Gromov's dihedral rigidity conjecture in dimension three

In this article, we present a self-contained proof of Gromov's dihedral rigidity conjecture on scalar curvature in the three-dimensional case. The proof avoids many of the technical complications that arise in higher dimensions, while still illustrating the essential ideas of the general approach developed in arXiv:2112.01510 (version 6) and arXiv:2203.09511. It is significantly shorter than the proof of the general case and is intended to be more accessible.

Gromov's Simplicial Volume Vanishing Conjecture for Positive Scalar Curvature

In this paper, we prove Gromov's simplicial volume vanishing conjecture for closed manifolds with spin universal cover. More precisely, we show that if a closed oriented manifold admits a metric of nonnegative scalar curvature and its universal cover is spin, then its simplicial volume vanishes. In particular, a closed oriented aspherical manifold with nonzero simplicial volume admits no metric of nonnegative scalar curvature.

Embedding complexity into the universal Banach space and the strong Novikov conjecture

Brown-Guentner and Haagerup-Przybyszewska showed that every discrete group admits a proper affine isometric action on the universal Banach space $\bigoplus_{p=1}^{\infty} \ell^{2p}(\mathbb{N}),$ taken as the $\ell^{2}$-direct sum, and hence admits a coarse embedding into this space [7, 28]. They further asked whether such embeddings could be used to study the Novikov conjecture. In this paper, we address this question by proving that the strong Novikov conjecture holds for any discrete group that admits a coarse embedding with finite complexity into this universal Banach space. Finally, we show that the recently discovered non-sofic groups constructed by Kun and Thom have Property A and therefore satisfy the Novikov conjecture.

Small scale index theory, scalar curvature, and Gromov's simplicial norms

In this article, we study the topological complexity of manifolds with a lower scalar curvature bound. We introduce a small scale index theorem to establish an upper bound for Gromov's simplicial norm of the Poincar\'e dual of the A-hat class for manifolds with spin universal covering, in terms of a scalar curvature lower bound, volume upper bound, and injectivity radius lower bound of the universal covering. This result can be viewed both as a generalization of Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem and as a scalar curvature analogue to Cheeger finiteness theorem.

Moir\'e-Induced Magnetoelectricity in Twisted Bilayer NiI2

Twisted magnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials offer a promising route for multiferroic engineering, yet modeling large-scale moir\'e superlattices remains challenging. Leveraging a newly developed SpinGNN++ framework that effectively handles spin-lattice coupled systems, we develop a comprehensive interatomic machine learning (ML) potential and apply it to twisted bilayer NiI2 (TBN). Structural relaxation introduces moir\'e-periodic "bumps" that modulate the interlayer spacing by about 0.55~\AA{} and in-plane ionic shifts up to 0.48~\AA{}. Concurrently, our ML potential, which faithfully captures all key spin interactions, produces reliable magnetic configurations; combined with the generalized KNB mechanism, it yields accurate spin-driven polarization. For twist angles 1.89^{\circ} \leq \theta \leq 2.45^{\circ}, both mechanisms become prominent, yielding rich polarization textures that combine ionic out-of-plane dipoles with purely electronic in-plane domains. In the rigid (unrelaxed) bilayer, skyrmions are absent; lattice relaxation is essential for generating polar-magnetic topologies. In contrast, near {\theta} \approx 60^{\circ}, stacking-dependent ferroelectric displacements dominate, giving rise to polar meron-antimeron networks. These results reveal cooperative ionic and spin-driven ferroelectricity in TBN, positioning twisted vdW magnets as adaptable platforms for tunable multiferroic devices.

Quantitative index, Novikov conjecture and coarse decomposability

We define for families of finite metric spaces quantitative assembly map estimates that take into account propagation phenomena for pseudo-differential calculus. We relate these estimates to the Novikov conjecture and we show that they fit nicely under coarse decompositions. As an application, we provide a geometric proof of Novikov conjecture for groups with finite decomposition complexity.

