An Adaptive Antenna Impedance Matching Method via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Adaptive impedance matching between antennas and radio frequency front-end modules is critical for maximizing power transmission efficiency in mobile communication systems. Conventional numerical and analytical methods struggle with a trade-off between accuracy and efficiency, while deep neural network (DNN)-based supervised learning approaches rely heavily on large labeled datasets and lack flexibility for dynamic environments. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach for adaptive impedance matching. First, we model the impedance tuning problem as an optimal control problem, proving the feasibility of solving the optimal control law via reinforcement learning. Then, we design a tailored DRL framework for impedance tuning, which employs a compact state representation that integrates key frequency characteristics and matching quality metrics. Additionally, this framework incorporates a piecewise reward function that accounts for both matching accuracy and tuning speed. Furthermore, a test-phase exploration mechanism is introduced to enhance tuning stability, which effectively reduces local optimal trapping and high-frequency tuning variance. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior performance in terms of tuning accuracy, efficiency, and stability compared with conventional heuristic and gradient-based methods, making it promising for practical impedance tuning systems.

Supercell-size scaling of moir\'e band flatness

In moir\'e superlattices, the band flatness governs the degree of wave localization, which is central to harnessing emergent phenomena and designing functional meta-devices. While research has focused on the magic conditions such as magic angle and magic distance for optimal flatness, a fundamental understanding of how flatness changes with the supercell size has remained elusive. Here, we establish a universal scaling between band flatness and supercell size. Theoretically, by recognizing the statistical equivalence between structural perturbations in moir\'e superlattices and disordered systems, we introduce the Thouless number to evaluate the strength of moir\'e localization. This approach allows us to establish a scaling theory for the evolution of band flatness with the supercell size, from which an analytical expression is derived. Our full-wave simulations with one-dimensional and two-dimensional moir\'e superlattices show excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction. Our work reveals a general scaling law for moir\'e band flatness, offering a new perspective for understanding and designing moir\'e-based resonant systems.

Unified Multimodal and Multilingual Retrieval via Multi-Task Learning with NLU Integration

Multimodal retrieval systems typically employ Vision Language Models (VLMs) that encode images and text independently into vectors within a shared embedding space. Despite incorporating text encoders, VLMs consistently underperform specialized text models on text-only retrieval tasks. Moreover, introducing additional text encoders increases storage, inference overhead, and exacerbates retrieval inefficiencies, especially in multilingual settings. To address these limitations, we propose a multi-task learning framework that unifies the feature representation across images, long and short texts, and intent-rich queries. To our knowledge, this is the first work to jointly optimize multilingual image retrieval, text retrieval, and natural language understanding (NLU) tasks within a single framework. Our approach integrates image and text retrieval with a shared text encoder that is enhanced by NLU features for intent understanding and retrieval accuracy.

Nonlinear virtual lens for programmable and multispectral infrared upconversion imaging

Conventional infrared (IR) imaging techniques depend on IR cameras based on narrow-bandgap semiconductors, which offer limited spectral bandwidth, coupled with a separate lens. Recently, advances in nonlinear flat optics have opened a novel pathway for converting IR signals into the visible through nonlinear generations, enabling the direct visualisation of IR images using standard visible cameras. However, the narrow spectral bandwidth and the requirement for an additional lens remain the key challenges. Here, we address both issues via a novel adaptive and multifunctional IR-to-visible imaging platform offering tunable bandwidth and focusing simultaneously. We utilise sum-frequency generation (SFG) to convert IR light into the visible, by introducing a pump beam modulated by a spatial light modulator (SLM) to construct a virtual metalens enabling precisely controlled focusing of the generated nonlinear optical field. As a result, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally an optical focusing mechanism with a tunable focal length, achieved by varying the pump and signal wavelengths and modulating the phase distribution. Furthermore, since the focal length depends on the input signal wavelength, the imaging plane position varies accordingly, indicating a promising potential for the multispectral IR imaging applications. Our upconversion platform delivers SLM-controlled, programmable multispectral focusing for next-generation IR imaging, opening new avenues in the fields of computational and multispectral imaging techniques.

