A New Low $Q^2$ Measurement of the Proton's $g_1$ Spin Structure Function from Longitudinal & Transverse Polarized Data

The proton's spin structure has proven to be far more complicated than was originally believed, and has been the subject of a number of experimental investigations. %Early measurements of the proton's spin structure function $g_1$ showed that the proton does not solely derive its spin from the spins of its quarks, starting the `proton spin crisis'. Of particular interest are the spin structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$, which can be used to generate moments to directly compare experimental results to Chiral Perturbation Theory and other theories of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The proton's $g_1$ structure function has been the subject of two other recent low momentum transfer experiments, but there are currently no published low momentum transfer measurements which collected data on the proton structure functions using both a longitudinally-polarized and a transversely-polarized target at the same kinematics. In this paper, we present the longitudinally polarized results of the Jefferson Lab E08-027 experiment, along with linked moments which combine this new result with the previously published transversely-polarized data from the same experiment. These results provide a proton $g_1$ extraction measured with very high precision across the resonance region, and provide new information on the value of $g_1$ dependent sum rules and moments.

Parenclitic hypergraphs and their application in personalized cancer therapy

Understanding the differences between individual instances of the same complex system remains a central challenge, particularly in biological contexts. Parenclitic networks constitute a suitable means to detect deviations in correlations with respect to reference populations. Here, we introduce parenclitic hypergraphs, a general framework for identifying anomalies in higher-order correlations across arbitrary interaction orders. After validating the method on synthetic datasets and benchmark ones, we apply it to patient-derived cancer organoids, capturing temporal changes in gene expression between healthy and cancerous tissues as the disease progresses. Our approach not only reproduces known oncogenic signatures, but also reveals a previously unrecognized candidate therapeutic target. Since organoids are generated from individual patients, our method provides, for the first time, a viable protocol for personalized cancer therapy based on higher-order correlation patterns. These findings offer a novel, systems-level strategy for precision oncology grounded in complex systems theory.

First Gamma-Ray Burst Observations with SVOM

Following its launch on 22 June 2024, the Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) successfully completed its flight acceptance, commissioning, and scientific validation phases in early 2025, during which several tens of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) were detected onboard. Three quarters of these events have also been detected by other satellites, and a quarter are SVOM-only GRBs. In this article, we describe these early GRB observations, with a first description of the SVOM GRB sample that is emerging, and of the level of characterisation already achieved, and with a focus on a few events of particular interest. These early results are very encouraging regarding SVOM's ability to detect and fully characterise (including prompt emission, afterglow and distance) a wide range of GRBs (classical long GRBs, short GRBs, X-Ray Flashes, etc.) and to enable the use of these extreme high-energy transients as probes of the distant Universe.

The transitional Type Ibn/IIn SN 2022pda, with pre-explosion outbursts and a double-peaked light curve

We report the results of a photometric and spectroscopic follow-up campaign of the unusual interacting supernova (SN) 2022pda. Precursor variability lasting $\sim 100$ days is observed before the explosion. The SN light curve has a double peak shape. It reached a first maximum of $M_{\rm{r}} = -19.6 \pm 0.2$\,mag, followed by an initial two-month decline and a second, broad peak lasting about six months. The early spectra show a blue continuum with dominant H and He emission lines. A high-resolution pre-maximum spectrum shows that the profile of the \Hei~$λ$5876 line consists of a moderately narrow ($\sim 1900$ \kms) P~Cygni absorption superposed on a broader ($\sim 3300$ \kms) component. In the blue region, several spectral features are identified, including C {\sc iii}/N {\sc iii}/O {\sc ii} blends. Two broad bumps at 4600--5200 Å, 6400--6800~Å regions reveal a complex profile, which are likely due to blends of H, He, and other emission lines. Late-time spectra are still dominated by prominent and broad H and He lines in emission. Shock-driven model fits to the bolometric light curve suggest that the SN is powered by interaction with a massive CSM with enhanced mass loss rates $\sim 5$ \msun yr$^{-1}$, expelled during two events occurred $\sim 1$ and $\sim 0.2$ years before the explosion. The overall SN evolution indicates that SN\,2022pda is a transitional event between a H-rich SN IIn (SN\,2009ip-like) and a He-rich SN Ibn. Our findings suggest that the progenitor was likely a Luminous Blue Variable transitioning towards a Wolf--Rayet stage.

