Limit distributions for KPZ growth models with spatially homogeneous random initial conditions

For stationary KPZ growth in 1+1 dimensions the height fluctuations are governed by the Baik-Rains distribution. Using the totally asymmetric single step growth model, alias TASEP, we investigate height fluctuations for a general class of spatially homogeneous random initial conditions. We prove that for TASEP there is a one-parameter family of limit distributions, labeled by the diffusion coefficient of the initial conditions. The distributions are defined through a variational formula. We use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain their numerical plots. Also discussed is the connection to the six-vertex model at its conical point.

On global attractors and radiation damping for nonrelativistic particle coupled to scalar field

We consider the Hamiltonian system of scalar wave field and a single nonrelativistic particle coupled in a translation invariant manner. The particle is also subject to a confining external potential. The stationary solutions of the system are a Coulomb type wave field centered at those particle positions for which the external force vanishes. We prove that solutions of finite energy converge, in suitable local energy seminorms, to the set ${\cal S}$ of all stationary states in the long time limit $t\to\pm\infty$. Further we show that the rate of relaxation to a stable stationary state is determined by spatial decay of initial data. The convergence is followed by the radiation of the dispersion wave which is a solution to the free wave equation. Similar relaxation has been proved previously for the case of relativistic particle when the speed of the particle is less than the speed of light. Now we extend these results to nonrelativistic particle with arbitrary superlight velocity. However, we restrict ourselves by the plane particle trajectories. The extension to general case remains an open problem.

KPZ universality class and the anchored Toom interface

We revisit the anchored Toom interface and use KPZ scaling theory to argue that the interface fluctuations are governed by the Airy_1 process with the role of space and time interchanged. There is no free parameter. The predictions are numerically well confirmed for space-time statistics in the stationary state. In particular the spatial fluctuations of the interface are given by the GOE edge distribution of Tracy and Widom.

Scattering of Solitons for Dirac Equation Coupled to a Particle

We establish soliton-like asymptotics for finite energy solutions to the Dirac equation coupled to a relativistic particle. Any solution with initial state close to the solitary manifold, converges in long time limit to a sum of traveling wave and outgoing free wave. The convergence holds in global energy norm. The proof uses spectral theory and the symplectic projection onto solitary manifold in the Hilbert phase space.

The bipolaron in the strong coupling limit

The bipolaron are two electrons coupled to the elastic deformations of an ionic crystal. We study this system in the Fröhlich approximation. If the Coulomb repulsion dominates, the lowest energy states are two well separated polarons. Otherwise the electrons form a bound pair. We prove the validity of the Pekar-Tomasevich energy functional in the strong coupling limit, yielding estimates on the coupling parameters for which the binding energy is strictly positive. Under the condition of a strictly positive binding energy we prove the existence of a ground state at fixed total momentum $P$, provided $P$ is not too large.

On a Two-Temperature Problem for Wave Equation

Consider the wave equation with constant or variable coefficients in $\R^3$. The initial datum is a random function with a finite mean density of energy that also satisfies a Rosenblatt- or Ibragimov-Linnik-type mixing condition. The random function converges to different space-homogeneous processes as $x_3\to\pm\infty$, with the distributions $μ_\pm$. We study the distribution $μ_t$ of the random solution at a time $t\in\R$. The main result is the convergence of $μ_t$ to a Gaussian translation-invariant measure as $t\to\infty$ that means central limit theorem for the wave equation. The proof is based on the Bernstein `room-corridor' argument. The application to the case of the Gibbs measures $μ_\pm=g_\pm$ with two different temperatures $T_{\pm}$ is given. Limiting mean energy current density formally is $-\infty\cdot (0,0,T_+ -T_-)$ for the Gibbs measures, and it is finite and equals to $-C(0,0,T_+ -T_-)$ with $C>0$ for the convolution with a nontrivial test function.

Local stationarity for lattice dynamics in the harmonic approximation

We consider the lattice dynamics in the harmonic approximation for We consider the lattice dynamics in the harmonic approximation for a simple hypercubic lattice with arbitrary unit cell. The initial data are random according to a probability measure which enforces slow spatial variation on the linear scale $ε^{-1}$. We establish two time regimes. For times of order $ε^{-γ}$, $0<γ<1$, locally the measure converges to a Gaussian measure which is space-time stationary with a covariance inherited from the initial (in general, non-Gaussian) measure. For times of order $ε^{-1}$ this local space covariance changes in time and is governed by a semiclassical transport equation.

Ground state degeneracy of the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian inlcuding spin

We consider an electron, spin 1/2, minimally coupled to the quantized radiation field in the nonrelativistic approximation, a situation defined by the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian $H$. There is no external potential and $H$ fibers as $\int^\oplus H_p dp$ according to the total momentum $p$. We prove that the ground state subspace of $H_p$ is two-fold degenerate provided the charge $e$ and the total momentum $p$ are sufficiently small. We also establish that the total angular momentum of the ground state subspace is $\pm1/2$ and study the case of a confining external potential.

On the convergence to statistical equilibrium for harmonic crystals

We consider the dynamics of a harmonic crystal in $d$ dimensions with $n$ components, $d,n$ arbitrary, $d,n\ge 1$, and study the distribution $\mu_t$ of the solution at time $t\in\R$. The initial measure $\mu_0$ has a translation-invariant correlation matrix, zero mean, and finite mean energy density. It also satisfies a Rosenblatt- resp. Ibragimov-Linnik type mixing condition. The main result is the convergence of $\mu_t$ to a Gaussian measure as $t\to\infty$. The proof is based on the long time asymptotics of the Green's function and on Bernstein's ``room-corridors'' method.

Long-time Behavior for the Stochastic Ising Model with Unbounded Random Couplings

We consider the ferromagnetic Ising model with Glauber spin flip dynamics in one dimension. The external magnetic field vanishes and the couplings are i.i.d. random variables. If their distribution has compact support, the disorder averaged spin auto-correlation function has an exponential decay in time. We prove that, if the couplings are unbounded, the decay switches to either a power law or a stretched exponential, in general.

Current fluctuations for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process

The time-integrated current of the TASEP has non-Gaussian fluctuations of order $t^{1/3}$. The recently discovered connection to random matrices and the Painlevé II Riemann-Hilbert problem provides a technique through which we obtain the probability distribution of the current fluctuations, in particular their dependence on initial conditions, and the stationary two-point function. Some open problems are explained.

Semiclassical limit for the Schroedinger equation with a short scale periodic potential

We consider the dynamics generated by the Schroedinger operator $H=-{1/2}Δ+ V(x) + W(\epsi x)$, where $V$ is a lattice periodic potential and $W$ an external potential which varies slowly on the scale set by the lattice spacing. We prove that in the limit $\epsi \to 0$ the time dependent position operator and, more generally, semiclassical observables converge strongly to a limit which is determined by the semiclassical dynamics.

An Exactly Solved Model of Three Dimensional Surface Growth in the Anisotropic KPZ Regime

We generalize the surface growth model of Gates and Westcott to arbitrary inclination. The exact steady growth velocity is of saddle type with principal curvatures of opposite sign. According to Wolf this implies logarithmic height correlations, which we prove by mapping the steady state of the surface to world lines of free fermions with chiral boundary conditions.
