Monoids, dynamics and Leavitt path algebras

Leavitt path algebras, which are algebras associated to directed graphs, were first introduced about 20 years ago. They have strong connections to such topics as symbolic dynamics, operator algebras, non-commutative geometry, representation theory, and even chip firing. In this article we invite the reader to sneak a peek at these fascinating algebras and their interplay with several seemingly disparate parts of mathematics.

Recasting the Hazrat Conjecture: Relating Shift Equivalence to Graded Morita Equivalence

Let $E$ and $F$ be finite graphs with no sinks, and $k$ any field. We show that shift equivalence of the adjacency matrices $A_E$ and $A_F$, together with an additional compatibility condition, implies that the Leavitt path algebras $L_k(E)$ and $L_k(F)$ are graded Morita equivalent. Along the way, we build a new type of $L_k(E)$--$L_k(F)$-bimodule (a bridging bimodule), which we use to establish the graded equivalence.

Injectives over Leavitt path algebras of graphs with disjoint cycles

Let $K$ be any field, and let $E$ be a finite graph with the property that every vertex in $E$ is the base of at most one cycle (we say such a graph satisfies Condition (AR)). We explicitly construct the injective envelope of each simple left module over the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$. The main idea girding our construction is that of a "formal power series" extension of modules, thereby developing for all graphs satisfying Condition (AR) the understanding of injective envelopes of simple modules over $L_K(E)$ achieved previously for the simple modules over the Toeplitz algebra.

Morita equivalence for graded rings

The classical Morita Theorem for rings established the equivalence of three statements, involving categorical equivalences, isomorphisms between corners of finite matrix rings, and bimodule homomorphisms. A fourth equivalent statement (established later) involves an isomorphism between infinite matrix rings. In our main result, we establish the equivalence of analogous statements involving graded categorical equivalences, graded isomorphisms between corners of finite matrix rings, graded bimodule homomorphisms, and graded isomorphisms between infinite matrix rings.

Connections between Abelian sandpile models and the $K$-theory of weighted Leavitt path algebras

In our main result, we establish that any conical sandpile monoid $M = SP(G)$ of a directed sandpile graph $G$ can be realised as the $\mathcal{V}$-monoid of a weighted Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E,w)$, and consequently, the sandpile group as the Grothendieck group $K_0(L_K(E,w))$. We show how to explicitly construct $(E,w)$ from $G$. Additionally, we describe the conical sandpile monoids which arise as the $\mathcal{V}$-monoid of a standard (i.e., unweighted) Leavitt path algebra.

Injective modules over the Jacobson algebra $K< X,Y | XY = 1 >$

For a field $K$, let $\mathcal{R}$ denote the Jacobson algebra $K\langle X, Y \ | \ XY=1\rangle$. We give an explicit construction of the injective envelope of each of the (infinitely many) simple left $\mathcal{R}$-modules. Consequently, we obtain an explicit description of a minimal injective cogenerator for $\mathcal{R}$. Our approach involves realizing $\mathcal{R}$ up to isomorphism as the Leavitt path $K$-algebra of an appropriate graph $\mathcal{T}$, which thereby allows us to utilize important machinery developed for that class of algebras.

Realizing corners of Leavitt path algebras as Steinberg algebras, with corresponding connections to graph $C^*$-algebras

We show that the endomorphism ring of any nonzero finitely generated projective module over the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$ of an arbitrary graph $E$ with coefficients in a field $K$ is isomorphic to a Steinberg algebra. This yields in particular that every nonzero corner of the Leavitt path algebra of an arbitrary graph is isomorphic to a Steinberg algebra. This in its turn gives that every $K$-algebra with local units which is Morita equivalent to the Leavitt path algebra of a row-countable graph is isomorphic to a Steinberg algebra. Moreover, we prove that a corner by a projection of a $C^*$-algebra of a countable graph is isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra of an ample groupoid.

Products of Ideals in Leavitt Path Algebras

Ideals in Leavitt path algebras have been shown to share many properties with those of integral domains. Since studying factorizations of ideals in integral domains into special types of ideals (particularly, prime, prime-power, primary, irreducible, semiprime, and quasi-primary ones) has proved fruitful, we conduct an analogous investigation in the context of Leavitt path algebras. Specifically, we classify the proper ideals in these rings that admit factorizations into products of each of the above types of ideals. We also classify the Leavitt path algebras where every proper ideal admits a factorization of each of these sorts, as well as those Leavitt path algebras where every proper ideal is of one of those types.

Corners of Leavitt path algebras of finite graphs are Leavitt path algebras

We achieve an extremely useful description (up to isomorphism) of the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$ of a finite graph $E$ with coefficients in a field $K$ as a direct sum of matrix rings over $K$, direct sum with a corner of the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(F)$ of a graph $F$ for which every regular vertex is the base of a loop. Moreover, in this case one may transform the graph $E$ into the graph $F$ via some step-by-step procedure, using the "source elimination" and "collapsing" processes. We use this to establish the main result of the article, that every nonzero corner of a Leavitt path algebra of a finite graph is isomorphic to a Leavitt path algebra. Indeed, we prove a more general result, to wit, that the endomorphism ring of any nonzero finitely generated projective $L_K(E)$-module is isomorphic to the Leavitt path algebra of a graph explicitly constructed from $E$. Consequently, this yields in particular that every unital $K$-algebra which is Morita equivalent to a Leavitt path algebra is indeed isomorphic to a Leavitt path algebra.

