SN 2021adxl: A luminous nearby interacting supernova in an extremely low metallicity environment

SN 2021adxl is a slowly evolving, luminous, Type IIn supernova with asymmetric emission line profiles, similar to the well-studied SN 2010jl. We present extensive optical, near-ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy covering ~1.5 years post discovery. SN 2021adxl occurred in an unusual environment, atop a vigorously star-forming region that is offset from its host galaxy core. The appearance of Ly-alpha, O II, as well as the compact core, would classify the host of SN 2021adxl as a Blueberry galaxy, analogous to the higher redshift Green Pea galaxies. Using several abundance indicators, we find a metallicity of the explosion environment of only 10% solar, the lowest reported metallicity for a Type IIn SN environment. SN 2021adxl reaches a peak magnitude of r ~ -20.2 mag and since discovery, SN 2021adxl has faded by only ~4 magnitudes in the r band with a cumulative radiated energy of ~1.5e50 erg over 18 months. SN 2021adxl shows strong signs of interaction with a complex circumstellar medium, seen by the detection of X-rays, revealed by the detection of coronal emission lines, and through multi-component hydrogen and helium profiles. In order to further understand this interaction, we model the H{\alpha} profile using a Monte-Carlo electron scattering code. The blueshifted high-velocity component is consistent with emission from a radially thin, spherical shell resulting in the broad emission components due to electron scattering. Using the velocity evolution of this emitting shell, we find that the SN ejecta collide with circumstellar material of at least 5 Msun, assuming a steady-state mass-loss rate of 4-6e-3 Msun per year for the first ~200 days of evolution. Continuing the observations of SN 2021adxl may reveal signatures of dust formation or an infrared excess, similar to that seen for SN 2010jl.

First light of the Integral Field Unit of GRIS on the GREGOR solar telescope

An Integral Field Unit (IFU) based on image-slicers has been added to the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS). This upgrade to the instrument makes possible 2D spectropolarimetry in the near-infrared by simultaneously recording the full Stokes profiles of spectral lines (in a given spectral interval) at all the points in the field of view. It provides high-cadence spectropolarimetric observations at the instrument's high spatial resolution and high polarization sensitivity at the GREGOR solar telescope. The IFU is ideal for observing the polarized spectrum of fast-evolving solar features at high spatial and spectral resolutions. The high observing cadence opens the possibility of time-series observations. The analysis of observations to this level of accuracy is essential for understanding the complex dynamics and interactions of solar plasma and magnetic fields. The image slicer of the IFU has eight slices of width 100 micron, covering a total field of view of 6" x 3". It was designed and built within the framework of the European projects SOLARNET and GREST, as a prototype for future instruments of the European Solar Telescope (EST) and was integrated into GRIS. After two commissioning campaigns in 2017 and 2018, the IFU was finally installed at the end of September 2018 and offered to all observers who use the telescope.

Two stripped envelope supernovae with circumstellar interaction -- but only one really shows it

We present SN 2019tsf (ZTF19ackjszs) and SN 2019oys (ZTF19abucwzt). These two stripped envelope Type Ib supernovae suddenly showed a (re-)brightening in their late light curves. We investigate this in the context of circumstellar material (CSM) interaction with previously ejected material, a phenomenon that is unusual among SE SNe. We analyse observational data, consisting of optical light curves and spectra. For SN 2019oys we also have detections in radio as well as limits from UV and X-rays. Both light curves show spectacular re-brightening after about 100 days. In the case of SN 2019tsf, the re-brightening is followed by a new period of decline, and the spectra never show signs of narrow emission lines that would indicate CSM interaction. On the contrary, SN 2019oys made a spectral makeover from a Type Ib to a spectrum clearly dominated by CSM interaction at the light curve brightening phase. Deep spectra reveal a plethora of narrow high ionization lines, including coronal lines, and the radio observations show strong emission. The rather similar light curve behaviour indicate CSM interaction as the powering source. For SN 2019oys the evidence for a phase where the ejecta hit H-rich material, likely ejected from the progenitor star, is conspicuous. We observe strong narrow lines of H and He, but also a plethora of high ionization lines, including coronal lines, revealing shock interaction. Spectral simulations of SN 2019oys show two distinct density components, one with density > 1e9/cm3, dominated by somewhat broader, low ionization lines of H I, He I, Na I and Ca II, and one with narrow, high ionization lines at a density about 1e6 /cm3. The former is strongly affected by electron scattering. The evidence for CSM interaction in SN 2019oys is corroborated by detections in radio. On the contrary, for SN 2019tsf, we find little evidence in the spectra for any CSM interaction.

