Robust optimization and uncertainty quantification in the nonlinear mechanics of an elevator brake system

This paper deals with nonlinear mechanics of an elevator brake system subjected to uncertainties. A deterministic model that relates the braking force with uncertain parameters is deduced from mechanical equilibrium conditions. In order to take into account parameters variabilities, a parametric probabilistic approach is employed. In this stochastic formalism, the uncertain parameters are modeled as random variables, with distributions specified by the maximum entropy principle. The uncertainties are propagated by the Monte Carlo method, which provides a detailed statistical characterization of the response. This work still considers the optimum design of the brake system, formulating and solving nonlinear optimization problems, with and without the uncertainties effects.

Influence of the potential barrier switching frequency on the effectiveness of energy harvesting

Dynamical systems for kinetic energy harvesting have recently been designed that use nonlinear mechanical resonators and corresponding transducers to create electrical output. Nonlinearities are important for providing a broadband input frequency efficiency, which is necessary to ensure that the output voltage is at a satisfactory level in the case of a variable ambient vibration source. In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of such a system with the additional possibility of a switching potential barrier in the nonlinear resonator. In order to improve the effectiveness of the energy harvester, we numerically test the possibility of using abrupt changes in the system parameters. We analyze the voltage output for various frequencies of both the harmonic excitations and the potential barrier switching. In a range that includes low and high switching frequencies of potentials, the periodic solutions dominate in the bifurcation diagrams. With regard to the large switching frequency, the effective values of the voltage at the piezoelectric electrodes are significantly reduced. The highest effective values of the voltage that are induced at the piezoelectric electrodes are observed when the chaotic solutions appear due to their specific ability to pass the potential barrier for relatively small excitation. The results also show that mechanical damping with high-enough magnitudes minimize the influence of the transient states caused by the switching potentials.

Impulse excitation diagram as a tool to achieve high energy orbits

The paper presents the application of a new impulse excitation diagram (IED) to help realize high-energy orbits in nonlinear energy harvesting systems. In the case of non-linearity, we can deal with the occurrence of coexisting solutions and the proposed diagram allows for the use of the impulse excitation method in order to change the solution. For this purpose, the author's IED diagram was presented to determine the characteristics, duration and moment of initiation of the external disturbing impulse in order to jump to another orbit. An application example is the quasizero energy harvester and two different impulse characteristics.

Dynamics of stainless steel turning: Analysis by flicker-noise spectroscopy

We use flicker-noise spectroscopy (FNS), a phenomenological method for the analysis of time and spatial series operating on structure functions and power spectrum estimates, to identify and study harmful chatter vibrations in a regenerative turning process. The 3D cutting force components experimentally measured during stainless steel turning are analyzed, and the parameters of their stochastic dynamics are estimated. Our analysis shows that the system initially exhibiting regular vibrations associated with spindle rotation becomes unstable to high-frequency noisy oscillations (chatter) at larger cutting depths. We suggest that the chatter may be attributed to frictional stick-and-slip interactions between the contact surfaces of cutting tool and workpiece. We compare our findings with previously reported results obtained by statistical, recurrence, multifractal, and wavelet methods. We discuss the potential of FNS in monitoring the turning process in manufacturing practice.

Transition to chaos and escape phenomenon in two degrees of freedom oscillator with a kinematic excitation

We study the dynamics of a two-degrees-of-freedom (two DOF) nonlinear oscillator representing a quartercar model excited by a road roughness profile. Modelling the road profile by means of a harmonic function we derive the Melnikov criterion for a system transition to chaos or escape. The analytically obtained estimations are confirmed by numerical simulations. To analyze the transient vibrations we used recurrences.

Band filling effects on coherence lengths and penetration depth in the two-orbital negative-U Hubbard model of superconductivity

The two-orbital superconducting state is modeled by on-site intra-orbital negative-U Hubbard correlations together with inter-orbital pair-transfer interactions. The critical temperature is mainly governed by intra-orbital attractive interactions and it can pass through an additional maximum as a function of band filling. For the certain number of electrons the clear interband proximity effect is observable in the superconducting state of the band with a smaller gap. The influence of band fillings and orbital site energies on the temperature dependencies of two-component superconductivity coherence lengths and magnetic field penetration depth is analyzed. The presence of proximity effect is probably reflected in the relative temperature behaviour of characteristic lengths.

Nonlinear dynamics of a regenerative cutting process

We examine the regenerative cutting process by using a single degree of freedom non-smooth model with a friction component and a time delay term. Instead of the standard Lyapunov exponent calculations, we propose a statistical 0-1 test analysis for chaos detection. This approach reveals the nature of the cutting process signaling regular or chaotic dynamics. For the investigated deterministic model we are able to show a transition from chaotic to regular motion with increasing cutting speed. For two values of time delay showing the different response the results have been confirmed by the means of the spectral density and the multiscaled entropy.