Leavitt path algebras of Cayley graphs $C_n^j$

Let $n$ be a positive integer. For each $0\leq j \leq n-1$ we let $C_n^j$ denote the Cayley graph of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$ with respect to the subset $\{1,j\}$. Utilizing the Smith Normal Form process, we give an explicit description of the Grothendieck group of each of the Leavitt path algebras $L_K(C_n^j)$ for any field $K$. Our general method significantly streamlines the approach that was used in previous work to establish this description in the specific case $j=2$. Along the way, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the pairs $(j,n)$ which yield that this group is infinite. We subsequently focus on the case $j = 3$, where the structure of this group turns out to be related to a Fibonacci-like sequence, called the Narayana's Cows sequence.

Chains of Semiprime and Prime Ideals in Leavitt Path Algebras

Semiprime ideals of an arbitrary Leavitt path algebra L are described in terms of their generators. This description is then used to show that the semiprime ideals form a complete sublattice of the lattice of ideals of L, and they enjoy a certain gap property identified by Kaplansky in prime spectra of commutative rings. It is also shown that the totally ordered sets that can be realized as prime spectra of Leavitt path algebras are precisely those that have greatest lower bounds on subchains and enjoy the aforementioned gap property. Finally, it is shown that a conjecture of Kaplansky regarding identifying von Neumann regular rings via their prime factors holds for Leavitt path algebras.

Pr\"ufer modules over Leavitt path algebras

Let $L_K(E)$ denote the Leavitt path algebra associated to the finite graph $E$ and field $K$. For any closed path $c$ in $E$, we define and investigate the uniserial, artinian, non-noetherian left $L_K(E)$-module $U_{E,c-1}$. The unique simple factor of each proper submodule of $U_{E,c-1}$ is isomorphic to the Chen simple module $V_{[c^\infty]}$. In our main result, we classify those closed paths $c$ for which $U_{E,c-1}$ is injective. In this situation, $U_{E,c-1}$ is the injective hull of $V_{[c^\infty]}$.

Leavitt path algebras are B\'ezout

Let $E$ be a directed graph, $K$ any field, and let $L_K(E)$ denote the Leavitt path algebra of $E$ with coefficients in $K$. We show that $L_K(E)$ is a B\'{e}zout ring, i.e., that every finitely generated one-sided ideal of $L_K(E)$ is principal.

Realizing posets as prime spectra of Leavitt path algebras

We associate in a natural way to any partially ordered set $(P,\leq)$ a directed graph $E_P$ (where the vertices of $E_P$ correspond to the elements of $P$, and the edges of $E_P$ correspond to related pairs of elements of $P$), and then describe the prime spectrum of the resulting Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E_P)$. This construction allows us to realize a wide class of partially ordered sets as the prime spectra of rings. More specifically, any partially ordered set in which every downward directed subset has a greatest lower bound, and where these greatest lower bounds satisfy certain compatibility conditions, can be so realized. In particular, any partially ordered set satisfying the descending chain condition is in this class.

Extensions of simple modules over Leavitt path algebras

Let $E$ be a directed graph, $K$ any field, and let $L_K(E)$ denote the Leavitt path algebra of $E$ with coefficients in $K$. For each rational infinite path $c^\infty$ of $E$ we explicitly construct a projective resolution of the corresponding Chen simple left $L_K(E)$-module $V_{[c^\infty]}$. Further, when $E$ is row-finite, for each irrational infinite path $p$ of $E$ we explicitly construct a projective resolution of the corresponding Chen simple left $L_K(E)$-module $V_{[p]}$. For Chen simple modules $S,T$ we describe ${\rm Ext}_{L_K(E)}^1(S,T)$ by presenting an explicit $K$-basis. For any graph $E$ containing at least one cycle, this description guarantees the existence of indecomposable left $L_K(E)$-modules of any prescribed finite length.

Leavitt path algebras: the first decade

The algebraic structures known as {\it Leavitt path algebras} were initially developed in 2004 by Ara, Moreno and Pardo, and almost simultaneously (using a different approach) by the author and Aranda Pino. During the intervening decade, these algebras have attracted significant interest and attention, not only from ring theorists, but from analysts working in C$^*$-algebras, group theorists, and symbolic dynamicists as well. The goal of this article is threefold: to introduce the notion of Leavitt path algebras to the general mathematical community; to present some of the important results in the subject; and to describe some of the field's currently unresolved questions.

The prime spectrum and primitive ideal space of a graph C*-algebra

We describe primitive and prime ideals in the C*-algebra C*(E) of a graph E satisfying Condition (K), together with the topologies on each of these spaces. In particular, we find that primitive ideals correspond to the set of maximal tails disjoint union the set of finite-return vertices, and that prime ideals correspond to the set of clusters of maximal tails disjoint union the set of finite-return vertices.

Leavitt path algebras of Cayley graphs arising from cyclic groups

For any positive integer $n$ we describe the Leavitt path algebra of the Cayley graph $C_n$ corresponding to the cyclic group $\Z/n\Z$. Using a Kirchberg-Phillips-type realization result, we show that there are exactly four isomorphism classes of such Leavitt path algebras, arising as the algebras corresponding to the graphs $C_i$ ($3\leq i \leq 6$).