SN 2020bqj: a Type Ibn supernova with a long lasting peak plateau

Context: Type Ibn supernovae are a rare class of stripped envelope supernovae interacting with a helium-rich CSM. The majority of the SNe Ibn reported display a surprising homogeneity in their fast lightcurves and starforming hosts. Aims: We present the discovery and study of SN 2020bqj (ZTF20aalrqbu), a SN Ibn with a long-duration peak plateau lasting 40 days and hosted by a faint low-mass galaxy. We aim to explain its peculiar properties using an extensive data set. Methods: We compare the evolution of SN 2020bqj with SNe Ibn from the literature. We fit the bolometric and multi-band lightcurves with different powering mechanism models. Results: The risetime, peak magnitude and spectral features of SN 2020bqj are consistent with those of most SNe Ibn, but the SN is a clear outlier based on its bright, long-lasting peak plateau and low host mass. We show through modeling that the lightcurve can be powered predominantly by shock heating from the interaction of the SN ejecta and a dense CSM. The peculiar Type Ibn SN 2011hw is a close analog to SN 2020bqj, suggesting a similar progenitor and CSM scenario. In this scenario a very massive progenitor star in the transitional phase between a luminous blue variable and a compact Wolf-Rayet star undergoes core-collapse, embedded in a dense helium-rich CSM with an elevated opacity compared to normal SNe Ibn, due to the presence of residual hydrogen. This scenario is consistent with the observed properties of SN 2020bqj and the modeling results. Conclusions: SN 2020bqj is a compelling example of a transitional SN Ibn/IIn based on not only its spectral features, but also its lightcurve, host galaxy properties and the inferred progenitor properties. The strong similarity with SN 2011hw suggests this subclass may be the result of a progenitor in a stellar evolution phase that is distinct from those of progenitors of regular SNe Ibn.

Candidate Electromagnetic Counterpart to the Binary Black Hole Merger Gravitational Wave Event S190521g

We report the first plausible optical electromagnetic (EM) counterpart to a (candidate) binary black hole (BBH) merger. Detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), the EM flare is consistent with expectations for a kicked BBH merger in the accretion disk of an active galactic nucleus (AGN), and is unlikely ($<O(0.01\%$)) due to intrinsic variability of this source. The lack of color evolution implies that it is not a supernovae and instead is strongly suggestive of a constant temperature shock. Other false-positive events, such as microlensing or a tidal disruption event, are ruled out or constrained to be $<O(0.1\%$). If the flare is associated with S190521g, we find plausible values of: total mass $ M_{\rm BBH} \sim 100 M_{\odot}$, kick velocity $v_k \sim 200\, {\rm km}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$ at $\theta \sim 60^{\circ}$ in a disk with aspect ratio $H/a \sim 0.01$ (i.e., disk height $H$ at radius $a$) and gas density $\rho \sim 10^{-10}\, {\rm g}\, {\rm cm}^{-3}$. The merger could have occurred at a disk migration trap ($a \sim 700\, r_{g}$; $r_g \equiv G M_{\rm SMBH} / c^2$, where $M_{\rm SMBH}$ is the mass of the AGN supermassive black hole). The combination of parameters implies a significant spin for at least one of the black holes in S190521g. The timing of our spectroscopy prevents useful constraints on broad-line asymmetry due to an off-center flare. We predict a repeat flare in this source due to a re-encountering with the disk in $\sim 1.6\, {\rm yr}\, (M_{\rm SMBH}/10^{8}M_{\odot})\, (a/10^{3}r_{g})^{3/2}$.

Observations of the first electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave source by the TOROS collaboration

We present the results of prompt optical follow-up of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational-wave event GW170817 by the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South Collaboration (TOROS). We detected highly significant dimming in the light curves of the counterpart (Delta g=0.17+-0.03 mag, Delta r=0.14+-0.02 mag, Delta i=0.10 +- 0.03 mag) over the course of only 80 minutes of observations obtained ~35 hr after the trigger with the T80-South telescope. A second epoch of observations, obtained ~59 hr after the event with the EABA 1.5m telescope, confirms the fast fading nature of the transient. The observed colors of the counterpart suggest that this event was a "blue kilonova" relatively free of lanthanides.

Improving Tagging Performance by Using Voting Taggers

We present a bootstrapping method to develop an annotated corpus, which is specially useful for languages with few available resources. The method is being applied to develop a corpus of Spanish of over 5Mw. The method consists on taking advantage of the collaboration of two different POS taggers. The cases in which both taggers agree present a higher accuracy and are used to retrain the taggers.
