Molecular environs and triggered star formation around the large Galactic infrared bubble N 24

A multi-wavelength analysis of the large Galactic infrared bubble N 24 is has been presented in this paper in order to investigate the molecular and star formation environment around expanding HII regions. Using archival data from Herschel and ATLASGAL, the distribution and physical properties of the dust over the entire bubble are studied. Twenty three dense clumps are identified using the Clumpfind2d algorithm with sizes and masses in the range 0.65-1.73 pc and 600-16300 Msun, respectively. To analyse the molecular environment in N 24, observations of NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) were carried out using the Nanshan 26m radio telescope. Analysis of the kinetic temperature and gravitational stability of these clumps suggests gravitational collapse in several of them. The mass-size distributions of the clumps and the presence of massive young protostars indicate that the shell of N 24 is a region of ongoing massive star formation. The compatibility of the dynamical and fragmentation time-scales and the overabundance of YSOs and clumps on the rim suggest that the collect and collapse mechanism is in play at the boundary of the bubble, but the existence of the IRDC at the edge of bubble indicates that radiation-driven implosion mechanism may also have played a role there.

$\varepsilon$-regularity criteria in anisotropic Lebesgue spaces and Leray's self-similar solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we establish some $\varepsilon$-regularity criteria in anisotropic Lebesgue spaces for suitable weak solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations as follows: $$ \limsup\limits_{\varrho\rightarrow0} \varrho^{1-\frac{2}{p}-\sum\limits^{3}_{j=1}\frac{1}{q_{j}}} \|u\|_{L_{t}^{p}L^{\overrightarrow{q}}_{x}(Q(\varrho))} \leq\varepsilon, ~~\frac{2}{p}+\sum\limits^{3}_{j=1}\frac{1}{q_{j}} \leq2~~~~~\text{with}~q_{j} > 1;\\$$$$ \sup_{-1\leq t\leq0}\|u\|_{L^{\overrightarrow{q}}(B(1))} < \varepsilon,~~\frac{1}{q_{1}}+\frac{1}{q_{2}}+\frac{1}{q_{3}} <2\quad \text{with}\, 1<q_{j}<\infty;$$ $$\|u \|_{L_{t}^{p}L^{\overrightarrow{q}}_{x}(Q(1))} +\|Π\|_{L^{1}(Q(1))}\leq\varepsilon, \quad \frac2p+\sum^{3}_{j=1}\frac{1}{q_{j}} <2 ~~~\text{with}~~ 1<q_{j}<\infty, $$ which extends the previous results in [2, 12, 18, 19, 22, 37, 43]. As an application, in the spirit of [4], we prove that there does not exist a nontrivial Leray's backward self-similar solution with profiles in $L^{\overrightarrow{p}}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$ with $\frac{1}{p_{1}}+\frac{1}{p_{2}}+\frac{1}{p_{3}}<2$. This generalizes the corresponding results of [4, 20, 28, 38].

$\rm H_2CO$ and $\rm H110α$ Observations toward the Aquila Molecular Cloud

The formaldehyde $\rm H_2CO(1_{10} - 1_{11})$ absorption line and H$110α$ radio recombination line (RRL) have been observed toward the Aquila Molecular Cloud using the Nanshan 25 m telescope operated by the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory CAS. These first observations of the $\rm H_2CO$ $(1_{10} - 1_{11})$ absorption line determine the extent of the molecular regions that are affected by the ongoing star formation in the Aquila molecular complex and show some of the dynamic properties. The distribution of the excitation temperature $T_{ex}$ for $\rm H_2CO$ identifies the two known star formation regions W40 and Serpens South as well as a smaller new region Serpens 3. The intensity and velocity distributions of $\rm H_2CO$ and $\rm ^{13}CO(1-0)$ do not agree well with each other, which confirms that the $\rm H_2CO$ absorption structure is mostly determined by the excitation of the molecules resulting from the star formation rather than by the availability of molecular material as represented by the distribution. Some velocity-coherent linear $\rm ^{13}CO(1-0)$ structures have been identified in velocity channel maps of $\rm H_2CO$ and it is found that the three star formation regions lie on the intersect points of filaments. The $\rm H110α$ emission is found only at the location of the W40 H II region and spectral profile indicates a redshifted spherical outflow structure in the outskirts of the H II region. Sensitive mapping of $\rm H_2CO$ absorption of the Aquila Complex has correctly identified the locations of star-formation activity in complex molecular clouds and the spectral profiles reveal the dominant velocity components and may identify the presence of outflows.

