An Ordered Magnetic Field in the Protoplanetary Disk of AB Aur Revealed by Mid-Infrared Polarimetry

Magnetic fields (B-fields) play a key role in the formation and evolution of protoplanetary disks, but their properties are poorly understood due to the lack of observational constraints. Using CanariCam at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias, we have mapped out the mid-infrared polarization of the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star AB Aur. We detect ~0.44% polarization at 10.3 micron from AB Aur's inner disk (r < 80 AU), rising to ~1.4% at larger radii. Our simulations imply that the mid-infrared polarization of the inner disk arises from dichroic emission of elongated particles aligned in a disk B-field. The field is well ordered on a spatial scale commensurate with our resolution (~50 AU), and we infer a poloidal shape tilted from the rotational axis of the disk. The disk of AB Aur is optically thick at 10.3 micron, so polarimetry at this wavelength is probing the B-field near the disk surface. Our observations therefore confirm that this layer, favored by some theoretical studies for developing magneto-rotational instability and its resultant viscosity, is indeed very likely to be magnetized. At radii beyond ~80 AU, the mid-infrared polarization results primarily from scattering by dust grains with sizes up to ~1 micron, a size indicating both grain growth and, probably, turbulent lofting of the particles from the disk mid-plane.

Modularity in Complex Multilayer Networks with Multiple Aspects: A Static Perspective

Complex systems are usually illustrated by networks which captures the topology of the interactions between the entities. To better understand the roles played by the entities in the system one needs to uncover the underlying community structure of the system. In recent years, systems with interactions that have various types or can change over time between the entities have attracted an increasing research attention. However, algorithms aiming to solve the key problem - community detection - in multilayer networks are still limited. In this work, we first introduce the multilayer network model representation with multiple aspects, which is flexible to a variety of networks. Then based on this model, we naturally derive the multilayer modularity - a widely adopted objective function of community detection in networks - from a static perspective as an evaluation metric to evaluate the quality of the communities detected in multilayer networks. It enables us to better understand the essence of the modularity by pointing out the specific kind of communities that will lead to a high modularity score. We also propose a spectral method called mSpec for the optimization of the proposed modularity function based on the supra-adjacency representation of the multilayer networks. Experiments on the electroencephalograph network and the comparison results on several empirical multilayer networks demonstrate the feasibility and reliable performance of the proposed method.

Community Detection Using Multilayer Edge Mixture Model

A wide range of complex systems can be modeled as networks with corresponding constraints on the edges and nodes, which have been extensively studied in recent years. Nowadays, with the progress of information technology, systems that contain the information collected from multiple perspectives have been generated. The conventional models designed for single perspective networks fail to depict the diverse topological properties of such systems, so multilayer network models aiming at describing the structure of these networks emerge. As a major concern in network science, decomposing the networks into communities, which usually refers to closely interconnected node groups, extracts valuable information about the structure and interactions of the network. Unlike the contention of dozens of models and methods in conventional single-layer networks, methods aiming at discovering the communities in the multilayer networks are still limited. In order to help explore the community structure in multilayer networks, we propose the multilayer edge mixture model, which explores a relatively general form of a community structure evaluator from an edge combination view. As an example, we demonstrate that the multilayer modularity and stochastic blockmodels can be derived from the proposed model. We also explore the decomposition of community structure evaluators with specific forms to the multilayer edge mixture model representation, which turns out to reveal some new interpretation of the evaluators. The flexibility and performance on different networks of the proposed model are illustrated with applications on a series of benchmark networks.

Multi-lingual Geoparsing based on Machine Translation

Our method for multi-lingual geoparsing uses monolingual tools and resources along with machine translation and alignment to return location words in many languages. Not only does our method save the time and cost of developing geoparsers for each language separately, but also it allows the possibility of a wide range of language capabilities within a single interface. We evaluated our method in our LanguageBridge prototype on location named entities using newswire, broadcast news and telephone conversations in English, Arabic and Chinese data from the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC). Our results for geoparsing Chinese and Arabic text using our multi-lingual geoparsing method are comparable to our results for geoparsing English text with our English tools. Furthermore, experiments using our machine translation approach results in accuracy comparable to results from the same data that was translated manually.

