Separating k-Player from t-Player One-Way Communication, with Applications to Data Streams

In a $k$-party communication problem, the $k$ players with inputs $x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_k$, respectively, want to evaluate a function $f(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_k)$ using as little communication as possible. We consider the message-passing model, in which the inputs are partitioned in an arbitrary, possibly worst-case manner, among a smaller number $t$ of players ($t<k$). The $t$-player communication cost of computing $f$ can only be smaller than the $k$-player communication cost, since the $t$ players can trivially simulate the $k$-player protocol. But how much smaller can it be? We study deterministic and randomized protocols in the one-way model, and provide separations for product input distributions, which are optimal for low error probability protocols. We also provide much stronger separations when the input distribution is non-product. A key application of our results is in proving lower bounds for data stream algorithms. In particular, we give an optimal $Ω(ε^{-2}\log(N) \log \log(mM))$ bits of space lower bound for the fundamental problem of $(1\pmε)$-approximating the number $\|x\|_0$ of non-zero entries of an $n$-dimensional vector $x$ after $m$ integer updates each of magnitude at most $M$, and with success probability $\ge 2/3$, in a strict turnstile stream. We additionally prove the matching $Ω(ε^{-2}\log(N) \log \log(T))$ space lower bound for the problem when we have access to a heavy hitters oracle with threshold $T$. Our results match the best known upper bounds when $ε\ge 1/\operatorname{polylog}(mM)$ and when $T = 2^{\operatorname{poly}(1/ε)}$ respectively. It also improves on the prior $Ω(ε^{-2}\log(mM) )$ lower bound and separates the complexity of approximating $L_0$ from approximating the $p$-norm $L_p$ for $p$ bounded away from $0$, since the latter has an $O(ε^{-2}\log (mM))$ bit upper bound.

The viewing angle in AGN SED models, a data-driven analysis

The validity of the unified active galactic nuclei (AGN) model has been challenged in the last decade, especially when different types of AGNs are considered to only differ in the viewing angle to the torus. We aim to assess the importance of the viewing angle in classifying different types of Seyfert galaxies in spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling. We retrieve photometric data from publicly available astronomical databases: CDS and NED, to model SEDs with X-CIGALE in a sample of 13 173 Seyfert galaxies located at redshift range from $z=0$ to $z=3.5$, with a median redshift of $z\approx0.2$. We assess whether the estimated viewing angle from the SED models reflects different Seyfert classifications. Two AGN models with either a smooth or clumpy torus structure are adopted in this paper. We find that the viewing angle in Type-1 AGNs is better constrained than in Type-2 AGNs. Limiting the viewing angles representing these two types of AGNs do not affect the physical parameter estimates such as star-formation rate (SFR) or AGN fractional contribution ($f_{\rm{AGN}}$). In addition, the viewing angle is not the most discriminating physical parameter to differentiate Seyfert types. We suggest that the observed and intrinsic AGN disc luminosity can: i) be used in $z<0.5$ studies to distinguish between Type-1 and Type-2 AGNs, and ii) explain the probable evolutionary path between these AGN types. Finally, we propose the use of X-CIGALE for AGN galaxy classification tasks. All data from the 13 173 SED fits are available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5221764

Lossless broadband adiabatic polarizing beam splitting in a plasmonic system

The intriguing analogy between quantum physics and optics has inspired the design of unconventional integrated photonics devices. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a broadband integrated polarization beam splitter (PBS) by implementing the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique in a three-waveguide plasmonic system. Our proposed PBS exhibits >250 nm TM bandwidth with <-40 dB extinction and >150 nm TE bandwidth with <-20 dB extinction, covering the entire S-, C- and L-band and partly E-band. Moreover, near-lossless light transfer is achieved in our system despite the incorporation of a plasmonic hybrid waveguide because of the unique loss mitigating feature of the STIRAP scheme. Through this approach, various broadband integrated devices that were previously impossible can be realized, which will allow innovation in integrated optics.

Synthetic Velocity Mapping Cardiac MRI Coupled with Automated Left Ventricle Segmentation

Temporal patterns of cardiac motion provide important information for cardiac disease diagnosis. This pattern could be obtained by three-directional CINE multi-slice left ventricular myocardial velocity mapping (3Dir MVM), which is a cardiac MR technique providing magnitude and phase information of the myocardial motion simultaneously. However, long acquisition time limits the usage of this technique by causing breathing artifacts, while shortening the time causes low temporal resolution and may provide an inaccurate assessment of cardiac motion. In this study, we proposed a frame synthesis algorithm to increase the temporal resolution of 3Dir MVM data. Our algorithm is featured by 1) three attention-based encoders which accept magnitude images, phase images, and myocardium segmentation masks respectively as inputs; 2) three decoders that output the interpolated frames and corresponding myocardium segmentation results; and 3) loss functions highlighting myocardium pixels. Our algorithm can not only increase the temporal resolution 3Dir MVMs, but can also generates the myocardium segmentation results at the same time.

