Deep Image Synthesis from Intuitive User Input: A Review and Perspectives

In many applications of computer graphics, art and design, it is desirable for a user to provide intuitive non-image input, such as text, sketch, stroke, graph or layout, and have a computer system automatically generate photo-realistic images that adhere to the input content. While classic works that allow such automatic image content generation have followed a framework of image retrieval and composition, recent advances in deep generative models such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), variational autoencoders (VAEs), and flow-based methods have enabled more powerful and versatile image generation tasks. This paper reviews recent works for image synthesis given intuitive user input, covering advances in input versatility, image generation methodology, benchmark datasets, and evaluation metrics. This motivates new perspectives on input representation and interactivity, cross pollination between major image generation paradigms, and evaluation and comparison of generation methods.

DeepAID: Interpreting and Improving Deep Learning-based Anomaly Detection in Security Applications

Unsupervised Deep Learning (DL) techniques have been widely used in various security-related anomaly detection applications, owing to the great promise of being able to detect unforeseen threats and superior performance provided by Deep Neural Networks (DNN). However, the lack of interpretability creates key barriers to the adoption of DL models in practice. Unfortunately, existing interpretation approaches are proposed for supervised learning models and/or non-security domains, which are unadaptable for unsupervised DL models and fail to satisfy special requirements in security domains. In this paper, we propose DeepAID, a general framework aiming to (1) interpret DL-based anomaly detection systems in security domains, and (2) improve the practicality of these systems based on the interpretations. We first propose a novel interpretation method for unsupervised DNNs by formulating and solving well-designed optimization problems with special constraints for security domains. Then, we provide several applications based on our Interpreter as well as a model-based extension Distiller to improve security systems by solving domain-specific problems. We apply DeepAID over three types of security-related anomaly detection systems and extensively evaluate our Interpreter with representative prior works. Experimental results show that DeepAID can provide high-quality interpretations for unsupervised DL models while meeting the special requirements of security domains. We also provide several use cases to show that DeepAID can help security operators to understand model decisions, diagnose system mistakes, give feedback to models, and reduce false positives.

Covert Beamforming Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted IoT Networks

In this paper, we consider covert beamforming design for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted Internet of Things (IoT) networks, where Alice utilizes IRS to covertly transmit a message to Bob without being recognized by Willie. We investigate the joint beamformer design of Alice and IRS to maximize the covert rate of Bob when the knowledge about Willie's channel state information (WCSI) is perfect and imperfect at Alice, respectively. For the former case, we develop a covert beamformer under the perfect covert constraint by applying semidefinite relaxation. For the later case, the optimal decision threshold of Willie is derived, and we analyze the false alarm and the missed detection probabilities. Furthermore, we utilize the property of Kullback-Leibler divergence to develop the robust beamformer based on a relaxation, S-Lemma and alternate iteration approach. Finally, the numerical experiments evaluate the performance of the proposed covert beamformer design and robust beamformer design.

Micro/nanoliter droplet extraction by controlling acoustic vortex with miniwatt

Micro/nanoliter droplet is capable of achieving versatile applications with tiny volume and substantial surface energy, which is a big plus over bulk liquid. Yet, the contradiction of elaborate manipulation and enough power is still a challenge. Here, we unleash the potential of our miniwatt aspirators pumping up liquid and creating droplets with the help of acoustic vortex beams, inspired by the power mechanism that spirals are significant for most mollusks that live in water. These droplet aspirators produce very large interface deformations by small radiation pressures with orbit angular momentum from spiral-electrode transducers. The precisely contactless manipulation of physical, chemical and biological objects at micrometric down to nanometric scales, promises tremendous development in fields as diverse as microrobotics, nanoreactors, or nanoassemblies.

