Distributed Attacks over Federated Reinforcement Learning-enabled Cell Sleep Control

Federated learning (FL) is particularly useful in wireless networks due to its distributed implementation and privacy-preserving features. However, as a distributed learning system, FL can be vulnerable to malicious attacks from both internal and external sources. Our work aims to investigate the attack models in a FL-enabled wireless networks. Specifically, we consider a cell sleep control scenario, and apply federated reinforcement learning to improve energy-efficiency. We design three attacks, namely free rider attacks, Byzantine data poisoning attacks and backdoor attacks. The simulation results show that the designed attacks can degrade the network performance and lead to lower energy-efficiency. Moreover, we also explore possible ways to mitigate the above attacks. We design a defense model called refined-Krum to defend against attacks by enabling a secure aggregation on the global server. The proposed refined- Krum scheme outperforms the existing Krum scheme and can effectively prevent wireless networks from malicious attacks, improving the system energy-efficiency performance.

WirePlanner: Fast, Secure and Cost-Efficient Route Configuration for SD-WAN

As enterprises increasingly migrate their applications to the cloud, the demand for secure and cost-effective Wide Area Networking (WAN) solutions for data transmission between branches and data centers grows. Among these solutions, Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) has emerged as a promising approach. However, existing SD-WAN implementations largely rely on IPSec tunnels for data encryption between edge routers, resulting in drawbacks such as extended setup times and limited throughput. Additionally, the SD-WAN control plane rarely takes both latency and monetary cost into consideration when determining routes between nodes, resulting in unsatisfactory Quality of Service (QoS). We propose WirePlanner, an SD-WAN solution that employs a novel algorithm for path discovery, optimizing both latency and cost, and configures WireGuard tunnels for secure and efficient data transmission. WirePlanner considers two payment methods: Pay-As-You-Go, where users pay for a fixed amount of bandwidth over a certain duration, and Pay-For-Data-Transfer, where users pay for the volume of transmitted data. Given an underlay topology of edge routers and a user-defined budget constraint, WirePlanner identifies a path between nodes that minimizes latency and remains within the budget, while utilizing WireGuard for secure data transmission.

Accurate battery lifetime prediction across diverse aging conditions with deep learning

Accurately predicting the lifetime of battery cells in early cycles holds tremendous value for battery research and development as well as numerous downstream applications. This task is rather challenging because diverse conditions, such as electrode materials, operating conditions, and working environments, collectively determine complex capacity-degradation behaviors. However, current prediction methods are developed and validated under limited aging conditions, resulting in questionable adaptability to varied aging conditions and an inability to fully benefit from historical data collected under different conditions. Here we introduce a universal deep learning approach that is capable of accommodating various aging conditions and facilitating effective learning under low-resource conditions by leveraging data from rich conditions. Our key finding is that incorporating inter-cell feature differences, rather than solely considering single-cell characteristics, significantly increases the accuracy of battery lifetime prediction and its cross-condition robustness. Accordingly, we develop a holistic learning framework accommodating both single-cell and inter-cell modeling. A comprehensive benchmark is built for evaluation, encompassing 401 battery cells utilizing 5 prevalent electrode materials across 168 cycling conditions. We demonstrate remarkable capabilities in learning across diverse aging conditions, exclusively achieving 10% prediction error using the first 100 cycles, and in facilitating low-resource learning, almost halving the error of single-cell modeling in many cases. More broadly, by breaking the learning boundaries among different aging conditions, our approach could significantly accelerate the development and optimization of lithium-ion batteries.

Steering Prototypes with Prompt-tuning for Rehearsal-free Continual Learning

In the context of continual learning, prototypes-as representative class embeddings-offer advantages in memory conservation and the mitigation of catastrophic forgetting. However, challenges related to semantic drift and prototype interference persist. In this study, we introduce the Contrastive Prototypical Prompt (CPP) approach. Through task-specific prompt-tuning, underpinned by a contrastive learning objective, we effectively address both aforementioned challenges. Our evaluations on four challenging class-incremental benchmarks reveal that CPP achieves a significant 4% to 6% improvement over state-of-the-art methods. Importantly, CPP operates without a rehearsal buffer and narrows the performance divergence between continual and offline joint-learning, suggesting an innovative scheme for Transformer-based continual learning systems.