Baryon-antibaryon photoproduction cross sections off the proton

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has observed $p\bar{p}$ and, for the first time, $Λ\barΛ$ and $p\barΛ$ photoproduction from a proton target at photon energies up to 11.6 GeV. The angular distributions are forward peaked for all produced pairs, consistent with Regge-like $t$-channel exchange. Asymmetric wide-angle anti-baryon distributions show the presence of additional processes. In a phenomenological model, we find consistency with a double $t$-channel exchange process where anti-baryons are created only at the middle vertex. The model matches all observed distributions with a small number of free parameters. In the hyperon channels, we observe a clear distinction between photoproduction of the $Λ\barΛ$ and $p\barΛ$ systems but general similarity to the $p\bar{p}$ system. We report both total cross sections and cross sections differential with respect to momentum transfer and the invariant masses of the created particle pairs. No narrow resonant structures were found in these reaction channels. The suppression of $s\bar{s}$ quark pairs relative to $d\bar{d}$ quark pairs is similar to what has been seen in other reactions.

Improved measurement of the branching fraction of $D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ$

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data with an integrated luminosity of $7.33~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the branching fraction of the leptonic decay $D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ$ is measured to be $(0.5294\pm0.0108_{\rm stat}\pm0.0085_{\rm syst})$\%. Based on this, the product of the $D_s^+$ decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$ and the magnitude of the $c\to s$ quark mixing matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined to be $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=241.8\pm2.5_{\rm stat}\pm2.2_{\rm syst}~\mathrm{MeV}$. Using the value of $|V_{cs}|$ given by the global standard model fit, $f_{D_s^+}$ is found to be $248.4\pm2.5_{\rm stat}\pm2.2_{\rm syst}$\,MeV. Alternatively, using the value of $f_{D_s^+}$ from a recent lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation, $|V_{cs}|$ is determined to be $0.968\pm0.010_{\rm stat}\pm0.009_{\rm syst}$.

An energetic dirty fireball detected in soft X-rays

The collapse of massive stars drives explosions that power relativistic fireballs. If only a small amount of matter is entrained, such clean fireballs can expand with Lorentz factors $Γ> 100$, accounting for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It has been hypothesized that energetic explosions with more baryon contamination, dubbed ``dirty fireballs'', may exist in nature, but they have not been observed. Here we report the observation of an extragalactic fast X-ray transient, EP241113a, detected by Einstein Probe. Compared to GRBs, it has a similar isotropic energy of $1.4\times 10^{51}$ erg, but significantly lower spectral peak energy. Theoretical modeling of its early X-ray afterglow suggests a relativistic jet with a low Lorentz factor of $Γ\sim 20$ aligned close to the line-of-sight, signifying the prototype of a dirty fireball.

Accurate Quantization for Gait Representation Learning

Existing deep learning methods have made significant progress in gait representation learning. Quantization can facilitate the application of gait models as a model-agnostic general compression technique. Typically, appearance-based models binarize inputs into silhouette sequences. However, mainstream quantization methods prioritize minimizing task loss over quantization error, which is detrimental to gait representation learning with binarized inputs. To address this, we propose a differentiable soft quantizer, which better simulates the gradient of the round function during backpropagation. This enables the network to learn from subtle input perturbations. However, our theoretical analysis and empirical studies reveal that directly applying the soft quantizer can hinder network convergence. We addressed this issue by adopting a two-stage training strategy, introducing a soft quantizer during the fine-tuning phase. However, in the first stage of training, we observed a significant change in the output distribution of different samples in the feature space compared to the full-precision network. It is this change that led to a loss in performance. Based on this, we propose an Inter-class Distance-guided Calibration (IDC) strategy to preserve the relative distance between the embeddings of samples with different labels. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach, demonstrating state-of-the-art accuracy across various settings and datasets.

Study of the $f_{0}(980)$ and $f_{0}(500)$ Scalar Mesons through the Decay $D_{s}^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} e^{+} ν_{e}$

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33~${\rm fb^{-1}}$ recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~${\rm GeV}$, we present an analysis of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to π^{+}π^{-} e^{+}ν_{e}$, where the $D_s^+$ is produced via the process $e^+e^- \to D_{s}^{*\pm}D_{s}^{\mp}$. We observe the $f_{0}(980)$ in the $π^+π^-$ system and the branching fraction of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ with $f_0(980)\toπ^+π^-$ measured to be $(1.72 \pm 0.13_{\rm stat} \pm 0.10_{\rm syst}) \times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The dynamics of the $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ decay are studied with the simple pole parametrization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatté formula describing the $f_0(980)$ in the differential decay rate, and the product of the form factor $f^{f_0}_{+}(0)$ and the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined for the first time to be $f^{f_0}_+(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504\pm0.017_{\rm stat}\pm0.035_{\rm syst}$. Furthermore, the decay $D^+_s\to f_0(500) e^+ν_e$ is searched for the first time but no signal is found. The upper limit on the branching fraction of $D^+_s\to f_0(500) e^+ν_e,~f_0(500)\toπ^+π^-$ decay is set to be $3.3 \times 10^{-4}$ at 90\% confidence level.