An efficient scheme to optimize the superconducting levitation via genetic algorithm

The superconducting levitation consisting of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) and permanent magnet guideway (PMG) is deemed promising technique for the advancement of the maglev transit. To improve the cost-efficiency and thus reduce the investment of this superconducting levitation transit, the optimization of the PMG is the most critical issue of practical interest since it serves as the continuous rail to generate the magnetic field by the rare-earth magnets. By the use of a generalized vector potential within the quasistatic approximation as the state variable to mathematically describe the HTS as well as the surrounding medium, an efficient scheme for optimizing the superconducting levitation has been developed with the genetic algorithm as a strategy to perform the global search of the PMG. This scheme directly describes the HTS element without simplification of its intractable nonlinearity of constitutive law, which renders this study stand out from the existing efforts. The testing of the proposed scheme on a typical optimization of the superconducting levitation has proven its robustness and efficiency, i.e., the time cost is merely 3.6 hours with 3000 individuals evaluated on a moderate desktop. Taking a HTS over the Halbach-derived PMG as a practice, a set of case studies were carried out to understand how the working condition, geometrical and material characteristics of the HTS affect its maximum levitation force achievable at different constraints of the cross-section of the PMG. The findings attained by the case studies, being inaccessible from the experiments, are aimed to provide useful implications for the optimization of a superconducting levitation system for the transit and analogous purposes.

Multilayer black phosphorus as broadband saturable absorber for pulsed lasers from 1 to 2.7 μm wavelength

It attracts wide interest to seek universe saturable absorber covering wavelengths from near infrared to mid-infrared band. Multilayer black phosphorus, with variable direct bandgap (0.3-2 eV) depending on the layer number, becomes a good alternative as a universe saturable absorber for pulsed lasers. In this contribution, we first experimentally demonstrated broadband saturable absorption of multilayer black phosphorus from 1 μm to 2.7 μm wavelength. With the as-fabricated black phosphorus nanoflakes as saturable absorber, stable Q-switching operation of bulk lasers at 1.03 μm, 1.93 μm, 2.72 μm were realized, respectively. In contrast with large-bandgap semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, such as MoS2, MoSe2, multilayer black phosphorus shows particular advantage at the long wavelength regime thanks to its narrow direct bandgap. This work will open promising optoelectronic applications of black phosphorus in mid-infrared spectral region and further demonstrate that BP may fill the gap of between zero-bandgap graphene and large-bandgap TMDs.

Black phosphorus as saturable absorber for the Q-switched Er:ZBLAN fiber laser at 2.8 μm

Black phosphorus, a newly emerged two-dimensional material, has attracted wide attention as novel photonic material. Here, multi-layer black phosphorus is successfully fabricated by liquid phase exfoliation method. By employing black phosphorus as saturable absorber, we demonstrate a passively Q-switched Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser at the wavelength of 2.8 μm. The modulation depth and saturation fluence of the black phosphorus saturable absorber are measured to be 15% and 9 μJ/cm2, respectively. The Q-switched fiber laser delivers a maximum average power of 485 mW with corresponding pulse energy of 7.7 μJ and pulse width of 1.18 μs at repetition rate of 63 kHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate that black phosphorus can realize Q-switching of 2.8-μm fiber laser. Our research results show that black phosphorus is a promising saturable absorber for mid-infrared pulsed lasers.

Black Phosphorus-Polymer Composites for Pulsed Lasers

Black phosphorus is a very promising material for telecommunication due to its direct bandgap and strong resonant absorption in near-infrared wavelength range. However, ultrafast nonlinear photonic applications relying on the ultrafast photo-carrier dynamics as well as optical nonlinearity in black phosphorus remain unexplored. In this work, we investigate nonlinear optical properties of solution exfoliated BP and demonstrate the usage of BP as a new saturable absorber for high energy pulse generation in fiber laser. In order to avoid the oxidization and degradation of BP, we encapsulated BP by polymer matrix which is optically transparent in the spectrum range of interest to form a composite. Two fabrication approaches were demonstrated to produce BP-polymer composite films which were further incorporated into fiber laser cavity as nonlinear media. BP shows very fast carrier dynamics and BP-polymer composite has a modulation depth of 10.6%. A highly stable Q-switched pulse generation was achieved and the single pulse energy of ~194 nJ was demonstrated. The ease of handling of such black phosphorus-polymer composite thin films affords new opportunities for wider applications such as optical sensing, signal processing and light modulation.

Microfiber-based few-layer black phosphorus saturable absorber for ultra-fast fiber laser

Few-layer black phosphorus (BP), as the most alluring graphene analogue owing to its similar structure as graphene and thickness dependent direct band-gap, has now triggered a new wave of research on two-dimensional (2D) materials based photonics and optoelectronics. However, a major obstacle of practical applications for few-layer BPs comes from their instabilities of laser-induced optical damage. Herein, we demonstrate that, few-layer BPs, fabricated through the liquid exfoliation approach, can be developed as a new and practical saturable absorber (SA) by depositing few-layer BPs with microfiber. The saturable absorption property of few-layer BPs had been verified through an open-aperture z-scan measurement at the telecommunication band and the microfiber-based BP device had been found to show a saturable average power of ~4.5 mW and a modulation depth of 10.9%, which is further confirmed through a balanced twin detection measurement. By further integrating this optical SA device into an erbium-doped fiber laser, it was found that it can deliver the mode-locked pulse with duration down to 940 fs with central wavelength tunable from 1532 nm to 1570 nm. The prevention of BP from oxidation through the 'lateral interaction scheme' owing to this microfiber-based few-layer BP SA device might partially mitigate the optical damage problem of BP. Our results not only demonstrate that black phosphorus might be another promising SA material for ultrafast photonics, but also provide a practical solution to solve the optical damage problem of black phosphorus by assembling with waveguide structures such as microfiber.

