Discovery of a Single-Band Mott Insulator in a van der Waals Flat-Band Compound

The Mott insulator provides an excellent foundation for exploring a wide range of strongly correlated physical phenomena, such as high-temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquid, and colossal magnetoresistance. A Mott insulator with the simplest degree of freedom is an ideal and highly desirable system for studying the fundamental physics of Mottness. In this study, we have unambiguously identified such an anticipated Mott insulator in a van der Waals layered compound Nb3Cl8. In the high-temperature phase, where interlayer coupling is negligible, density functional theory calculations for the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 suggest a half-filled flat band at the Fermi level, whereas angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments observe a large gap. This observation is perfectly reproduced by dynamical mean-field theory calculations considering strong electron correlations, indicating a correlation-driven Mott insulator state. Since this half-filled band derived from a single 2a1 orbital is isolated from all other bands, the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 is an ideal realization of the celebrated single-band Hubbard model. Upon decreasing the temperature, the bulk system undergoes a phase transition, where structural changes significantly enhance the interlayer coupling. This results in a bonding-antibonding splitting in the Hubbard bands, while the Mott gap remains dominant. Our discovery provides a simple and seminal model system for investigating Mott physics and other emerging correlated states.

Evaluation of Infrastructure-based Warning System on Driving Behaviors-A Roundabout Study

Smart intersections have the potential to improve road safety with sensing, communication, and edge computing technologies. Perception sensors installed at a smart intersection can monitor the traffic environment in real time and send infrastructure-based warnings to nearby travelers through V2X communication. This paper investigated how infrastructure-based warnings can influence driving behaviors and improve roundabout safety through a driving-simulator study - a challenging driving scenario for human drivers. A co-simulation platform integrating Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and Webots was developed to serve as the driving simulator. A real-world roundabout in Ann Arbor, Michigan was built in the co-simulation platform as the study area, and the merging scenarios were investigated. 36 participants were recruited and asked to navigate the roundabout under three danger levels (e.g., low, medium, high) and three collision warning designs (e.g., no warning, warning issued 1 second in advance, warning issued 2 seconds in advance). Results indicated that advanced warnings can significantly enhance safety by minimizing potential risks compared to scenarios without warnings. Earlier warnings enabled smoother driver responses and reduced abrupt decelerations. In addition, a personalized intention prediction model was developed to predict drivers' stop-or-go decisions when the warning is displayed. Among all tested machine learning models, the XGBoost model achieved the highest prediction accuracy with a precision rate of 95.56% and a recall rate of 97.73%.

Make Pixels Dance: High-Dynamic Video Generation

Creating high-dynamic videos such as motion-rich actions and sophisticated visual effects poses a significant challenge in the field of artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, current state-of-the-art video generation methods, primarily focusing on text-to-video generation, tend to produce video clips with minimal motions despite maintaining high fidelity. We argue that relying solely on text instructions is insufficient and suboptimal for video generation. In this paper, we introduce PixelDance, a novel approach based on diffusion models that incorporates image instructions for both the first and last frames in conjunction with text instructions for video generation. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that PixelDance trained with public data exhibits significantly better proficiency in synthesizing videos with complex scenes and intricate motions, setting a new standard for video generation.

Provoking topology by octahedral tilting in strained SrNbO$_3$

Transition metal oxides with a wide variety of electronic and magnetic properties offer an extraordinary possibility to be a platform for developing future electronics based on unconventional quantum phenomena, for instance, the topology. The formation of topologically non-trivial states is related to crystalline symmetry, spin-orbit coupling, and magnetic ordering. Here, we demonstrate how lattice distortions and octahedral rotation in SrNbO$_3$ films induce the band topology. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we verify the presence of in-phase $a^0a^0c^+$ octahedral rotation in ultra-thin SrNbO$_3$ films, which causes the formation of topologically-protected Dirac band crossings. Our study illustrates that octahedral engineering can be effectively exploited for implanting and controlling quantum topological phases in transition metal oxides.

