Unveiling the Semimetallic Nature of 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ by Doping its Charge Density Wave

The semimetallic or semiconducting nature of the transition metal dichalcogenide 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ remains under debate after many decades mainly due to the fluctuating nature of its 2 $\times$ 2 $\times$ 2 charge-density-wave (CDW) phase at room-temperature. In this letter, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we unambiguously demonstrate that the 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ normal state is semimetallic with an electron-hole band overlap of $\sim$110 meV by probing the low-energy electronic states of the perturbed CDW phase strongly doped by alkali atoms. Our study not only closes a long-standing debate but also supports the central role of the Fermi surface for driving the CDW and superconducting instabilities in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$.

Recent Results from Polycrystalline CVD Diamond Detectors

Diamond is a material in use at many nuclear and high energy facilities due to its inherent radiation tolerance and ease of use. We have characterized detectors based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond before and after proton irradiation. We present preliminary results of the spatial resolution of unirradiated and irradiated CVD diamond strip sensors. In addition, we measured the pulse height versus particle rate of unirradiated and irradiated polycrystalline CVD (pCVD) diamond pad detectors up to a particle flux of $20\,\mathrm{MHz/cm^2}$ and a fluence up to $4 \times 10^{15}\,n/\mathrm{cm^2}$.

Semimetal-to-semiconductor transition and charge-density-wave melting in $1T$-TiSe$_{2-x}$S$_x$ single crystals

The transition metal dichalcogenide $1T$-TiSe$_2$ is a quasi-two-dimensional layered material with a phase transition towards a commensurate charge density wave (CDW) at a critical temperature T$_{c}\approx 200$K. The relationship between the origin of the CDW instability and the semimetallic or semiconducting character of the normal state, i.e., with the non-reconstructed Fermi surface topology, remains elusive. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we investigate $1T$-TiSe$_{2-x}$S$_x$ single crystals. Using STM, we first show that the long-range phase coherent CDW state is stable against S substitutions with concentrations at least up to $x=0.34$. The ARPES measurements then reveal a slow but continuous decrease of the overlap between the electron and hole ($e$-$h$) bands of the semimetallic normal-state well reproduced by DFT and related to slight reductions of both the CDW order parameter and $T_c$. Our DFT calculations further predict a semimetal-to-semiconductor transition of the normal state at a higher critical S concentration of $x_c$=0.9 $\pm$0.1, that coincides with a melted CDW state in TiSeS as measured with STM. Finally, we rationalize the $x$-dependence of the $e$-$h$ band overlap in terms of isovalent substitution-induced competing chemical pressure and charge localization effects. Our study highlights the key role of the $e$-$h$ band overlap for the CDW instability.

Phase Separation in the Vicinity of Fermi Surface Hot Spots

Spatially inhomogeneous electronic states are expected to be key ingredients for the emergence of superconducting phases in quantum materials hosting charge-density-waves (CDWs). Prototypical materials are transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and among them, 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ exhibiting intertwined CDW and superconducting states under Cu intercalation, pressure or electrical gating. Although it has been recently proposed that the emergence of superconductivity relates to CDW fluctuations and the development of spatial inhomogeneities in the CDW order, the fundamental mechanism underlying such a phase separation (PS) is still missing. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we report on the phase diagram of the CDW in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ as a function of Ti self-doping, an overlooked degree of freedom inducing CDW texturing. We find an intrinsic tendency towards electronic PS in the vicinity of Fermi surface (FS) "hot spots", i.e. locations with band crossings close to, but not at the Fermi level. We therefore demonstrate an intimate relationship between the FS topology and the emergence of spatially textured electronic phases which is expected to be generalizable to many doped CDW compounds.

A quasi-probability for the arrival time problem with links to backflow and the Leggett-Garg inequalities

The arrival time problem for the free particle in one dimension may be formulated as the problem of determining a joint probability for the particle being found on opposite sides of the $x$-axis at two different times. We explore this problem using a two-time quasi-probability linear in the projection operators, a natural counterpart of the corresponding classical problem. We show that it can be measured either indirectly, by measuring its moments in different experiments, or directly, in a single experiment using a pair of sequential measurements in which the first measurement is weak (or more generally, ambiguous). We argue that when positive, it corresponds to a measurement-independent arrival time probability. For small time intervals it coincides approximately with the time-averaged current, in agreement with semiclassical expectations. The quasi-probability can be negative and we exhibit a number of situations in which this is the case. We interpret these situations as the presence of `quantumness', in which the arrival time probability is not properly defined in a measurement-independent manner. Backflow states, in which the current flows in the direction opposite to the momentum, are shown to provide an interesting class of examples such situations. We also show that the quasi-probability is closely linked to a set of two-time Leggett-Garg inequalities, which test for macroscopic realism.

