Embedding Compression via Spherical Coordinates

We present an $ε$-bounded compression method for unit-norm embeddings that achieves 1.5$\times$ compression, 25% better than the best prior lossless method. The method exploits that spherical coordinates of high-dimensional unit vectors concentrate around $π/2$, causing IEEE 754 exponents to collapse to a single value and high-order mantissa bits to become predictable, enabling entropy coding of both. Reconstruction error is bounded by float32 machine epsilon ($1.19 \times 10^{-7}$), making reconstructed values indistinguishable from originals at float32 precision. Evaluation across 26 configurations spanning text, image, and multi-vector embeddings confirms consistent compression improvement with zero measurable retrieval degradation on BEIR benchmarks.

Cemented fibers as a testbed for distributed acoustic sensing (DAS)

A rigid connection between the optical fiber and the rock makes amplitudes of 'fiber strain' measured with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) equal to 'rock strain'. We demonstrate this by running four interrogator units (IU) on a DAS testbed with single-fiber patch cables being cemented into a groove in the concrete floor of Black Forest Observatory (BFO). The recorded signals are compared with the recordings of a calibrated Invar wire strain meter array that has been continuously in operation for the last decades. This way we measure 'strain transfer rate' (ratio of 'fiber strain' over 'rock strain') at frequencies below 0.2 Hz. Waveform similarity for strong earthquake signals is high with typical values of the normalized correlation coefficient greater than 0.95. The 'strain transfer rate' is close to 1 for all four IUs, while it was significantly less in a previous study with DAS cables unreeled on the floor and loaded down by sand and sandbags, only. At frequencies up to 14 Hz we make an intercomparison of IUs, showing no significant variation with frequency. The scatter of 'strain transfer rate' in between channels which are spatially near to each other in the same fiber route is about $\pm$10 % in most cases. The variation of median values in between different IUs and earthquakes is less than 5 %. By subtracting the common mode laser noise, which is coherent along the fiber route, we lower the background signal level to an rms-amplitude of 100 pstrain at 0.1 Hz and 5 pstrain at 1 Hz in a bandwidth of 1/6 decade for the best cases. This allows the detection of the marine microseisms during times of moderate amplitude level.

PIRA-Bench: A Transition from Reactive GUI Agents to GUI-based Proactive Intent Recommendation Agents

Current Graphical User Interface (GUI) agents operate primarily under a reactive paradigm: a user must provide an explicit instruction for the agent to execute a task. However, an intelligent AI assistant should be proactive, which is capable of anticipating user intentions directly from continuous visual inputs, such as mobile or desktop screenshots, and offering timely recommendations without explicit user prompting. Transitioning to this proactive paradigm presents significant challenges. Real-world screen activity is rarely linear; it consists of long-horizon trajectories fraught with noisy browsing, meaningless actions, and multithreaded task-switching. To address this gap, we introduce PIRA-Bench (Proactive Intent Recommendation Agent Benchmark), a novel benchmark for evaluating multimodal large language models (MLLMs) on continuous, weakly-supervised visual inputs. Unlike reactive datasets, PIRA-Bench features complex trajectories with multiple interleaved intents and noisy segments with various user profile contexts, challenging agents to detect actionable events while fitting to user preferences. Furthermore, we propose the PIRF baseline, a memory-aware, state-tracking framework that empowers general MLLMs to manage multiple task threads and handle misleading visual inputs. PIRA-Bench serves as an initial step toward robust and proactive GUI-based personal assistants.

Embedding Inversion via Conditional Masked Diffusion Language Models

We frame embedding inversion as conditional masked diffusion, recovering all tokens in parallel through iterative denoising rather than sequential autoregressive generation. A masked diffusion language model is conditioned on the target embedding via adaptive layer normalization, requiring only 8 forward passes with no access to the target encoder at inference time. On 32-token sequences across three embedding models, the method achieves token recovery through parallel denoising without requiring encoder access, iterative correction, or architecture-specific alignment. UI-Mem: Self-Evolving Experience Memory for Online Reinforcement Learning in Mobile GUI Agents

Online Reinforcement Learning (RL) offers a promising paradigm for enhancing GUI agents through direct environment interaction. However, its effectiveness is severely hindered by inefficient credit assignment in long-horizon tasks and repetitive errors across tasks due to the lack of experience transfer. To address these challenges, we propose UI-Mem, a novel framework that enhances GUI online RL with a Hierarchical Experience Memory. Unlike traditional replay buffers, our memory accumulates structured knowledge, including high-level workflows, subtask skills, and failure patterns. These experiences are stored as parameterized templates that enable cross-task and cross-application transfer. To effectively integrate memory guidance into online RL, we introduce Stratified Group Sampling, which injects varying levels of guidance across trajectories within each rollout group to maintain outcome diversity, driving the unguided policy toward internalizing guided behaviors. Furthermore, a Self-Evolving Loop continuously abstracts novel strategies and errors to keep the memory aligned with the agent's evolving policy. Experiments on online GUI benchmarks demonstrate that UI-Mem significantly outperforms traditional RL baselines and static reuse strategies, with strong generalization to unseen applications. UAV-Enabled Short-Packet Communication via Fluid Antenna Systems