Enhancing Multimodal Compositional Reasoning of Visual Language Models with Generative Negative Mining

Contemporary large-scale visual language models (VLMs) exhibit strong representation capacities, making them ubiquitous for enhancing image and text understanding tasks. They are often trained in a contrastive manner on a large and diverse corpus of images and corresponding text captions scraped from the internet. Despite this, VLMs often struggle with compositional reasoning tasks which require a fine-grained understanding of the complex interactions of objects and their attributes. This failure can be attributed to two main factors: 1) Contrastive approaches have traditionally focused on mining negative examples from existing datasets. However, the mined negative examples might not be difficult for the model to discriminate from the positive. An alternative to mining would be negative sample generation 2) But existing generative approaches primarily focus on generating hard negative texts associated with a given image. Mining in the other direction, i.e., generating negative image samples associated with a given text has been ignored. To overcome both these limitations, we propose a framework that not only mines in both directions but also generates challenging negative samples in both modalities, i.e., images and texts. Leveraging these generative hard negative samples, we significantly enhance VLMs' performance in tasks involving multimodal compositional reasoning. Our code and dataset are released at https://ugorsahin.github.io/enhancing-multimodal-compositional-reasoning-of-vlm.html.

Toward Building General Foundation Models for Language, Vision, and Vision-Language Understanding Tasks

Foundation models or pre-trained models have substantially improved the performance of various language, vision, and vision-language understanding tasks. However, existing foundation models can only perform the best in one type of tasks, namely language, vision, or vision-language. It is still an open question whether it is possible to construct a foundation model performing the best for all the understanding tasks, which we call a general foundation model. In this paper, we propose a new general foundation model, X-FM (the X-Foundation Model). X-FM has one language encoder, one vision encoder, and one fusion encoder, as well as a new training method. The training method includes two new techniques for learning X-FM from text, image, and image-text pair data. One is to stop gradients from the vision-language training when learning the language encoder. The other is to leverage the vision-language training to guide the learning of the vision encoder. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets show that X-FM can significantly outperform existing general foundation models and perform better than or comparable to existing foundation models specifically for language, vision, or vision-language understanding. Code and pre-trained models are released at https://github.com/zhangxinsong-nlp/XFM.

Deep Concept Removal

We address the problem of concept removal in deep neural networks, aiming to learn representations that do not encode certain specified concepts (e.g., gender etc.) We propose a novel method based on adversarial linear classifiers trained on a concept dataset, which helps to remove the targeted attribute while maintaining model performance. Our approach Deep Concept Removal incorporates adversarial probing classifiers at various layers of the network, effectively addressing concept entanglement and improving out-of-distribution generalization. We also introduce an implicit gradient-based technique to tackle the challenges associated with adversarial training using linear classifiers. We evaluate the ability to remove a concept on a set of popular distributionally robust optimization (DRO) benchmarks with spurious correlations, as well as out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization tasks.

Design of Chain-of-Thought in Math Problem Solving

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) plays a crucial role in reasoning for math problem solving. We conduct a comprehensive examination of methods for designing CoT, comparing conventional natural language CoT with various program CoTs, including the self-describing program, the comment-describing program, and the non-describing program. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of programming language on program CoTs, comparing Python and Wolfram Language. Through extensive experiments on GSM8K, MATHQA, and SVAMP, we find that program CoTs often have superior effectiveness in math problem solving. Notably, the best performing combination with 30B parameters beats GPT-3.5-turbo by a significant margin. The results show that self-describing program offers greater diversity and thus can generally achieve higher performance. We also find that Python is a better choice of language than Wolfram for program CoTs. The experimental results provide a valuable guideline for future CoT designs that take into account both programming language and coding style for further advancements. Our datasets and code are publicly available.

Uncertainty-Aware Instance Reweighting for Off-Policy Learning

Off-policy learning, referring to the procedure of policy optimization with access only to logged feedback data, has shown importance in various real-world applications, such as search engines, recommender systems, and etc. While the ground-truth logging policy, which generates the logged data, is usually unknown, previous work simply takes its estimated value in off-policy learning, ignoring both high bias and high variance resulted from such an estimator, especially on samples with small and inaccurately estimated logging probabilities. In this work, we explicitly model the uncertainty in the estimated logging policy and propose a Uncertainty-aware Inverse Propensity Score estimator (UIPS) for improved off-policy learning, with a theoretical convergence guarantee. Experiment results on synthetic and three real-world recommendation datasets demonstrate the advantageous sample efficiency of the proposed UIPS estimator against an extensive list of state-of-the-art baselines.

