On the correspondence between energy conservation and energy-momentum tensor conservation in cosmology

The correspondence between the thermodynamic energy equation satisfied by a closed co-moving volume and the conservation equation satisfied by the energy-momentum tensor of the matter inside the co-moving volume is extended to a more general system with an arbitrary cosmological horizon and a heat source. The energy of the system consisting of a cosmological horizon and its internal matter could be conserved by defining a surface energy on the horizons. Therefore, energy conservation and energy-momentum tensor conservation can always be consistent for such a system. On the other hand, from the perspective of classical thermodynamics, one can define an effective pressure at the cosmological horizon to guarantee that the thermodynamic energy equation inside the horizon is consistent with the energy-momentum tensor conservation equation of the matter inside the horizon. These systems can satisfy the generalized second law of thermodynamics under appropriate conditions. The definitions of the surface energy and the effective pressure are extended to the gravity theory with non-minimal coupling between geometry and matter, in which geometry could be regarded as a heat source.

A Unified Pruning Framework for Vision Transformers

Recently, vision transformer (ViT) and its variants have achieved promising performances in various computer vision tasks. Yet the high computational costs and training data requirements of ViTs limit their application in resource-constrained settings. Model compression is an effective method to speed up deep learning models, but the research of compressing ViTs has been less explored. Many previous works concentrate on reducing the number of tokens. However, this line of attack breaks down the spatial structure of ViTs and is hard to be generalized into downstream tasks. In this paper, we design a unified framework for structural pruning of both ViTs and its variants, namely UP-ViTs. Our method focuses on pruning all ViTs components while maintaining the consistency of the model structure. Abundant experimental results show that our method can achieve high accuracy on compressed ViTs and variants, e.g., UP-DeiT-T achieves 75.79% accuracy on ImageNet, which outperforms the vanilla DeiT-T by 3.59% with the same computational cost. UP-PVTv2-B0 improves the accuracy of PVTv2-B0 by 4.83% for ImageNet classification. Meanwhile, UP-ViTs maintains the consistency of the token representation and gains consistent improvements on object detection tasks.

Periodic event-triggered networked control systems subject to large transmission delays

This paper studies periodic event-triggered networked control for nonlinear systems, where the plants and controllers are connected by multiple independent communication channels. Several network-induced imperfections are considered simultaneously, including time-varying inter-sampling times, sensor node scheduling, and especially, large time-varying transmission delays, where the transmitted signal may arrive at the destination node after the next transmission occurs. A new hybrid system approach is provided to model the closed-loop system that contains all communication related behavior. Then, by constructing new storage functions on the system state and updating errors, the relationship between the maximum allowable sampling period (MASP) and maximum allowable delay number in sampling (MADNS) is analyzed, where the latter denotes how many inter-sampling periods can be included in one transmission delay. Moreover, to efficiently reduce unnecessary transmissions, a new dynamic event-triggered control scheme is proposed, where the event-triggering conditions are detected only at aperiodic and asynchronous sampling instants. From emulation-based method, where the controllers are initially designed by ignoring all the network-induced imperfections, sufficient conditions on the dynamic event-triggered control are given to ensure closed-loop input-to-state stability with respect to external disturbances. Moreover, according to different capacities of the communication channels, the corresponding implementation strategies of the designed dynamic event-triggered control schemes are discussed. Finally, two nonlinear examples are simulated to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of the theoretical results.

CoFiNet: Reliable Coarse-to-fine Correspondences for Robust Point Cloud Registration

We study the problem of extracting correspondences between a pair of point clouds for registration. For correspondence retrieval, existing works benefit from matching sparse keypoints detected from dense points but usually struggle to guarantee their repeatability. To address this issue, we present CoFiNet - Coarse-to-Fine Network which extracts hierarchical correspondences from coarse to fine without keypoint detection. On a coarse scale and guided by a weighting scheme, our model firstly learns to match down-sampled nodes whose vicinity points share more overlap, which significantly shrinks the search space of a consecutive stage. On a finer scale, node proposals are consecutively expanded to patches that consist of groups of points together with associated descriptors. Point correspondences are then refined from the overlap areas of corresponding patches, by a density-adaptive matching module capable to deal with varying point density. Extensive evaluation of CoFiNet on both indoor and outdoor standard benchmarks shows our superiority over existing methods. Especially on 3DLoMatch where point clouds share less overlap, CoFiNet significantly outperforms state-of-the-art approaches by at least 5% on Registration Recall, with at most two-third of their parameters.