This paper develops a framework for analyzing UAV-enabled short-packet communication, leveraging fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted relaying networks. Operating in the short-packet regime and focusing on challenging urban environments, we derive novel, closed-form expressions for the block error rate (BLER). This is achieved by modeling the spatially correlated Nakagami-$m$ fading link via a tractable eigenvalue-based approach. A high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic analysis is also presented, revealing the system's fundamental diversity order. Building on this analysis, we formulate a novel energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem that, unlike idealized models, uniquely incorporates the non-trivial time and energy overheads of FAS port selection. An efficient hierarchical algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize key system parameters. Numerical results validate our analysis, demonstrating that while FAS provides substantial power gains, the operational overhead creates a critical trade-off. This trade-off dictates an optimal number of FAS ports and a non-trivial optimal UAV deployment altitude, governed by the balance between blockage and path loss. This work provides key insights for FAS-aided UAV communications.

Mitigating the Safety Alignment Tax with Null-Space Constrained Policy Optimization

As Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in real-world applications, it is important to ensure their behaviors align with human values, societal norms, and ethical principles. However, safety alignment under Reinforcement Learning (RL) often suffers from forgetting learned general abilities, which is also known as the alignment tax. To address this issue, we introduce Null-Space constrained Policy Optimization (NSPO), a novel RL framework for LLM safety alignment while preserving their core abilities. The safety policy gradients are geometrically projected into the null space of general tasks, thereby mitigating the safety alignment tax. In addition, we theoretically prove that NSPO preserves the model's original core capabilities, while still guaranteeing a descent direction for effective safety alignment. Extensive experiments demonstrate that NSPO outperforms existing methods by a large margin, achieving state-of-the-art safety performance without sacrificing accuracy on general tasks, including math, code, and instruction-following tasks. Notably, NSPO is data-efficient and only requires 40% of public human-annotated safety data from PKU-SafeRLHF to achieve promising safety performance, without a large amount of mixed general tasks data in existing alignment methods.

A Survey of Self-Evolving Agents: What, When, How, and Where to Evolve on the Path to Artificial Super Intelligence

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities across diverse tasks but remain fundamentally static, unable to adapt their internal parameters to novel tasks, evolving knowledge domains, or dynamic interaction contexts. As LLMs are increasingly deployed in open-ended, interactive environments, this static nature has become a critical bottleneck, necessitating agents that can adaptively reason, act, and evolve in real time. This paradigm shift -- from scaling static models to developing self-evolving agents -- has sparked growing interest in architectures and methods enabling continual learning and adaptation from data, interactions, and experiences. This survey provides the first systematic and comprehensive review of self-evolving agents, organizing the field around three foundational dimensions: what, when, and how to evolve. We examine evolutionary mechanisms across agent components (e.g., models, memory, tools, architecture), categorize adaptation methods by stages (e.g., intra-test-time, inter-test-time), and analyze the algorithmic and architectural designs that guide evolutionary adaptation (e.g., scalar rewards, textual feedback, single-agent and multi-agent systems). Additionally, we analyze evaluation metrics and benchmarks tailored for self-evolving agents, highlight applications in domains such as coding, education, and healthcare, and identify critical challenges and research directions in safety, scalability, and co-evolutionary dynamics. By providing a structured framework for understanding and designing self-evolving agents, this survey establishes a roadmap for advancing more adaptive, robust, and versatile agentic systems in both research and real-world deployments, and ultimately sheds light on the realization of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) where agents evolve autonomously and perform beyond human-level intelligence across tasks.

A3: Android Agent Arena for Mobile GUI Agents with Essential-State Procedural Evaluation

The advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has catalyzed the development of mobile graphic user interface (GUI) AI agents, which is designed to autonomously perform tasks on mobile devices. However, a significant gap persists in mobile GUI agent evaluation, where existing benchmarks predominantly rely on either static frame assessments such as AndroidControl or offline static apps such as AndroidWorld and thus fail to capture agent performance in dynamic, real-world online mobile apps. To address this gap, we present Android Agent Arena (A3), a novel "essential-state" based procedural evaluation system for mobile GUI agents. A3 introduces a benchmark of 100 tasks derived from 20 widely-used, dynamic online apps across 20 categories from the Google Play Store, ensuring evaluation comprehension. A3 also presents a novel "essential-state" based procedural evaluation method that leverages MLLMs as reward models to progressively verify task completion and process achievement. This evaluation approach address the limitations of traditional function based evaluation methods on online dynamic apps. Furthermore, A3 includes a toolkit to streamline Android device interaction, reset online environment and apps and facilitate data collection from both human and agent demonstrations. The complete A3 system, including the benchmark and tools, will be publicly released to provide a robust foundation for future research and development in mobile GUI agents.