Selective probing of hidden spin-polarized states in inversion-symmetric bulk MoS2

Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to reveal that a large spin polarization is observable in the bulk centrosymmetric transition metal dichalcogenide MoS2. It is found that the measured spin polarization can be reversed by changing the handedness of incident circularly-polarized light. Calculations based on a three-step model of photoemission show that the valley and layer-locked spin-polarized electronic states can be selectively addressed by circularly-polarized light, therefore providing a novel route to probe these hidden spin-polarized states in inversion-symmetric systems as predicted by Zhang et al. [Nature Physics 10, 387 (2014)].

Production of deuterium, tritium, and $^3$He in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV at the CERN SPS

Production of $d$, $t$, and $^3$He nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was studied at five collision energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence approach. The coalescence parameters $B_2$ and $B_3$, as well as coalescence radii for $d$ and $^3$He were determined as a function of transverse mass at all energies.

Short-range phase coherence and origin of the 1T-TiSe2 charge density wave

The impact of variable Ti self-doping on the 1T-TiSe2 charge density wave (CDW) is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. Supported by density functional theory we show that agglomeration of intercalated-Ti atoms acts as preferential nucleation centers for the CDW that breaks up in phaseshifted CDW domains whose size directly depends on the intercalated-Ti concentration and which are separated by atomically-sharp phase boundaries. The close relationship between the diminution of the CDW domain size and the disappearance of the anomalous peak in the temperature dependent resistivity allows to draw a coherent picture of the 1T-TiSe2 CDW phase transition and its relation to excitons.

Measurement of event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations using strongly intensive measures $\Delta[P_T, N]$ and $\Sigma[P_T, N]$ in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV/c, as well as in systems of different size ($p+p$, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158$A$ GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure $\Phi_{p_T}$ by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations $\Delta[P_T, N]$ and $\Sigma[P_T, N]$. In the explored kinematic region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size dependence is observed for both $\Delta[P_T, N]$ and $\Sigma[P_T, N]$, with the largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The results are compared with NA61/SHINE measurements in $p+p$ collisions, as well as with predictions of the UrQMD and EPOS models.

Excitonic Josephson effect in double-layer graphene junctions

We show that double-layer graphene (DLG), where an external potential induces an charge-imbalance between $n$- and $p$-type layers, is a promising candidate to realize an exciton condensate in equilibrium. To prove this phenomenon experimentally, we suggest to couple two DLG systems, separated by a thin insulating barrier, and measure the excitonic Josephson effect. For this purpose we calculate the ac and dc Josephson currents induced by tunneling excitons and show that the former only occurs when the gate potentials of the DLG systems differ, irrespective of the phase relationship of their excitonic order parameters. A dc Josephson current develops if a finite order-parameter phase difference exists between two coupled DLG systems with identical gate potentials.

Impact of Electron-Hole Correlations on the 1T-TiSe2 Electronic Structure

Several experiments have been performed on 1T-TiSe2 in order to identify whether the electronic structure is semimetallic or semiconducting without reaching a consensus. In this paper, we theoretically study the impact of electron-hole and electron-phonon correlations on the bare semimetallic and semiconducting electronic structure. The resulting electron spectral functions provide a direct comparison of both cases and demonstrate that 1T-TiSe2 is of predominant semiconducting character with some spectral weight crossing the Fermi level.

Fate of the excitonic insulator in the presence of phonons

The influence of phonons on the formation of the excitonic insulator has hardly been analyzed so far. Recent experiments on $\rm Ta_2NiSe_5$, 1$T$-$\rm TiSe_2$, and $\rm TmSe_{0.45}Te_{0.55}$, being candidates for realizing the excitonic-insulator state, suggest, however, that the underlying lattice plays a significant role. Employing the Kadanoff-Baym approach we address this issue theoretically. We show that owing to the electron-phonon coupling a static lattice distortion may arise at the excitonic instability. Most importantly such a distortion will destroy the acoustic phase mode being present if the electron-hole pairing and condensation is exclusively driven by the Coulomb interaction. The absence of off-diagonal long-range order, when lattice degrees of freedom are involved, challenges that excitons in these materials form a superfluid condensate of Bose particles or Cooper pairs composed of electrons and holes.

