Isoperimetric and Michael-Simon inequalities on manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative curvature

We establish the validity of the isoperimetric inequality (or equivalently, an $L^1$ Euclidean-type Sobolev inequality) on manifolds with asymptotically non-negative sectional curvature. Unlike previous results in the literature, our approach does not require the negative part of the curvature to be globally small. Furthermore, we derive a Michael-Simon inequality on manifolds whose curvature is non-negative outside a compact set. The proofs employ the ABP method for isoperimetry, initially introduced by Cabré in the Euclidean setting and subsequently extended and skillfully adapted by Brendle to the challenging context of non-negatively curved manifolds. Notably, we show that this technique can be localized to appropriate regions of the manifold. Additional key elements of the argument include the geometric structure at infinity of asymptotically non-negatively curved manifolds, their spectral properties - which ensure the non-negativity of a Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor on a conformal deformation of each end - and a result that deduces the validity of the isoperimetric inequality on the entire manifold, provided it holds outside a compact set.

Sobolev and Michael-Simon inequalities via the ABP method beyond Euclidean volume growth

We develop an ABP approach to Sobolev and Michael-Simon type inequalities under volume noncollapsing assumptions. The main new observation is a refinement of Brendle's contact-set argument: the ABP image contains the full geodesic ball centered at the minimum point of the Neumann potential, with radius equal to the ABP parameter. This allows one to use lower bounds for the volumes of geodesic balls, either at a fixed scale or under prescribed volume-growth assumptions, rather than positive asymptotic volume ratio. The central application is a Michael-Simon type inequality for immersed submanifolds of ambient manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and volume noncollapsing. The resulting inequality contains a lower-order term determined by the noncollapsing scale and applies to submanifolds with controlled mean curvature. In the intrinsic case, the same method gives an ABP proof of Varopoulos' $L^{1}$-Sobolev inequality with lower-order term, identifying the optimal constant in front of the gradient term, as well as explicit lower bounds for the isoperimetric profile in terms of lower bounds on the volumes of geodesic balls. Further geometric applications include Topping-type diameter estimates for submanifolds involving the $L^{n-1}$-norm of the mean curvature and various heat kernel and spectral estimates in the minimal case.

Asymptotically non-negative Ricci curvature, elliptic Kato constant and isoperimetric inequalities

The ABP method for proving isoperimetric inequalities has been first employed by Cabré in $\mathbb{R}^n$, then developed by Brendle, notably in the context of non-compact Riemannian manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature and positive asymptotic volume ratio. In this paper, we expand upon their approach and prove isoperimetric inequalities (sharp in the limit) in the presence of a small amount of negative curvature. First, we consider smallness of the negative part $\mathrm{Ric}_-$ of the Ricci curvature in terms of its elliptic Kato constant. Indeed, the Kato constant turns out to control the non-negativity of the ($\infty$-)Bakry-Émery Ricci-tensor of a suitable conformal deformation of the manifold, and the ABP method can be implemented in this setting. Secondly, we show that the smallness of the Kato constant is ensured provided that the asymptotic volume ratio is positive and either $M$ has one end and asymptotically non-negative sectional curvature, or there is a suitable polynomial decay of $\mathrm{Ric}_{-}$, and the relative volume comparison condition known as $\textbf{(VC)}$ holds. To show this latter fact, we enhance techniques elaborated by Li-Tam and Kasue to obtain new estimates of the Green function valid on the whole manifold.

Hardy--Littlewood maximal operators on certain manifolds with bounded geometry

In this paper we study the $L^p$ boundedness of the centred and the uncentred Hardy--Littlewood maximal operators on certain Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. Our results complement those of various authors. We show that, under mild assumptions, $L^p$ estimates for the centred operator are ``stable'' under conformal changes of the metric, and prove sharp~$L^p$ estimates for the centred operator on Riemannian models with pinched negative scalar curvature. Furthermore, we prove that the centred operator is of weak type $(1,1)$ on the connected sum of two space forms with negative curvature, whereas the uncentred operator is, perhaps surprisingly, bounded only on $L^\infty$. We also prove that if two locally doubling geodesic metric measure spaces enjoying the uniform ball size condition are strictly quasi-isometric, then they share the same boundedness properties for both the centred and the uncentred maximal operator. Finally, we discuss some $L^p$ mapping properties for the centred operator on a specific Riemannian surface introduced by Strömberg, providing new interesting results.

