Infinite Dimensional Topological-Holomorphic Symmetry in Three-Dimensions

We introduce a three-dimensional quantum field theory with an infinite-dimensional symmetry, realized explicitly through a centrally extended affine graded Lie algebra. This symmetry is a direct three-dimensional generalization of the chiral symmetry in the Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Upon performing radial quantization, we construct the Fock space of the theory and, via a three-dimensional analogue of the state-operator correspondence, we demonstrate that the algebra of local operators is endowed with the structure of a raviolo vertex algebra. Accordingly, this setup provides a framework for extending the methods of two-dimensional conformal field theory to three dimensions, and we expect it to lay the groundwork for exact methods in three-dimensional quantum field theory.

Combinatorial quantization of 4d 2-Chern-Simons theory II: Quantum invariants of higher ribbons in $D^4$

This is a continuation of the first paper (arXiv:2501.06486) of this series, where the framework for the combinatorial quantization of the 4d 2-Chern-Simons theory with an underlying compact structure Lie 2-group $\mathbb{G}$ was laid out. In this paper, we continue our quest and characterize additive module *-functors $\omega:\mathfrak{C}_q(\mathbb{G}^{\Gamma^2})\rightarrow\mathsf{Hilb}$, which serve as a categorification of linear *-functionals (ie. a state) on a $C^*$-algebra. These allow us to construct non-Abelian Wilson surface correlations $\widehat{\mathfrak{C}}_q(\mathbb{G}^{P})$ on the discrete 2d simple polyhedra $P$ partitioning 3-manifolds. By proving its stable equivalence under 3d handlebody moves, these Wilson surface states extend to decorated 3-dimensional marked bordisms in a 4-disc $D^4$. This provides invariants of framed oriented 2-ribbonsin $D^4$ from the data of the given compact Lie 2-group $\mathbb{G}$. We find that these 2-Chern-Simons-type 2-ribbon invariants are given by bigraded $\mathbb{Z}$-modules, similar to the lasagna skein modules of Manolescu-Walker-Wedrich.

Categorical quantum symmetries and ribbon tensor 2-categories

In a companion work on the combinatorial quantization of 4d 2-Chern-Simons theory, the author has constructed the Hopf category of quantum 2-gauge transformations $\tilde{C}=\mathbb{U}_q\mathfrak{G}$ acting on the discrete surface-holonomy configurations on a lattice. We prove in this article that the 2-$\mathsf{Hilb}$-enriched 2-representation 2-category $\operatorname{2Rep}(\tilde C)$ of finite semisimple $\mathbb{C}$-linear $\tilde C$-module categories is braided, planar-pivotal, and lax rigid, hence $\operatorname{2Rep}(\tilde C)$ provides an example of a ribbon tensor 2-category. We explicitly construct the ribbon balancing functors, and exhibit their coherence conditions against the rigid dagger structures. This allows one to refine the various notions of \textit{framing} in a 2-category with duals that have been previously studied in the literature. Following the 2-tangle hypothesis of Baez-Langford, framed invariants of 2-tangles can then be constructed from ribbon 2-functors into $\operatorname{2Rep}(\tilde C)$, analogous to the definition of decorated ribbon graphs in the Reshetikhin-Turaev construction. We will also prove that, in the classical limit $q\rightarrow 1$, the 2-category $\operatorname{2Rep}(\mathbb{U}_{q=1}\mathfrak{G})$ becomes strict pivotal in the sense of Douglas-Reutter.

Combinatorial quantization of 4d 2-Chern-Simons theory I: the Hopf category of higher-graph states

2-Chern-Simons theory, or more commonly known as 4d BF-BB theory with gauged shift symmetry, is a natural generalization of Chern-Simons theory to 4-dimensional manifolds. It is part of the bestiary of higher-homotopy Maurer-Cartan theories. In this article, we present a framework towards the combinatorial quantization of 2-Chern-Simons theory on the lattice, taking inspiration from the work of Aleskeev-Grosse-Schomerus three decades ago. The central geometric input is a "2-graph" $\Gamma^2$ embedded in a 3d Cauchy slice $\Sigma$, which has equipped the structure of a discrete 2-groupoid. Upon such 2-graphs, we model the extended Wilson surface operators in 2-Chern-Simons holonomies as Crane-Yetter's {\it measureable fields}. We show that the 2-Chern-Simons action endows these 2-graph operators -- as well as their quantum 2-gauge symmetries -- the structure of a Hopf category, and that their associated higher $R$-matrix gives it a categorical quasitriangularity structure, which we call the {\it cobraiding}. This is an explicit realization of the categorical ladder proposal of Baez-Dolan, in the context of Lie group 2-gauge theories on the lattice. Moreover, we will also analyze the lattice 2-algebra on the graph $\Gamma$, and extract the observables from it.

