The structure of solution spaces for fractional-order operators, with gradient estimates

The solution space of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta )^{a}$ ($0 1/2$, e.g. estimating $d^{1-a+s}\nabla (u/d^a)$ in terms of norms of $f$ and $u$, both in $H_q^t$-spaces and $C_*^t$-spaces. This is entirely new in the case of Bessel-potential spaces; it extends previous results by Fall and Jarohs in H\"older spaces. A new tool is introduced: $\dot H^{s+t}_q(\bar\Omega)\subset d^s\dot H^{t}_q(\bar\Omega)$ holds for $s,t\ge 0$ with $s+t<\tau $.

Maximal $L_p$-regularity for $x$-dependent fractional heat equations with Dirichlet conditions

We prove optimal regularity results in $L_p$-based function spaces in space and time for a large class of linear parabolic equations with a nonlocal elliptic operator in bounded domains with limited smoothness. Here the nonlocal operator is given by a strongly elliptic and even pseudodifferential operator of order $2a$ ($0<a<1$) with nonsmooth $x$-dependent coefficients. This includes the prominent case of the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^a$, as well as elliptic operators $(-\nabla \cdot A(x)\nabla+b(x))^a$. The proofs are based on general results on maximal $L_p$-regularity and its relation to $\mathcal{R}$-boundedness of the resolvent of the associated (elliptic) operator. Finally, we apply these results to show existence of strong solutions locally in time for a class of nonlinear nonlocal parabolic equations, which include a fractional nonlinear diffusion equation and a fractional porous medium equation after a transformation. The nonlinear results are new for operators on domains with boundary; the linear results are so when $P$ is $x$-dependent nonsymmetric.

Weyl asymptotics for fractional-order Dirichlet realizations in nonsmooth cases

Let $P$ be a symmetric $2a$-order classical strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator with even symbol $p(x,\xi )$ on $R^n$ ($0<a<1$), for example a perturbation of $(-\Delta )^a$. Let $\Omega \subset R^n$ be bounded, and let $P_D$ be the Dirichlet realization in $L_2(\Omega )$ defined under the exterior condition $u=0$ in $R^n\setminus\Omega $. When $p(x,\xi )$ and $\Omega $ are $C^\infty $, it is known that the eigenvalues $\lambda _j$ (ordered in a nondecreasing sequence for $j\to\infty $) satisfy a Weyl asymptotic formula $$ \lambda _j(P_{D})=C(P,\Omega )j^{2a/n}+o(j^{2a/n})\text{ for }j\to \infty, $$ with $C(P,\Omega )$ determined from the principal symbol of $P$. We now show that this result is valid for more general operators with a possibly nonsmooth $x$-dependence, over Lipschitz domains, and that it extends to $\tilde P=P+P'+P''$, where $P'$ is an operator of order $<\min\{2a, a+\frac12\}$ with certain mapping properties, and $P''$ is bounded in $L_2(\Omega )$ (e.g. $P''=V(x)\in L_\infty (\Omega )$). Also the regularity of eigenfunctions of $P_D$ is discussed.

Fourier methods for fractional-order operators

This is a survey on the use of Fourier transformation methods in the treatment of boundary problems for the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^a$ (0<a<1), and pseudodifferential generalizations P, over a bounded open set $\Omega$ in $R^n$. The presentation starts at an elementary level. Two points are explained in detail: 1) How the factor $d^a$, with $d(x)=dist(x,d\Omega)$, comes into the picture, related to the fact that the precise solution spaces for the homogeneous Dirichlet problem are so-called a-transmission spaces. 2) The natural definition of a local nonhomogeneous Dirichlet condition $\gamma_0(u/d^{a-1})=\varphi$. We also give brief accounts of some further developments: Evolution problems (for $d_t u - r^+Pu = f(x,t)$) and resolvent problems (for $Pu-\lambda u=f$), also with nonzero boundary conditions. Integration by parts, Green's formula.

