Neutron Double-Differential Cross Sections for Spallation Reactions from an ANN Model

In this paper, we present a data-driven artificial neural network (ANN) model for describing the double differential cross sections (DDCS) of neutron emission in nuclear spallation reactions. The ANN model is found to be precise, flexible, and efficient in predicting differential cross sections of nuclear reactions and in learning the complex dependence of neutron DDCS on the projectile energy ($T_p$), target nucleus ($A$ and $Z$), neutron energy ($T_n$), and neutron emission angle ($θ_n$). The model is trained on replicas of experimental data that incorporate uncertainties. Several regularization schemes are examined during ANN training. The input variables of the constructed ANN framework are also investigated, and the following six key variables are selected for the input layer of the ANN model: $θ_{n}$, ${\rm log}(T_n/T_p)$, $T_n/T_p$, ${\rm log}(T_p)$, $A^{2/3}$, and $N/Z$. The ANN predictions are compared with training data provided by various experimental collaborations, showing excellent agreement. The resulting model is further tested on test data with projectile energies, target nuclei, and neutron emission angles different from those in the training data, indicating strong predictive power and generalization capability of the ANN framework. As an illustration, the neutron DDCS as functions of $T_n$, $θ_n$, and projectile energy $T_p$ are predicted and presented for copper target. The proposed high-precision ANN model is expected to be beneficial for accelerator-driven system (ADS) design and many other applications in nuclear physics, astrophysics, and nuclear technology development.

Towards a high-intensity muon source at CiADS

The proposal of a high-intensity muon source driven by the CiADS linac, which has the potential to be one of the state-of-the-art facilities, is presented in this paper. We briefly introduce the development progress of the superconducting linac of CiADS. Then the consideration of challenges related to the high-power muon production target is given and the liquid lithium jet muon production target concept is proposed, for the first time. The exploration of the optimal target geometry for surface muon production efficiency and the investigation into the performance of liquid lithium jet target in muon rate are given. Based on the comparison between the liquid lithium jet target and the rotation graphite target, from perspectives of surface muon production efficiency, heat processing ability and target geometry compactness, the advantages of the new target concept are demonstrated and described comprehensively. The technical challenges and the feasibility of the free-surface liquid lithium target are discussed.

A Sterile Neutrino Search at compact materials irradiation facility

The compact material irradiation facility (CMIF) is a current project in China that will provide a compact deuteron-beryllium neutron source. The target of this facility will be an intense and compact Isotope Decay-At-Rest (IsoDAR) neutrino source. In this paper, we propose to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis using CMIF as the neutrino source. At CMIF platform, the electron antineutrino production rate can be up to $2.0\times 10^{19}$ per day. When paired with an 80 t liquid scintillator detector to study short baseline electron antineutrino disappearance, the inverse beta decay (IBD) event rate is large enough to investigate the parameter ranges of interest for neutrino anomalies. Our sensitivity analysis shows that a short baseline experiment at this platform will provide a very competitive sterile neutrino search, especially in the high-$Δm^2$ region ($Δm^2 >10\,\text{eV}^2$).