Topological spin-orbit-coupled fermions beyond rotating wave approximation

The realization of spin-orbit-coupled ultracold gases has driven a wide range of researches and is typically based on the rotating wave approximation (RWA). By neglecting the counter-rotating terms, RWA characterizes a single near-resonant spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a two-level system. Here, we propose and experimentally realize a new scheme for achieving a pair of two-dimensional (2D) SO couplings for ultracold fermions beyond RWA. This work not only realizes the first anomalous Floquet topological Fermi gas beyond RWA, but also significantly improves the lifetime of the 2D-SO-coupled Fermi gas. Based on pump-probe quench measurements, we observe a deterministic phase relation between two sets of SO couplings, which is characteristic for our beyond-RWA scheme and enables the two SO couplings to be simultaneously tuned to the optimum 2D configurations. We observe intriguing band topology by measuring two-ring band-inversion surfaces, quantitatively consistent with a Floquet topological Fermi gas in the regime of high Chern numbers. Our study can open an avenue to explore exotic SO physics and anomalous topological states based on long-lived SO-coupled ultracold fermions.

Diversify Your Vision Datasets with Automatic Diffusion-Based Augmentation

Many fine-grained classification tasks, like rare animal identification, have limited training data and consequently classifiers trained on these datasets often fail to generalize to variations in the domain like changes in weather or location. As such, we explore how natural language descriptions of the domains seen in training data can be used with large vision models trained on diverse pretraining datasets to generate useful variations of the training data. We introduce ALIA (Automated Language-guided Image Augmentation), a method which utilizes large vision and language models to automatically generate natural language descriptions of a dataset's domains and augment the training data via language-guided image editing. To maintain data integrity, a model trained on the original dataset filters out minimal image edits and those which corrupt class-relevant information. The resulting dataset is visually consistent with the original training data and offers significantly enhanced diversity. We show that ALIA is able to surpasses traditional data augmentation and text-to-image generated data on fine-grained classification tasks, including cases of domain generalization and contextual bias. Uncertainty Quantification of Bandgaps in Acoustic Metamaterials with Stochastic Geometric Defects and Material Properties

This paper studies the utility of techniques within uncertainty quantification, namely spectral projection and polynomial chaos expansion, in reducing sampling needs for characterizing acoustic metamaterial dispersion band responses given stochastic material properties and geometric defects. A novel method of encoding geometric defects in an interpretable, resolution independent is showcased in the formation of input space probability distributions. Orders of magnitude sampling reductions down to $\sim10^0$ and $\sim10^1$ are achieved in the 1D and 7D input space scenarios respectively while maintaining accurate output space probability distributions through combining Monte Carlo, quadrature rule, and sparse grid sampling with surrogate model fitting.

StoryBench: A Multifaceted Benchmark for Continuous Story Visualization

Generating video stories from text prompts is a complex task. In addition to having high visual quality, videos need to realistically adhere to a sequence of text prompts whilst being consistent throughout the frames. Creating a benchmark for video generation requires data annotated over time, which contrasts with the single caption used often in video datasets. To fill this gap, we collect comprehensive human annotations on three existing datasets, and introduce StoryBench: a new, challenging multi-task benchmark to reliably evaluate forthcoming text-to-video models. Our benchmark includes three video generation tasks of increasing difficulty: action execution, where the next action must be generated starting from a conditioning video; story continuation, where a sequence of actions must be executed starting from a conditioning video; and story generation, where a video must be generated from only text prompts. We evaluate small yet strong text-to-video baselines, and show the benefits of training on story-like data algorithmically generated from existing video captions. Finally, we establish guidelines for human evaluation of video stories, and reaffirm the need of better automatic metrics for video generation. StoryBench aims at encouraging future research efforts in this exciting new area.

Pointwise equidistribution for almost smooth functions with an error rate and Weighted Lévy-Khintchin theorem

The purpose of this article is twofold: to prove a pointwise equidistribution theorem with an error rate for almost smooth functions, which strengthens the main result of Kleinbock, Shi and Weiss (2017); and to obtain a Lévy-Khintchin theorem for weighted best approximations, which extends the main theorem of Cheung and Chevallier (2019). To do so, we employ techniques from homogeneous dynamics and the methods developed in the work of Cheung-Chevallier (2019) and Shapira-Weiss (2022).

