The number of colorings of the middle layers of the Hamming cube

For an odd integer $n = 2d-1$, let $\mathcal B_d$ be the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_n$ induced by the two largest layers. In this paper, we describe the typical structure of proper $q$-colorings of $V(\mathcal B_d)$ and give asymptotics on the number of them. The proofs use various tools including information theory (entropy), Sapozhenko's graph container method and a recently developed method of M. Jenssen and W. Perkins that combines Sapozhenko's graph container lemma with the cluster expansion for polymer models from statistical physics.

Maximum entropy and integer partitions

We derive asymptotic formulas for the number of integer partitions with given sums of $j$th powers of the parts for $j$ belonging to a finite, non-empty set $J \subset \mathbb N$. The method we use is based on the `principle of maximum entropy' of Jaynes. This principle leads to an intuitive variational formula for the asymptotics of the logarithm of the number of constrained partitions as the solution to a convex optimization problem over real-valued functions.

Resilience of the Rank of Random Matrices

Let $M$ be an $n \times m$ matrix of independent Rademacher ($\pm 1$) random variables. It is well known that if $n \leq m$, then $M$ is of full rank with high probability. We show that this property is resilient to adversarial changes to $M$. More precisely, if $m \geq n + n^{1-\varepsilon/6}$, then even after changing the sign of $(1-\varepsilon)m/2$ entries, $M$ is still of full rank with high probability. Note that this is asymptotically best possible as one can easily make any two rows proportional with at most $m/2$ changes. Moreover, this theorem gives an asymptotic solution to a slightly weakened version of a conjecture made by Van Vu.

Super-logarithmic cliques in dense inhomogeneous random graphs

In the theory of dense graph limits, a graphon is a symmetric measurable function $W:[0,1]^2\to [0,1]$. Each graphon gives rise naturally to a random graph distribution, denoted $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$, that can be viewed as a generalization of the Erdős-Rényi random graph. Recently, Doležal, Hladký, and Máthé gave an asymptotic formula of order $\log n$ for the clique number of $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$ when $W$ is bounded away from 0 and 1. We show that if $W$ is allowed to approach 1 at a finite number of points, and displays a moderate rate of growth near these points, then the clique number of $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$ will be $Θ(\sqrt{n})$ almost surely. We also give a family of examples with clique number $Θ(n^α)$ for any $α\in(0,1)$, and some conditions under which the clique number of $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$ will be $o(\sqrt{n})$, $ω(\sqrt{n}),$ or $Ω(n^α)$ for $α\in(0,1)$.