Resolvents for fractional-order operators with nonhomogeneous local boundary conditions

For $2a$-order strongly elliptic operators $P$ generalizing $(-\Delta )^a$, $0 2a$. Presently, we study the $L_q$-Dirichlet realizations of $P$ and $P^*$, showing invertibility or Fredholmness, finding smoothness results for the kernels and cokernels, and establishing similar results for $P-\lambda I$, $\lambda \in C$. The solution spaces equal $a$-transmission spaces $H_q^{a(s+2a)}(\bar\Omega)$. Similar results are shown for nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problems, prescribing the local Dirichlet trace $(u/d^{a-1})|_{\partial\Omega }$, $d(x)=dist(x,\partial\Omega)$. They are solvable in the larger spaces $H_q^{(a-1)(s+2a)}(\bar\Omega)$. Moreover, the nonhomogeneous problem with a spectral parameter $\lambda \in C$, $$ Pu-\lambda u = f \text { in }\Omega ,\quad u=0 \text { in }R^n\setminus \Omega ,\quad (u/d^{a-1 })|_{\partial\Omega }=\varphi \text{ on }\partial\Omega , $$ is for $q<(1-a)^{-1}$ shown to be uniquely resp. Fredholm solvable when $\lambda $ is in the resolvent set resp. the spectrum of the $L_2$-Dirichlet realization. Finally, we show solvability results for evolution problems $Pu+d_tu= f(x,t)$ in $L_2$ and $L_q$-based spaces over $C^{1+\tau}$-domains, including nonhomogeneous local boundary conditions.

The principal transmission condition

The paper treats pseudodifferential operators $P=Op(p(\xi ))$ with homogeneous complex symbol $p(\xi )$ of order $2a>0$, generalizing the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta )^a$ but lacking its symmetries, and taken to act on the halfspace $R^n_+$. The operators are seen to satisfy a principal $\mu $-transmission condition relative to $R^n_+$, but generally not the full $\mu $-transmission condition satisfied by $(-\Delta )^a$ and related operators (with $\mu =a$). However, $P$ acts well on the so-called $\mu $-transmission spaces over $R^n_+$ (defined in earlier works), and when $P$ moreover is strongly elliptic, these spaces are the solution spaces for the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for $P$, leading to regularity results with a factor $x_n^\mu $ (in a limited range of Sobolev spaces). The information is then shown to be sufficient to establish an integration by parts formula over $R^n_+$ for $P$ acting on such functions. The formulation in Sobolev spaces, and the results on strongly elliptic operators going beyond operators with real kernels, are new. Furthermore, large solutions with nonzero Dirichlet traces are described, and a halfways Green's formula is established, for this new class of operators. Since the principal $\mu $-transmission condition has weaker requirements than the full $\mu $-transmission condition assumed in earlier papers, new arguments were needed, relying on work of Vishik and Eskin instead of the Boutet de Monvel theory. The results cover the case of nonsymmetric operators with real kernel that were only partially treated in a preceding paper.

Integration by parts for nonsymmetric fractional-order operators on a halfspace

For a strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator $L$ of order $2a$ ($0 0$. Here we deduce a "halfways Green's formula" for $L$: $$ \int_{R^n_+} Lu\,\bar v\,dx-\int_{R^n_+}u\,\overline{ L^*v}\,dx=c\int_{R^{n-1}}\gamma_0(u/x_n^{\mu -1 })\,{\gamma_0(\bar v/x_n^{\mu ^*})}\, dx', $$ when $u$ solves a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problem for $L$, and $v$ solves a homogeneous Dirichlet problem for $L^*$; $\mu ^*=2a-\mu $. Finally, we show a full Green's formula, when both $u$ and $v$ solve nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problems; here both Dirichlet and Neumann traces of $u$ and $v$ enter, as well as a first-order pseudodifferential operator over the boundary.