Leveraging Unpaired Data for Vision-Language Generative Models via Cycle Consistency

Current vision-language generative models rely on expansive corpora of paired image-text data to attain optimal performance and generalization capabilities. However, automatically collecting such data (e.g. via large-scale web scraping) leads to low quality and poor image-text correlation, while human annotation is more accurate but requires significant manual effort and expense. We introduce $\textbf{ITIT}$ ($\textbf{I}$n$\textbf{T}$egrating $\textbf{I}$mage $\textbf{T}$ext): an innovative training paradigm grounded in the concept of cycle consistency which allows vision-language training on unpaired image and text data. ITIT is comprised of a joint image-text encoder with disjoint image and text decoders that enable bidirectional image-to-text and text-to-image generation in a single framework. During training, ITIT leverages a small set of paired image-text data to ensure its output matches the input reasonably well in both directions. Simultaneously, the model is also trained on much larger datasets containing only images or texts. This is achieved by enforcing cycle consistency between the original unpaired samples and the cycle-generated counterparts. For instance, it generates a caption for a given input image and then uses the caption to create an output image, and enforces similarity between the input and output images. Our experiments show that ITIT with unpaired datasets exhibits similar scaling behavior as using high-quality paired data. We demonstrate image generation and captioning performance on par with state-of-the-art text-to-image and image-to-text models with orders of magnitude fewer (only 3M) paired image-text data.

Predicting failure locations in model end-linked polymer networks

The fracture of end-linked polymer networks and gels has a significant impact on the performance of these versatile and widely used materials, and a molecular-level understanding of the fracture process is crucial for the design of new materials. Network analysis techniques, especially geodesic edge betweenness centrality (GEBC) have been proven effective in failure locations across various network materials. In this work, we employ a combination of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations and network analysis techniques to investigate the effectiveness of GEBC and polymer strand orientation in predicting failure locations in model end-linked polymer networks. We demonstrate that polymer strands with fewer topological defects in their local surroundings, higher GEBC values compared to the system average, and greater alignment to the deformation axis are more prone to breaking under the uniaxial tensile deformation. Our results can be used to further refine the description of the processes at play during the failure of polymer networks and provide valuable insights into the inverse design of network materials with desired fracture properties.

Differentiable Retrieval Augmentation via Generative Language Modeling for E-commerce Query Intent Classification

Retrieval augmentation, which enhances downstream models by a knowledge retriever and an external corpus instead of by merely increasing the number of model parameters, has been successfully applied to many natural language processing (NLP) tasks such as text classification, question answering and so on. However, existing methods that separately or asynchronously train the retriever and downstream model mainly due to the non-differentiability between the two parts, usually lead to degraded performance compared to end-to-end joint training. In this paper, we propose Differentiable Retrieval Augmentation via Generative lANguage modeling(Dragan), to address this problem by a novel differentiable reformulation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method on a challenging NLP task in e-commerce search, namely query intent classification. Both the experimental results and ablation study show that the proposed method significantly and reasonably improves the state-of-the-art baselines on both offline evaluation and online A/B test.

Chat2Brain: A Method for Mapping Open-Ended Semantic Queries to Brain Activation Maps

Over decades, neuroscience has accumulated a wealth of research results in the text modality that can be used to explore cognitive processes. Meta-analysis is a typical method that successfully establishes a link from text queries to brain activation maps using these research results, but it still relies on an ideal query environment. In practical applications, text queries used for meta-analyses may encounter issues such as semantic redundancy and ambiguity, resulting in an inaccurate mapping to brain images. On the other hand, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have shown great potential in tasks such as context understanding and reasoning, displaying a high degree of consistency with human natural language. Hence, LLMs could improve the connection between text modality and neuroscience, resolving existing challenges of meta-analyses. In this study, we propose a method called Chat2Brain that combines LLMs to basic text-2-image model, known as Text2Brain, to map open-ended semantic queries to brain activation maps in data-scarce and complex query environments. By utilizing the understanding and reasoning capabilities of LLMs, the performance of the mapping model is optimized by transferring text queries to semantic queries. We demonstrate that Chat2Brain can synthesize anatomically plausible neural activation patterns for more complex tasks of text queries.