SearchGCN: Powering Embedding Retrieval by Graph Convolution Networks for E-Commerce Search

Graph convolution networks (GCN), which recently becomes new state-of-the-art method for graph node classification, recommendation and other applications, has not been successfully applied to industrial-scale search engine yet. In this proposal, we introduce our approach, namely SearchGCN, for embedding-based candidate retrieval in one of the largest e-commerce search engine in the world. Empirical studies demonstrate that SearchGCN learns better embedding representations than existing methods, especially for long tail queries and items. Thus, SearchGCN has been deployed into JD.com's search production since July 2020.

Query Rewriting via Cycle-Consistent Translation for E-Commerce Search

Nowadays e-commerce search has become an integral part of many people's shopping routines. One critical challenge in today's e-commerce search is the semantic matching problem where the relevant items may not contain the exact terms in the user query. In this paper, we propose a novel deep neural network based approach to query rewriting, in order to tackle this problem. Specifically, we formulate query rewriting into a cyclic machine translation problem to leverage abundant click log data. Then we introduce a novel cyclic consistent training algorithm in conjunction with state-of-the-art machine translation models to achieve the optimal performance in terms of query rewriting accuracy. In order to make it practical in industrial scenarios, we optimize the syntax tree construction to reduce computational cost and online serving latency. Offline experiments show that the proposed method is able to rewrite hard user queries into more standard queries that are more appropriate for the inverted index to retrieve. Comparing with human curated rule-based method, the proposed model significantly improves query rewriting diversity while maintaining good relevancy. Online A/B experiments show that it improves core e-commerce business metrics significantly. Since the summer of 2020, the proposed model has been launched into our search engine production, serving hundreds of millions of users.

Joint Learning of Deep Retrieval Model and Product Quantization based Embedding Index

Embedding index that enables fast approximate nearest neighbor(ANN) search, serves as an indispensable component for state-of-the-art deep retrieval systems. Traditional approaches, often separating the two steps of embedding learning and index building, incur additional indexing time and decayed retrieval accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel method called Poeem, which stands for product quantization based embedding index jointly trained with deep retrieval model, to unify the two separate steps within an end-to-end training, by utilizing a few techniques including the gradient straight-through estimator, warm start strategy, optimal space decomposition and Givens rotation. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method not only improves retrieval accuracy significantly but also reduces the indexing time to almost none. We have open sourced our approach for the sake of comparison and reproducibility.

Enhancement of the superconductivity and quantum metallic state in the thin film of superconducting Kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$

Recently V-based Kagome metal attracted intense attention due to the emergence of superconductivity in the low temperature. Here we report the fabrication and physical investigations of the high quality single-crystalline thin films of the Kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$. For the sample with the thickness of about 15 nm, the temperature dependent resistance reveals a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type behavior, indicating the presence of two-dimensional superconductivity. Compared with the bulk sample, the onset transition temperature $T^{onset}_{c}$ and the out-of-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}$ are enhanced by 15\% and more than 10 times respectively. Moreover, the zero-resistance state is destroyed by a magnetic field as low as 50 Oe. Meanwhile, the temperature-independent resistance is observed in a wide field region, which is the hallmark of quantum metallic state. Our results provide evidences for the existence of unconventional superconductivity in this material.

How Does COVID-19 impact Students with Disabilities/Health Concerns?

The impact of COVID-19 on students has been enormous, with an increase in worries about fiscal and physical health, a rapid shift to online learning, and increased isolation. In addition to these changes, students with disabilities/health concerns may face accessibility problems with online learning or communication tools, and their stress may be compounded by additional risks such as financial stress or pre-existing conditions. To our knowledge, no one has looked specifically at the impact of COVID-19 on students with disabilities/health concerns. In this paper, we present data from a survey of 147 students with and without disabilities collected in late March to early April of 2020 to assess the impact of COVID-19 on these students' education and mental health. Our findings show that students with disabilities/health concerns were more concerned about classes going online than their peers without disabilities. In addition, students with disabilities/health concerns also reported that they have experienced more COVID-19 related adversities compared to their peers without disabilities/health concerns. We argue that students with disabilities/health concerns in higher education need confidence in the accessibility of the online learning tools that are becoming increasingly prevalent in higher education not only because of COVID-19 but also more generally. In addition, educational technologies will be more accessible if they consider the learning context, and are designed to provide a supportive, calm, and connecting learning environment.