Near-Threshold J/$ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ Photoproduction and the Gluonic Gravitational Form Factors of the Proton

We report on the measurement of the two-dimensional differential cross section for near-threshold J/$ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ photoproduction from the J/$ψ$-007 experiment in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. Our results agree with the previously published J/$ψ\to e^+e^-$ results. We extract the integrated photoproduction cross section and find no evidence for open-charm contributions. A combined analysis of both decay channels following a Holographic QCD approach yields improved experimental constraints on the gluonic gravitational form factor $\mathcal{C}_g(t)$. Our results agree with recent lattice QCD calculations and we obtain $\mathcal{C}_g(t)$ with a comparable statistical precision to lattice QCD. Our results support a spatial picture where gluons dominate at larger radii with a confining inward pressure. This work provides new input for exploring the mechanical properties of gluons inside the proton.

The New Status Qvo? SN 2021qvo is Another 2003fg-like Type Ia Supernova with a Rising Light-Curve Bump

In recent years, multiple Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have been observed with ''bumps'' in their rising light curves shortly after explosion. Here, we present SN 2021qvo: a SN Ia that exhibits a clear early bump in photometry obtained by the Young Supernova Experiment. Photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2021qvo show that it has a broader light curve, higher peak luminosity, shallower Si II $λ$5972 pseudo-equivalent width, and lower ejecta velocities than normal SNe Ia, which are all consistent with the characteristics of the 2003fg-like (often called ''super-Chandrasekhar") SN subtype. Including SN 2021qvo, just four known 2003fg-like SNe Ia have sufficient pre-peak data to reveal a rising light-curve bump, and all four have bump detections. Host-galaxy analysis reveals that SN 2021qvo exploded in a low-mass galaxy ${\rm log}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}) = 7.83^{+0.17}_{-0.24}$, also consistent with other members of this class. The current leading early-bump 2003fg-like SN Ia progenitor model involves an interaction between the circumstellar material (CSM) and the SN ejecta. We test the validity of this theory by modeling the early bump and subsequent light-curve evolution of SN 2021qvo with the Modular Open Source Fitter for Transients. We find that the bump can be modeled with a best-fit CSM mass in the range $M_\mathrm{CSM}=3.31-8.51 \times 10^{-3} M_\odot$. SN 2021qvo adds to the small but growing number of 2003fg-like SNe Ia with rising light-curve bumps; as the number of these SNe Ia with CSM estimates continues to grow, population-level inferences about the CSM distribution will be able to constrain the progenitor scenario for these SNe Ia.

Study of $η\rightarrowπ^+π^-l^+l^-$

Using a sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector, we analyze the decays $η\rightarrowπ^+π^-l^+l^-$ ($l=e$ or $μ$) via the process $J/ψ\rightarrowγη$. The branching fraction of $η\rightarrowπ^+π^-e^+e^-$ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(η\rightarrowπ^+π^-e^+e^-)=(3.07\pm0.12_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.19_{\rm{syst.}}) \times10^{-4}$. No signal events are observed for the $η\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay, leading to an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(η\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-})<4.0\times10^{-7}$ at the 90\% confidence level. Furthermore, the $CP$-violation asymmetry parameter is found to be $\mathcal{A}_{CP}(η\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-}e^{+}e^{-})=(-4.04\pm4.69_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.14_{\rm{syst.}})\%$, showing no evidence of $CP$-violation with current statistics. Additionally, we extract the transition form factor from the decay amplitude of $η\rightarrowπ^+π^-e^+e^-$. Finally, axion-like particles are searched for via the decay $η\rightarrowπ^+π^-a, a\rightarrow e^+e^-$, and upper limits on this branching fraction relative to that of $η\rightarrowπ^+π^-e^+e^-$ are presented as a function of the axion-like particle mass in the range $5-200\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}$.