A $\varepsilon$-regularity criterion without pressure of suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations at one scale

In this paper, we continue our work in [15] to derive ε-regularity criteria at one scale without pressure for suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. We establish a $\varepsilon$-regularity criterion below of suitable weak solutions, for any $δ>0$, $$\iint_{Q(1)}|u|^{\frac{5}{2}+δ}dxdt\leq \varepsilon.$$ As an application, we extend the previous corresponding results concerning the improvement of the classical Caffarelli--Kohn--Nirenberg theorem by a logarithmic factor.

A New Hybrid Consensus Protocol: Deterministic Proof Of Work

The Decentralized-Consistent-Scale (DCS) Triangle defines three dimensions that illustrate the tradeoffs of the blockchain consensus mechanism. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid consensus protocol, called Deterministic Proof of Work (DPoW), which can reach high levels of scalability and consistency without significant reduction to decentralization. Our protocol introduces a Map-reduce PoW mining algorithm to perform alongside Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) verification, which together allow for transactions to be confirmed immediately, largely improving scalability. In addition, the protocol is designed such that forking cannot occur, ensuring strong consistency and security against a multitude of attacks. The Map-reduce PoW mining process ensures that no single entity can control the network, guaranteeing decentralization. We analyzed the security of our protocol by evaluating the possibility of double spending attacks, and furthermore, conducted experiments which demonstrate our claims.

Regulator proofs for Boyd's identities on genus 2 curves

We use the elliptic regulator to recover some identities between Mahler measures involving certain families of genus 2 curves that were conjectured by Boyd and proven by Bertin and Zudilin by differentiating the Mahler measures and using hypergeometric identities. Since our proofs involve the regulator, they yield light into the expected relation of each Mahler measure to special values of $L$-functions of certain elliptic curves.

Decentralized Caching Schemes and Performance Limits in Two-layer Networks

We study the decentralized caching scheme in a two-layer network, which includes a sever, multiple helpers, and multiple users. Basically, the proposed caching scheme consists of two phases, i.e, placement phase and delivery phase. In the placement phase, each helper/user randomly and independently selects contents from the server and stores them into its memory. In the delivery phase, the users request contents from the server, and the server satisfies each user through a helper. Different from the existing caching scheme, the proposed caching scheme takes into account the pre-stored contents at both helpers and users in the placement phase to design the delivery phase. Meanwhile, the proposed caching scheme exploits index coding in the delivery phase and leverages multicast opportunities, even when different users request distinct contents. Besides, we analytically characterize the performance limit of the proposed caching scheme, and show that the achievable rate region of the proposed caching scheme lies within constant margins to the information-theoretic optimum. In particular, the multiplicative and additive factors are carefully sharpened to be $\frac{1}{48}$ and $4$ respectively, both of which are better than the state of arts. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed caching scheme compared with the state of arts.

A Comparative Study of Consistent Snapshot Algorithms for Main-Memory Database Systems

In-memory databases (IMDBs) are gaining increasing popularity in big data applications, where clients commit updates intensively. Specifically, it is necessary for IMDBs to have efficient snapshot performance to support certain special applications (e.g., consistent checkpoint, HTAP). Formally, the in-memory consistent snapshot problem refers to taking an in-memory consistent time-in-point snapshot with the constraints that 1) clients can read the latest data items and 2) any data item in the snapshot should not be overwritten. Various snapshot algorithms have been proposed in academia to trade off throughput and latency, but industrial IMDBs such as Redis adhere to the simple fork algorithm. To understand this phenomenon, we conduct comprehensive performance evaluations on mainstream snapshot algorithms. Surprisingly, we observe that the simple fork algorithm indeed outperforms the state-of-the-arts in update-intensive workload scenarios. On this basis, we identify the drawbacks of existing research and propose two lightweight improvements. Extensive evaluations on synthetic data and Redis show that our lightweight improvements yield better performance than fork, the current industrial standard, and the representative snapshot algorithms from academia. Finally, we have opensourced the implementation of all the above snapshot algorithms so that practitioners are able to benchmark the performance of each algorithm and select proper methods for different application scenarios.

