Efficient Document Indexing Using Pivot Tree

We present a novel method for efficiently searching top-k neighbors for documents represented in high dimensional space of terms based on the cosine similarity. Mostly, documents are stored as bag-of-words tf-idf representation. One of the most used ways of computing similarity between a pair of documents is cosine similarity between the vector representations, but cosine similarity is not a metric distance measure as it doesn't follow triangle inequality, therefore most metric searching methods can not be applied directly. We propose an efficient method for indexing documents using a pivot tree that leads to efficient retrieval. We also study the relation between precision and efficiency for the proposed method and compare it with a state of the art in the area of document searching based on inner product.

Boundary conditions for the solution of the 3-dimensional Poisson equation in open metallic enclosures

Numerical solution of the Poisson equation in metallic enclosures, open at one or more ends, is important in many practical situations such as High Power Microwave (HPM) or photo-cathode devices. It requires imposition of a suitable boundary condition at the open end. In this paper, methods for solving the Poisson equation are investigated for various charge densities and aspect ratios of the open ends. It is found that a mixture of second order and third order local asymptotic boundary condition (ABC) is best suited for large aspect ratios while a proposed non-local matching method, based on the solution of the Laplace equation, scores well when the aspect ratio is near unity for all charge density variations, including ones where the centre of charge is close to an open end or the charge density is non-localized. The two methods complement each other and can be used in electrostatic calculations where the computational domain needs to be terminated at the open boundaries of the metallic enclosure.

Excitation of Coherent States: Wave Function Development and Analysis

Agarwal and Tara, in 1991 introduced a new class of states defined as m times application of creation operator to Coherent States known as Excited Coherent States (ECS) or Photon Added Coherent States (PACS). They are neither completely quantum nor completely classical. Here we present and develop these Excited Coherent Sates from a basic and more approachable Wave-function approach. We have derived the ECS wave function as a blend of Coherent States and Fock States and thus established them as a result of Quantum fluctuations (represented by Fock states) on Coherent States. We further derived and analyzed basic relations such as wave packet width and uncertainty relation in a more generalized form and presented their development with time. Another important property of ECS is Quadrature Squeezing. Here we also present a general analysis of squeezing in ECS and derived conditions on parameters for squeezing.
