Bounds on the Semidefinite Programming Complexity of the Euclidean Ball

We present tight lower bounds for the size of any linear matrix inequality representation of the Euclidean ball, and on the semidefinite extension complexity of the ball. Specifically, we show that any linear matrix inequality representing the Euclidean ball must involve matrices of size at least $n$, and any spectrahedral extension of the Euclidean ball must involve matrices of size at least $2\sqrt{n-1}$. These match the bounds given by existing explicit constructions. Our proofs rely on elementary facts about the dimension of the set of faces of spectrahedra, and indeed extend to any convex set whose extreme points form a semialgebraic set.

Segre Class of Schemes with Regularly Embedded Components

We generalize Fulton's Residual Intersection Theorem for the Segre class and express the Segre classes of schemes with regularly embedded components in terms of the Chern classes of the normal bundles to the components and their intersections. More specifically, we provide formulas for the following situations: when the components of the scheme intersect transversely and when the ideal sheaf of the scheme, after the blowup along a component, is the product of the ideal sheaves of the exceptional divisor and the residual scheme.

The Adjoint Polynomial of a Polyhedral Cone is a Covolume Polynomial

In this paper, we showed that the adjoint polynomial of a polyhedral cone equals the multidegree polynomial of the toric ideal with multigrading, both given by the vertex rays. This fact implies a conjecture of Aluffi, to the effect that the adjoint polynomial of a polyhedral cone in the positive orthant is a covolume polynomial.