Semi-$G$-normal: a Hybrid between Normal and $G$-normal (Full Version)

The $G$-expectation framework is a generalization of the classical probabilistic system motivated by Knightian uncertainty, where the $G$-normal plays a central role. However, from a statistical perspective, $G$-normal distributions look quite different from the classical normal ones. For instance, its uncertainty is characterized by a set of distributions which covers not only classical normal with different variances, but additional distributions typically having non-zero skewness. The $G$-moments of $G$-normals are defined by a class of fully nonlinear PDEs called $G$-heat equations. To understand $G$-normal in a probabilistic and stochastic way that is more friendly to statisticians and practitioners, we introduce a substructure called semi-$G$-normal, which behaves like a hybrid between normal and $G$-normal: it has variance uncertainty but zero-skewness. We will show that the non-zero skewness arises when we impose the $G$-version sequential independence on the semi-$G$-normal. More importantly, we provide a series of representations of random vectors with semi-$G$-normal marginals under various types of independence. Each of these representations under a typical order of independence is closely related to a class of state-space volatility models with a common graphical structure. In short, semi-$G$-normal gives a (conceptual) transition from classical normal to $G$-normal, allowing us a better understanding of the distributional uncertainty of $G$-normal and the sequential independence.

The equivalence between Feynman transform and Verdier duality

The equivalence between dg duality and Verdier duality has been established for cyclic operads earlier. We propose a generalization of this correspondence from cyclic operads and dg duality to twisted modular operads and Feynman transform. Specifically, for each twisted modular operad $\mathcal{P}$ (taking values in dg-vector spaces over a field $k$ of characteristic 0), there is a certain sheaf $\mathcal{F}$ associated with it on the moduli space of stable metric graphs such that the Verdier dual sheaf $D\mathcal{F}$ is associated with the Feynman transform $F\mathcal{P}$ of $\mathcal{P}$. In the course of the proof, we also prove a relation between cyclic operads and modular operads originally proposed in the pioneering work of Getzler and Kapranov; however, to the best knowledge of the author, no proof has been given in any literature. This geometric interpretation in operad theory is of fundamental importance. We believe this result will illuminate many aspects of the theory of modular operads and find many applications in the future. We illustrate an application of this result, giving another proof on the homotopy properties of Feynman transform, which is quite intuitive and simpler than the original proof.

Crude oil price forecasting incorporating news text

Sparse and short news headlines can be arbitrary, noisy, and ambiguous, making it difficult for classic topic model LDA (latent Dirichlet allocation) designed for accommodating long text to discover knowledge from them. Nonetheless, some of the existing research about text-based crude oil forecasting employs LDA to explore topics from news headlines, resulting in a mismatch between the short text and the topic model and further affecting the forecasting performance. Exploiting advanced and appropriate methods to construct high-quality features from news headlines becomes crucial in crude oil forecasting. To tackle this issue, this paper introduces two novel indicators of topic and sentiment for the short and sparse text data. Empirical experiments show that AdaBoost.RT with our proposed text indicators, with a more comprehensive view and characterization of the short and sparse text data, outperforms the other benchmarks. Another significant merit is that our method also yields good forecasting performance when applied to other futures commodities.

Constraints on running vacuum models with the baryon-to-photon ratio

We study the influence of running vacuum on the baryon-to-photon ratio in running vacuum models (RVMs). When there exists a non-minimal coupling between photons and other matter in the expanding universe, the energy-momentum tensor of photons is no longer conserved, but the energy of photons could remain conserved. We discuss the conditions for the energy conservation of photons in RVMs. The photon number density and baryon number density, from the epoch of photon decoupling to the present day, are obtained in the context of RVMs by assuming that photons and baryons can be coupled to running vacuum, respectively. Both cases lead to a time-evolving baryon-to-photon ratio. However the evolution of the baryon-to-photon ratio is strictly constrained by observations. It is found that if the dynamic term of running vacuum is indeed coupled to photons or baryons, the coefficient of the dynamic term must be extremely small, which is unnatural. Therefore, our study basically rules out the possibility that running vacuum is coupled to photons or baryons in RVMs.

Network-wide traffic signal control optimization using a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning

Inefficient traffic control may cause numerous problems such as traffic congestion and energy waste. This paper proposes a novel multi-agent reinforcement learning method, named KS-DDPG (Knowledge Sharing Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient) to achieve optimal control by enhancing the cooperation between traffic signals. By introducing the knowledge-sharing enabled communication protocol, each agent can access to the collective representation of the traffic environment collected by all agents. The proposed method is evaluated through two experiments respectively using synthetic and real-world datasets. The comparison with state-of-the-art reinforcement learning-based and conventional transportation methods demonstrate the proposed KS-DDPG has significant efficiency in controlling large-scale transportation networks and coping with fluctuations in traffic flow. In addition, the introduced communication mechanism has also been proven to speed up the convergence of the model without significantly increasing the computational burden.