Incorporating Boundary Uncertainty into loss functions for biomedical image segmentation

Manual segmentation is used as the gold-standard for evaluating neural networks on automated image segmentation tasks. Due to considerable heterogeneity in shapes, colours and textures, demarcating object boundaries is particularly difficult in biomedical images, resulting in significant inter and intra-rater variability. Approaches, such as soft labelling and distance penalty term, apply a global transformation to the ground truth, redefining the loss function with respect to uncertainty. However, global operations are computationally expensive, and neither approach accurately reflects the uncertainty underlying manual annotation. In this paper, we propose the Boundary Uncertainty, which uses morphological operations to restrict soft labelling to object boundaries, providing an appropriate representation of uncertainty in ground truth labels, and may be adapted to enable robust model training where systematic manual segmentation errors are present. We incorporate Boundary Uncertainty with the Dice loss, achieving consistently improved performance across three well-validated biomedical imaging datasets compared to soft labelling and distance-weighted penalty. Boundary Uncertainty not only more accurately reflects the segmentation process, but it is also efficient, robust to segmentation errors and exhibits better generalisation.

Focal Attention Networks: optimising attention for biomedical image segmentation

In recent years, there has been increasing interest to incorporate attention into deep learning architectures for biomedical image segmentation. The modular design of attention mechanisms enables flexible integration into convolutional neural network architectures, such as the U-Net. Whether attention is appropriate to use, what type of attention to use, and where in the network to incorporate attention modules, are all important considerations that are currently overlooked. In this paper, we investigate the role of the Focal parameter in modulating attention, revealing a link between attention in loss functions and networks. By incorporating a Focal distance penalty term, we extend the Unified Focal loss framework to include boundary-based losses. Furthermore, we develop a simple and interpretable, dataset and model-specific heuristic to integrate the Focal parameter into the Squeeze-and-Excitation block and Attention Gate, achieving optimal performance with fewer number of attention modules on three well-validated biomedical imaging datasets, suggesting judicious use of attention modules results in better performance and efficiency.

DeepSCC: Source Code Classification Based on Fine-Tuned RoBERTa

In software engineering-related tasks (such as programming language tag prediction based on code snippets from Stack Overflow), the programming language classification for code snippets is a common task. In this study, we propose a novel method DeepSCC, which uses a fine-tuned RoBERTa model to classify the programming language type of the source code. In our empirical study, we choose a corpus collected from Stack Overflow, which contains 224,445 pairs of code snippets and corresponding language types. After comparing nine state-of-the-art baselines from the fields of source code classification and neural text classification in terms of four performance measures (i.e., Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1), we show the competitiveness of our proposed method DeepSCC

Fine-grained Pseudo-code Generation Method via Code Feature Extraction and Transformer

Pseudo-code written by natural language is helpful for novice developers' program comprehension. However, writing such pseudo-code is time-consuming and laborious. Motivated by the research advancements of sequence-to-sequence learning and code semantic learning, we propose a novel deep pseudo-code generation method DeepPseudo via code feature extraction and Transformer. In particular, DeepPseudo utilizes a Transformer encoder to perform encoding for source code and then use a code feature extractor to learn the knowledge of local features. Finally, it uses a pseudo-code generator to perform decoding, which can generate the corresponding pseudo-code. We choose two corpora (i.e., Django and SPoC) from real-world large-scale projects as our empirical subjects. We first compare DeepPseudo with seven state-of-the-art baselines from pseudo-code generation and neural machine translation domains in terms of four performance measures. Results show the competitiveness of DeepPseudo. Moreover, we also analyze the rationality of the component settings in DeepPseudo.

Adaptive Hierarchical Dual Consistency for Semi-Supervised Left Atrium Segmentation on Cross-Domain Data