FineDance: A Fine-grained Choreography Dataset for 3D Full Body Dance Generation

Generating full-body and multi-genre dance sequences from given music is a challenging task, due to the limitations of existing datasets and the inherent complexity of the fine-grained hand motion and dance genres. To address these problems, we propose FineDance, which contains 14.6 hours of music-dance paired data, with fine-grained hand motions, fine-grained genres (22 dance genres), and accurate posture. To the best of our knowledge, FineDance is the largest music-dance paired dataset with the most dance genres. Additionally, to address monotonous and unnatural hand movements existing in previous methods, we propose a full-body dance generation network, which utilizes the diverse generation capabilities of the diffusion model to solve monotonous problems, and use expert nets to solve unreal problems. To further enhance the genre-matching and long-term stability of generated dances, we propose a Genre&Coherent aware Retrieval Module. Besides, we propose a novel metric named Genre Matching Score to evaluate the genre-matching degree between dance and music. Quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate the quality of FineDance, and the state-of-the-art performance of FineNet. The FineDance Dataset and more qualitative samples can be found at our website.

A Framework for Designing Fair Ubiquitous Computing Systems

Over the past few decades, ubiquitous sensors and systems have been an integral part of humans' everyday life. They augment human capabilities and provide personalized experiences across diverse contexts such as healthcare, education, and transportation. However, the widespread adoption of ubiquitous computing has also brought forth concerns regarding fairness and equitable treatment. As these systems can make automated decisions that impact individuals, it is essential to ensure that they do not perpetuate biases or discriminate against specific groups. While fairness in ubiquitous computing has been an acknowledged concern since the 1990s, it remains understudied within the field. To bridge this gap, we propose a framework that incorporates fairness considerations into system design, including prioritizing stakeholder perspectives, inclusive data collection, fairness-aware algorithms, appropriate evaluation criteria, enhancing human engagement while addressing privacy concerns, and interactive improvement and regular monitoring. Our framework aims to guide the development of fair and unbiased ubiquitous computing systems, ensuring equal treatment and positive societal impact.

NEON: Living Needs Prediction System in Meituan

Living needs refer to the various needs in human's daily lives for survival and well-being, including food, housing, entertainment, etc. On life service platforms that connect users to service providers, such as Meituan, the problem of living needs prediction is fundamental as it helps understand users and boost various downstream applications such as personalized recommendation. However, the problem has not been well explored and is faced with two critical challenges. First, the needs are naturally connected to specific locations and times, suffering from complex impacts from the spatiotemporal context. Second, there is a significant gap between users' actual living needs and their historical records on the platform. To address these two challenges, we design a system of living NEeds predictiON named NEON, consisting of three phases: feature mining, feature fusion, and multi-task prediction. In the feature mining phase, we carefully extract individual-level user features for spatiotemporal modeling, and aggregated-level behavioral features for enriching data, which serve as the basis for addressing two challenges, respectively. Further, in the feature fusion phase, we propose a neural network that effectively fuses two parts of features into the user representation. Moreover, we design a multi-task prediction phase, where the auxiliary task of needs-meeting way prediction can enhance the modeling of spatiotemporal context. Extensive offline evaluations verify that our NEON system can effectively predict users' living needs. Furthermore, we deploy NEON into Meituan's algorithm engine and evaluate how it enhances the three downstream prediction applications, via large-scale online A/B testing.

SVDiff: Compact Parameter Space for Diffusion Fine-Tuning

Diffusion models have achieved remarkable success in text-to-image generation, enabling the creation of high-quality images from text prompts or other modalities. However, existing methods for customizing these models are limited by handling multiple personalized subjects and the risk of overfitting. Moreover, their large number of parameters is inefficient for model storage. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address these limitations in existing text-to-image diffusion models for personalization. Our method involves fine-tuning the singular values of the weight matrices, leading to a compact and efficient parameter space that reduces the risk of overfitting and language drifting. We also propose a Cut-Mix-Unmix data-augmentation technique to enhance the quality of multi-subject image generation and a simple text-based image editing framework. Our proposed SVDiff method has a significantly smaller model size compared to existing methods (approximately 2,200 times fewer parameters compared with vanilla DreamBooth), making it more practical for real-world applications.
