Random Sequential Adsorption on Imprecise Lattice

We report a surprising result, established by numerical simulations and analytical arguments for a one-dimensional lattice model of random sequential adsorption, that even an arbitrarily small imprecision in the lattice-site localization changes the convergence to jamming from fast, exponential, to slow, power-law, with, for some parameter values, a discontinuous jump in the jamming coverage value. This finding has implications for irreversible deposition on patterned substrates with pre-made landing sites for particle attachment. We also consider a general problem of the particle (depositing object) size not an exact multiple of the lattice spacing, and the lattice sites themselves imprecise, broadened into allowed-deposition intervals. Regions of exponential vs. power-law convergence to jamming are identified, and certain conclusions regarding the jamming coverage are argued for analytically and confirmed numerically.

Exciton Brightening in Monolayer Phosphorene via Dimensionality Modification

Two-dimensional (2D) monolayer phosphorene, a 2D system with quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) excitons, provides a unique 2D platform for investigating the dynamics of excitons in reduced dimensions and fundamental many-body interactions. However, on the other hand, the quasi-1D excitonic nature can limit the luminescence quantum yield significantly. Here, we report exciton brightening in monolayer phosphorene achieved via the dimensionality modification of excitons from quasi-1D to zero-dimensional (0D), through the transference of monolayer phosphorene samples onto defect-rich oxide substrate deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The resultant interfacial luminescent local states lead to exciton localization and trigger efficient photon emissions at a new wavelength of ~920 nm. The luminescence quantum yield of 0D-like localized excitons is measured to be at least 33.6 times larger than that of intrinsic quasi-1D free excitons in monolayer phosphorene. This is primarily due to the reduction of non-radiative decay rate and the possibly enhanced radiative recombination probability. Owing to the large trapping energy, this new photon emission from the localized excitons in monolayer phosphorene can be observed at elevated temperature, which contrasts markedly with defect-induced photon emission from transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor monolayers that can only be observed at cryogenic temperatures. Our findings introduce new avenues for the development of novel photonic devices based on monolayer phosphorene, such as near-infrared lighting devices that are operable at elevated temperature. More importantly, 2D phosphorene with quasi-1D free excitons and 0D-like localized excitons provides a unique platform to investigate the fundamental phenomena in the ideal 2D-1D-0D hybrid system.

Drag-Tracking Guidance for Entry Vehicles Without Drag Rate Measurement

A robust entry guidance law without drag rate measurement is designed for drag-tracking in this paper. The bank angle is regarded as the control variable. First, a state feedback guidance law (bank angle magnitude) that requires the drag and its rate as feedback information is designed to make the drag-tracking error be input-to-state stable (ISS) with respect to uncertainties. Then a high gain observer is utilized to estimate the drag rate which is difficult for a vehicle to measure accurately in practice. Stability analysis as well as simulation results show the efficiency of the presented approach.

Three-Dimensional Integrated Guidance and Control Based on Small-Gain Theorem

A three-dimensional (3D) integrated guidance and control (IGC) design approach is proposed by using small-gain theorem in this paper. The 3D IGC model is formulated by combining nonlinear pursuer dynamics with the nonlinear dynamics describing pursuitevasion motion. Small-gain theorem and ISS theory are iteratively utilized to design desired attack angle, sideslip angle and attitude angular rates (virtual controls), and eventually an IGC law is proposed. Theoretical analysis shows that the IGC approach can make the LOS rate converge into a small neighborhood of zero, and the stability of the overall system can be guaranteed as well.

Temporal statistical analysis on human article creation patterns

Inspired by previous works on human dynamics, we collect the temporal statistics of the article creation by three Western scientists and an Eastern writer. We investigate the distributions of the time intervals between the creations of every two consecutive articles. All four time distributions are found to be deviate from the Poisson statistics, and show an approximate power-law distribution. The power-law exponents are different with respect to individual, indicating that there is no universally shared article creation pattern.

Novel phase transition in collective motion with appearance of abnormal agents

We introduce a novel type of abnormal agents that proceed in the opposite direction of that defined for the normal agents. A new order parameter, $y$, is introduced to describe the characteristic of the system. Many interesting phenomenons emerge as the number of abnormal agents number shifts, e.g., the system may transform into a new phase (from $y\sim 1$ to $y\sim -1$) suddenly with abnormal agents getting denser, or stay disordered forever. A variety of other properties like size effect, agent speed and sight radii that have impacts on the new collective dynamics are also studied in detail. We suggest that our model or its modified versions can be applied to explain a variety of phenomenons with multiple kinds of particles interacting with each other and shape the system dynamics.