PanGu-$α$: Large-scale Autoregressive Pretrained Chinese Language Models with Auto-parallel Computation

Large-scale Pretrained Language Models (PLMs) have become the new paradigm for Natural Language Processing (NLP). PLMs with hundreds of billions parameters such as GPT-3 have demonstrated strong performances on natural language understanding and generation with \textit{few-shot in-context} learning. In this work, we present our practice on training large-scale autoregressive language models named PanGu-$α$, with up to 200 billion parameters. PanGu-$α$ is developed under the MindSpore and trained on a cluster of 2048 Ascend 910 AI processors. The training parallelism strategy is implemented based on MindSpore Auto-parallel, which composes five parallelism dimensions to scale the training task to 2048 processors efficiently, including data parallelism, op-level model parallelism, pipeline model parallelism, optimizer model parallelism and rematerialization. To enhance the generalization ability of PanGu-$α$, we collect 1.1TB high-quality Chinese data from a wide range of domains to pretrain the model. We empirically test the generation ability of PanGu-$α$ in various scenarios including text summarization, question answering, dialogue generation, etc. Moreover, we investigate the effect of model scales on the few-shot performances across a broad range of Chinese NLP tasks. The experimental results demonstrate the superior capabilities of PanGu-$α$ in performing various tasks under few-shot or zero-shot settings.

Learning Hamiltonian dynamics by reservoir computer

Reconstructing the KAM dynamics diagram of Hamiltonian system from the time series of a limited number of parameters is an outstanding question in nonlinear science, especially when the Hamiltonian governing the system dynamics are unknown. Here, we demonstrate that this question can be addressed by the machine learning approach knowing as reservoir computer (RC). Specifically, we show that without prior knowledge about the Hamilton's equations of motion, the trained RC is able to not only predict the short-term evolution of the system state, but also replicate the long-term ergodic properties of the system dynamics. Furthermore, by the architecture of parameter-aware RC, we also show that the RC trained by the time series acquired at a handful parameters is able to reconstruct the entire KAM dynamics diagram with a high precision by tuning a control parameter externally. The feasibility and efficiency of the learning techniques are demonstrated in two classical nonlinear Hamiltonian systems, namely the double-pendulum oscillator and the standard map. Our study indicates that, as a complex dynamical system, RC is able to learn from data the Hamiltonian.

Transfer training from smaller language model

Large language models have led to state-of-the-art accuracies across a range of tasks. However, training large language model needs massive computing resource, as more and more open source pre-training models are available, it is worthy to study how to take full advantage of available model. We find a method to save training time and resource cost by changing the small well-trained model to large model. We initialize a larger target model from a smaller source model by copy weight values from source model and padding with zeros or small initialization values on it to make the source and target model have approximate outputs, which is valid due to block matrix multiplication and residual connection in transformer structure. We test the target model on several data sets and find it is still comparable with the source model. When we continue training the target model, the training loss can start from a smaller value.

Revisiting Hierarchical Approach for Persistent Long-Term Video Prediction

Learning to predict the long-term future of video frames is notoriously challenging due to inherent ambiguities in the distant future and dramatic amplifications of prediction error through time. Despite the recent advances in the literature, existing approaches are limited to moderately short-term prediction (less than a few seconds), while extrapolating it to a longer future quickly leads to destruction in structure and content. In this work, we revisit hierarchical models in video prediction. Our method predicts future frames by first estimating a sequence of semantic structures and subsequently translating the structures to pixels by video-to-video translation. Despite the simplicity, we show that modeling structures and their dynamics in the discrete semantic structure space with a stochastic recurrent estimator leads to surprisingly successful long-term prediction. We evaluate our method on three challenging datasets involving car driving and human dancing, and demonstrate that it can generate complicated scene structures and motions over a very long time horizon (i.e., thousands frames), setting a new standard of video prediction with orders of magnitude longer prediction time than existing approaches. ERNIE-Gram: Pre-Training with Explicitly N-Gram Masked Language Modeling for Natural Language Understanding