Unique continuation at infinity: Carleman estimates on general warped cylinders

We obtain a vanishing result for solutions of the inequality $|Δu|\le q_1|u|+q_2|\nabla u|$ that decay to zero along a very general warped cylindrical end of a Riemannian manifold. The appropriate decay condition at infinity on $u$ is related to the behavior of the potential functions $q_1$ and $q_2$ and to the asymptotic geometry of the end. The main ingredient is a new Carleman estimate of independent interest. Geometric applications to conformal deformations and to minimal graphs are presented.

A new notion of subharmonicity on locally smoothing spaces, and a conjecture by Braverman, Milatovic, Shubin

Given a strongly local Dirichlet space and $λ\geq 0$, we introduce a new notion of $λ$--subharmonicity for $L^1_\loc$--functions, which we call \emph{local $λ$--shift defectivity}, and which turns out to be equivalent to distributional $λ$--subharmonicity in the Riemannian case. We study the regularity of these functions on a new class of strongly local Dirichlet, so called locally smoothing spaces, which includes Riemannian manifolds (without any curvature assumptions), finite dimensional RCD spaces, Carnot groups, and Sierpinski gaskets. As a byproduct of this regularity theory, we obtain in this general framework a proof of a conjecture by Braverman, Milatovic, Shubin on the positivity of distributional $L^q$-solutions of $Δf\leq f$ for complete Riemannian manifolds.

$L^p$ positivity preservation and self-adjointness on incomplete Riemannian manifolds

The aim of this paper is to prove a qualitative property, namely the preservation of positivity, for Schrödinger-type operators acting on $L^p$ functions defined on (possibly incomplete) Riemannian manifolds. A key assumption is a control of the behaviour of the potential of the operator near the Cauchy boundary of the manifolds. As a by-product, we establish the essential self-adjointness of such operators, as well as its generalization to the case $p\neq 2$, i.e. the fact that smooth compactly supported functions are an operator core for the Schrödinger operator in $L^p$.

Isoperimetric inequalities and regularity of $A$-harmonic functions on surfaces

We investigate the logarithmic and power-type convexity of the length of the level curves for $a$-harmonic functions on smooth surfaces and related isoperimetric inequalities. In particular, our analysis covers the $p$-harmonic and the minimal surface equations. As an auxiliary result, we obtain higher Sobolev regularity properties of the solutions, including the $W^{2,2}$ regularity. The results are complemented by a number of estimates for the derivatives $L'$ and $L''$ of the length of the level curve function $L$, as well as by examples illustrating the presentation. Our work generalizes results due to Alessandrini, Longinetti, Talenti and Lewis in the Euclidean setting, as well as a recent article of ours devoted to the harmonic case on surfaces.

Approximation, regularity and positivity preservation on Riemannian manifolds

The paper focuses on the $L^{p}$-Positivity Preservation property ($L^{p}$-PP for short) on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. It states that any $L^p$ function $u$ with $1<p<+\infty$, which solves $(-Δ+ 1)u\ge 0$ on $M$ in the sense of distributions must be non-negative. Our main result is that the $L^{p}$-PP holds if (the possibly incomplete) $M$ has a finite number of ends with respect to some compact domain, each of which is $q$-parabolic for some, possibly different, values $2p/(p-1) < q \leq +\infty$. When $p=2$, since $\infty$-parabolicity coincides with geodesic completeness, our result settles in the affirmative a conjecture by M. Braverman, O. Milatovic and M. Shubin in 2002. On the other hand, we also show that the $L^{p}$-PP is stable by removing from a complete manifold a possibly singular set with Hausdorff co-dimension strictly larger than $2p/(p-1)$ or with a uniform Minkowski-type upper estimate of order $2p/(p-1)$. The threshold value $2p/(p-1)$ is sharp as we show that when the Hausdorff co-dimension of the removed set is strictly smaller, then the $L^{p}$-PP fails. This gives a rather complete picture. The tools developed to carry out our investigations include smooth monotonic approximation and consequent regularity results for subharmonic distributions, a manifold version of the Brezis-Kato inequality, Liouville-type theorems in low regularity, removable singularities results for $L^{p}$-subharmonic distributions and a Frostman-type lemma. Since the seminal works by T. Kato, the $L^{p}$-PP has been linked to the spectral theory of Schrödinger operators with singular potentials $Δ- V$. Here we present some applications of the main results of this paper to the case where $V\in L^p_{loc}$, addressing the essential self-adjointness of the operator when $p=2$ and whether or not $C^\infty_c(M)$ is an operator core for $Δ-V$ in $L^p$.

