Input-Output Price Parity and Farm Profitability: A Strategic Perspective for Karnataka

Agricultural pricing policies are crucial for farm profitability and food security in India. This study analysed how input and output prices significantly influence the profitability of cereals in Karnataka, with the strategic support prices playing a crucial role in maintaining the price parity. The average annual TFP growth was 1.041 per cent. Rising input costs, particularly for human labour, led to reduced profitability for Jowar (6.12 per cent) and Ragi (4.89 per cent). The net effect was adverse for Jowar (-1.50 per cent) and Ragi (-0.86 per cent) due to rising input costs outpacing output prices. The study recommended increasing the MSP for Jowar (60 per cent) and Ragi (46.24 per cent) above the existing levels. A strategic price adjusted for changing input costs can stabilise farm incomes and promote sustainable production, enabling efficient pricing policies.

Lower and upper order of harmonic mappings

In this paper, we define both the upper and lower order of a sense-preserving harmonic mapping in $\mathbb{D}$. We generalize to the harmonic case some known results about holomorphic functions with positive lower order and we show some consequences of a function having finite upper order. In addition, we improve a related result in the case when there is equality in a known distortion theorem for harmonic mappings with finite upper order. Some examples are provided to illustrate the developed theory.

Non-adiabatic ponderomotive effects in photoemission from nanotips in intense mid-infrared laser fields

Transient near-fields around metallic nanotips drive many applications, including the generation of ultrafast electron pulses and their use in electron microscopy. We have investigated the electron emission from a gold nanotip driven by mid-infrared few-cycle laser pulses. We identify a low-energy peak in the kinetic energy spectrum and study its shift to higher energies with increasing laser intensities from $1.7$ to $3.7\cdot10^{11} \mathrm{W}/\mathrm{cm}^2$. The experimental observation of the upshift of the low-energy peak is compared to a simple model and numerical simulations, which show that the decay of the near-field on a nanometer scale results in non-adiabatic transfer of the ponderomotive potential to the kinetic energy of emitted electrons and in turn to a shift of the peak. We derive an analytic expression for the non-adiabatic ponderomotive shift, which, after the previously found quenching of the quiver motion, completes the understanding of the role of inhomogeneous fields in strong-field photoemission from nanostructures.

Half-lives of neutron-rich $^{128-130}$Cd

The $\beta$-decay half-lives of $^{128\text{--}130}$Cd have been measured with the newly commissioned GRIFFIN $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. The time structures of the most intense $\gamma$-rays emitted following the $\beta$-decay were used to determine the half-lives of $^{128}$Cd and $^{130}$Cd to be $T_{1/2}= 246.2(21)$ ms and $T_{1/2}= 126(4)$ ms, respectively. The half-lives of the 3/2$^+$ and 11/2$^-$ states of $^{129}$Cd were measured to be $T_{1/2}(3/2^+)= 157(8)$ ms and $T_{1/2}(11/2^-)= 147(3)$ ms. The half-lives of the Cd isotopes around the $N=82$ shell closure are an important ingredient in astrophysical simulations to derive the magnitude of the second $r$-process abundance peak in the $A\sim130$ region. Our new results are compared with recent literature values and theoretical calculations.

Observing the sky at extremely high energies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array: Status of the GCT project

The Cherenkov Telescope Array is the main global project of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy for the coming decades. Performance will be significantly improved relative to present instruments, allowing a new insight into the high-energy Universe [1]. The nominal CTA southern array will include a sub-array of seventy 4 m telescopes spread over a few square kilometers to study the sky at extremely high energies, with the opening of a new window in the multi-TeV energy range. The Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is one of the proposed telescope designs for that sub-array. The GCT prototype recorded its first Cherenkov light on sky in 2015. After an assessment phase in 2016, new observations have been performed successfully in 2017. The GCT collaboration plans to install its first telescopes and cameras on the CTA site in Chile in 2018-2019 and to contribute a number of telescopes to the subsequent CTA production phase.

In situ ore formation experiment: Amino acids and amino sugars trapped in artificial chimneys on deep-sea hydrothermal systems at Suiyo Seamount, Izu-Bonin Arc, Pacific Ocean

The present study reports on the bio-organic composition of a deep-sea venting hydrothermal system originating from arc volcanism; the origin of the particulates in hydrothermal fluids from the Suiyo Seamount in the southern Izu-Bonin (Ogasawara) Arc is discussed with regard to amino compounds. Chimney samples on deep-sea hydrothermal systems and core samples at Suiyo Seamount were determined for amino acids, and occasionally amino sugars. Two types of chimney samples were obtained from active hydrothermal systems by submersible vehicles: one was natural chimney (NC) on a hydrothermal natural vent; the other was artificial chimneys (AC), mainly formed by the growth and deposition of sulfide-rich particulate components in a Kuwabara-type in situ incubator (KI incubator). Total hydrolyzed amino acids (THAA) and hydrolyzed hexosamines (HA) in AC ranged from 10.7 nmol/g to 64.0 nmol/g and from 0 nmol/g to 8.1 nmol/g, respectively, while THAA in hydrothermally altered core samples ranged from 26.0 nmol/g to 107.4 nmol/g-rock. The THAA was thus of the same order of magnitude in AC and core samples. The representative biochemical indicator ratios of {\beta}-alanine/aspartic acid and {\gamma}-aminobutyric acid/glutamic acid were low. This is consistent with a large microbial population and labile subterranean biogenic organic compounds. A micro energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer ({\mu}EDX) was used to show that the formation of massive pyrite- and chalcopyrite-ores, the major matrixes of the natural chimney structures, were processed during hydrothermal activity. These data suggest that labile particulate organic matter (POM) and/or dissolved organic matter (DOM) from hydrothermal fluid were continuously trapped to form concentrated organic matter in a sulfide-rich matrix.

UWISH2 -- The UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H2

We present the goals and preliminary results of an unbiased, near-infrared, narrow-band imaging survey of the First Galactic Quadrant (10deg<l<65deg ; -1.3deg<b<+1.3deg). This area includes most of the Giant Molecular Clouds and massive star forming regions in the northern hemisphere. The survey is centred on the 1-0S(1) ro-vibrational line of H2, a proven tracer of hot, dense molecular gas in star-forming regions, around evolved stars, and in supernova remnants. The observations complement existing and upcoming photometric surveys (Spitzer-GLIMPSE, UKIDSS-GPS, JCMT-JPS, AKARI, Herschel Hi-GAL, etc.), though we probe a dynamically active component of star formation not covered by these broad-band surveys. Our narrow-band survey is currently more than 60% complete. The median seeing in our images is 0.73arcsec. The images have a 5sigma detection limit of point sources of K=18mag and the surface brightness limit is 10^-19Wm^-2arcsec^-2 when averaged over our typical seeing. Jets and outflows from both low and high mass Young Stellar Objects are revealed, as are new Planetary Nebulae and - via a comparison with earlier K-band observations acquired as part of the UKIDSS GPS - numerous variable stars. With their superior spatial resolution, the UWISH2 data also have the potential to reveal the true nature of many of the Extended Green Objects found in the GLIMPSE survey.
