Sub-cycle doublon-holon dynamics in one-dimensional Mott insulators revealed by two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy

Solid-state high-harmonic spectroscopy is becoming an emerging tool for probing nonequilibrium many-body dynamics. Yet, direct measurements of strongly driven, sub-optical-cycle dynamics in correlated materials during high-harmonic emission remain largely unexplored. Here, we measure high-harmonic emission chirp in a prototypical one-dimensional Mott insulator, which encodes strongly driven doublon-holon dynamics at sub-optical-cycle timescales. We observe a positive chirp for above band gap harmonics, indicating that high harmonics are dominated by doublon-holon recombinations. We further show a harmonic order-dependent dephasing, which can be understood through different doublon-holon excursion distances associated with each harmonic. These results reveal coherent doublon-holon dynamics and their ultrafast dephasing in Mott insulators, which is relevant to other nonequilibrium light-induced phenomena, such as Floquet engineering.

From Saliency to Discriminability: Rank-Preserving Visual Token Pruning for VLM Rerankers

Large vision-language models used as listwise rerankers must jointly process visual tokens from tens of candidates per query, making token pruning essential for practical deployment. Existing pruning methods retain tokens by attention saliency, yet we show that saliency is systematically misaligned with ranking contribution: visually prominent tokens often capture order-neutral patterns shared across candidates. This mismatch is layer-dependent: saliency becomes informative only where attention is concentrated, and normalized attention entropy diagnoses the reliability shift (Pearson r=0.87). We propose RaDiCal (Rank-Discriminative Calibration), a training-free framework that uses normalized attention entropy to decide when saliency can be trusted, fusing it with an attention-free rank-discriminative prior and selecting pruning layers from the same trust landscape. Across three retrieval benchmarks and multiple VLM architectures, RaDiCal matches Dense MRR@10 on Flickr30K and surpasses it on MSCOCO at a 20% token budget, ranks first among all pruning methods on FashionIQ, and holds within 1.2 pp on Flickr30K and MSCOCO at 10% retention. It cuts FLOPs by 39--45% and delivers 1.28--1.45$\times$ measured speedups across two VLM architectures without dataset-specific retuning.

Slow Dephasing of Coherent Optical Phonons in Two-dimensional Lead Organic Chalcogenides

Hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors with strong electron-phonon interactions provide a programmable platform for developing a variety of electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum materials by controlling these interactions. However, in current hybrid semiconductors, such as halide perovskites, anharmonic vibrations with rapid dephasing hinder the ability to coherently manipulate phonons. Here, we report the observation of long-lived coherent phonons in lead organic chalcogenides (LOCs), a new family of hybrid two-dimensional semiconductors. These materials feature harmonic phonon dynamics despite distorted lattices, combining long phonon dephasing times with tunable semiconducting properties. Dephasing time as long as 75 ps at 10 K, with up to 500 cycles of phonon oscillation between scattering events, was observed, corresponding to a dimensionless harmonicity parameter more than an order of magnitude larger than that of halide perovskites. The phonon dephasing time is significantly influenced by anharmonicity and centrosymmetry, both of which can be tuned through the design of the organic ligands thanks to the direct bonding between the organic and inorganic motifs. This research opens new opportunities for the manipulation of electronic properties with coherent phonons in hybrid semiconductors.