Spectrally multiplexed heralded single photon source at telecom-band

Heralded single photon source (HSPS) is an important way in generating genuine single photon, having advantages of experimental simplicity and versatility. However, HSPS intrinsically suffers from the trade-off between the heralded single photon rate and the single photon purity. To overcome this, one can apply multiplexing technology in different degrees of freedom to enhance the performance of HSPS. Here, by employing spectral multiplexing and active feed-forward spectral manipulating, we demonstrate a HSPS at 1.5 μm telecom-band. Our experimental results show that the spectral multiplexing effectively erases the frequency correlation of pair source and significantly improves the heralded single photon rate while keeping the g{^(^2^)}(0) as low as 0.0006{\pm}0.0001. The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between the heralded single photons and photons from an independent weak coherent source indicates a high indistinguishability. Our results pave a way for scalable HSPS by spectral multiplexing towards deterministic single photon emission.

High-performance quantum entanglement generation via cascaded second-order nonlinear processes

In this paper, we demonstrate the generation of high-performance entangled photon-pairs in different degrees of freedom from a single piece of fiber pigtailed periodically poled LiNbO$_3$ (PPLN) waveguide. We utilize cascaded second-order nonlinear optical processes, i.e. second-harmonic generation (SHG) and spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), to generate photon-pairs. Previously, the performance of the photon pairs is contaminated by Raman noise photons from the fiber pigtails. Here by integrating the PPLN waveguide with noise rejecting filters, we obtain a coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) higher than 52,600 with photon-pair generation and detection rate of 52.3 kHz and 3.5 kHz, respectively. Energy-time, frequency-bin and time-bin entanglement is prepared by coherently superposing correlated two-photon states in these degrees of freedom, respectively. The energy-time entangled two-photon states achieve the maximum value of CHSH-Bell inequality of S=2.708$\pm$0.024 with a two-photon interference visibility of 95.74$\pm$0.86%. The frequency-bin entangled two-photon states achieve fidelity of 97.56$\pm$1.79% with a spatial quantum beating visibility of 96.85$\pm$2.46%. The time-bin entangled two-photon states achieve the maximum value of CHSH-Bell inequality of S=2.595$\pm$0.037 and quantum tomographic fidelity of 89.07$\pm$4.35%. Our results provide a potential candidate for quantum light source in quantum photonics.

Mixup Without Hesitation

Mixup linearly interpolates pairs of examples to form new samples, which is easy to implement and has been shown to be effective in image classification tasks. However, there are two drawbacks in mixup: one is that more training epochs are needed to obtain a well-trained model; the other is that mixup requires tuning a hyper-parameter to gain appropriate capacity but that is a difficult task. In this paper, we find that mixup constantly explores the representation space, and inspired by the exploration-exploitation dilemma in reinforcement learning, we propose mixup Without hesitation (mWh), a concise, effective, and easy-to-use training algorithm. We show that mWh strikes a good balance between exploration and exploitation by gradually replacing mixup with basic data augmentation. It can achieve a strong baseline with less training time than original mixup and without searching for optimal hyper-parameter, i.e., mWh acts as mixup without hesitation. mWh can also transfer to CutMix, and gain consistent improvement on other machine learning and computer vision tasks such as object detection. Robust Attacks on Deep Learning Face Recognition in the Physical World

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been increasingly used in face recognition (FR) systems. Recent studies, however, show that DNNs are vulnerable to adversarial examples, which can potentially mislead the FR systems using DNNs in the physical world. Existing attacks on these systems either generate perturbations working merely in the digital world, or rely on customized equipments to generate perturbations and are not robust in varying physical environments. In this paper, we propose FaceAdv, a physical-world attack that crafts adversarial stickers to deceive FR systems. It mainly consists of a sticker generator and a transformer, where the former can craft several stickers with different shapes and the latter transformer aims to digitally attach stickers to human faces and provide feedbacks to the generator to improve the effectiveness of stickers. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of FaceAdv on attacking 3 typical FR systems (i.e., ArcFace, CosFace and FaceNet). The results show that compared with a state-of-the-art attack, FaceAdv can significantly improve success rate of both dodging and impersonating attacks. We also conduct comprehensive evaluations to demonstrate the robustness of FaceAdv.

S3-Net: A Fast and Lightweight Video Scene Understanding Network by Single-shot Segmentation

Real-time understanding in video is crucial in various AI applications such as autonomous driving. This work presents a fast single-shot segmentation strategy for video scene understanding. The proposed net, called S3-Net, quickly locates and segments target sub-scenes, meanwhile extracts structured time-series semantic features as inputs to an LSTM-based spatio-temporal model. Utilizing tensorization and quantization techniques, S3-Net is intended to be lightweight for edge computing. Experiments using CityScapes, UCF11, HMDB51 and MOMENTS datasets demonstrate that the proposed S3-Net achieves an accuracy improvement of 8.1% versus the 3D-CNN based approach on UCF11, a storage reduction of 6.9x and an inference speed of 22.8 FPS on CityScapes with a GTX1080Ti GPU.