Hilbert-Hadamard spaces and the equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture

The equivariant coarse Novikov conjectures stand among a handful profound $K$-theoretic conjectures in noncommutative geometry. Motivated by the quest to verify Novikov-type conjectures for groups of diffeomorphisms, we study in this paper the equivariant coarse Novikov conjectures for spaces that equivariantly and coarsely embed into admissible Hilbert-Hadamard spaces, which are a type of infinite-dimensional nonpositively curved spaces. The paper is split into two parts. We prove in the first part that for any metric space $X$ with bounded geometry and with a proper isometric action $\alpha$ by a countable discrete group $\Gamma$, if $X$ admits an equivariant coarse embedding into an admissible Hilbert-Hadamard space and $\Gamma$ is torsion-free, then the equivariant coarse strong Novikov conjecture holds rationally for $(X, \Gamma, \alpha)$. In the second part, we extend the result in the first part by dropping the torsion-free assumption on $\Gamma$. To this end, we introduce, for a proper $\Gamma$-space $X$ with equivariant bounded geometry, a new Novikov-type conjecture that we call the rational analytic equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture, which generalizes the rational analytic Novikov conjecture and asserts the rational injectivity of a certain assembly map associated with a coarse analog of the classifying space $E\Gamma$. We show that for a proper $\Gamma$-space $X$ with equivariant bounded geometry, if $X$ admits an equivariant coarse embedding into an admissible Hilbert-Hadamard space, then the rational analytic equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture holds for $(X,\Gamma,\alpha)$, i.e., the assembly map is a rational injection.

Equivalence of different definitions of higher $\rho$ invariants

For each orientation-preserving homotopy equivalence between two closed oriented smooth manifolds, there are mainly two different approaches to the higher $\rho$ invariant associated to this homotopy equivalence. In this article, we show that these two definitions of the higher $\rho$ invariant are equivalent.

Bounding the A-hat genus using scalar curvature lower bounds and isoperimetric constants

In this paper, we prove an upper bound on the $\widehat{A}$ genus of a smooth, closed, spin Riemannian manifold using its scalar curvature lower bound, Neumann isoperimetric constant, and volume. The proof of this result relies on spectral analysis of the Dirac operator. We also construct an example to show that the Neumann isoperimetric constant in this bound is necessary. Our result partially answers a question of Gromov on bounding characteristic numbers using scalar curvature lower bound.

Symmetry Strategy for Rapid Discovery of Abundant Fractional Quantum Ferroelectrics

Traditional ferroelectrics are limited by Neumann's principle, which confines exploration of ferroelectrics within polar point groups. Our recent work [Nat. Commun. 15, 135, (2024)] proposes the concept of fractional quantum ferroelectricity (FQFE) that extend the playground of ferroelectricity to non-polar point groups. Here, we apply group theory and introduce an efficient symmetry strategy to identify FQFE candidates. Integrated with a high-throughput screening scheme, we go through 171,527 materials and identify 202 potential FQFE candidates, which are already experimentally synthesized. In addition, we point out that the essence of FQFE is fractional atomic displacements with respect to lattice vectors, which can actually result in both fractional (type-I) and integer (type-II) quantized polarization, respectively. Through performing first-principles calculations, we verify the symmetry-predicted switchable FQFE properties in bulk AlAgS2 and monolayer HgI2. Notably, AlAgS2 exhibits an ultra-low switching barrier of 23 meV/f.u. and interlocked in-plane/out-of-plane polarization, while HgI2 demonstrates large spontaneous polarization of 42 {\mu}C/cm2. Our findings not only advance the understanding on FQFE, but also offer guidance for experimental exploration and design of novel ferroelectric materials.

