Phase Transitions in Three-Dimensional Bosonic Systems in Optical Lattices

We formulate the Collective Quantum Field Theory for three-dimensional bosonic optical lattices and evaluate its consequences in a mean-field approximation to two collective fields, proposed by Fred Cooper et al. and in a lowest-order Variational Perturbation Theory (VPT). It is shown that present mean-field approximation predicts some essential features of the experimentally observed dependence of the critical temperature on the coupling strength and a second - order quantum phase transition. In contrast to a recent prediction for atomic gases by Fred Cooper et. al., we find no superfluid state with zero condensate fraction.

Phonon induced Superconductivity of High Temperatures in Electrical Graphene Superlattices

We discuss the BCS theory for electrons in graphene with a superimposed electrical unidirectional superlattice potential (SL). New Dirac points emerge together with van Hove singularities (VHS) linking them. We obtain a superconducting transition temperature $ T_c $ for chemical potentials close to the VHS assuming that acoustic phonon coupling should be the dominant mechanism. Pairing of two onsite electrons with one electron close to the $ {\bf K} $ and the other close to the $ -{\bf K} $ point is the most stable pair formation. The resulting order parameter is almost constant over the entire SL.

Effective Action and Field Equation for BEC from Weak to Strong Couplings

While free and weakly interacting nonrelativistic particles are described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is a nonlinear self-interacting Schrödinger equation, the phenomena in the strong- coupling limit are governed by an effective action that is extremized by a double-fractional generalization of this equation. Its particle orbits perform Lèvy walks rather than Gaussian random walks.

Fractional Quantum Field Theory, Path Integral, and Stochastic Differential Equation for Strongly Interacting Many-Particle Systems

While free and weakly interacting particles are well described by a a second-quantized nonlinear Schrödinger field, or relativistic versions of it, the fields of strongly interacting particles are governed by effective actions, whose quadratic terms are extremized by fractional wave equations. Their particle orbits perform universal Lévy walks rather than Gaussian random walks with perturbations.

Quantum phase transitions in optical lattices beyond Bogoliubov approximation

We study the quantum phase transition in optical lattices using ordinary Bose Hubbard Hamiltonian within two loop approximation in variational perturbation theory. We have shown that this approximation can reproduce superfluid Mott insulator transition in contrast to the simple Bogoliubov or Hartee - Fock - Popov approximations. The superfluid fraction and ground state energy per particle vs input parameters of the model are studied.

On Electron-Positron Pair Production by a Spatially Nonuniform Electric Field

A detailed analysis of electron-positron pair creation induced by a spatially nonuniform and static electric field from vacuum is presented. A typical example is provided by the Sauter potential. For this potential, we derive the analytic expressions for vacuum decay and pair production rate accounted for the entire range of spatial variations. In the limit of a sharp step, we recover the divergent result due to the singular electric field at the origin. The limit of a constant field reproduces the classical result of Euler, Heisenberg and Schwinger, if the latter is properly averaged over the width of a spatial variation. The pair production by the Sauter potential is described for different physical regimes from weak to strong fields. In all these regimes, the locally constant-field rate is shown to be the upper limit.

Hubbard-Stratonovich Transformation: Successes, Failure, and Cure

We recall the successes of the Hubbard-Stratonovich Transformation (HST) of many-body theory, point out its failure to cope with competing channels of collective phenomena and show how to overcome this by Variational Perturbation Theory. That yields exponentially fast converging results, thanks to the help of a variety of {\it collective classical fields}, rather than a fluctuating {\it collective quantum field} as suggested by the HST.

Converting Divergent Weak-Coupling into Exponentially Fast Convergent Strong-Coupling Expansions

With the help of a simple variational procedure it is possible to convert the partial sums of order $N$ of many divergent series expansions $f(g)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_n g^n$ into partial sums $\sum_{n=0}^N b_n g^{- ωn}$, where $0<ω<1$ is a parameter that parametrizes the approach to the large-$g$ limit. The latter are partial sums of a strong-coupling expansion of $f(g)$ which converge against $f(g)$ for $g$ {\em outside} a certain divergence radius. The error decreases exponentially fast for large $N$, like $e^{-{\rm const.}\times N^{1-ω}}$. We present a review of the method and various applications.