From Imitation to Discrimination: Toward A Generalized Curriculum Advantage Mechanism Enhancing Cross-Domain Reasoning Tasks

Reinforcement learning has emerged as a paradigm for post-training large language models, boosting their reasoning capabilities. Such approaches compute an advantage value for each sample, reflecting better or worse performance than expected, thereby yielding both positive and negative signals for training. However, the indiscriminate mixing of the two signals in existing methods, especially from the early stages, may lead to ambiguous guidance and limited gains. To address this issue, we propose **CAPO** (**C**urriculum **A**dvantage **P**olicy **O**ptimization), an adaptive curriculum mechanism based on advantage signals. The proposed mechanism bootstraps imitation learning with positive-only advantage samples to establish robust foundations, and subsequently introduces negative signals to cultivate discriminative capabilities, thereby improving generalization across complex scenarios. Compatible with diverse optimization methods including GRPO, PPO, RLOO, and Reinforce++, our method consistently achieves stable and significant improvements in mathematical reasoning tasks, and further generalizes effectively to multimodal Graphical User Interface (GUI) reasoning scenarios, establishing itself as a versatile and robust optimization framework.

Lego-Edit: A General Image Editing Framework with Model-Level Bricks and MLLM Builder

Instruction-based image editing has garnered significant attention due to its direct interaction with users. However, real-world user instructions are immensely diverse, and existing methods often fail to generalize effectively to instructions outside their training domain, limiting their practical application. To address this, we propose Lego-Edit, which leverages the generalization capability of Multi-modal Large Language Model (MLLM) to organize a suite of model-level editing tools to tackle this challenge. Lego-Edit incorporates two key designs: (1) a model-level toolkit comprising diverse models efficiently trained on limited data and several image manipulation functions, enabling fine-grained composition of editing actions by the MLLM; and (2) a three-stage progressive reinforcement learning approach that uses feedback on unannotated, open-domain instructions to train the MLLM, equipping it with generalized reasoning capabilities for handling real-world instructions. Experiments demonstrate that Lego-Edit achieves state-of-the-art performance on GEdit-Bench and ImgBench. It exhibits robust reasoning capabilities for open-domain instructions and can utilize newly introduced editing tools without additional fine-tuning. Tight Cache Contention Analysis for WCET Estimation on Multicore Systems

WCET (Worst-Case Execution Time) estimation on multicore architecture is particularly challenging mainly due to the complex accesses over cache shared by multiple cores. Existing analysis identifies possible contentions between parallel tasks by leveraging the partial order of the tasks or their program regions. Unfortunately, they overestimate the number of cache misses caused by a remote block access without considering the actual cache state and the number of accesses. This paper reports a new analysis for inter-core cache contention. Based on the order of program regions in a task, we first identify memory references that could be affected if a remote access occurs in a region. Afterwards, a fine-grained contention analysis is constructed that computes the number of cache misses based on the access quantity of local and remote blocks. We demonstrate that the overall inter-core cache interference of a task can be obtained via dynamic programming. Experiments show that compared to existing methods, the proposed analysis reduces inter-core cache interference and WCET estimations by 52.31% and 8.94% on average, without significantly increasing computation overhead.

Local perfect chirality at reflection-zeros away from exceptional points in optical whispering gallery microcavity

Recently, a local and imperfect chirality of the resonant eigenmode at the exceptional point (EP) has been reported in the optical whispering gallery microcavity system perturbed by two strong nanoscatterers [Phys. Rev. A 108, L041501 (2023)]. Here, we discover a local perfect chirality of the resonant eigenmode away from the EP in the parameter space of the strongly perturbed microcavity system. By considering the multiple scattering process of the azimuthally propagating modes (APMs) at the nanoscatterers with a first-principles-based model, the local perfect chirality is predicted to result from the unidirectional reflectionlessness, i.e., the reflection-zero (R-zero) of the APMs at the two nanoscatterers. Numerical results and model predictions consistently show that the structural parameters of the R-zero typically deviate from those of the EP, which means that the pair of split resonant eigenmodes at the R-zero have different complex resonance frequencies and electromagnetic fields. In general, only one of the pair of split eigenmodes exhibits a local perfect chirality within the local azimuthal range divided by the two nanoscatterers. With the decrease of the two nanoscatterers' sizes or their relative azimuthal angle, the R-zero tends to coincide with the EP.