AI-Native 6G Physical Layer with Cross-Module Optimization and Cooperative Control Agents

In this article, a framework of AI-native cross-module optimized physical layer with cooperative control agents is proposed, which involves optimization across global AI/ML modules of the physical layer with innovative design of multiple enhancement mechanisms and control strategies. Specifically, it achieves simultaneous optimization across global modules of uplink AI/ML-based joint source-channel coding with modulation, and downlink AI/ML-based modulation with precoding and corresponding data detection, reducing traditional inter-module information barriers to facilitate end-to-end optimization toward global objectives. Moreover, multiple enhancement mechanisms are also proposed, including i) an AI/ML-based cross-layer modulation approach with theoretical analysis for downlink transmission that breaks the isolation of inter-layer features to expand the solution space for determining improved constellation, ii) a utility-oriented precoder construction method that shifts the role of the AI/ML-based CSI feedback decoder from recovering the original CSI to directly generating precoding matrices aiming to improve end-to-end performance, and iii) incorporating modulation into AI/ML-based CSI feedback to bypass bit-level bottlenecks that introduce quantization errors, non-differentiable gradients, and limitations in constellation solution spaces. Furthermore, AI/ML based control agents for optimized transmission schemes are proposed that leverage AI/ML to perform model switching according to channel state, thereby enabling integrated control for global throughput optimization. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed solutions in terms of BLER and throughput. These extensive simulations employ more practical assumptions that are aligned with the requirements of the 3GPP, which hopefully provides valuable insights for future standardization discussions.

Multi-Subarray FD-RIS Enhanced Multi-user Wireless Networks: With Joint Distance-Angle Beamforming

The concept of the frequency diverse reconfigurable intelligent surface (FD-RIS) technology has been introduced, which can enable simultaneous implementation of distance-angle beamforming in far-field communication scenarios. In order to improve the managing ability on undesired harmonic signals and the diversity of frequency offsets, this paper presents a novel multi-subarray FD-RIS framework. In this framework, the RIS is evenly divided into multiple subarrays, each employing a distinct time-modulation frequency to enable the diversity of frequency offsets. Additionally, to suppress the undesired harmonic signals, a new time-modulation technique is employed to periodically adjust the phase-shift of each element. Based on the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS, the signal processing model is first analytically derived. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS, we integrate it into a multi-user communication scenario and formulate an optimization problem that aims to maximize the weighted sum rate of all users. This is achieved by jointly optimizing the active beamforming, time delays, and modulation frequencies. Subsequently, a novel iterative algorithm is proposed to effectively solve this problem with low computing complexity. To evaluate the beamforming capability of the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS,three communication scenarios with varying spatial correlations among users are considered. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS can significantly enhance and sustain the performance of communication networks by leveraging unique distance-angle beamforming, even when users share the same angular position where traditional RIS experiences severe degradation.

Fluid Antenna System-Enabled UAV Communications in the Finite Blocklength Regime

This paper develops a comprehensive framework for the performance analysis of fluid antenna system (FAS)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) relaying networks operating in the finite blocklength regime. Our contribution lies in establishing a rigorous methodology for characterizing system reliability under diverse propagation environments. Closed-form expressions for the block error rate (BLER) are derived by employing a tractable eigenvalue-based approximation of the spatially correlated UAV-to-user link, whose underlying independent diversity components are modeled as Nakagami-$m$ fading. This approach addresses both line-of-sight (LoS) dominant rural and probabilistic non-line-of-sight (NLoS) urban scenarios. Furthermore, a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic analysis is developed, revealing the fundamental diversity order of the UAV-to-user link. Based on this, we further address the practical issue of energy efficiency. A realistic energy efficiency maximization problem is formulated, which explicitly accounts for the time and energy overhead inherent in the FAS port selection process, a factor often omitted in idealized models. An efficient hierarchical algorithm is then proposed to jointly optimize the key system parameters. Extensive numerical results validate the analysis and illustrate that while FASs can yield substantial power gains, the operational overhead introduces a non-trivial trade-off. This trade-off leads to an optimal number of ports and fundamentally different UAV deployment strategies in rural versus urban environments. This work provides both foundational analysis and practical design guidelines for FAS-enabled UAV communications.