Coarse-grained linguistic information, such as named entities or phrases, facilitates adequately representation learning in pre-training. Previous works mainly focus on extending the objective of BERT's Masked Language Modeling (MLM) from masking individual tokens to contiguous sequences of n tokens. We argue that such contiguously masking method neglects to model the intra-dependencies and inter-relation of coarse-grained linguistic information. As an alternative, we propose ERNIE-Gram, an explicitly n-gram masking method to enhance the integration of coarse-grained information into pre-training. In ERNIE-Gram, n-grams are masked and predicted directly using explicit n-gram identities rather than contiguous sequences of n tokens. Furthermore, ERNIE-Gram employs a generator model to sample plausible n-gram identities as optional n-gram masks and predict them in both coarse-grained and fine-grained manners to enable comprehensive n-gram prediction and relation modeling. We pre-train ERNIE-Gram on English and Chinese text corpora and fine-tune on 19 downstream tasks. Experimental results show that ERNIE-Gram outperforms previous pre-training models like XLNet and RoBERTa by a large margin, and achieves comparable results with state-of-the-art methods. The source codes and pre-trained models have been released at https://github.com/PaddlePaddle/ERNIE.

Towards On-Demand Heralded Single-Photon Sources via Photon Blockade

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a laser pumped optical nonlinear medium can produce heralded single photons with a high purity but a very low yield. Improving the yield by increasing the pump power in SPDC inevitably reduces the purity due to excitation of multi-photon events. We propose a scheme to overcome this purity-yield trade-off by suppressing multi-photon events in a cavity-enhanced SPDC via the photon blockade effect. By introducing a strong photon-photon interaction into the intracavity medium and increasing the pump power, we can improve the available single-photon yield to larger than $90\%$, while maintaining a high purity of $99\%$, towards on-demand generation of single photons through the SPDC process. Our quasi-on-demand SPDC sources may boost single-photon-based quantum information technology.

PseudoSeg: Designing Pseudo Labels for Semantic Segmentation

Recent advances in semi-supervised learning (SSL) demonstrate that a combination of consistency regularization and pseudo-labeling can effectively improve image classification accuracy in the low-data regime. Compared to classification, semantic segmentation tasks require much more intensive labeling costs. Thus, these tasks greatly benefit from data-efficient training methods. However, structured outputs in segmentation render particular difficulties (e.g., designing pseudo-labeling and augmentation) to apply existing SSL strategies. To address this problem, we present a simple and novel re-design of pseudo-labeling to generate well-calibrated structured pseudo labels for training with unlabeled or weakly-labeled data. Our proposed pseudo-labeling strategy is network structure agnostic to apply in a one-stage consistency training framework. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed pseudo-labeling strategy in both low-data and high-data regimes. Extensive experiments have validated that pseudo labels generated from wisely fusing diverse sources and strong data augmentation are crucial to consistency training for segmentation. The source code is available at https://github.com/googleinterns/wss.

Data-driven modelling of scalable spinodoid structures for energy absorption

The project aims to explore a novel way to design and produce cellular materials with good energy absorption and recoverability properties. Spinodoid structures offer an alternative to engineering structures such as honeycombs and foam with scalability ensuring microscale benefits are reaped on a larger scale. Various materials and topologies have been utilised for numerical modeling and prototyping through additive manufacturing. Each design was evaluated using finite element modelling. Initial results from numerical models show anisotropic structures achieving high energy absorption efficiency. Through data-driven optimisation, results show a peak energy absorption value of 5.34 $MJ/m^{3}$ for anisotropic columnar structure. A physics-informed biased grid-search optimisation is faster due to parameters being explored in parallel. To validate the numerical model, compressive tests on various prototypes were conducted.