Higher Gauge Theory and Integrability

In recent years, significant progress has been made in the study of integrable systems from a gauge theoretic perspective. This development originated with the introduction of $4$d Chern-Simons theory with defects, which provided a systematic framework for constructing two-dimensional integrable systems. In this article, we propose a novel approach to studying higher-dimensional integrable models employing techniques from higher category theory. Starting with higher Chern-Simons theory on the $4$-manifold $\mathbb{R}\times Y$, we complexify and compactify the real line to $\mathbb{C}P^1$ and introduce the disorder defect $\omega=z^{-1}\mathrm{d} z $. This procedure defines a holomorphic five-dimensional variant of higher Chern-Simons theory, which, when endowed with suitable boundary conditions, allows for the localisation to a three-dimensional theory on $Y$. The equations of motion of the resulting model are equivalent to the flatness of a $2$-connection $(L,H)$, that we then use to construct the corresponding higher holonomies. We prove that these are invariants of homotopies relative boundary, which enables the construction of conserved quantities. The latter are labelled by both the categorical characters of a Lie crossed-module and the infinite number of homotopy classes of surfaces relative boundary in $Y$. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the $3$d theory has left and right acting symmetries whose current algebra is given by an infinite dimensional centrally extended affine Lie 2-algebra. Both of these conditions are direct higher homotopy analogues of the properties satisfied by the 2d Wess-Zumino-Witten CFT, which we therefore interpret as facets of integrable structures.

2-Drinfel'd double symmetry of the 4d Kitaev model

Following the general theory of categorified quantum groups developed by the author previously (arxiv:2304.07398), we construct the 2-Drinfel'd double associated to a finite group $N=G_0$. For $N=\mathbb{Z}_2$, we explicitly compute the braided 2-categories of 2-representations of certain version of this 2-Drinfel'd double, and prove that they characterize precisely the 4d toric code and its spin-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ variant. This result relates the two descriptions (categorical vs. field theoretical) of 4d gapped topological phases in existing literature and, perhaps more strikingly, displays the first ever instances of higher Tannakian duality for braided 2-categories. In particular, we show that particular twists of the underlying 2-Drinfel'd double is responsible for much of the higher-structural properties that arise in 4d topological orders.

Integrability from categorification and the 2-Kac-Moody Algebra

The theory of Lie bialgebras and the classical Yang-Baxter equation plays a major role in the study of 1+1d integrable systems; many families of integrable systems can be recovered from a Lax pair which is constructed from a Lie bialgebra. A categorified, higher homotopy notion of Lie algebras has been studied, which gave rise to the notion of (strict) Lie 2-bialgebras (Lie algebra crossed-modules) and the 2-graded Yang-Baxter equations. In this paper, we use these differential graded structures to generalize the construction of a Lax pair and introduce an appropriate notion of higher-dimensional integrability. Within this framework, we introduce a higher derived version of the affine Kac-Moody algebra, which underpins the 2-graded Lax integrability that we have developed here as a zero 2-curvature condition. As an explicit demonstration, we will consider a 3d field theory and show that it (i) is 2-graded Lax integrable and (ii) hosts symmetries governed by a Kac-Moody 2-algebra.

Hopf 2-algebras and Braided Monoidal 2-Categories

Following the theory of principal $\infty$-bundles of Niklaus-Schreiber-Steveson, we develop a homotopy categorification of Hopf algebras, which model quantum groups. We study their higher-representation theory in the setting of $\mathsf{2Vect}^{hBC}$, which is a homotopy refinement of the notion of 2-vector spaces due to Baez-Crans that allows for higher coherence data. We construct in particular the 2-quantum double as a homotopy double crossed product, and prove its duality and factorization properties. We also define and characterize "2-$R$-matrices", which can be seen as an extension of the usual notion of $R$-matrix in an ordinary Hopf algebra. We found that the 2-Yang-Baxter equations describe the braiding of extended defects in 4d, distinct from but not unlike the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equations. The main results we prove in this paper is that the 2-representation 2-category of a weak 2-bialgebra is braided monoidal if it is equipped with a universal 2-$R$-matrix, and that our homotopy quantization admits the theory of Lie 2-bialgebras as a semiclassical limit.