Semi-supervised learning provides great significance in left atrium (LA) segmentation model learning with insufficient labelled data. Generalising semi-supervised learning to cross-domain data is of high importance to further improve model robustness. However, the widely existing distribution difference and sample mismatch between different data domains hinder the generalisation of semi-supervised learning. In this study, we alleviate these problems by proposing an Adaptive Hierarchical Dual Consistency (AHDC) for the semi-supervised LA segmentation on cross-domain data. The AHDC mainly consists of a Bidirectional Adversarial Inference module (BAI) and a Hierarchical Dual Consistency learning module (HDC). The BAI overcomes the difference of distributions and the sample mismatch between two different domains. It mainly learns two mapping networks adversarially to obtain two matched domains through mutual adaptation. The HDC investigates a hierarchical dual learning paradigm for cross-domain semi-supervised segmentation based on the obtained matched domains. It mainly builds two dual-modelling networks for mining the complementary information in both intra-domain and inter-domain. For the intra-domain learning, a consistency constraint is applied to the dual-modelling targets to exploit the complementary modelling information. For the inter-domain learning, a consistency constraint is applied to the LAs modelled by two dual-modelling networks to exploit the complementary knowledge among different data domains. We demonstrated the performance of our proposed AHDC on four 3D late gadolinium enhancement cardiac MR (LGE-CMR) datasets from different centres and a 3D CT dataset. Compared to other state-of-the-art methods, our proposed AHDC achieved higher segmentation accuracy, which indicated its capability in the cross-domain semi-supervised LA segmentation.

Do current X-ray observations capture most of the black-hole accretion at high redshifts?

The cosmic black hole accretion density (BHAD) is critical for our understanding of the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes (BHs). However, at high redshifts ($z>3$), X-ray observations report BHADs significantly ($\sim 10$ times) lower than those predicted by cosmological simulations. It is therefore paramount to constrain the high-$z$ BHAD using independent methods other than direct X-ray detections. The recently established relation between star formation rate and BH accretion rate among bulge-dominated galaxies provides such a chance, as it enables an estimate of the BHAD from the star-formation histories (SFHs) of lower-redshift objects. Using the CANDELS Lyman-$α$ Emission At Reionization (CLEAR) survey, we model the SFHs for a sample of 108 bulge-dominated galaxies at $z=$0.7-1.5, and further estimate the BHAD contributed by their high-$z$ progenitors. The predicted BHAD at $z\approx 4$-5 is consistent with the simulation-predicted values, but higher than the X-ray measurements (by $\approx$3-10 times at $z=$4-5). Our result suggests that the current X-ray surveys could be missing many heavily obscured Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at high redshifts. However, this BHAD estimation assumes that the high-$z$ progenitors of our $z=$0.7-1.5 sample remain bulge-dominated where star formation is correlated with BH cold-gas accretion. Alternatively, our prediction could signify a stark decline in the fraction of bulges in high-$z$ galaxies (with an associated drop in BH accretion). JWST and Origins will resolve the discrepancy between our predicted BHAD and the X-ray results by constraining Compton-thick AGN and bulge evolution at high redshifts.

Octonionic Brownian Windings

We define and study the windings along Brownian paths in the octonionic Euclidean, projective and hyperbolic spaces which are isometric to 8-dimensional Riemannian model spaces. In particular, the asymptotic laws of these windings are shown to be Gaussian for the flat and spherical geometries while the hyperbolic winding exhibits a different long time-behavior.

FA-GAN: Fused Attentive Generative Adversarial Networks for MRI Image Super-Resolution

High-resolution magnetic resonance images can provide fine-grained anatomical information, but acquiring such data requires a long scanning time. In this paper, a framework called the Fused Attentive Generative Adversarial Networks(FA-GAN) is proposed to generate the super-resolution MR image from low-resolution magnetic resonance images, which can reduce the scanning time effectively but with high resolution MR images. In the framework of the FA-GAN, the local fusion feature block, consisting of different three-pass networks by using different convolution kernels, is proposed to extract image features at different scales. And the global feature fusion module, including the channel attention module, the self-attention module, and the fusion operation, is designed to enhance the important features of the MR image. Moreover, the spectral normalization process is introduced to make the discriminator network stable. 40 sets of 3D magnetic resonance images (each set of images contains 256 slices) are used to train the network, and 10 sets of images are used to test the proposed method. The experimental results show that the PSNR and SSIM values of the super-resolution magnetic resonance image generated by the proposed FA-GAN method are higher than the state-of-the-art reconstruction methods.

3D AGSE-VNet: An Automatic Brain Tumor MRI Data Segmentation Framework

Background: Glioma is the most common brain malignant tumor, with a high morbidity rate and a mortality rate of more than three percent, which seriously endangers human health. The main method of acquiring brain tumors in the clinic is MRI. Segmentation of brain tumor regions from multi-modal MRI scan images is helpful for treatment inspection, post-diagnosis monitoring, and effect evaluation of patients. However, the common operation in clinical brain tumor segmentation is still manual segmentation, lead to its time-consuming and large performance difference between different operators, a consistent and accurate automatic segmentation method is urgently needed. Methods: To meet the above challenges, we propose an automatic brain tumor MRI data segmentation framework which is called AGSE-VNet. In our study, the Squeeze and Excite (SE) module is added to each encoder, the Attention Guide Filter (AG) module is added to each decoder, using the channel relationship to automatically enhance the useful information in the channel to suppress the useless information, and use the attention mechanism to guide the edge information and remove the influence of irrelevant information such as noise. Results: We used the BraTS2020 challenge online verification tool to evaluate our approach. The focus of verification is that the Dice scores of the whole tumor (WT), tumor core (TC) and enhanced tumor (ET) are 0.68, 0.85 and 0.70, respectively. Conclusion: Although MRI images have different intensities, AGSE-VNet is not affected by the size of the tumor, and can more accurately extract the features of the three regions, it has achieved impressive results and made outstanding contributions to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of brain tumor patients.