Second-harmonic generation with a 440,000% W-1 conversion efficiency in a lithium niobate microcavity without periodic poling

Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) enables extremely high-efficiency second-order nonlinear optical effects due to large nonlinear coefficient d33 and strong optical field localization. Here, we first designed and fabricated a pulley-waveguide-coupled microring resonator with an intrinsic quality factor above 9.4 x10^5 on the reverse-polarized double-layer X-cut TFLN. In such a TFLN resonator without fine domain structures, second harmonic generation with an absolute (normalized) conversion efficiency of 30% (440,000% W-1), comparable to that in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) microring resonators, was realized with a sub-microwatt continuous pump. This work reduces the dependence of high-efficiency nonlinear frequency conversion on PPLN microcavities that are difficult to prepare.

High-efficiency edge couplers enabled by vertically tapering on lithium-niobate photonic chips

In the past decade, photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) have advanced in various fields, including optical communication, nonlinear photonics, and quantum optics. A critical component is an efficient edge coupler connecting PICs to light sources or detectors. Here, we propose an innovative edge coupler design with a wedge-shaped TFLN waveguide and a silicon oxynitride (SiON) cladding. Experimental results show that the coupling loss between the TFLN PIC and a 3-{\mu}m mode field diameter (MFD) lensed fiber is low at 1.52 dB/facet, with the potential for improvement to 0.43 dB/facet theoretically. The coupling loss between the edge coupler and a UHNA7 fiber with an MFD of 3.2 {\mu}m is reduced to 0.92 dB/facet. This design maintains robust fabrication and alignment tolerance. Importantly, the minimum linewidth of the TFLN waveguide of the coupler (600 nm) can be easily achieved using foundry-available i-line stepper lithography. This work benefits the development of TFLN integrated platforms, such as on-chip electro-optic modulators, frequency comb generation, and quantum sensors.

Second harmonic and cascaded third harmonic generation in generalized quasi-periodic poled lithium niobate waveguides

Lithium niobate (LN) thin film has recently emerged as an important platform for nonlinear optical investigations for its large $\chi^{(2)}$ nonlinear coefficients and ability of light localization. In this paper, we report the first fabrication of LN on insulator (LNOI) ridge waveguides with generalized quasi-periodic poled superlattices using the electric field polarization technique and microfabrication techniques. Benefiting from the abundant reciprocal vectors, we observed efficient second-harmonic and cascaded third-harmonic signals in the same device, with the normalized conversion efficiency 1735% W$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$ and 0.41% W$^{-2}$cm$^{-4}$, respectively. This work opens a new direction of nonlinear integrated photonics based on LN thin film.

Robust moir\'e flatbands within a broad band-offset range

Photonic analogs of the moir\'e superlattices mediated by interlayer electromagnetic coupling are expected to give rise to rich phenomena such as nontrivial flatband topology. Here, we propose and demonstrate a scheme to tune the flatbands in a bilayer moir\'e superlattice by employing the band offset. The band offset is changed by fixing the bands of one slab while shifting those of the other slab, which is accomplished by modifying the thickness of the latter slab. Our results show that the band-offset tuning not only makes some flatbands emerge and disappear, but also leads to two sets of flatbands that are robustly formed even with the change of band offset over a broad range. These robust flatbands form either at the AA-stack site or at the AB-stack site, and as a result, a single-cell superlattice can support a pair of high-quality localized modes with tunable frequencies. Moreover, we develop a diagrammatic model to provide an intuitive insight into the formation of the robust flatbands. Our work demonstrates a simple yet efficient way to design and control complex moir\'e flatbands, providing new opportunities to utilize photonic moir\'e superlattices for advanced light-matter interaction including lasing and nonlinear harmonic generation.