Translation gauge field theory of gravity in Minkowski spacetime

The gravitational field with spin-2 is introduced naturally by the requirement that the Lagrangian is locally translation invariant in Minkowski spacetime. The interactions between the gravitational field and spin-1/2, 0, 1 matter fields are obtained along with the Lagrangian for the gravitational field including self-interactions. The deflection angle of light when it passes through the sun is calculated with different gauge conditions as an example. Our leading-order result is the same as that from general relativity, although the basic ideas are different. It is interesting that gravity can be described in a similar way to other fundamental interactions in Minkowski spacetime, and it may provide a new scenario for the Universe.

Generative Diffusion Models on Graphs: Methods and Applications

Diffusion models, as a novel generative paradigm, have achieved remarkable success in various image generation tasks such as image inpainting, image-to-text translation, and video generation. Graph generation is a crucial computational task on graphs with numerous real-world applications. It aims to learn the distribution of given graphs and then generate new graphs. Given the great success of diffusion models in image generation, increasing efforts have been made to leverage these techniques to advance graph generation in recent years. In this paper, we first provide a comprehensive overview of generative diffusion models on graphs, In particular, we review representative algorithms for three variants of graph diffusion models, i.e., Score Matching with Langevin Dynamics (SMLD), Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (DDPM), and Score-based Generative Model (SGM). Then, we summarize the major applications of generative diffusion models on graphs with a specific focus on molecule and protein modeling. Finally, we discuss promising directions in generative diffusion models on graph-structured data. For this survey, we also created a GitHub project website by collecting the supporting resources for generative diffusion models on graphs, at the link: https://github.com/ChengyiLIU-cs/Generative-Diffusion-Models-on-Graphs

Do DALL-E and Flamingo Understand Each Other?

The field of multimodal research focusing on the comprehension and creation of both images and text has witnessed significant strides. This progress is exemplified by the emergence of sophisticated models dedicated to image captioning at scale, such as the notable Flamingo model and text-to-image generative models, with DALL-E serving as a prominent example. An interesting question worth exploring in this domain is whether Flamingo and DALL-E understand each other. To study this question, we propose a reconstruction task where Flamingo generates a description for a given image and DALL-E uses this description as input to synthesize a new image. We argue that these models understand each other if the generated image is similar to the given image. Specifically, we study the relationship between the quality of the image reconstruction and that of the text generation. We find that an optimal description of an image is one that gives rise to a generated image similar to the original one. The finding motivates us to propose a unified framework to finetune the text-to-image and image-to-text models. Concretely, the reconstruction part forms a regularization loss to guide the tuning of the models. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets with different image captioning and image generation models validate our findings and demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed unified framework. As DALL-E and Flamingo are not publicly available, we use Stable Diffusion and BLIP in the remaining work. Project website: https://dalleflamingo.github.io.

Aggregating Single-wheeled Mobile Robots for Omnidirectional Movements

This paper presents a novel modular robot system that can self-reconfigure to achieve omnidirectional movements for collaborative object transportation. Each robotic module is equipped with a steerable omni-wheel for navigation and is shaped as a regular icositetragon with a permanent magnet installed on each corner for stable docking. After aggregating multiple modules and forming a structure that can cage a target object, we have developed an optimization-based method to compute the distribution of all wheels' heading directions, which enables efficient omnidirectional movements of the structure. By implementing a hierarchical controller on our prototyped system in both simulation and experiment, we validated the trajectory tracking performance of an individual module and a team of six modules in multiple navigation and collaborative object transportation settings. The results demonstrate that the proposed system can maintain a stable caging formation and achieve smooth transportation, indicating the effectiveness of our hardware and locomotion designs.