Fractional-Order Operators on Nonsmooth Domains

The fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta )^a$, $a\in(0,1)$, and its generalizations to variable-coefficient $2a$-order pseudodifferential operators $P$, are studied in $L_q$-Sobolev spaces of Bessel-potential type $H^s_q$. For a bounded open set $\Omega \subset \mathbb R^n$, consider the homogeneous Dirichlet problem: $Pu =f$ in $\Omega $, $u=0$ in $ \mathbb R^n\setminus\Omega $. We find the regularity of solutions and determine the exact Dirichlet domain $D_{a,s,q}$ (the space of solutions $u$ with $f\in H_q^s(\overline\Omega )$) in cases where $\Omega $ has limited smoothness $C^{1+\tau }$, for $2a<\tau <\infty $, $0\le s<\tau -2a$. Earlier, the regularity and Dirichlet domains were determined for smooth $\Omega$ by the second author, and the regularity was found in low-order H\"older spaces for $\tau =1$ by Ros-Oton and Serra. The $H_q^s$-results obtained now when $\tau <\infty $ are new, even for $(-\Delta )^a$. In detail, the spaces $D_{a,s,q}$ are identified as $a$-transmission spaces $H_q^{a(s+2a)}(\overline\Omega )$, exhibiting estimates in terms of $\operatorname{dist}(x,\partial\Omega )^a$ near the boundary. The result has required a new development of methods to handle nonsmooth coordinate changes for pseudodifferential operators, which have not been available before; this constitutes another main contribution of the paper.

Exact Green's formula for the fractional Laplacian and perturbations

Let $\Omega $ be an open, smooth, bounded subset of $ \Bbb R ^n$. In connection with the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta )^a$ ($a>0$), and more generally for a $2a$-order classical pseudodifferential operator ($\psi $do) $P$ with even symbol, one can define the Dirichlet value $\gamma _0^{a-1}u$ resp. Neumann value $\gamma _1^{a-1}u$ of $u(x)$ as the trace resp. normal derivative of $u/d^{a-1}$ on $\partial\Omega $, where $d(x)$ is the distance from $x\in\Omega $ to $\partial\Omega $; they define well-posed boundary value problems for $P$. A Green's formula was shown in a preceding paper, containing a generally nonlocal term $(B\gamma _0^{a-1}u,\gamma _0^{a-1}v)_{\partial\Omega }$, where $B$ is a first-order $\psi $do on $\partial\Omega $. Presently, we determine $B$ from $L$ in the case $P=L^a$, where $L$ is a strongly elliptic second-order differential operator. A particular result is that $B=0$ when $L=-\Delta $, and that $B$ is multiplication by a function (is local) when $L$ equals $-\Delta $ plus a first-order term. In cases of more general $L$, $B$ can be nonlocal.

Limited regularity of solutions to fractional heat and Schr\"odinger equations

When $P$ is the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta )^a$, $0<a<1$, or a pseudodifferential generalization thereof, the Dirichlet problem for the associated heat equation over a smooth set $\Omega \subset{\Bbb R}^n$: $r^+Pu(x,t)+\partial_tu(x,t)=f(x,t)$ on $\Omega \times \,]0,T[\,$, $u(x,t)=0$ for $x\notin\Omega $, $u(x,0)=0$, is known to be solvable in relatively low-order Sobolev or H\"older spaces. We now show that in contrast with differential operator cases, the regularity of $u$ in $x$ at $\partial\Omega $ when $f$ is very smooth cannot in general be improved beyond a certain estimate. An improvement requires the vanishing of a Neumann boundary value. --- There is a similar result for the Schr\"odinger Dirichlet problem $r^+Pv(x)+Vv(x)=g(x)$ on $\Omega $, $v(x)=0$ for $x\notin \Omega $, with $V(x)\in C^\infty $. The proofs involve a precise description, of interest in itself, of the Dirichlet domains in terms of regular functions and functions with a $dist(x,\partial\Omega)^a$ singularity.

