ODE/IM Correspondence at the Free-Fermion Point. Laguerre Wronskians, Shifted Symmetric Functions, and Quantum KdV

We consider the ODE/IM correspondence for the value $c=-2$ of the Virasoro central charge (free-fermion point) and the associated quantum KdV model $-$ the quantization of the second hamiltonian structure of the classical periodic KdV model. We prove that the ODE/IM correspondence is complete (in the sense of V. Bazhanov, S. Lukyanov, and A. Zamolodchikov), namely that any solution of the Bethe equations coincides with the spectrum of a rational extension of the (quantum) harmonic oscillator. To this end, on the ODE side we consider Crum$-$Darboux transformations of the harmonic oscillator and the associated Laguerre Wronskians, which are remarkable special functions parametrized by pairs of partitions which we study in depth. As a further result, on the IM side, we diagonalize explicitly the first three hamiltonian operators of quantum KdV (in the free field representation): the eigenstates are Schur functions and the eigenvalues are shifted symmetric functions on partitions. We give two applications of this result: i) we prove that the eigenvalues are given by the evaluation of the Newton symmetric polynomials at the poles of the associated monster potentials, as further conjectured by V. Bazhanov, S. Lukyanov, and A. Zamolodchikov; ii) we show that these hamiltonian operators also belong to the algebra of hamiltonian operators obtained by quantizing the first hamiltonian structure of the classical periodic dispersionless KdV model.

On the large genus of Hurwitz numbers

Hurwitz theory provides a large variety of enumerative problems related to algebraic geometry, mathematical physics, and combinatorics. We give a general framework to approach the large genus asymptotics of Hurwitz theory using only elementary methods and apply it to several types of Hurwitz numbers: single, double, or with an arbitrary numbers of fixed ramifications; simple and / or including completed cycles type of ramification and / or finitely many blocks of weakly monotone and / or strictly monotone types of ramifications. These, to the best of our knowledge, cover most of the Hurwitz numbers studied, and include for instance correlators of the HCIZ matrix model, Grothendieck dessins d'enfant, weighted Hurwitz numbers, and Gromov-Witten invariants of the Riemann sphere. We also apply our method to b-content Hurwitz numbers. As a specialisation, we recover some previously known about the large genus asymptotics of Hurwitz theory, namely classical results by Hurwitz and recent results of Do-He-Robertson, C. Yang, and results connected to recent work of X. Li.

Multiplicative Averages of Plancherel Random Partitions: Elliptic Functions, Phase Transitions, and Applications

We consider random integer partitions $\lambda$ that follow the Poissonized Plancherel measure of parameter $t^2$. Using Riemann$-$Hilbert techniques, we establish the asymptotics of the multiplicative averages $$Q(t,s)=\mathbb{E} \left[ \prod_{i\geq 1} \left(1+\mathrm{e}^{\eta(\lambda_i-i+\frac{1}{2}-s)}\right)^{-1} \right] $$ for fixed $\eta>0$ in the regime $t\to+\infty$ and $s/t=O(1)$. We compute the large-$t$ expansion of $\log Q(t,xt)$ expressing the rate function $\mathcal{F}(x) = -\lim_{t \to \infty}t^{-2}\log Q(t,xt)$ and the subsequent divergent and oscillatory contributions explicitly in terms of elliptic theta functions. The associated equilibrium measure presents, in general, nontrivial saturated regions and it undergoes two third-order phase transitions of different nature which we describe. Applications of our results include an explicit characterization of tail probabilities of the height function of the $q$-deformed polynuclear growth model and of the edge of the positive-temperature discrete Bessel process and asymptotics of radially symmetric solutions to the 2D Toda equation with step-like initial data.

Quantum KdV hierarchy and shifted symmetric functions

We study spectral properties of the quantum Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy defined by Buryak and Rossi. We prove that eigenvalues to first order in the dispersion parameter are given by shifted symmetric functions. The proof is based on the boson-fermion correspondence and an analysis of quartic expressions in fermions. As an application, we obtain a closed evaluation of certain double Hodge integrals on the moduli spaces of curves. Finally, we provide an explicit formula for the eigenvectors to first order in the dispersion parameter. In particular, we show that its Schur expansion is supported on partitions for which the Hamming distance is minimal.