Phase-space dependence of particle-ratio fluctuations in Pb+Pb collisions from 20A to 158A GeV beam energy

A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows to unfold the moments of the unknown multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions ($\pi$) and electrons (e). Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure $\nu_{\text{\text{dyn}}}$[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of $\nu_{\text{dyn}}$ agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure $\sigma_{\text{dyn}}$. Moreover, $\nu_{\text{dyn}}$ was found to depend on the phase space coverage for [K,p] and [K,$\pi$] pairs. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au+Au collisions.

Chiral charge order in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$: importance of lattice degrees of freedom

We address the question of the origin of the recently discovered chiral property of the charge-density-wave phase in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ which so far lacks a microscopic understanding. We argue that the lattice degrees of freedom seems to be crucial for this novel phenomenon. We motivate a theoretical model that takes into account one valence and three conduction bands, a strongly screened Coulomb interaction between the electrons, as well as the coupling of the electrons to a transverse optical phonon mode. The Falicov-Kimball model extended in this way possesses a charge-density-wave state at low temperatures, which is accompanied by a periodic lattice distortion. The charge ordering is driven by a lattice deformation and electron-hole pairing (excitonic) instability in combination. We show that both electron-phonon interaction and phonon-phonon interaction must be taken into account at least up to quartic order in the lattice displacement to achieve a stable chiral charge order. The chiral property is exhibited in the ionic displacements. Furthermore, we provide the ground-state phase diagram of the model and give an estimate of the electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction constants for 1$T$-TiSe$_2$.

System-size and centrality dependence of charged kaon and pion production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and158A GeV beam energy

Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in semi-central C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra and total yields are determined as a function of centrality. The system-size and centrality dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy are derived from the data presented here and published data for C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158A GeV beam energy. At both energies a steep increase with centrality is observed for small systems followed by a weak rise or even saturation for higher centralities. This behavior is compared to calculations using transport models (UrQMD and HSD), a percolation model and the core-corona approach.

Inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5<y<4 and have been obtained by measuring the electron and muon pair decay channels, respectively. The integrated luminosities for the two channels are L^e_int=1.1 nb^-1 and L^mu_int=19.9 nb^-1, and the corresponding signal statistics are N_J/psi^e+e-=59 +/- 14 and N_J/psi^mu+mu-=1364 +/- 53. We present dsigma_J/psi/dy for the two rapidity regions under study and, for the forward-y range, d^2sigma_J/psi/dydp_t in the transverse momentum domain 0<p_t<8 GeV/c. The results are compared with previously published results at sqrt(s)=7 TeV and with theoretical calculations.

Proton -- Lambda Correlations in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV

The momentum correlation between protons and lambda particles emitted from central Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV was studied by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A clear enhancement is observed for small relative momenta (q_{inv} < 0.2 GeV). By fitting a theoretical model, which uses the strong interaction between the proton and the lambda in a given pair, to the measured data a value for the effective source size is deduced. Assuming a static Gaussian source distribution we derive an effective radius parameter of R_G = 3.02 \pm 0.20$(stat.)^{+0.44}_{-0.16}(syst.) fm.

Energy dependence of kaon-to-proton ratio fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 6.3 to 17.3 GeV

Kaons and protons carry large parts of two conserved quantities, strangeness and baryon number. It is argued that their correlation and thus also fluctuations are sensitive to conditions prevailing at the anticipated parton-hadron phase boundary. Fluctuations of the $(\mathrm{K}^+ + \mathrm{K}^-)/(\mathrm{p}+\bar{\mathrm{p}})$ and $\mathrm{K}^+/\mathrm{p}$ ratios have been measured for the first time by NA49 in central Pb+Pb collisions at 5 SPS energies between $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 6.3 GeV and 17.3 GeV. Both ratios exhibit a change of sign in $\sigma_{\mathrm{dyn}}$, a measure of non-statistical fluctuations, around $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8 GeV. Below this energy, $\sigma_{\mathrm{dyn}}$ is positive, indicating higher fluctuation compared to a mixed event background sample, while for higher energies, $\sigma_{\mathrm{dyn}}$ is negative, indicating correlated emission of kaons and protons. The results are compared to UrQMD calculations which which give a good description at the higher SPS energies, but fail to reproduce the transition to positive values.