Fractional-order operators: Boundary problems, heat equations

The first half of this work gives a survey of the fractional Laplacian (and related operators), its restricted Dirichlet realization on a bounded domain, and its nonhomogeneous local boundary conditions, as treated by pseudodifferential methods. The second half takes up the associated heat equation with homogeneous Dirichlet condition. Here we recall recently shown sharp results on interior regularity and on $L_p$-estimates up to the boundary, as well as recent H\"older estimates. This is supplied with new higher regularity estimates in $L_2$-spaces using a technique of Lions and Magenes, and higher $L_p$-regularity estimates (with arbitrarily high H\"older estimates in the time-parameter) based on a general result of Amann. Moreover, it is shown that an improvement to spatial $C^\infty $-regularity at the boundary is not in general possible.

Regularity in $L_p$ Sobolev spaces of solutions to fractional heat equations

This work contributes in two areas, with sharp results, to the current investigation of regularity of solutions of heat equations (*) $Pu+\partial_tu=f$ on $\Omega\times I $, where $P$ is a nonlocal operator, and $\Omega \subset R^n$, $I\subset R$. 1) For $P$ a strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator ($\psi $do) on $R^n$ of order $d\in R_+$, a symbol calculus on $R^{n+1}$ is introduced, that allows showing optimal regularity of solutions in the scale of anisotropic Bessel-potential spaces $H^{(s,s/d)}$, globally over $R^n\times R$, and locally over $\Omega\times I$, for $s\in R$, $1 1/p$ (where $d(x)= \operatorname{dist}(x,\partial\Omega)$). The interior regularity of $u$ is lifted when $f$ is more smooth.

Green's formula and a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for fractional-order pseudodifferential operators

The paper treats boundary value problems for the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta )^a$, $a>0$, and more generally for classical pseudodifferential operators ($\psi $do's) $P$ of order $2a$ with even symbol, applied to functions on a smooth subset $\Omega $ of ${\Bbb R}^n$. There are several meaningful local boundary conditions, such as the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions $\gamma_k^{a-1}u=\varphi $, $k=0,1$, where $\gamma_k^{a-1}u=c_k\partial_n^k(u/d^{a-1})|_{\partial\Omega }$, $d(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,\partial\Omega )$. We show a new Green's formula $$(Pu,v)_\Omega -(u,P^*v)_\Omega =(s_0\gamma_1^{a-1}u+B\gamma_0^{a-1}u,\gamma_0^{a-1}v)_{\partial\Omega }-(s_0\gamma_0^{a-1}u,\gamma_1^{a-1}v)_{\partial\Omega },$$ where $B$ is a first-order $\psi $do on $\partial\Omega $ depending on the first two terms in the symbol of $P$. Moreover, we show in the elliptic case how the Poisson-like solution operator $K_D$ for the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problem is constructed from $P^+$ in the factorization $P\sim P^-P^+$ obtained in earlier work. The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $S_{DN}=\gamma_1^{a-1}K_D$ is derived from this as a first-order $\psi $do on $\partial\Omega $, with an explicit formula for the symbol. This leads to a characterization of those operators $P$ for which the Neumann problem is Fredholm solvable.

Integration by parts and Pohozaev identities for space-dependent fractional-order operators

Consider a classical elliptic pseudodifferential operator $P$ on ${\Bbb R}^n$ of order $2a$ ($0<a<1)$ with even symbol. For example, $P=A(x,D)^a$ where $A(x,D)$ is a second-order strongly elliptic differential operator; the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^a$ is a particular case. For solutions $u$ of the Dirichlet problem on a bounded smooth subset $Ω\subset{\Bbb R}^n$, we show an integration-by-parts formula with a boundary integral involving $(d^{-a}u)|_{\partialΩ}$, where $d(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. This extends recent results of Ros-Oton, Serra and Valdinoci, to operators that are $x$-dependent, nonsymmetric, and have lower-order parts. We also generalize their formula of Pohozaev-type, that can be used to prove unique continuation properties, and nonexistence of nontrivial solutions of semilinear problems. An illustration is given with $P=(-Δ+m^2)^a$. The basic step in our analysis is a factorization of $P$, $P\sim P^-P^+$, where we set up a calculus for the generalized pseudodifferential operators $P^\pm$ that come out of the construction.