Entangling Color-Different Photons via Time-Resolved Measurement and Active Feed-Forward

Entangling independent photons is not only of fundamental interest but also of crucial importance for quantum information science. Two-photon interference is a major method to entangle independent identical photons. If two photons are color-different, perfect two-photon coalescence cannot happen anymore, which makes the entangling of color-different photons difficult to realize. In this letter by exploring and developing time-resolved measurement and active feed-forward, we have entangled two independent photons of different colors for the first time. We find that entanglement with a varying form can be identified for different two-photon temporal modes through time-resolved measurement. By using active feed-forward we are able to convert the varying entanglement into uniform. Adopting these measures, we have successfully entangled two photons with a frequency separation of 16 times larger than their linewidths. In addition to its fundamental interest, our work also provides an approach to solve the frequency mismatch problem for future quantum networks.

Tunable Cobalt Vacancies and Related Properties in LaCoxAs2

The origin of transition metal vacancies and their effects on the properties of ThCr2Si2-type compounds have been less studied and poorly understood. Here we carefully investigate the structure, physical properties, and electronic structure for a series of lanthanum cobalt arsenides with nominal composition of LaCoxAs2 (1.6 < = x < = 2.1). It is revealed that the occupancy of Co can be tuned between 1.98(1) and 1.61(1). The structural analyses based on X-ray and neutron diffractions show the existence of Co vacancies results from charge balance due to the formation of bond between As-As. These Co vacancies affect the magnetic and electrical properties greatly, adjusting the Curie temperature from 205 to 47 K and increasing the resistivity by more than 100%. First principles calculations indicate that the Co vacancies weaken the spin polarization and reduce the density of states at the Fermi level, resulting in decreased Curie temperature and increased resistivity, respectively. Our results address the importance of transition metal vacancies in ThCr2Si2-type materials and offer a reliable route to tune the magnetism of ThCr2Si2-type structure.

Mid-IR Spectra of Type Ia SN 2014J in M82 Spanning the First Four Months

We present a time series of 8 - 13 $μ$m spectra and photometry for SN 2014J obtained 57, 81, 108, and 137 d after the explosion using CanariCam on the Gran Telescopio Canarias. This is the first mid-IR time series ever obtained for a Type Ia supernova. These observations can be understood within the framework of the delayed detonation model and the production of $\sim$0.6 $\rm M_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni, consistent with the observed brightness, the brightness decline relation, and the $γ$-ray fluxes. The [Co III] line at 11.888 $μ$m is particularly useful for evaluating the time evolution of the photosphere and measuring the amount of $^{56}$Ni and thus the mass of the ejecta. Late-time line profiles of SN 2014J are rather symmetric and not shifted in the rest frame. We see Argon emission, which provides a unique probe of mixing in the transition layer between incomplete burning and nuclear statistical equilibrium. We may see [Fe III] and [Ni IV] emission, both of which are observed to be substantially stronger than indicated by our models. If the latter identification is correct, then we are likely observing stable Ni, which might imply central mixing. In addition, electron capture, also required for stable Ni, requires densities larger than $\sim$$1 \times 10^9$ g cm$^{-3}$, which are expected to be present only in white dwarfs close to the Chandrasekhar limit. This study demonstrates that mid-IR studies of Type Ia supernovae are feasible from the ground and provide unique information, but it also indicates the need for better atomic data.

Four New Observational $H(z)$ Data From Luminous Red Galaxies of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven

By adopting the differential age method, we utilize selected 17832 luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven (SDSS DR7) covering redshift $0<z<0.4$ to measure Hubble parameters. Using a full spectrum fitting package UlySS, these spectra are reduced with single stellar population (SSP) models and optimal age information of our selected sample are derived. With the decreasing age-redshift relation, four new observational $H(z)$ data (OHD) points are obtained, which are $H(z)=69.0\pm19.6$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ at $z=0.07$, $H(z)=68.6\pm26.2$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ at $z=0.12$, $H(z)$=$72.9\pm29.6$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ at $z=0.2$ and $H(z)$=$88.8\pm36.6$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ at $z=0.28$, respectively. Combined with other 21 available OHD data points, a performance of constraint on both flat and non-flat $Λ$CDM model is presented.