Bessel kernel determinants and integrable equations

We derive differential equations for multiplicative statistics of the Bessel determinantal point process depending on two parameters. In particular, we prove that such statistics are solutions to an integrable nonlinear partial differential equation describing isospectral deformations of a Sturm-Liouville equation. We also derive identities relating solutions to the integrable partial differential equation and to the Sturm-Liouville equation which imply an analogue for Painlev\'e V of Amir-Corwin-Quastel "integro-differential Painlev\'e II equation". This equation reduces, in a degenerate limit, to the system of coupled Painlev\'e V equations derived by Charlier and Doeraene for the generating function of the Bessel process, and to the Painlev\'e V equation derived by Tracy and Widom for the gap probability of the Bessel process. Finally, we study an initial value problem for the integrable partial differential equation. The approach is based on Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov theory of integrable operators and their associated Riemann-Hilbert problems.

Jacobi Beta Ensemble and $b$-Hurwitz Numbers

We express correlators of the Jacobi $\beta$ ensemble in terms of (a special case of) $b$-Hurwitz numbers, a deformation of Hurwitz numbers recently introduced by Chapuy and Dolega. The proof relies on Kadell's generalization of the Selberg integral. The Laguerre limit is also considered. All the relevant $b$-Hurwitz numbers are interpreted (following Bonzom, Chapuy, and Dolega) in terms of colored monotone Hurwitz maps.

J\'anossy densities and Darboux transformations for the Stark and cylindrical KdV equations

We study J\'anossy densities of a randomly thinned Airy kernel determinantal point process. We prove that they can be expressed in terms of solutions to the Stark and cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries equations; these solutions are Darboux tranformations of the simpler ones related to the gap probability of the same thinned Airy point process. Moreover, we prove that the associated wave functions satisfy a variation of Amir-Corwin-Quastel's integro-differential Painlev\'e II equation. Finally, we derive tail asymptotics for the relevant solutions to the cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries equation and show that they decompose asymptotically into a superposition of simpler solutions.

Integrable equations associated with the finite-temperature deformation of the discrete Bessel point process

We study the finite-temperature deformation of the discrete Bessel point process. We show that its largest particle distribution satisfies a reduction of the 2D Toda equation, as well as a discrete version of the integro-differential Painlev\'e II equation of Amir-Corwin-Quastel, and we compute initial conditions for the Poissonization parameter equal to 0. As proved by Betea and Bouttier, in a suitable continuum limit the last particle distribution converges to that of the finite-temperature Airy point process. We show that the reduction of the 2D Toda equation reduces to the Korteweg-de Vries equation, as well as the discrete integro-differential Painlev\'e II equation reduces to its continuous version. Our approach is based on the discrete analogue of Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov theory of integrable operators developed by Borodin and Deift.

Quantum KdV hierarchy and quasimodular forms

Dubrovin has shown that the spectrum of the quantization (with respect to the first Poisson structure) of the dispersionless Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy is given by shifted symmetric functions; the latter are related by the Bloch-Okounkov Theorem to quasimodular forms on the full modular group. We extend the relation to quasimodular forms to the full quantum KdV hierarchy (and to the more general quantum Intermediate Long Wave hierarchy). These quantum integrable hierarchies have been defined by Buryak and Rossi in terms of the Double Ramification cycle in the moduli space of curves. The main tool and conceptual contribution of the paper is a general effective criterion for quasimodularity.

Uniform tail asymptotics for Airy kernel determinant solutions to KdV and for the narrow wedge solution to KPZ

We obtain uniform asymptotics for deformed Airy kernel determinants, which arise in models of finite temperature free fermions and which characterize the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The asymptotics for the determinants yield uniform initial data for an associated family of solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and uniform lower tail asymptotics for the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

On the spectral problem of the quantum KdV hierarchy

The spectral problem for the quantum dispersionless Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy, aka the quantum Hopf hierarchy, is solved by Dubrovin. In this article, following Dubrovin, we study Buryak-Rossi's quantum KdV hierarchy. In particular, we prove a symmetry property and a non-degeneracy property for the quantum KdV Hamiltonians. On the basis of this we construct a complete set of common eigenvectors. The analysis underlying this spectral problem implies certain vanishing identities for combinations of characters of the symmetric group. We also comment on the geometry of the spectral curves of the quantum KdV hierarchy and we give a representation of the quantum dispersionless KdV Hamiltonians in terms of multiplication operators in the class algebra of the symmetric group.