High-Resolution Pelvic MRI Reconstruction Using a Generative Adversarial Network with Attention and Cyclic Loss

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important medical imaging modality, but its acquisition speed is quite slow due to the physiological limitations. Recently, super-resolution methods have shown excellent performance in accelerating MRI. In some circumstances, it is difficult to obtain high-resolution images even with prolonged scan time. Therefore, we proposed a novel super-resolution method that uses a generative adversarial network (GAN) with cyclic loss and attention mechanism to generate high-resolution MR images from low-resolution MR images by a factor of 2. We implemented our model on pelvic images from healthy subjects as training and validation data, while those data from patients were used for testing. The MR dataset was obtained using different imaging sequences, including T2, T2W SPAIR, and mDIXON-W. Four methods, i.e., BICUBIC, SRCNN, SRGAN, and EDSR were used for comparison. Structural similarity, peak signal to noise ratio, root mean square error, and variance inflation factor were used as calculation indicators to evaluate the performances of the proposed method. Various experimental results showed that our method can better restore the details of the high-resolution MR image as compared to the other methods. In addition, the reconstructed high-resolution MR image can provide better lesion textures in the tumor patients, which is promising to be used in clinical diagnosis.

RingFed: Reducing Communication Costs in Federated Learning on Non-IID Data

Federated learning is a widely used distributed deep learning framework that protects the privacy of each client by exchanging model parameters rather than raw data. However, federated learning suffers from high communication costs, as a considerable number of model parameters need to be transmitted many times during the training process, making the approach inefficient, especially when the communication network bandwidth is limited. This article proposes RingFed, a novel framework to reduce communication overhead during the training process of federated learning. Rather than transmitting parameters between the center server and each client, as in original federated learning, in the proposed RingFed, the updated parameters are transmitted between each client in turn, and only the final result is transmitted to the central server, thereby reducing the communication overhead substantially. After several local updates, clients first send their parameters to another proximal client, not to the center server directly, to preaggregate. Experiments on two different public datasets show that RingFed has fast convergence, high model accuracy, and low communication cost.

Decentralized Asset Custody Scheme with Security against Rational Adversary

Asset custody is a core financial service in which the custodian holds in-safekeeping assets on behalf of the client. Although traditional custody service is typically endorsed by centralized authorities, decentralized custody scheme has become technically feasible since the emergence of digital assets, and furthermore, it is greatly needed by new applications such as blockchain and DeFi (Decentralized Finance). In this work, we propose a framework of decentralized asset custody scheme that is able to support a large number of custodians and safely hold customer assets of multiple times the value of the total security deposit. The proposed custody scheme distributes custodians and assets into many custodian groups via combinatorial designs, where each group fully controls the assigned assets. Since every custodian group is small, the overhead cost is significantly reduced. The liveness is also improved because even a single alive group would be able to process transactions. The security of this custody scheme is guaranteed under the rational adversary model, such that any adversary corrupting a bounded fraction of custodians cannot move assets more than the security deposit paid. We further analyze the security and performance of our constructions from both theoretical and experimental sides and give explicit examples with concrete numbers and figures for a better understanding of our results.

ComFormer: Code Comment Generation via Transformer and Fusion Method-based Hybrid Code Representation

Developers often write low-quality code comments due to the lack of programming experience, which can reduce the efficiency of developers program comprehension. Therefore, developers hope that code comment generation tools can be developed to illustrate the functionality and purpose of the code. Recently, researchers mainly model this problem as the neural machine translation problem and tend to use deep learning-based methods. In this study, we propose a novel method ComFormer based on Transformer and fusion method-based hybrid code presentation. Moreover, to alleviate OOV (out-of-vocabulary) problem and speed up model training, we further utilize the Byte-BPE algorithm to split identifiers and Sim_SBT method to perform AST Traversal. We compare ComFormer with seven state-of-the-art baselines from code comment generation and neural machine translation domains. Comparison results show the competitiveness of ComFormer in terms of three performance measures. Moreover, we perform a human study to verify that ComFormer can generate high-quality comments.