$L^{p}$ Positivity Preserving and a conjecture by M. Braverman, O. Milatovic and M. Shubin

In this paper we prove that a complete Riemannian manifold is $L^p$-positivity preserving for any $p\in(1,\infty)$. This means that any $L^p$ function which solves $(-Δ+ 1)u\ge 0$ in the sense of distributions is necessarily non-negative. In particular, the case $p=2$ of our result answers in the affermative a conjecture formulated by M. Braverman, O. Milatovic and M. Shubin in 2002. The two main ingredients are a new a-priori regularity result for positive subharmonic distributions, which in turn permits to prove a Liouville type theorem, and a Brezis-Kato inequality on Riemannian manifolds. Both these results rely on a smooth monotonic approximation of distributional solutions of $Δu \ge λ(x) u$ of independent interest.

Gradient estimates under integral Ricci bounds

In this paper we study $W^{1,p}$ global regularity estimates for solutions of $Δu = f$ on Riemannian manifolds. Under integral (lower) bounds on the Ricci tensor we prove the validity of $L^p$-gradient estimates of the form $|| \nabla u ||_{L^p} \le C (|| u ||_{L^p} + || Δu||_{L^p})$. We also construct a counterexample which proves that the previously known constant lower bounds on the Ricci curvature are optimal in the pointwise sense. The relation between $L^p$-gradient estimates and different notions of Sobolev spaces is also investigated.

$L^{p}$ gradient estimates and Calderón--Zygmund inequalities under Ricci lower bounds

In this paper we investigate the validity of first and second order $L^{p}$ estimates for the solutions of the Poisson equation depending on the geometry of the underlying manifold. We first present $L^{p}$ estimates of the gradient under the assumption that the Ricci tensor is lower bounded in a local integral sense and construct the first counterexample showing that they are false, in general, without curvature restrictions. Next, we obtain $L^p$ estimates for the second order Riesz transform (or, equivalently, the validity of $L^{p}$ Calderón--Zygmund inequalities) on the whole scale $1<p<+\infty$ by assuming that the injectivity radius is positive and that the Ricci tensor is either pointwise lower bounded or non-negative in a global integral sense. When $1<p \leq 2$, analogous $L^p$ bounds on even higher order Riesz transforms are obtained provided that also the derivatives of Ricci are controlled up to a suitable order. In the same range of values of $p$, for manifolds with lower Ricci bounds and positive bottom of the spectrum, we show that the $L^{p}$ norm of the Laplacian controls the whole $W^{2,p}$-norm on compactly supported functions.

Inclusions and noninclusions of Hardy type spaces on certain nondoubling manifolds

In this paper we establish inclusions and noninclusions between various Hardy type spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds $M$ with Ricci curvature bounded from below, positive injectivity radius and spectral gap. Our first main result states that, if $\mathscr{L}$ is the positive Laplace-Beltrami operator on $M$, then the Riesz-Hardy space $H^1_\mathscr{R}(M)$ is the isomorphic image of the Goldberg type space $\mathfrak{h}^1(M)$ via the map $\mathscr{L}^{1/2} (\mathscr{I} + \mathscr{L})^{-1/2}$, a fact that is false in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Specifically, $H^1_\mathscr{R}(M)$ agrees with the Hardy type space $\mathfrak{X}^{1/2}(M)$ recently introduced by the the first three authors; as a consequence, we prove that $\mathfrak{h}^1(M)$ does not admit an atomic characterisation. Noninclusions are mostly proved in the special case where the manifold is a Damek-Ricci space $S$. Our second main result states that $H^1_\mathscr{R}(S)$, the heat Hardy space $H^1_\mathscr{H}(S)$ and the Poisson-Hardy space $H^1_\mathscr{P}(S)$ are mutually distinct spaces, a fact which is in sharp contrast to the Euclidean case, where these three spaces agree.

Some functional properties on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds of very negative curvature

In this paper we consider Cartan-Hadamard manifolds (i.e. simply connected of non-positive sectional curvature) whose negative Ricci curvature grows polynomially at infinity. We show that a number of functional properties, which typically hold when the curvature is bounded, remain true in this setting. These include the characterization of Sobolev spaces on manifolds, the so-called Caldéron-Zygmund inequalities and the $L^p$-positivity preserving property, i.e. $u\in L^p\ \&\ (-Δ+ 1)u\ge 0 \Rightarrow u\ge 0$. The main tool is a new class of first and second order Hardy-type inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds with a polynomial upper bound on the curvature. In the last part of the manuscript we prove the $L^p$-positivity preserving property, $p\in[1,+\infty]$, on manifolds with subquadratic negative part of the Ricci curvature. This generalizes an idea of B. Güneysu and gives a new proof of a well-known condition for the stochastic completeness due to P. Hsu.

