Subwavelength and microstructured planar THz waveguides, theory and experiment

Planar dielectric subwavelength waveguides are proposed as waveguides for THz radiation. The waveguide porous design maximizes the fraction of power guided in the air to avoid the complexity that all the materials are highly absorbent in the THz region. Convenient access to the mode region makes them also useful for sensing of biological and chemical specimens in the THz region.

Rapidity dependence of deuteron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We have measured the distributions of protons and deuterons produced in high energy heavy ion Au+Au collisions at RHIC over a very wide range of transverse and longitudinal momentum. Near mid-rapidity we have also measured the distribution of anti-protons and anti-deuterons. We present our results in the context of coalescence models. In particular we extract the "volume of homogeneity" and the average phase-space density for protons and anti-protons. Near central rapidity the coalescence parameter $B_2(p_T)$ and the space averaged phase-space density $ (p_T)$ are very similar for both protons and anti-protons. For protons we see little variation of either $B_2(p_T)$ or the space averaged phase-space density as the rapidity increases from 0 to 3. However both these quantities depend strongly on $p_T$ at all rapidities. These results are in contrast to lower energy data where the proton and anti-proton phase-space densities are different at $y$=0 and both $B_2$ and $f$ depend strongly on rapidity.

Evolution of non-thermal emission from shell associated with AGN jets

We explore the evolution of the emissions by accelerated electrons in shocked shells driven by jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Focusing on powerful sources which host luminous quasars, we evaluated the broadband emission spectra by properly taking into account adiabatic and radiative cooling effects on the electron distribution. The synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton (IC) scattering of various photons that are mainly produced in the accretion disc and dusty torus are considered as radiation processes. We show that the resultant radiation is dominated by the IC emission for compact sources (< 10kpc), whereas the synchrotron radiation is more important for larger sources. We also compare the shell emissions with those expected from the lobe under the assumption that a fractions of the energy deposited in the shell and lobe carried by the non-thermal electrons are $ε_e \sim 0.01$ and $ε_{e, lobe} \sim 1$, respectively. Then, we find that the shell emissions are brighter than the lobe ones at infra-red and optical bands when the source size is > 10kpc, and the IC emissions from the shell at > 10 GeV can be observed with the absence of contamination from the lobe irrespective of the source size. In particular, it is predicted that, for most powerful nearby sources ($L_j \sim 10^{47} ergs s^{-1}$), TeV gamma-rays produced via the IC emissions can be detected by the modern Cherenkov telescopes such as MAGIC, HESS and VERITAS.

Non-Thermal emissions from shocked shells driven by powerful AGN jets

We explore the emissions by accelerated electrons in shocked shells driven by jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Focusing on powerful sources which host luminous quasars, the synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton (IC) scattering of various photons that are mainly produced in the core are considered as radiation processes. We show that the radiative output is dominated by the IC emission for compact sources (< 30kpc), whereas the synchrotron radiation is more important for larger sources. It is predicted that, for powerful sources ($L_j \sim 10^{47} ergs s^{-1}$), GeV-TeV gamma-rays produced via the IC emissions can be detected by the Fermi satellite and modern Cherenkov telescopes such as MAGIC, HESS and VERITAS if the source is compact.

Potassium Abundances in Red Giants of Mildly to Very Metal-Poor Globular Clusters

A non-LTE analysis of K I resonance lines at 7664.91 and 7698.97 A was carried out for 15 red giants belonging to three globular clusters of different metallicity (M 4, M 13, and M 15) along with two reference early-K giants (rho Boo and alpha Boo), in order to check whether the K abundances are uniform within a cluster and to investigate the behavior of [K/Fe] ratio at the relevant metallicity range of -2.5 <[Fe/H] < -1. We confirmed that [K/H] (as well as [Fe/H]) is almost homogeneous within each cluster to a precision of < ~0.1 dex, though dubiously large deviations are exceptionally seen for two peculiar stars showing signs of considerably increased turbulence in the upper atmosphere. The resulting [K/Fe] ratios are mildly supersolar by a few tenths of dex for three clusters, tending to gradually increase from ~+0.1-0.2 at [Fe/H] ~-1 to ~+0.3 at [Fe/H] ~ -2.5. This result connects reasonably well with the [K/Fe] trend of disk stars (-1 < [Fe/H]) and that of extremely metal-poor stars (-4 <[Fe/H] < -2.5). That is, [K/Fe] appears to continue a gradual increase from [Fe/H]~0 toward a lower metallicity regime down to [Fe/H]~-3, where a broad maximum of [K/Fe]~+0.3-0.4 is attained, possibly followed by a slight downturn at [Fe/H]<~-3.

New prediction of extragalactic GeV gamma-ray emission from radio lobes of young AGN jets

We present a new prediction of GeV $γ$-ray emission from radio lobes of young AGN jets. In the previous work of Kino et al. (2007), MeV $γ$-ray bremsstrahlung emission was predicted from young cocoons/radio-lobes in the regime of no coolings. In this study, we include cooling effects of bremsstrahlung emission and adiabatic loss. With the initial conditions determined by observed young radio lobes, we solve a set of equations describing the expanding lobe evolution. Then we find that the lobes initially have electron temperature of $\sim$GeV, and they cool down to $\sim$MeV by the adiabatic loss. Correspondingly, the lobes initially yield bright bremsstrahlung luminosity in $\sim$GeV range and they fade out. We estimate these $γ$-ray emissions and show that nearby young radio lobes could be detected with Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.