High-mass outflows identified from COHRS CO\,(3 - 2) Survey

An unbiased search of molecular outflows within the region of the COHRS survey has identified 157 high-mass outflows from a sample of 770 ATLASGAL clumps with a detection rate of 20\%. The detection rate of outflows increases for clumps with higher M$_{clump}$, L$_{bol}$, L$_{bol}$/M$_{clump}$, N$_{H_{2}}$, and T$_{dust}$ compared to the clumps with no outflow. The detection rates of the outflow increases from protostellar (8\%) to YSO clump (17\%) and to MSF clump (29\%). The detection rate 26\% for quiescent clump is preliminary, because the sample of quiescent clumps is small. A statistical relation between the outflow and clump masses for our sample is $\log(M_{out}/M_{\bigodot}) = (-1.1\pm0.21) + (0.9\pm0.07)\log(M_{clump}/M_{\bigodot})$. The detection rate of outflows and the outflow mass-loss rate show an increase with increasing M$_{clump}$, L$_{bol}$, N$_{H_{2}}$, and T$_{dust}$, which indicates that clumps with outflow with higher parameter values are at a more advanced evolutionary stage. The outflow mechanical force increases with increasing bolometric luminosities. No clear evidence has yet been found that higher mass outflows have different launching conditions than low-mass outflows.

Extended ammonia observations towards the 'Integral-Shaped Filament'

Recent observations suggest a scenario in which filamentary structures in the ISM represent the first step towards clumps/cores and eventually star formation. The densest filaments would then fragment into prestellar cores owing to gravitational instability. We seek to understand the roles filamentary structures play in high-mass star formation. We mapped the integral-shaped filament (ISF) in NH3 (1, 1) and (2, 2). The whole filamentary structure is uniformly and fully sampled. We find that the morphology revealed by the map of velocity-integrated intensity of the NH3 (1, 1) line is closely associated with the dust ridge. We identify 6 "clumps" related to the well known OMC-1 to 5 and 11 "sub-clumps" within the map and they are separated not randomly but in roughly equal intervals along the ISF. The average spacing of clumps is 11.30'$\pm$1.31' (1.36$\pm$0.16 pc ) and the average spacing of sub-clumps is 7.18'$\pm$1.19' (0.86$\pm$0.14 pc). These spacings agree well with the predicted values of the thermal (0.86 pc) and turbulent sausage instability (1.43 pc) by adopting a cylindric geometry of the ISF with an inclination of $60^{\circ}$ with respect to the line of sight. We also find a velocity gradient of about 0.6 km s-1 pc-1 that runs along the ISF which likely arises from an overall rotation of the Orion A molecular cloud. The inferred ratio between rotational and gravitational energy is well below unity. Furthermore, fluctuations are seen in the centroid velocity diagram along the ISF. The OMC-1 to 5 clouds are located close to the local extrema of the fluctuations, which suggests that there exist gas flows associated with these clumps in the ISF. The derived NH3 (1, 1) and (2, 2) rotation temperatures in the OMC-1 are about 30-40 K. In OMC-2, OMC-3, and the northern part of OMC-4, we find higher and lower temperatures at the boundaries and in the interior, respectively.

Resource Allocation for Cooperative D2D-Enabled Wireless Caching Networks

In this paper, we study the resource allocation problem for a cooperative device-to-device (D2D)-enabled wireless caching network, where each user randomly caches popular contents to its memory and shares the contents with nearby users through D2D links. To enhance the throughput of spectrum sharing D2D links, which may be severely limited by the interference among D2D links, we enable the cooperation among some of the D2D links to eliminate the interference among them. We formulate a joint link scheduling and power allocation problem to maximize the overall throughput of cooperative D2D links (CDLs) and non-cooperative D2D links (NDLs), which is NP-hard. To solve the problem, we decompose it into two subproblems that maximize the sum rates of the CDLs and the NDLs, respectively. For CDL optimization, we propose a semi-orthogonal-based algorithm for joint user scheduling and power allocation. For NDL optimization, we propose a novel low-complexity algorithm to perform link scheduling and develop a Difference of Convex functions (D.C.) programming method to solve the non-convex power allocation problem. Simulation results show that the cooperative transmission can significantly increase both the number of served users and the overall system throughput.