Femtosecond pulse generation from a Topological Insulator mode-locked fiber laser

We reported on the generation of femtosecond pulse in an anomalous-dispersion fiber ring laser by using a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based Topological Insulator (TI), Bi2Se3 saturable absorber (SA). The PVA-TI composite has a low saturable optical intensity of 12 MW/cm2 and a modulation depth of ~3.9%. By incorporating the fabricated PVA-TISA into a fiber laser, mode-locking operation could be achieved at a low pump threshold of 25 mW. After an optimization of the cavity parameters, optical pulse with ~660 fs centered at 1557.5 nm wavelength had been generated. The experimental results demonstrate that the PVA could be an excellent host material for fabricating high-performance TISA, and also indicate that the filmy PVA-TISA is indeed a good candidate for ultrafast saturable absorption device.

Numerical simulations of the mutual effect among the superconducting constituents in a levitation system with translational symmetry

By the introduction of a generalized magnetic vector potential, which contains the contributions of both the magnetic and electric parts, and the use of the Ampere's law within the quasistatic approximation as the state equation, the partial differential equations for governing the electromagnetic properties of superconductors as well as the surrounding coolant were established and numerically discretized by resorting to the finite-element technique and finite-difference scheme, respectively, in the spatial and temporal domain. In conjunction with an analytic method to calculate the magnetic field generated by permanent magnet, we compiled a numerical tool for performing an intricate study of the mutual effect among the superconducting constituents in a superconducting levitation system with translational symmetry. Taking a superconducting unit with three constituents inside as a practice, we simulated the electromagnetic responses of this unit while moving in the nonuniform magnetic field generated by permanent magnet guideway and, identified the influences of the mutual effect on the levitation force as well as on the distributions of the magnetic flux density, the supercurrent density, and the levitation force density by comparing to an envisaged reference, one constituent was simulated with all the rest absent to remove the mutual effect. The insights attained by the present study, mostly being inaccessible from the experiments, are aimed to provide useful implications for the design of a superconducting levitation system for the transit and analogous purposes, which usually employ multiple superconductors to achieve the desired capability.

Superconducting Phases in Potassium-Intercalated Iron Selenides

The ubiquitous coexistence of majority insulating 245 phases and minority superconducting (SC) phases in AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Cs, Rb, Tl/Rb, Tl/K) formed by high-temperature routes makes pure SC phases highly desirable for studying the intrinsic properties of this SC family. Here we report that there are at least two pure SC phases, KxFe2Se2(NH3)y (x ~ 0.3 and 0.6), determined mainly by potassium concentration in the K-intercalated iron selenides formed via the liquid ammonia route. K0.3Fe2Se2(NH3)0.47 corresponds to the 44 K phase with lattice constant c = 15.56(1) angstroms and K0.6Fe2Se2(NH3)0.37 to the 30 K phase with c = 14.84(1) angstroms. With higher potassium doping, the 44 K phase can be converted into the 30 K phase. NH3 has little, if any, effect on superconductivity. Thus, the conclusions should apply to both K0.3Fe2Se2 and K0.6Fe2Se2 SC phases. K0.3Fe2Se2(NH3)0.47 and K0.6Fe2Se2(NH3)0.37 stand out among known superconductors as their structures are stable only at particular potassium doping levels, and hence the variation of Tc with doping is not dome-like.

Holographic Storage of Biphoton Entanglement

Coherent and reversible storage of multi-photon entanglement with a multimode quantum memory is essential for scalable all-optical quantum information processing. Although single photon has been successfully stored in different quantum systems, storage of multi-photon entanglement remains challenging because of the critical requirement for coherent control of photonic entanglement source, multimode quantum memory, and quantum interface between them. Here we demonstrate a coherent and reversible storage of biphoton Bell-type entanglement with a holographic multimode atomic-ensemble-based quantum memory. The retrieved biphoton entanglement violates Bell's inequality for 1 microsecond storage time and a memory-process fidelity of 98% is demonstrated by quantum state tomography.

Large nonlinear Kerr effect in graphene

Under strong laser illumination, few-layer graphene exhibits both a transmittance increase due to saturable absorption and a nonlinear phase shift. Here, we unambiguously distinguish these two nonlinear optical effects and identify both real and imaginary parts of the complex nonlinear refractive index of graphene. We show that graphene possesses a giant nonlinear refractive index n2=10-7cm2W-1, almost nine orders of magnitude larger than bulk dielectrics. We find that the nonlinear refractive index decreases with increasing excitation flux but slower than the absorption. This suggests that graphene may be a very promising nonlinear medium, paving the way for graphene-based nonlinear photonics.