Polarization multistates in antiferroelectric van der Waals materials

The bistability of charge polarization in ferroelectric materials has long been the basis of ferroelectric devices. However, the ferroelectricity tends to be vanishing as the thickness of materials is reduced to a few nanometers or thinner due to the depolarization field. Instead, they show a paraelectric or an antiferroelectric ordering in the ultra-thin limit, which is unfavorable for their applications in devices. Here we uncover polarization multistates in thin films of van der Waals materials, in which the individual monolayers have an antiferroelectric ordering with out-of-plane polarizations. This property results from a unique combination of the polarization and layer degrees of freedom. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that bilayers and trilayers of the CuInP$_2$S$_6$ family possess quintuple and septuple polarization states., respectively. Our climbing image nudged elastic band calculations for the bilayers and trilayers of CuInP$_2$S$_6$ and CuCrP$_2$S$_6$ further show that the states can be transformed into each other under appropriate external electric fields, for which a unique layer-selective half-layer-by-half-layer flipping mechanism governs the transformings. Our study opens up a door to design unusual polarization states using intrinsic degrees of freedom of layered antiferroelectrics for the next-generation ferroelectric devices that go beyond the bistability paradigm.

Higher index theory for spaces with an FCE-by-FCE structure

Let $(1\to N_n\to G_n\to Q_n\to 1)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ be a sequence of extensions of finite groups. Assume that the coarse disjoint unions of $(N_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, $(G_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ and $(Q_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ have bounded geometry. The sequence $(G_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ is said to have an \emph{FCE-by-FCE structure}, if the sequence $(N_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ and the sequence $(Q_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ admit \emph{a fibred coarse embedding} into Hilbert space. In this paper, we show that the coarse Novikov conjecture holds for spaces with an FCE-by-FCE structure.

The Novikov conjecture, the group of diffeomorphisms and continuous fields of Hilbert-Hadamard spaces

In this paper, we prove the Novikov conjecture for a class of highly non-linear groups, namely discrete subgroups of the diffeomorphism group of a compact smooth manifold. This removes the volume-preserving condition in a previous work. This result is proved by studying operator $K$-theory and group actions on continuous fields of infinite dimensional non-positively curved spaces.

Unconventional Ferroelectricity in Violation with Neumann's Principle

The physical properties of crystals are governed by their symmetry according to Neumann's principle. However, we present a case that contradicts this principle wherein the polarization is not invariant under its symmetry. We term this phenomenon as unconventional ferroelectricity in violation of Neumann's principle (UFVNP). Our group theory analysis reveals that 33 symmorphic space groups have the potential for UFVNP, with 26 of these symmorphic space groups belonging to non-polar groups. Notably, the polarization component in UFVNP materials is quantized. Our theory can explain the experimentally proven in-plane polarization of the monolayer {\alpha}-In2Se3, which has C3v symmetry. Additionally, we employ first-principles calculations to demonstrate the existence of UFVNP in Td phase AgBr, which was not initially anticipated to exhibit polarization. Thus, UFVNP plays an integral role in characterizing and exploring the possible applications of ferroelectrics, significantly expanding the range of available materials for study.

Bilayer Stacking Ferrovalley without Breaking Time-Reversal Symmetry

Non-volatile manipulation of valley polarization in solids has long been desired for valleytronics applications but remains challenging. Here, we propose a novel strategy for non-volatile manipulating valleys through bilayer stacking, which enables spontaneous valley polarization without breaking time-reversal symmetry. We call this noval physics as bilayer stacking ferrovalley (BSFV). The group theory analysis reveals that the two-dimensional (2D) valley materials with hexagonal and square lattices can host BSFV. By searching the 2D material database, we discovered 14 monolayer 2D materials with direct gaps that are candidates for realizing BSFV. Further first-principles calculations demonstrate that BSFV exists in RhCl3 and InI bilayers. The bilayer stacking breaks their three- and four-fold rotation symmetry, resulting in 39 and 326 meV valley polarization, respectively. More interestingly, the valley polarization in our systems can be switched by interlayer sliding. Our study opens up a new direction for designing ferrovalley materials and thus greatly enriches the platform for the research of valleytronics.