Regularity of spectral fractional Dirichlet and Neumann problems

Consider the fractional powers $(A_{\operatorname{Dir}})^a$ and $(A_{\operatorname{Neu}})^a$ of the Dirichlet and Neumann realizations of a second-order strongly elliptic differential operator $A$ on a smooth bounded subset $Ω$ of ${\Bbb R}^n$. Recalling the results on complex powers and complex interpolation of domains of elliptic boundary value problems by Seeley in the 1970's, we demonstrate how they imply regularity properties in full scales of $H^s_p$-Sobolev spaces and Hölder spaces, for the solutions of the associated equations. Extensions to nonsmooth situations for low values of $s$ are derived by use of recent results on $H^\infty $-calculus. We also include an overview of the various Dirichlet- and Neumann-type boundary problems associated with the fractional Laplacian.

Spectral asymptotics for resolvent differences of elliptic operators with $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interactions on hypersurfaces

We consider self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic differential expression on ${\mathbb R}^n$ with singular interactions of $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-type supported on a compact closed smooth hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^n$. In our main results we prove spectral asymptotics formulae with refined remainder estimates for the singular values of the resolvent difference between the standard self-adjoint realizations and the operators with a $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interaction, respectively. Our technique makes use of general pseudodifferential methods, classical results on spectral asymptotics of $ψ$do's on closed manifolds and Krein-type resolvent formulae.

Local and nonlocal boundary conditions for $μ$-transmission and fractional elliptic pseudodifferential operators

A classical pseudodifferential operator $P$ on $R^n$ satisfies the $μ$-transmission condition relative to a smooth open subset $Ω$, when the symbol terms have a certain twisted parity on the normal to $\partialΩ$. As shown recently by the author, the condition assures solvability of Dirichlet-type boundary problems for elliptic $P$ in full scales of Sobolev spaces with a singularity $d^{μ-k}$, $d(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. Examples include fractional Laplacians $(-Δ)^a$ and complex powers of strongly elliptic PDE. We now introduce new boundary conditions, of Neumann type or more general nonlocal. It is also shown how problems with data on $R^n\setminus Ω$ reduce to problems supported on $\barΩ$, and how the so-called "large" solutions arise. Moreover, the results are extended to general function spaces $F^s_{p,q}$ and $B^s_{p,q}$, including Hölder-Zygmund spaces $B^s_{\infty ,\infty}$. This leads to optimal Hölder estimates, e.g. for Dirichlet solutions of $(-Δ)^au=f\in L_\infty (Ω)$, $u\in d^aC^a(\barΩ)$ when $0<a<1$, $a\ne 1/2$ (in $d^aC^{a-ε}(\barΩ)$ when $a=1/2$).

Fractional Laplacians on domains, a development of Hörmander's theory of mu-transmission pseudodifferential operators

Let $P$ be a classical pseudodifferential operator of complex order $m$ on an $n$-dimensional smooth manifold $Ω_1$. For the truncation $P_Ω$ to a smooth subset $Ω$ there is a well-known theory of boundary value problems when $P_Ω$ has the transmission property (preserves $C^\infty (\barΩ)$) and is of integer order; the calculus of Boutet de Monvel. Many interesting operators, such as for example complex powers of the Laplacian $(-Δ)^μ$ with noninteger mu, are not covered. They have instead the mu-transmission property defined in Hörmander's books, mapping $x_n^μC^\infty (\barΩ)$ into $C^\infty (\barΩ)$. In an unpublished lecture note from 1965, Hörmander described an $L_2$-solvability theory for mu-transmission operators, departing from Vishik and Eskin's results. We here develop the theory in $L_p$ Sobolev spaces ($1<p<\infty$) in a modern setting. It leads to not only Fredholm solvability statements but also regularity results in full scales of Sobolev spaces (for $s\to \infty$). The solution spaces have a singularity at the boundary that we describe in detail. We moreover obtain results in Hölder spaces, which radically improve recent regularity results for fractional Laplacians.