Dynamic Phase Diagram of an Orthogonal Spin Torque device: Topological Category

The magnetization evolution of the free layer in an orthogonal spin-torque device is studied based on a macrospin model. The trajectory of magnetization vector under various conditions has shown rich nonlinear properties. The phase diagram is obtained in the parameter spaces of current density and the polarization distribution (the ratio of in-plane and out-of-plane polarizers). These dynamic phases can be classified according to their nonlinear behaviors which are topologically different, namely limit point and/or limit cycle. The topological classification is meaningful to design the ultra-fast spin-torque devices under different dynamic conditions towards various applications such as memory and oscillators.

Vibration-induced actuation of droplets on microstructured surfaces

When a liquid droplet impacts a vibrated micro-structured surface with asymmetric topology, the liquids perform a horizontal motion during its bouncing. The moving effect is observed when the liquid is in contact with a low surface energy surface (e.g. hydrophobic) and over a wide amplitude and frequency range. We propose that the motion direction of liquid droplets is driven by a force exerted by the unbalanced vapor flow between the contact of solid and the liquid due to the asymmetric geometry. We observe the levitation and movement dynamics of the droplet impacting on a vibrated micro-structured surface to reveal the processes responsible for the transitional regime between the moving, unmoved, and broken droplet as the vibration amplitude and frequency increases. Based on the insight provided by the experiment and on the analysis of the kinetic energy of the droplet, we develop a quantitative model for the dynamic movement and its dependence on the vibration characteristics.

Dynamical mixing between $2^3S_1$ and $1^3D_1$ charmed mesons

In charmed $D$ and $D_s$ mesons sector, the matrix of a Hamiltonian in a quark potential model is computed in the $2^3S_1$ and $1^3D_1$ subspace. The masses of four mixed states of $2^3S_1$ and $1^3D_1$ denoted with $D^*_1(2635)$, $D^*_1(2739)$, $D^*_{s1}(2715)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2805)$ are obtained. It is an off-diagonal part of the spin-orbit tensor interaction that causes the mixing between the $2^3S_1$ and $1^3D_1$ states. The mixing angles between the $2^3S_1$ and $1^3D_1$ states are tiny. Under the mixing, a $^3P_0$ model is employed to compute the hadronic decay widths of all OZI-allowed decay channels of the four mixed states. The two light mixed states $D^*_1(2635)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2715)$ are close in mass to $D^*_J(2600)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2700)$, while the two heavy mixed states $D^*_1(2739)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2805)$ are lighter in mass than $D(2750)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2860)$. The mixing angles obtained from dynamical interaction are inconsistent with the mixing angles obtained from hadronic decay. Based on mass spectra and hadronic decay analyses, $D^*_J(2600)$, $D(2750)$, $D^*_{s1}(2700)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2860)$ are impossibly the mixed states of $2^3S_1$ and $1^3D_1$ at the small mixing angles. The inconsistence implies that $D^*_1(2760)$ and $D^*_{s1}(2860)$ have not been properly resolved from present experimental data, or there exist large unknown off-diagonal interactions that result in large mixing angles.

Control of microswimmers by spiral nematic vortices: transition from individual to collective motion and contraction, expansion, and stable circulation of bacterial swirls

Active systems comprised of self-propelled units show fascinating transitions from Brownian-like dynamics to collective coherent motion. Swirling of swimming bacteria is a spectacular example. This study demonstrates that a nematic liquid crystal environment patterned as a spiral vortex controls individual-to-collective transition in bacterial swirls and defines whether they expand or shrink. In dilute dispersions, the bacteria swim along open spiral trajectories, following the pre-imposed molecular orientation. The trajectories are nonpolar. As their concentration exceeds some threshold, the bacteria condense into unipolar circular swirls resembling stable limit cycles. This collective circular motion is controlled by the spiral angle that defines the splay-to-bend ratio of the background director. Vortices with dominating splay shrink the swirls towards the center, while vortices with dominating bend expand them to the periphery. 45o spiraling vortices with splay-bend parity produce the most stable swirls. All the dynamic scenarios are explained by hydrodynamic interactions of bacteria mediated by the patterned passive nematic environment and by the coupling between the concentration and orientation. The acquired knowledge of how to control individual and collective motion of microswimmers by a nematic environment can help in the development of microscopic mechanical systems.