Gauging the Gauge and Anomaly Resolution

In this paper, we explore the algebraic and geometric structures that arise from a procedure we dub "gauging the gauge", which involves the promotion of a certain global, coordinate independent symmetry to a local one. By gauging the global 1-form shift symmetry in a gauge theory, we demonstrate that the structure of a Lie algebra crossed-module and its associated 2-gauge theory arises. Moreover, performing this procedure once again on a 2-gauge theory generates a 3-gauge theory, based on Lie algebra 2-crossed-modules. As such, we show that the physical procedure of "gauging the gauge" can be understood mathematically as a categorification. Applications of such higher-gauge structures are considered, including general relativity, high-energy physics and condensed matter theory. Of particular interest is the mechanism of anomaly resolution, in which one introduces a higher-gauge structure to absorb curvature defects. This mechanism has been shown to allow one to consistently gauge an anomalous background symmetry in QFT

(2-)Drinfel'd Double and (2-)BF Theory

The gauge symmetry and shift/translational symmetry of a 3D BF action, which are associated to a pair of dual Lie algebras, can be combined to form the Drinfel'd double. This combined symmetry is the gauge symmetry of the Chern-Simons action which is equivalent to the BF action, up to some boundary term. We show that something similar happens in 4D when considering a 2-BF action (aka BFCG action), whose symmetries are specified in terms of a pair of dual strict Lie 2-algebras (ie. crossed-modules). Combining these symmetries gives rise to a 2-Drinfel'd double which becomes the gauge symmetry structure of a 4D BF theory, up to a boundary term. Concretely, we show how using 2-gauge transformations based on dual crossed-modules, the notion of 2-Drinfel'd double defined in Ref. arXiv:1109.1344 appears. We also discuss how, similarly to the Lie algebra case, the symmetric contribution of the $r$-matrix of the 2-Drinfel'd double can be interpreted as a quadratic 2-Casimir, which allows to recover the notion of duality.

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem and the Filling Constraint

Following recent developments in the classification of bosonic short-range entangled phases, we examine many-body quantum systems whose ground state fractionalization obeys the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem. We generalize the topological classification of such phases by LSM anomalies (arXiv:1907.08204) to take magnetic and non-symmorphic lattice effects into account, and provide direct computations of the LSM anomaly in specific examples. We show that the anomaly-free condition coincides with established filling constraints (arXiv:1705.09298, arXiv:1505.04193), and we also derived new ones on novel crystalline quantum systems.

Interacting quantum Hall states in a finite graphene flake and at finite temperature

The integer quantum Hall states at fillings $ν= 0$ and $|ν| = 1$ in monolayer graphene have drawn much attention as they are generated by electron-electron interactions. Here we explore aspects of the $ν= 0$ and $|ν| = 1$ quantum Hall states relevant for experimental samples. In particular, we study the effects of finite extent and finite temperature on the $ν= 0$ state and finite temperature for the $ν= 1$ state. For the $ν= 0$ state we consider the situation in which the bulk is a canted antiferromagnet and use parameters consistent with measurements of the bulk gap to study the edge states in tilted magnetic fields in order to compare with experiment [A. F. Young et al., Nature 505, 528 (2014)]. When spatial modulation of the order parameters is taken into account, we find that for graphene placed on boron nitride, the gap at the edge closes for magnetic fields comparable to those in experiment, giving rise to edge conduction with $G \sim 2e^2/h$ while the bulk gap remains almost unchanged. We also study the transition into the ordered state at finite temperature and field. We determine the scaling of critical temperatures as a function of magnetic field, $B$, and distance to the zero field critical point and find sublinear scaling with magnetic field for weak and intermediate strength interactions, and $\sqrt{B}$ scaling at the coupling associated with the zero field quantum critical point. We also predict that critical temperatures for $ν= 0$ states should be an order of magnitude higher than those for $|ν| = 1$ states, consistent with the fact that the low temperature gap for $ν= 0$ is roughly an order of magnitude larger than that for $|ν| = 1$.