Imperfect chirality at exceptional points in optical whispering-gallery microcavities

Non-Hermitian systems have attracted considerable attention for their broad impacts on various physical platforms and peculiar applications. In non-Hermitian systems, both eigenvalues and eigenstates simultaneously coalesce at exceptional points (EPs). As one of the remarkable features of EPs, the field chirality is commonly considered perfect, which is utilized as an intriguing feature to control wave propagation and regarded as a criterion of EP. However, in this work, we discover an imperfect chirality of eigenmodes at the EPs in an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity perturbed by two strong nanoscatterers. This counterintuitive phenomenon originates from a strong frequency-dependence of the scattering between the counterpropagating waves at an "effective scatterer", which could be explained by a first-principle-based model considering a dynamic multiple-scattering process of the azimuthally propagating modes. We find that the generally imperfect chirality at the EP tends to be globally perfect with the decrease of the scattering effect induced by the nanoscatterers. Furthermore, the chirality also becomes locally perfect with the decrease of the relative azimuthal angle between the two strong nanoscatterers. This work provides a new understanding of the general properties of chirality at EPs. It will benefit the potential applications enabled by the chirality features of non-Hermitian systems at EPs.

Graphical Direct-Writing of Macroscale Domain Structures with Nanoscale Spatial Resolution in Non-Polar-Cut Lithium Niobate on Insulators

We reported on a graphical domain engineering technique with the capability to fabricate macroscale domain structures with nanoscale spatial resolution in non-polar-cut lithium niobate thin film on insulators through the biased probe tip of scanning atomic force microscopy. It was found that the domain writing process is asymmetric with respect to the spontaneous polarization Ps even though the tip-induced poling field is mirror-symmetric. Various domain structures, with a dimension larger than millimeters while consisting of nanoscale domain elements and with arbitrary domain-wall inclination angle with respect to Ps, were designed graphically and then written directly into non-polar-cut lithium niobate crystals. As a proof of principle demonstration, periodically poled x-cut lithium niobate thin film on insulators with a period of 600 nm, a depth of 460 nm and a length of ~1 mm was fabricated. This technique could be useful for device applications in integrated optics and opto-electronics and domain-wall nanoelectronics based on lithium niobate on insulator.

On-chip erbium-doped lithium niobate microring lasers

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), regarded as an important candidate platform for optical integration due to its excellent nonlinear, electro-optic and other physical properties, has become a research hotspot. Light source, as an essential component for integrated optical system, is urgently needed. In this paper, we reported the realization of 1550-nm band on-chip LNOI microlasers based on erbium-doped LNOI ring cavities with loaded quality factors higher than one million, which were fabricated by using electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching processes. These microlasers demonstrated a low pump threshold of ~20 {\mu}W and stable performance under the pump of a 980-nm band continuous laser. Comb-like laser spectra spanning from 1510 nm to 1580 nm were observed in high pump power regime, which lays the foundation of the realization of pulsed laser and frequency combs on rare-earth ion doped LNOI platform. This work has effectively promoted the development of on-chip integrated active LNOI devices.

Spontaneous photon-pair generation at the nanoscale

Optical nanoantennas have shown a great capacity for efficient extraction of photons from the near to the far-field, enabling directional emission from nanoscale single-photon sources. However, their potential for the generation and extraction of multi-photon quantum states remains unexplored. Here we demonstrate experimentally the nanoscale generation of two-photon quantum states at telecommunication wavelengths based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in an optical nanoantenna. The antenna is a crystalline AlGaAs nanocylinder, possessing Mie-type resonances at both the pump and the bi-photon wavelengths and when excited by a pump beam generates photonpairs with a rate of 35 Hz. Normalized to the pump energy stored by the nanoantenna, this rate corresponds to 1.4 GHz/Wm, being one order of magnitude higher than conventional on-chip or bulk photon-pair sources. Our experiments open the way for multiplexing several antennas for coherent generation of multi-photon quantum states with complex spatial-mode entanglement and applications in free-space quantum communications and sensing.