Higgs fields, non-abelian Cauchy kernels and the Goldman symplectic structure

We consider the moduli space of vector bundles of rank $n$ and degree $ng$ over a fixed Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$. We use the explicit parametrization in terms of the Tyurin data. In the moduli space there is a "non-abelian" Theta divisor, consisting of bundles with $h^1\geq 1$. On the complement of this divisor we construct a non-abelian Cauchy kernel explicitly in terms of the Tyurin data. With the additional datum of a non-special divisor, we can construct a reference flat holomorphic connection which is also dependent holomorphically on the moduli of the bundle. This allows us to identify the bundle of Higgs fields, i.e. the cotangent bundle of the moduli space, with the affine bundle of holomorphic connections and provide a monodromy map into the ${\rm GL}_n$ character variety. We show that the Goldman symplectic structure on the character variety pulls back along this map to the complex canonical symplectic structure on the cotangent bundle and hence also on the space of affine connections. The pull-back of the Liouville one-form to the affine bundle of connections is then shown to be a logarithmic form with poles along the non-abelian theta divisor and residue given by $h^1$.

Jacobi Ensemble, Hurwitz Numbers and Wilson Polynomials

We express the topological expansion of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble in terms of triple monotone Hurwitz numbers. This completes the combinatorial interpretation of the topological expansion of the classical unitary invariant matrix ensembles. We also provide effective formulae for generating functions of multipoint correlators of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble in terms of Wilson polynomials, generalizing the known relations between one point correlators and Wilson polynomials.

Airy kernel determinant solutions to the KdV equation and integro-differential Painlev\'e equations

We study a family of unbounded solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation which can be constructed as log-derivatives of deformed Airy kernel Fredholm determinants, and which are connected to an integro-differential version of the second Painlev\'e equation. The initial data of the Korteweg-de Vries solutions are well-defined for $x>0$, but not for $x<0$, where the solutions behave like $\frac{x}{2t}$ as $t\to 0$, and hence would be well-defined as solutions of the cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries equation. We provide uniform asymptotics in $x$ as $t\to 0$; for $x>0$ they involve an integro-differential analogue of the Painlev\'e V equation. A special case of our results yields improved estimates for the {tails} of the narrow wedge solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Matrix models for stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of the Riemann sphere

Inspired by recent formul\ae\ of Dubrovin, Yang, and Zagier, we interpret the tau function enumerating stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ as an isomonodromic tau function associated with a difference equation. As a byproduct we obtain an analogue of the Kontsevich matrix model for this tau function. A connection with the Charlier ensemble is also considered.

Laguerre Ensemble: Correlators, Hurwitz Numbers and Hodge Integrals

We consider the Laguerre partition function, and derive explicit generating functions for connected correlators with arbitrary integer powers of traces in terms of products of Hahn polynomials. It was recently proven that correlators have a topological expansion in terms of weakly or strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers, that can be explicitly computed from our formulae. As a second result we identify the Laguerre partition function with only positive couplings and a special value of the parameter $\alpha=-1/2$ with the modified GUE partition function, which has recently been introduced as a generating function of Hodge integrals. This identification provides a direct and new link between monotone Hurwitz numbers and Hodge integrals.

Brezin-Gross-Witten tau function and isomonodromic deformations

The Brezin-Gross-Witten tau function is a tau function of the KdV hierarchy which arises in the weak coupling phase of the Brezin-Gross-Witten model. It falls within the family of generalized Kontsevich matrix integrals, and its algebro--geometric interpretation has been unveiled in recent works of Norbury. We prove that a suitably generalized Brezin-Gross-Witten tau function is the isomonodromic tau function of a $2\times 2$ isomonodromic system and consequently present a study of this tau function purely by means of this isomonodromic interpretation. Within this approach we derive effective formul\ae\ for the generating functions of the correlators in terms of simple generating series, the Virasoro constraints, and discuss the relation with the Painlev\'{e} XXXIV hierarchy.

The Kontsevich-Penner matrix integral, isomonodromic tau functions and open intersection numbers

We identify the Kontsevich-Penner matrix integral, for finite size $n$, with the isomonodromic tau function of a $3\times 3$ rational connection on the Riemann sphere with $n$ Fuchsian singularities placed in correspondence with the eigenvalues of the external field of the matrix integral. By formulating the isomonodromic system in terms of an appropriate Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem, we can pass to the limit $n\to\infty$ (at a formal level) and identify an isomonodromic system in terms of the Miwa variables, which play the role of times of the KP hierarchy. This allows to derive the String and Dilaton equations via a purely Riemann-Hilbert approach. The expression of the formal limit of the partition function as an isomonodromic tau function allows us to derive explicit closed formul\ae\ for the correlators of this matrix model in terms of the solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem with all times set to zero. These correlators have been conjectured to describe the intersection numbers for Riemann surfaces with boundaries, or open intersection numbers.