High-fidelity achromatic metalens imaging via deep neural network

Meta-optics are attracting intensive interest as alternatives to traditional optical systems comprising multiple lenses and diffractive elements. Among applications, single metalens imaging is highly attractive due to the potential for achieving significant size reduction and simplified design. However, single metalenses exhibit severe chromatic aberration arising from material dispersion and the nature of singlet optics, making them unsuitable for full-color imaging requiring achromatic performance. In this work, we propose and validate a deep learning-based single metalens imaging system to overcome chromatic aberration in varied scenarios. The developed deep learning networks computationally reconstruct raw imaging captures through reliably refocusing red, green and blue channels to eliminate chromatic aberration and enhance resolution without altering the metalens hardware. The networks demonstrate consistent enhancement across different aperture sizes and focusing distances. Images outside the training set and real-world photos were also successfully reconstructed. Our approach provides a new means to achieve achromatic metalenses without complex engineering, enabling practical and simplified implementation to overcome inherent limitations of meta-optics.

X$^2$-VLM: All-In-One Pre-trained Model For Vision-Language Tasks

Vision language pre-training aims to learn alignments between vision and language from a large amount of data. Most existing methods only learn image-text alignments. Some others utilize pre-trained object detectors to leverage vision language alignments at the object level. In this paper, we propose to learn multi-grained vision language alignments by a unified pre-training framework that learns multi-grained aligning and multi-grained localization simultaneously. Based on it, we present X$^2$-VLM, an all-in-one model with a flexible modular architecture, in which we further unify image-text pre-training and video-text pre-training in one model. X$^2$-VLM is able to learn unlimited visual concepts associated with diverse text descriptions. Experiment results show that X$^2$-VLM performs the best on base and large scale for both image-text and video-text tasks, making a good trade-off between performance and model scale. Moreover, we show that the modular design of X$^2$-VLM results in high transferability for it to be utilized in any language or domain. For example, by simply replacing the text encoder with XLM-R, X$^2$-VLM outperforms state-of-the-art multilingual multi-modal pre-trained models without any multilingual pre-training. The code and pre-trained models are available at https://github.com/zengyan-97/X2-VLM.

Sequential Manipulation Planning for Over-actuated Unmanned Aerial Manipulators

We investigate the sequential manipulation planning problem for unmanned aerial manipulators (UAMs). Unlike prior work that primarily focuses on one-step manipulation tasks, sequential manipulations require coordinated motions of a UAM's floating base, the manipulator, and the object being manipulated, entailing a unified kinematics and dynamics model for motion planning under designated constraints. By leveraging a virtual kinematic chain (VKC)-based motion planning framework that consolidates components' kinematics into one chain, the sequential manipulation task of a UAM can be planned as a whole, yielding more coordinated motions. Integrating the kinematics and dynamics models with a hierarchical control framework, we demonstrate, for the first time, an over-actuated UAM achieves a series of new sequential manipulation capabilities in both simulation and experiment.

Sensing Aided Uplink Transmission in OTFS ISAC with Joint Parameter Association, Channel Estimation and Signal Detection

In this work, we study sensing-aided uplink transmission in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) vehicular network with the use of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. To exploit sensing parameters for improving uplink communications, the parameters must be first associated with the transmitters, which is a challenging task. We propose a scheme that jointly conducts parameter association, channel estimation and signal detection by formulating it as a constrained bilinear recovery problem. Then we develop a message passing algorithm to solve the problem, leveraging the bilinear unitary approximate message passing (Bi-UAMP) algorithm. Numerical results validate the proposed scheme, which show that relevant performance bounds can be closely approached.

Robust Power Allocation for Integrated Visible Light Positioning and Communication Networks

Integrated visible light positioning and communication (VLPC), capable of combining advantages of visible light communications (VLC) and visible light positioning (VLP), is a promising key technology for the future Internet of Things. In VLPC networks, positioning and communications are inherently coupled, which has not been sufficiently explored in the literature. We propose a robust power allocation scheme for integrated VLPC Networks by exploiting the intrinsic relationship between positioning and communications. Specifically, we derive explicit relationships between random positioning errors, following both a Gaussian distribution and an arbitrary distribution, and channel state information errors. Then, we minimize the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of positioning errors, subject to the rate outage constraint and the power constraints, which is a chance-constrained optimization problem and generally computationally intractable. To circumvent the nonconvex challenge, we conservatively transform the chance constraints to deterministic forms by using the Bernstein-type inequality and the conditional value-at-risk for the Gaussian and arbitrary distributed positioning errors, respectively, and then approximate them as convex semidefinite programs. Finally, simulation results verify the robustness and effectiveness of our proposed integrated VLPC design schemes.