High energy emission from AGN cocoons in clusters of galaxies

Gamma-ray emission from cocoons of young radio galaxies is predicted. Considering the process of adiabatic injection of the shock dissipation energy and mass of the relativistic jet into the cocoon, we find that the thermal electron temperature of the cocoon is typically predicted to be of the order of $\sim$ MeV, and is determined only by the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet. Together with the time-dependent dynamics of the cocoon expansion, we find that young cocoons can yield thermal Bremsstrahlung emissions at energies $\sim$MeV. Hotter cocoons (i.e., GeV) for younger sources are also discussed.

The estimate of kinetic powers of jets in FRII radio galaxies: existence of invisible components?

We investigate the total kinetic powers (L_j) and ages (t_age) of powerful jets in FR II radio galaxies by comparison of the dynamical model of expanding cocoons with observations. We select four FR II radio sources (Cygnus A, 3C 223, 3C 284, and 3C 219), for which the mass-density profiles of intracluster medium (ICM) are known in the literature. It is found that large fractions > 0.02 - 0.7 of the Eddington luminosity (L_Edd) are carried away as a kinetic power of jet. The upper limit of estimated 2 L_j / L_Edd are larger than unity (< 10) for some sources, suggesting a possibility of super-Eddington mass accretions. As a consequence of the large powers, we also find that the total energy stored in the cocoon (E_c) exceeds the energy derived from the minimum energy condition for the energy of radiating non-thermal electrons and magnetic fields (E_min): 4< E_c /E_min <310. This implies that most of the energy in cocoon is carried by invisible components such as thermal leptons (electron and positron) and/or protons.

Large Kinetic Power in FRII Radio Jets

We investigate the total kinetic powers (L_{j}) and ages (t_{age}) of powerful jets of four FR II radio sources (Cygnus A, 3C 223, 3C 284, and 3C 219) by the detail comparison of the dynamical model of expanding cocoons with observed ones. It is found that these sources have quite large kinetic powers with the ratio of L_{j} to the Eddington luminosity (L_{Edd}) resides in $0.02 <L_{j}/L_{Edd} <10$. Reflecting the large kinetic powers, we also find that the total energy stored in the cocoon (E_{c}) exceed the energy derived from the minimum energy condition (E_{min}): $2< E_{c}/E_{min} <160$. This implies that a large amount of kinetic power is carried by invisible components such as thermal leptons (electron and positron) and/or protons.

Extragalactic MeV gamma-ray emission from cocoons of young radio galaxies

Strong $γ$-ray emission from cocoons of young radio galaxies is newly predicted. Considering the process of adiabatic injection of the shock dissipation energy and mass of the relativistic jet in active nuclei (AGNs) into the cocoon, while assuming thermalizing electron plasma interactions, we find that the thermal electron temperature of the cocoon is typically predicted in $\sim$MeV, which is determined only by the bulk Lorentz factor of the relativistic jet. Together with the time-dependent dynamics of the cocoon expansion, we find that young cocoons can yield thermal bremsstrahlung emissions at energies $\sim$ MeV.

The performance of thin NaI(Tl) scintillator plate for dark matter search

A thin (0.05cm) and wide area (5cmX5cm) NaI(Tl) scintillator was developed. The performance of the thin NaI(Tl) plate, energy resolution, single photoelectron energy and position sensitivity were tested. An excellent energy resolution of 20% (FWHM) at 60keV was obtained. The single photoelectron energy was calculated to be approximately 0.42 0.02keV. Position information in the 5cmx5cm area of the detector was also obtained by analyzing the ratio of the number of photons collected at opposite ends of the detector. The position resolution was obtained to be 1cm (FWHM) in the 5cmx5cm area.

Rapidity dependence of high p_T suppression at sqrt{s_{NN}}=62.4{GeV}

We present measurements of charged hadron p_T spectra from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(snn)=62.4 GeV for pseudorapidities eta=0, eta=1 and eta=3.2. Around midrapidity (eta=0, eta=1) we find nuclear modification factors at levels suggesting a smaller degree of high p_T suppression than in the same reaction at higher energy sqrt(snn)=200 GeV. At the high pseudorapidity, eta=3.2, where nuclear modification factors cannot be constructed due to the lack of p+p reference data, we find a significant reduction of R_{CP} (central to peripheral ratio) as compared to midrapidity.

Superconducting Fluctuations and the Reduced Dimensionality of the Organic Superconductor $κ$- (BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$ as Observed through Measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen Effect

We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen (DHVA) effect and AC susceptibility in the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$. The amplitude of the DHVA oscillations is attenuated over a wide field range above the irreversibility line, B_irr(B), below which a rigid flux lattice is formed. Thus the DHVA effect provides a unique probe of the superconducting fluctuations at high fields in this material. We compare our measurements with other determinations of the superconducting phase diagram of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$.
