FerBo: a noise resilient qubit hybridizing Andreev and fluxonium states

We propose a novel superconducting quantum circuit that should be robust against both relaxation and dephasing over a wide and experimentally accessible parameter range. The circuit consists of a parallel arrangement of a large inductance, a small capacitor, and a well-transmitting Josephson weak link. Protection against relaxation arises from the hybridization between the fermionic degree of freedom associated with Andreev levels in the weak link and the bosonic electromagnetic mode of the LC circuit, hence its name: FerBo. Furthermore, as in the fluxonium qubit, delocalization of the wavefunctions in phase space provides resilience against dephasing.

Ground state phase diagram and "parity flipping'' microwave transitions in a gate-tunable Josephson Junction

We probed a gate-tunable InAs nanowire Josephson weak link by coupling it to a microwave resonator. Tracking the resonator frequency shift when the weak link is close to pinch-off, we observe that the ground state of the latter alternates between a singlet and a doublet when varying either the gate voltage or the superconducting phase difference across it. The corresponding microwave absorption spectra display lines that approach zero energy close to the singlet-doublet boundaries, suggesting parity flipping transitions, which are in principle forbidden in microwave spectroscopy and expected to arise only in tunnel spectroscopy. We tentatively interpret them by means of an ancillary state isolated in the junction acting as a reservoir for individual electrons.

Effects of the measurement power on states discrimination and dynamics in a circuit-QED experiment

We explore the effects of driving a cavity at a large photon number in a circuit-QED experiment where the ``matter-like'' part corresponds to an unique Andreev level in a superconducting weak link. The three many-body states of the weak link, corresponding to the occupation of the Andreev level by 0, 1 or 2 quasiparticles, lead to different cavity frequency shifts. We show how the non-linearity inherited by the cavity from its coupling to the weak link affects the state discrimination and the photon number calibration. Both effects require treating the evolution of the driven system beyond the dispersive limit. In addition, we observe how transition rates between the circuit states (quantum and parity jumps) are affected by the microwave power, and compare the measurements with a theory accounting for the ``dressing'' of the Andreev states by the cavity.

Signatures of interactions in the Andreev spectrum of nanowire Josephson junctions

We performed microwave spectroscopy of an InAs nanowire between superconducting contacts implementing a finite-length, multi-channel Josephson weak link. Certain features in the spectra, such as the splitting by spin-orbit interactions of the transition lines among Andreev states, have been already understood in terms of non-interacting models. However, we identify here additional transitions, which evidence the presence of Coulomb interactions. By combining experimental measurements and model calculations, we reach a qualitative understanding of these very rich Andreev spectra.

Circuit-QED with phase-biased Josephson weak links

By coupling a superconducting weak link to a microwave resonator, recent experiments probed the spectrum and achieved the quantum manipulation of Andreev states in various systems. However, the quantitative understanding of the response of the resonator to changes in the occupancy of the Andreev levels, which are of fermionic nature, is missing. Here, using Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to describe the weak link and a general formulation of the coupling to the resonator, we calculate the shift of the resonator frequency as a function of the levels occupancy and describe how transitions are induced by phase or electric field microwave drives. We apply this formalism to analyze recent experimental results obtained using circuit-QED techniques on superconducting atomic contacts and semiconducting nanowire Josephson junctions.

From adiabatic to dispersive readout of quantum circuits

Spectral properties of a quantum circuit are efficiently read out by monitoring the resonance frequency shift it induces in a microwave resonator coupled to it. When the two systems are strongly detuned, theory attributes the shift to an effective resonator capacitance or inductance that depends on the quantum circuit state. At small detuning, the shift arises from the exchange of virtual photons, as described by the Jaynes-Cummings model. Here we present a theory bridging these two limits and illustrate, with several examples, its necessity for a general description of quantum circuits readout.

Spin-orbit splitting of Andreev states revealed by microwave spectroscopy

We have performed microwave spectroscopy of Andreev states in superconducting weak links tailored in an InAs-Al (core-full shell) epitaxially-grown nanowire. The spectra present distinctive features, with bundles of four lines crossing when the superconducting phase difference across the weak link is 0 or $\pi.$ We interpret these as arising from zero-field spin-split Andreev states. A simple analytical model, which takes into account the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a nanowire containing several transverse subbands, explains these features and their evolution with magnetic field. Our results show that the spin degree of freedom is addressable in Josephson junctions, and constitute a first step towards its manipulation.

Conduction Channels of an InAs-Al nanowire Josephson weak link

We present a quantitative characterization of an electrically tunable Josephson junction defined in an InAs nanowire proximitized by an epitax-ially-grown superconducting Al shell. The gate-dependence of the number of conduction channels and of the set of transmission coefficients are extracted from the highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. Although the transmissions evolve non-monotonically, the number of independent channels can be tuned, and configurations with a single quasi-ballistic channel achieved.

Coherent manipulation of Andreev states in superconducting atomic contacts

Coherent control of quantum states has been demonstrated in a variety of superconducting devices. In all these devices, the variables that are manipulated are collective electromagnetic degrees of freedom: charge, superconducting phase, or flux. Here, we demonstrate the coherent manipulation of a quantum system based on Andreev bound states, which are microscopic quasiparticle states inherent to superconducting weak links. Using a circuit quantum electrodynamics setup we perform single-shot readout of this "Andreev qubit". We determine its excited state lifetime and coherence time to be in the microsecond range. Quantum jumps and parity switchings are observed in continuous measurements. In addition to possible quantum information applications, such Andreev qubits are a testbed for the physics of single elementary excitations in superconductors.