Study of $\bar{K}^*(892)^0 η$ and $K_S^0 a_0(980)^0$ in the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0}π^0η$ decay

We perform an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 η$ and measure its absolute branching fraction to be $(1.016 \pm 0.013_{\text {stat.}} \pm 0.014_{\text {syst.}})\%$. The analysis utilizes $20.3~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector. The branching fraction of the intermediate process $D^0 \rightarrow \bar{K}^*(892)^0 η$ is determined to be $(0.73 \pm 0.05_{\text {stat.}} \pm 0.03_{\text {syst.}}) \%$, which is $5 σ$ smaller than the result measured in $D^0 \to K^- π^+ η$ by the Belle experiment. As a result, the magnitudes of the $W$-exchange and QCD-penguin exchange amplitudes are found to be less than half of their current estimations. Furthermore, we determine $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to K_S^0a_0(980)^0, a_0(980)^0\to π^0η) = (9.88\pm 0.37_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.42_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3}$, with a precision improved by a factor of 4.5 compared to the world average.

Evidence for the semileptonic decays $Λ_c^{+} \to Σ^{\pm} π^{\mp} e^+ ν_e$

Using $4.5\, fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between $4.600$ and $4.699\,GeV$, we search for the semileptonic decays $Λ_c^{+} \to Σ^{+} π^{-} e^+ ν_e$ and $Λ_c^{+} \to Σ^{-} π^{+} e^+ ν_e$ for the first time. Assuming their branching fractions are equal under isospin symmetry, evidence for $Λ_c^{+} \to Σ^{\pm} π^{\mp} e^+ ν_e$ is reported with a significance of $3.6σ$. The corresponding branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^{+} \to Σ^\pmπ^\mp e^+ν_e) = (7.7^{+2.5}_{-2.3_{\rm stat.}}\pm1.3_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-4}$, which is consistent with quark model predictions within two standard deviations.

Observation of the singly Cabibbo suppressed decay $D^0\to b_1(1235)^- e^+ν_e$ and evidence for $D^+\to b_1(1235)^0 e^+ν_e$

By analyzing a data sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions with center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=3.773$~GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $7.9~\rm {fb}^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we study semileptonic decays of the $D^{0(+)}$ mesons into the axial-vector meson $b_1(1235)$ via the decay $b_1(1235)\to ωπ$. The decay $D^0\to b_1(1235)^-e^{+}ν_{e}$ is observed with a significance of 5.2$σ$ after considering systematic uncertainty, while evidence for the decay $D^+\to b_1(1235)^0 e^+ν_e$ is obtained with a 3.1$σ$ significance. The product branching fractions are determined to be ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to b_{1}(1235)^-e^{+}ν_{e})\times {\mathcal B} (b_1(1235)^-\to ωπ^-) = (0.72\pm0.18^{+0.06}_{-0.08})\times10^{-4}$ and ${\mathcal B}(D^+\to b_{1}(1235)^0e^{+}ν_{e})\times {\mathcal B} (b_1(1235)^0~\to ωπ^0) = (1.16\pm0.44\pm0.16)\times10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The ratio of their partial decay widths is determined to be $\frac{Γ(D^0\to b_{1}(1235)^-e^{+}ν_{e})}{2Γ(D^+\to b_{1}(1235)^0e^{+}ν_{e})}=0.78\pm0.19^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$, which is consistent with unity, predicted by isospin invariance, within uncertainties.

Normal or transitional? The evolution and properties of two type Ia supernovae in the Virgo cluster

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are among the most precise cosmological distance indicators used to study the expansion history of the Universe. The vast increase of SN Ia data due to large-scale astrophysical surveys has led to the discovery of a wide variety of SN Ia sub-classes, such as transitional and fast-declining SNe Ia. However, their distinct photometric and spectroscopic properties differentiate them from the population of normal SNe Ia such that their use as cosmological tools remains challenged. Here, we present a high-cadenced photometric and spectroscopic dataset of two SNe Ia, SNe 2020ue and 2020nlb, which were discovered in the nearby Virgo cluster of galaxies. Our study shows that SN 2020nlb is a normal SN Ia whose unusually red color is intrinsic, arising from a lower photospheric temperature rather than interstellar reddening, providing clear evidence that color diversity among normal SNe Ia can have a physical origin. In contrast, SN 2020ue has photometric properties, such as color evolution and light-curve decay rate, similar to those of transitional SNe, spectroscopically it is more aligned with normal SNe Ia. This is evident from spectroscopic indicators such as the pseudo-equivalent width of \ion{Si}{II} lines. Thus, such SNe Ia that are photometrically at the edge of the standard normal SNe Ia range may be missed in cosmological SNe Ia samples. Our results highlight that spectroscopic analysis of SNe Ia around peak brightness is crucial for identifying intrinsic color variations and constructing a more complete and physically homogeneous SN Ia sample for precision cosmology.
