HealMed: Multilingual Evaluation of Large Language Models in Medicine

We present HealMed, an expert-reviewed benchmark for multilingual evaluation of large language models in medicine. HealMed contains 1,000 examples in each of nine languages, drawn from nine datasets and covering three task formats: MCQA, NLI and open-ended QA. The benchmark was developed over two years by 23 physicians and medical experts based across nine countries and regions. Each translation was evaluated and revised by two experts fluent in English and the corresponding target language. On HealMed, performance declined most in low-resource languages, although the size of the gap varied markedly across languages and models. The strongest proprietary models were the most stable across languages, whereas many open-source and medically specialized models showed larger and less consistent gaps. Medical specialization alone did not ensure multilingual robustness. Furthermore, expert revision could either raise or lower measured performance, indicating that translation quality materially affects cross-language evaluation results.

Super Phantoms: advanced models for testing medical imaging technologies

Phantoms are test objects used for initial testing and optimization of medical imaging techniques, but these rarely capture the complex properties of the tissue. Here we introduce super phantoms, that surpass standard phantoms being able to replicate complex anatomic and functional imaging properties of tissues and organs. These super phantoms can be computer models, inanimate physical objects, or ex-vivo organs. Testing on these super phantoms, will enable iterative improvements well before in-vivo studies, fostering innovation. We illustrate super phantom examples, address development challenges, and envision centralized facilities supporting multiple institutions in applying these models for medical advancements.

In situ ore formation experiment: Amino acids and amino sugars trapped in artificial chimneys on deep-sea hydrothermal systems at Suiyo Seamount, Izu-Bonin Arc, Pacific Ocean

The present study reports on the bio-organic composition of a deep-sea venting hydrothermal system originating from arc volcanism; the origin of the particulates in hydrothermal fluids from the Suiyo Seamount in the southern Izu-Bonin (Ogasawara) Arc is discussed with regard to amino compounds. Chimney samples on deep-sea hydrothermal systems and core samples at Suiyo Seamount were determined for amino acids, and occasionally amino sugars. Two types of chimney samples were obtained from active hydrothermal systems by submersible vehicles: one was natural chimney (NC) on a hydrothermal natural vent; the other was artificial chimneys (AC), mainly formed by the growth and deposition of sulfide-rich particulate components in a Kuwabara-type in situ incubator (KI incubator). Total hydrolyzed amino acids (THAA) and hydrolyzed hexosamines (HA) in AC ranged from 10.7 nmol/g to 64.0 nmol/g and from 0 nmol/g to 8.1 nmol/g, respectively, while THAA in hydrothermally altered core samples ranged from 26.0 nmol/g to 107.4 nmol/g-rock. The THAA was thus of the same order of magnitude in AC and core samples. The representative biochemical indicator ratios of β-alanine/aspartic acid and γ-aminobutyric acid/glutamic acid were low. This is consistent with a large microbial population and labile subterranean biogenic organic compounds. A micro energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (μEDX) was used to show that the formation of massive pyrite- and chalcopyrite-ores, the major matrixes of the natural chimney structures, were processed during hydrothermal activity. These data suggest that labile particulate organic matter (POM) and/or dissolved organic matter (DOM) from hydrothermal fluid were continuously trapped to form concentrated organic matter in a sulfide-rich matrix.

The Kaon $B$-parameter with Wilson Fermions

We calculate the kaon $B$-parameter in quenched lattice QCD at $β=6.0$ using Wilson fermions at $κ=0.154$ and $0.155$. We use two kinds of non-local (``smeared'') sources for quark propagators to calculate the matrix elements between states of definite momentum. The use of smeared sources yields results with much smaller errors than obtained in previous calculations with Wilson fermions. By combining results for $\vec p =(0,0,0)$ and $\vec p =(0,0,1)$, we show that one can carry out the non-perturbative subtraction necessary to remove the dominant lattice artifacts induced by the chiral symmetry breaking term in the Wilson action. Our final results are in good agreement with those obtained using staggered fermions. We also present results for $B$-parameters of the $ΔI = 3/2$ part of the electromagnetic penguin operators, and preliminary results for \bk\ in the presence of two flavors of dynamical quarks.
