy to significantly reduce the number of annotations. We conducted both a numerical evaluation and a user study to evaluate the proposed system on multiple datasets. Compared to the existing non-active-learning approach which usually relies on huge amounts of polygon-based segmentation masks to fine-tune or train the DNNs, our system can save lots of labor and money and obtain a fine-tuned network that works better even when the dataset is biased. The experiment results indicate that the proposed system is efficient, reasonable, and reliable.

AI enabled RPM for Mental Health Facility

Mental healthcare is one of the prominent parts of the healthcare industry with alarming concerns related to patients depression, stress leading to self-harm and threat to fellow patients and medical staff. To provide a therapeutic environment for both patients and staff, aggressive or agitated patients need to be monitored remotely and track their vital signs and physical activities continuously. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) using non-invasive technology could enable contactless monitoring of acutely ill patients in a mental health facility. Enabling the RPM system with AI unlocks a predictive environment in which future vital signs of the patients can be forecasted. This paper discusses an AI-enabled RPM system framework with a non-invasive digital technology RFID using its in-built NCS mechanism to retrieve vital signs and physical actions of patients. Based on the retrieved time series data, future vital signs of patients for the upcoming 3 hours and classify their physical actions into 10 labelled physical activities. This framework assists to avoid any unforeseen clinical disasters and take precautionary measures with medical intervention at right time. A case study of a middle-aged PTSD patient treated with the AI-enabled RPM system is demonstrated in this study.