Cracked rotor vibrations by multifractal analysis

Multifractal analysis has been used to diagnoze cracked and healthy rotors. Is has been shown that the complexity and regularity criteria of the dynamical systems defined by the multiple scaling of the time series can indicate the damages of the rotating shaft.

Intermittent behaviour of a Cracked Rotor in the resonance region

Vibrations of the Jeffcott rotor are modelled by a three degree of freedom system including coupling between lateral and torsional modes. The crack in a rotating shaft of the rotor is introduced via time dependent stiffness with off diagonal couplings. Applying the external torque to the system allows to observe the effect of crack "breathing" and gain insight into the system. It is manifested in the complex dynamic behaviour of the rotor in the region of internal resonance, showing a quasi--periodic motion or even non-periodic behaviour. In the present paper report, we show the system response to the external torque excitation using nonlinear analysis tools such as bifurcation diagram, phase portraits, Poincare maps and wavelet power spectrum. In the region of resonance we study intermittent motions based on laminar phases interrupted by a series nonlinear beats.

Response of a Magneto-Rheological Fluid Damper Subjected to Periodic Forcing in a High Frequency Limit

We explored vibrations of a single-degree of freedom oscillator with a magneto-rheological damper subjected to kinematic excitations. Using fast and slow scales decoupling procedure we derived an effective damping coefficient in the limit of high frequency excitation. Damping characteristics, as functions of velocity, change considerably especially by terminating the singular non-smoothness points. This effect was more transparent for a larger control parameter which was defined as the product of the excitation amplitude and its frequency.

Vibration of Generalized Double Well Oscillators

We have applied the Melnikov criterion to examine a global homoclinic bifurcation and transition to chaos in a case of a double well dynamical system with a nonlinear fractional damping term and external excitation. The usual double well Duffing potential having a negative square term and positive quartic term has been generalized to a double well potential with a negative square term and a positive one with an arbitrary real exponent $q > 2$. We have also used a fractional damping term with an arbitrary power $p$ applied to velocity which enables one to cover a wide range of realistic damping factors: from dry friction $p \to 0$ to turbulent resistance phenomena $p=2$. Using perturbation methods we have found a critical forcing amplitude $μ_c$ above which the system may behave chaotically. Our results show that the vibrating system is less stable in transition to chaos for smaller $p$ satisfying an exponential scaling low. The critical amplitude $μ_c$ as an exponential function of $p$. The analytical results have been illustrated by numerical simulations using standard nonlinear tools such as Poincare maps and the maximal Lyapunov exponent. As usual for chosen system parameters we have identified a chaotic motion above the critical Melnikov amplitude $μ_c$.

Homoclinic transition to chaos in the Ueda oscillator with external forcing

We examine the Melnikov criterion for transition to chaos in case of a single degree of freedom nonlinear oscillator with the Ueda well potential and an external periodic excitation term. Using effective Hamiltonian we have examined homoclinic orbits and cross-sections of stable and unstable manifolds which gave the condition of transition to chaos through a homoclinic bifurcation.

Stochastic description of the deterministic Ricker's population model

We adopt the '0-1' test for chaos using Brownian motion chains to identify the dynamics of the Ricker's population model. In the '0-1' test '0' is related to regular motion while '1' is associated with chaotic motion. The identified regular and chaotic types of solutions have been confirmed by means of recurrence plots.

Phase lock and rotational motion of a parametric pendulum

The effect of noise on a rotational mode of a pendulum excited kinematically in vertical direction has been analyzed. We have shown that for a weak noise transitions from oscillations to rotations and vice versa are possible. For a moderate noise level dynamics of the system is governed by a combination of the excitation amplitude and stochastic component. Consequently for stronger noise the rotational solution as an independent sychonized mode has vanished.

Wavelet Analysis of Cycle-to-Cycle Pressure Variations in an Internal Combustion Engine

Using a continuous wavelet transform we have analyzed the cycle-to-cycle variations of pressure in an internal combustion engine. The time series of maximum pressure variations are examined for different loading and their wavelet power spectrum is calculated for each load. From the wavelet power spectrum we detected the presence of long, intermediate and short-term periodicities in the pressure signal. It is found that depending on the load, the long and intermediate-term periodicities may span several cycles, whereas the short-period oscillations tend to appear intermittently. Knowledge of these periodicities may be useful to develop effective control strategies for efficient combustion.

Superconducting Pairing Amplitude and Local Density of States in Presence of Repulsive Centers

We study the properties of superconductor in presence of a finite concentration of repulsive centers. The superconductor is described by the negative $U$ Hubbard model while repulsive centers are treated as randomly distributed impurities with repulsive interaction. Analyzing the paring potential and local density of states at impurity sites we find a wide range of the system parameters where the $π$ - like state could possibly be realized. Comparison of our results to the single repulsive center case is also given.