Theory of microwave spectroscopy of Andreev bound states with a Josephson junction

We present a microscopic theory for the current through a tunnel Josephson junction coupled to a non-linear environment, which consists of an Andreev two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator. It models a recent experiment [Bretheau, Girit, Pothier, Esteve, and Urbina, Nature (London) 499, 312 (2013)] on photon spectroscopy of Andreev bound states in a superconducting atomic-size contact. We find the eigenenergies and eigenstates of the environment and derive the current through the junction due to inelastic Cooper pair tunneling. The current-voltage characteristic reveals the transitions between the Andreev bound states, the excitation of the harmonic mode that hybridizes with the Andreev bound states, as well as multi-photon processes. The calculated spectra are in fair agreement with the experimental data.

Superconducting atomic contacts inductively coupled to a microwave resonator

We describe and characterize a microwave setup to probe the Andreev levels of a superconducting atomic contact. The contact is part of a superconducting loop inductively coupled to a superconducting coplanar resonator. By monitoring the resonator reflection coefficient close to its resonance frequency as a function of both flux through the loop and frequency of a second tone we perform spectroscopy of the transition between two Andreev levels of highly transmitting channels of the contact. The results indicate how to perform coherent manipulation of these states.

Dynamics of quasiparticle trapping in Andreev levels

We present a theory describing the trapping and untrapping of quasiparticles in the Andreev bound level of a single-channel weak link between two superconductors. We calculate the rates of the transitions between even and odd occupations of the Andreev level induced by absorption and emission of both photons and phonons. We apply the theory to a recent experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 257003 (2011)] in which the dynamics of the trapping of quasiparticles in the Andreev levels of superconducting atomic contacts coupled to a Josephson junction was measured. We show that the plasma energy $hν_p$ of the Josephson junction defines a rather abrupt transition between a fast relaxation regime dominated by coupling to photons and a slow relaxation regime dominated by coupling to phonons. With realistic parameters the theory provides a semi-quantitative description of the experimental results.

Supercurrent Spectroscopy of Andreev States

We measure the excitation spectrum of a superconducting atomic contact. In addition to the usual continuum above the superconducting gap, the single particle excitation spectrum contains discrete, spin-degenerate Andreev levels inside the gap. Quasiparticle excitations are induced by a broadband on-chip microwave source and detected by measuring changes in the supercurrent flowing through the atomic contact. Since microwave photons excite quasiparticles in pairs, two types of transitions are observed: Andreev transitions, which consists of putting two quasiparticles in an Andreev level, and transitions to odd states with a single quasiparticle in an Andreev level and the other one in the continuum. In contrast to absorption spectroscopy, supercurrent spectroscopy allows detection of long-lived odd states.

Searching for thermal signatures of persistent currents in normal metal rings

We introduce a calorimetric approach to probe persistent currents in normal metal rings. The heat capacity of a large ensemble of silver rings is measured by nanocalorimetry under a varying magnetic field at different temperatures (60 mK, 100 mK and 150 mK). Periodic oscillations versus magnetic field are detected in the phase signal of the temperature oscillations, though not in the amplitude (both of them directly linked to the heat capacity). The period of these oscillations ($\Phi_0/2$, with $\Phi_0 = h/e$ the magnetic flux quantum) and their evolution with temperature are in agreement with theoretical predictions. In contrast, the amplitude of the corresponding heat capacity oscillations (several $k_{\mathrm{B}}$) is two orders of magnitude larger than predicted by theory.

Superconducting Quantum Point Contacts

We review our experiments on the electronic transport properties of atomic contacts between metallic electrodes, in particular superconducting ones. Despite ignorance of the exact atomic configuration, these ultimate quantum point contacts can be manipulated and well characterized in-situ. They allow performing fundamental tests of the scattering theory of quantum transport. In particular, we discuss the case of the Josephson effect.

Evidence for long-lived quasiparticles trapped in superconducting point contacts

We have observed that the supercurrent across phase-biased, highly transmitting atomic size contacts is strongly reduced within a broad phase interval around π. We attribute this effect to quasiparticle trapping in one of the discrete sub-gap Andreev bound states formed at the contact. Trapping occurs essentially when the Andreev energy is smaller than half the superconducting gap Δ, a situation in which the lifetime of trapped quasiparticles is found to exceed 100 \mus. The origin of this sharp energy threshold is presently not understood.

Asymmetric noise probed with a Josephson junction

Fluctuations of the current through a tunnel junction are measured using a Josephson junction. The current noise adds to the bias current of the Josephson junction and affects its switching out of the supercurrent branch. The experiment is carried out in a regime where switching is determined by thermal activation. The variance of the noise results in an elevated effective temperature, whereas the third cumulant, related to its asymmetric character, leads to a difference in the switching rates observed for opposite signs of the current through the tunnel junction. Measurements are compared quantitatively with recent theoretical predictions.

Phase controlled superconducting proximity effect probed by tunneling spectroscopy

Using a dual-mode STM-AFM microscope operating below 50mK we measured the Local Density of States (LDoS) along small normal wires connected at both ends to superconductors with different phases. We observe that a uniform minigap can develop in the whole normal wire and in the superconductors near the interfaces. The minigap depends periodically on the phase difference. The quasiclassical theory of superconductivity applied to a simplified 1D model geometry accounts well for the data.