New Gauge Symmetry in Gravity and the Evanescent Role of Torsion

If the Einstein-Hilbert action ${\cal L}_{\rm EH}\propto R$ is re-expressed in Riemann-Cartan spacetime using the gauge fields of translations, the vierbein field $h^α_μ$, and the gauge field of local Lorentz transformations, the spin connection $A_{μα}{}^ β$, there exists a new gauge symmetry which permits reshuffling the torsion, partially or totally, into the Cartan curvature term of the Einstein tensor, and back, via a {\em new multivalued gauge transformation\/}. Torsion can be chosen at will by an arbitrary gauge fixing functional. There exist many equivalent ways of specifing the theory, for instance Einstein's traditional way where ${\cal L}_{\rm EH}$ is expressed completely in terms of the metric $g_{μν}=h^ α{}_μh_ α{}_ ν$, and the torsion is zero, or Einstein's teleparallel formulation, where ${\cal L}_{\rm EH}$ is expressed in terms of the torsion tensor, or an infinity of intermediate ways. As far as the gravitational field in the far-zone of a celestial object is concerned, matter composed of spinning particles can be replaced by matter with only orbital angular momentum, without changing the long-distance forces, no matter which of the various new gauge representations is used.

Equivalence Principle and Field Quantization in Curved Spacetime

To comply with the equivalence principle, fields in curved spacetime can be quantized only in the neighborhood of each point, where one can construct a freely falling M i n k o w s k i frame with z e r o curvature. In each such frame, the geometric forces of gravity can be replaced by a selfinteracting spin-2 field, as proposed by Feynman in 1962. At a n y fixed distance $R$ from a black hole, the vacuum in each freely falling volume element acts like a thermal bath of all particles with Unruh temperature T_U=\hbar GM/2πc R^2. At the horizon R=2GM/c^2, the falling vacua show the Hawking temperature T_H=\hbar c^3/8πGMk_B.

Stiff quantum polymers

At ultralow temperatures, polymers exhibit quantum behavior, which is calculated here for the second and fourth moments of the end-to-end distribution in the large-stiffness regime. The result should be measurable for polymers in wide optical traps.

Neutrino Mass Differences and Nonunitarity of Neutrino Mixing Matrix from Interfering Recoil Ions

We show that the recent observation of the time modulation of two-body weak decays of heavy ions reveals the mass content of the electron neutrinos via interference patterns in the recoiling ion wave function. From the modulation period we derive the difference of the square masses $ Δm^2\approx 22.5\times 10^{-5}$ eV${}^2$, which is about 2.8 times larger than that derived from a combined analysis of KamLAND and solar neutrino oscillation experiments. It is, however, compatible with a data regime to which the KamLAND analysis attributes a smaller probability. The experimental results imply that the neutrino mixing matrix violates unitarity by about 10%.

Exact Pair Production Rate for a Smooth Potential Step

We derive the exact rate of pair production of oppositely charged scalar particles by a smooth potential proportional to tanh kz in three dimensions. As a check we recover from this the known results for an infinitely sharp step as well as for a uniform electric field.

Modelling two-dimensional Crystals with Defects under Stress: Superelongation of Carbon Nanotubes at high Temperatures

We calculate analytically the phase diagram of a two-dimensional square crystal and its wrapped version with defects under external homogeneous stress as a function of temperature using a simple elastic lattice model that allows for defect formation. The temperature dependence turns out to be very weak. The results are relevant for recent stress experiments on carbon nanotubes. Under increasing stress, we find a crossover regime which we identify with a cracking transition that is almost independent of temperature. Furthermore, we find an almost stress-independent melting point. In addition, we derive an enhanced ductility with relative strains before cracking between 200-400%, in agreement with carbon nanotube experiments. The specific values depend on the Poisson ratio and the angle between the external force and the crystal axes. We give arguments that the results for carbon nanotubes are not much different to the wrapped square crystal.

Lindemann Parameters for solid Membranes focused on Carbon Nanotubes

Temperature fluctuations in the normal direction of planar crystals such as graphene are quite violent and may be expected to influence strongly their melting properties. In particular, they will modify the Lindemann melting criterium. We calculate this modification in a self-consistent Born approximation. The result is applied to graphene and its wrapped version represented by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). It is found that the out-of-plane fluctuations dominate over the in-plane fluctuations. This makes strong restrictions to possible Lindemann parameters. Astonishing we find that these large out-of-plane fluctuations have only a small influence upon the melting temperature.

Phase Diagram of Vortices in High-T_c Superconductors with a Melting Line in the deep H_{c2} Region

We use a simple elastic Hamiltonian for the vortex lattice in a weak impurity background which includes defects in the form of integer-valued fields to calculate the free energy of a vortex lattice in the deep H_{c2} region. The phase diagram in this regime is obtained by applying the variational approach of M{é}zard and Parisi developed for random manifolds. We find a first-order line between the Bragg-glass and vortex-glass phase as a continuation of the melting line. In the liquid phase, we obtain an almost vertical third-order glass transition line near the critical temperature in the H-T plane. Furthermore, we find an almost vertical second-order phase transition line in the Bragg-glass as well as the vortex-glass phases which crosses the first-order Bragg-glass, vortex-glass transition line. We calculate the jump of the temperature derivate of the induction field across this second-order line as well as the entropy and magnetic field jumps across the first-order line.