Density and non-density of $C^\infty_c \hookrightarrow W^{k,p}$ on complete manifolds with curvature bounds

We investigate the density of compactly supported smooth functions in the Sobolev space $W^{k,p}$ on complete Riemannian manifolds. In the first part of the paper, we extend to the full range $p\in [1,2]$ the most general results known in the Hilbertian case. In particular, we obtain the density under a quadratic Ricci lower bound (when $k=2$) or a suitably controlled growth of the derivatives of the Riemann curvature tensor only up to order $k-3$ (when $k>2$). To this end, we prove a gradient regularity lemma that might be of independent interest. In the second part of the paper, for every $n \ge 2$ and $p>2$ we construct a complete $n$-dimensional manifold with sectional curvature bounded from below by a negative constant, for which the density property in $W^{k,p}$ does not hold for any $k \ge 2$. We also deduce the existence of a counterexample to the validity of the Calderón-Zygmund inequality for $p>2$ when $\mathrm{Sec} \ge 0$, and in the compact setting we show the impossibility to build a Calderón-Zygmund theory for $p>2$ with constants only depending on a bound on the diameter and a lower bound on the sectional curvature.

Isoperimetric inequalities and geometry of level curves of harmonic functions on smooth and singular surfaces

We investigate the logarithmic convexity of the length of the level curves for harmonic functions on surfaces and related isoperimetric type inequalities. The results deal with smooth surfaces, as well as with singular Alexandrov surfaces (also called surfaces with bounded integral curvature), a class which includes for instance surfaces with conical singularities and surfaces of CAT(0) type. Moreover, we study the geodesic curvature of the level curves and of the steepest descent for harmonic functions on surfaces with non-necessarily constant Gaussian curvature $K$. Such geodesic curvature functions turn out to satisfy certain Laplace-type equations and inequalities, from which we infer various maximum and minimum principles. The results are complemented by a number of growth estimates for the derivatives $L'$ and $L''$ of the length of the level curve function $L$, as well as by examples illustrating the presentation. Our work generalizes some results due to Alessandrini, Longinetti, Talenti, Ma--Zhang and Wang--Wang.

Higher order distance-like functions and Sobolev spaces

We consider complete Riemannian manifolds with a controlled growth of the covariant derivatives of Ricci curvatures up to order $k-2$ and a controlled decay of the injectivity radii. On such manifolds we construct distance-like functions with a control on covariant derivatives up to order $k$. Alternatively, the assumption on the injectivity radii can be replaced with the request of a controlled growth of the full curvature tensor at order $0$. The control in the assumptions occur via non-necessarily polynomial growth functions. This construction largely extend previously known results in various directions, permitting to obtain consequences which are (in a sense) sharp. A first main application is to the study of the density property for Sobolev spaces on Riemannian manifolds, namely the problem of guaranteeing the density of smooth compactly supported function in the Sobolev space $W^{k,p}$. Contrary to all previously known results this can be obtained also on manifolds with possibly unbounded geometry. In the particular case $p=2$, making use of the Weitzenböck formula for a Lichnerowicz Laplacian acting on the space of smooth section of the bundle of $k$-covariant symmetric tensors, we can weaken the assumptions needed to obtain the density property. Namely we prove that the control on the highest order derivative of curvature is not needed in this situation. Beyond the density property we finally highlight some new applications of our results to disturbed Sobolev inequalities, disturbed $L^{p}$-Calderón-Zygmund inequalities and the full Omori-Yau maximum principle for the Hessian.

The $L^p$-Calderón-Zygmund inequality on non-compact manifolds of positive curvature

We construct, for $p>n$, a concrete example of a complete non-compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold of positive sectional curvature which does not support any $L^p$-Calderón-Zygmund inequality: \[ \forall\,φ\in C^{\infty}_c(M),\qquad\|\operatorname{Hess} φ\|_{L^p}\le C(\|φ\|_{L^p}+\|Δφ\|_{L^p}). \] The proof proceeds by local deformations of an initial metric which (locally) Gromov-Hausdorff converge to an Alexandrov space. In particular, we develop on some recent interesting ideas by G. De Philippis and J. Núñez-Zimbron dealing with the case of compact manifolds. As a straightforward consequence, we obtain that the $L^p$-gradient estimates and the $L^p$-Calderón-Zygmund inequalities are generally not equivalent, thus answering an open question in literature. Finally, our example gives also a contribution to the study of the (non-)equivalence of different definitions of Sobolev spaces on manifolds.
