FunTuple: A new N-tuple component for offline data processing at the LHCb experiment

The offline software framework of the LHCb experiment has undergone a significant overhaul to tackle the data processing challenges that will arise in the upcoming Run 3 and Run 4 of the Large Hadron Collider. This paper introduces FunTuple, a novel component developed for offline data processing within the LHCb experiment. This component enables the computation and storage of a diverse range of observables for both reconstructed and simulated events by leveraging on the tools initially developed for the trigger system. This feature is crucial for ensuring consistency between trigger-computed and offline-analysed observables. The component and its tool suite offer users flexibility to customise stored observables, and its reliability is validated through a full-coverage set of rigorous unit tests. This paper comprehensively explores FunTuple's design, interface, interaction with other algorithms, and its role in facilitating offline data processing for the LHCb experiment for the next decade and beyond.

Performance of the GridPix detector quad

A gaseous pixel readout module with four GridPix chips, called the quad, has been developed as a building block for a large time projection chamber readout plane. The quad module has dimensions 39.6 mm $\times$ 28.38 mm and an active surface coverage of 68.9%. The GridPix chip consists of a Timepix3 chip with integrated amplification grid and have a high efficiency to detect single ionisation electrons, which enable to make a precise track position measurement. A quad module was installed in a small time projection chamber and measurements of 2.5 GeV electrons were performed at the ELSA accelerator in Bonn, where a silicon telescope was used to provide a reference track. The error on the track position measurement, both in the pixel plane and drift direction, is dominated by diffusion. The quad was designed to have minimum electrical field inhomogeneities and distortions, achieving systematics of better than 13 $\mu$m in the pixel plane. The resolution of the setup is 41 $\mu$m, where the total systematic error of the quad detector is 24 $\mu$m.

HEP Community White Paper on Software trigger and event reconstruction

Realizing the physics programs of the planned and upgraded high-energy physics (HEP) experiments over the next 10 years will require the HEP community to address a number of challenges in the area of software and computing. For this reason, the HEP software community has engaged in a planning process over the past two years, with the objective of identifying and prioritizing the research and development required to enable the next generation of HEP detectors to fulfill their full physics potential. The aim is to produce a Community White Paper which will describe the community strategy and a roadmap for software and computing research and development in HEP for the 2020s. The topics of event reconstruction and software triggers were considered by a joint working group and are summarized together in this document.

The upgrade of the LHCb trigger system

The LHCb experiment will operate at a luminosity of $2\times10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ during LHC Run 3. At this rate the present readout and hardware Level-0 trigger become a limitation, especially for fully hadronic final states. In order to maintain a high signal efficiency the upgraded LHCb detector will deploy two novel concepts: a triggerless readout and a full software trigger.

Decay time integrals in neutral meson mixing and their efficient evaluation

In neutral meson mixing, a certain class of convolution integrals is required whose solution involves the error function $\mathrm{erf}(z)$ of a complex argument $z$. We show the the general shape of the analytic solution of these integrals, and give expressions which allow the normalisation of these expressions for use in probability density functions. Furthermore, we derive expressions which allow a (decay time) acceptance to be included in these integrals, or allow the calculation of moments. We also describe the implementation of numerical routines which allow the numerical evaluation of $w(z)=e^{-z^2}(1-\mathrm{erf}(-iz))$, sometimes also called Faddeeva function, in C++. These new routines improve over the old CERNLIB routine(s) WWERF/CWERF in terms of both speed and accuracy. These new routines are part of the RooFit package, and have been distributed with it since ROOT version 5.34/08.

Measurement of the CP violation phase $\phi_s$ in the $B_s$ system at LHCb

The interference between Bs decay amplitudes to CP eigenstates Jpsi X directly or including Bs-Bsbar oscillation gives rise to a measurable CP violating phase phi_s. Here, a preliminary measurement of phi_s with Bs -> JpsiK+K- decays, and the measurement using Bs->Jpsipi+pi- decays, both obtained from a sample of 1/fb of pp collisions, collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy sqrt{s}=7 TeV during 2011, are presented. In addition, the determination of the branching fraction and polarization fractions of Bs->JpsiKstbar, which can be used to constrain the contribution of sub-leading penguin contributions to the decay Bs->Jpsi phi, is shown.

sin(2beta): Status and Prospects

An overview of the observation of CP violation in the neutral B system, and the measurements of the CP violating asymmetry sin(2beta) with B to charmonium K^0_{S,L} events, performed by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the SLAC and KEK B factories is given. In addition, the measurements of sin(2beta) with several other modes are described, including B to phi KS, which, as the leading contribution is from a loop diagram, could be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model.

Measurements of Lifetimes, Mixing and CP Violation of B Mesons with the BaBar Detector

Using a data sample of 62 million \FourS\to B\Bbar decays collected between 1999 and 2001 by the BaBar detector at the PEP2 asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC we study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing a charmonium meson and the flavour of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin(2 beta), is derived from the decay time distributions. We measure sin(2 beta) = 0.75 \pm 0.09 (stat) \pm 0.04 (syst) and |λ| = 0.92 \pm 0.06 (stat) \pm 0.02 (syst). The latter is consistent with the Standard Model expectation of no direct CP violation. These results are preliminary. In addition, we report on precision measurements of the B lifetimes, and the \Bz-\Bzb oscillation frequency \deltamd.