Multi-Port Selection for FAMA: Massive Connectivity with Fewer RF Chains than Users

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) is an emerging technology in massive access designed to meet the demands of future wireless communication networks by naturally mitigating multiuser interference through the utilization of the fluid antenna system (FAS) at RF-chain-limited mobile device. The transition from single-active-port to multi-active-port on a shared RF chain for slow FAMA can greatly enhance its multiplexing capability but is not well understood. Motivated by this, this paper proposes and studies three port selection methods: the optimal exhaustive-search port selection (EPS) as a performance upper bound, and two suboptimal, low-complexity algorithms, namely incremental port selection (IPS) and decremental port selection (DPS). Then the performance of multi-active-port slow FAMA is analyzed, and the complexity of the proposed methods is compared. Simulation results indicate that the proposed methods outperform current state-of-the-art multi-port FAMA techniques. In particular, IPS achieves near-optimal performance while maintaining manageable computational complexity. This research provides a more general framework for port selection in FAMA systems.

Frequency Diverse (FD)-RIS-Enhanced Covert Communications: Defense Against Wiretapping via Joint Distance-Angle Beamforming

In response to the security blind zone challenges faced by traditional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided covert communication (CC) systems, the joint distance-angle beamforming capability of frequency diverse RIS (FD-RIS) shows significant potential for addressing these limitations. Therefore, this paper initially incorporates the FD-RIS into the CC systems and proposes the corresponding CC transmission scheme. Specifically, we first develop the signal processing model of the FD-RIS, which considers effective control of harmonic signals by leveraging the time-delay techniques. The joint distance-angle beamforming capability is then validated through its normalized beampattern. Based on this model, we then construct an FD-RIS-assisted CC system under a multi-warden scenario and derive an approximate closed-form expression for the covert constraints by considering the worst-case eavesdropping conditions and utilizing the logarithmic moment-generating function. An optimization problem is formulated which aims at maximizing the covert user's achievable rate under covert constrains by jointly designing the time delays and modulation frequencies. To tackle this non-convex problem, an iterative algorithm with assured convergence is proposed to effectively solve the time-delay and modulation frequency variables. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, we consider three communication scenarios with varying spatial correlations between the covert user and wardens. Simulation results demonstrate that FD-RIS can significantly improve covert performance, particularly in angular-overlap scenarios where traditional RIS experiences severe degradation. These findings further highlight the effectiveness of FD-RIS in enhancing CC robustness under challenging spatial environments.

Autocorrelation Test under Frequent Mean Shifts

Testing for the presence of autocorrelation is a fundamental problem in time series analysis. Classical methods such as the Box-Pierce test rely on the assumption of stationarity, necessitating the removal of non-stationary components such as trends or shifts in the mean prior to application. However, this is not always practical, particularly when the mean structure is complex, such as being piecewise constant with frequent shifts. In this work, we propose a new inferential framework for autocorrelation in time series data under frequent mean shifts. In particular, we introduce a Shift-Immune Portmanteau (SIP) test that reliably tests for autocorrelation and is robust against mean shifts. We illustrate an application of our method to nanopore sequencing data.

jina-reranker-v3 is a 0.6B-parameter multilingual listwise reranker that introduces a novel "last but not late" interaction. Unlike late interaction models like ColBERT that encode documents separately before multi-vector matching, our approach applies causal attention between the query and all candidate documents in the same context window, enabling rich interactions before extracting contextual embeddings from each document's final token. The new model achieves state-of-the-art BEIR performance with 61.94 nDCG@10 while being significantly smaller than other models with comparable performance.

From Fixed to Fluid: Unlocking the New Potential with Fluid RIS (FRIS)

Owing to its flexible and intelligent electromagnetic signal manipulation, the technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) has attracted widespread attention. However, the potential of current RISs can only be partly unlocked due to their fixed geometry and element patterns. Motivated by the concept of the fluid antenna system (FAS), a novel RIS system, termed fluid RIS (FRIS), has been developed. Unlike traditional RISs, FRIS allows the element positions or radiation patterns to exhibit ``fluid" properties, i.e., dynamic reconfigurability, to adapt to the wireless environment, offering enhanced beamforming flexibility and environmental adaptability. Given that research on FRIS is still in its infancy, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of its current developments and future prospects. Specifically, the key features of FRIS are first presented, including its classification, fundamental mechanisms, and advantages. Next, potential application scenarios of FRIS are analyzed and discussed, followed by two illustrative case studies demonstrating its potential. Finally, the main open challenges and future research directions related to FRIS are highlighted.