Atomically resolved probe-type scanning tunneling microscope for use in harsh vibrational cryogen-free superconducting magnet

We present a probe-type scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with atomic resolution that is designed to be directly inserted and work in a harsh vibrational cryogen-free superconducting magnet system. When a commercial variable temperature insert (VTI) is installed in the magnet and the STM is in turn housed in the VTI, a lowest temperature of 1.6 K can be achieved, where the STM still operates well. We have tested it in an 8 T superconducting magnet cooled with the pulse-tube cryocooler (PTC) and obtained atomically revolved graphite and NiSe2 images as well as the scanning tunneling spectrum (STS, i.e. dI/dV spectrum) data of the latter near its critical temperature, which show the formation process of the superconducting gap as a function of temperature. The drifting rates of the STM at 1.6 K in X-Y plane and Z direction are 1.15 and 1.71 pm/min respectively. Noise analysis for the tunneling current shows that the amplitudes of the dominant peaks (6.84 and 10.25Hz) are low. This is important as a cryogen-free magnet system has long been considered too harsh for any atomic resolution measurement.

Remarks on the singular set of suitable weak solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, let $\mathcal{S}$ denote the possible interior singular set of suitable weak solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations. We improve the known upper box-counting dimension of this set from $360/277(\approx1.300)$ in [24] to $975/758(\approx1.286)$. It is also shown that $Λ(\mathcal{S},r(\log(e/r))^σ)=0(0\leqσ<27/113)$, which extends the previous corresponding results concerning the improvement of the classical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg theorem by a logarithmic factor in Choe and Lewis [3, J. Funct. Anal., 175: 348-369, 2000] and in Choe and Yang et al. [4, Comm. Math. Phys, 336: 171-198, 2015]. The proof is inspired by a new $\varepsilon$-regularity criterion proved by Guevara and Phuc in [7, Calc. Var. 56:68, 2017].

Pressure-induced Superconductivity in the Three-component Fermion Topological Semimetal Molybdenum Phosphide

Topological semimetal, a novel state of quantum matter hosting exotic emergent quantum phenomena dictated by the non-trivial band topology, has emerged as a new frontier in condensed-matter physics. Very recently, a coexistence of triply degenerate points of band crossing and Weyl points near the Fermi level was theoretically predicted and immediately experimentally verified in single crystalline molybdenum phosphide (MoP). Here we show in this material the high-pressure electronic transport and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We report the emergence of pressure-induced superconductivity in MoP with a critical temperature Tc of about 2 K at 27.6 GPa, rising to 3.7 K at the highest pressure of 95.0 GPa studied. No structural phase transitions is detected up to 60.6 GPa from the XRD. Meanwhile, the Weyl points and triply degenerate points topologically protected by the crystal symmetry are retained at high pressure as revealed by our DFT calculations. The coexistence of three-component fermion and superconductivity in heavily pressurized MoP offers an excellent platform to study the interplay between topological phase of matter and superconductivity.

Refined Bounds on the Number of Distinct Eigenvalues of a Matrix After Perturbation

The eigenproblem of low-rank updated matrices are of crucial importance in many applications. Recently, an upper bound on the number of distinct eigenvalues of a perturbed matrix was established. The result can be applied to estimate the number of Krylov iterations required for solving a perturbed linear system. In this paper, we revisit this problem and establish some refined bounds. Some {\it a prior} upper bounds that only rely on the information of the matrix in question and the low-rank update are provided. Examples show the superiority of our theoretical results over the existing ones. The number of distinct singular values of a matrix after perturbation is also investigated.

A weighted global GMRES algorithm with deflation for solving large Sylvester matrix equations

The solution of large scale Sylvester matrix equation plays an important role in control and large scientific computations. A popular approach is to use the global GMRES algorithm. In this work, we first consider the global GMRES algorithm with weighting strategy, and propose some new schemes based on residual to update the weighting matrix. Due to the growth of memory requirements and computational cost, it is necessary to restart the algorithm efficiently. The deflation strategy is popular for the solution of large linear systems and large eigenvalue problems, to the best of our knowledge, little work is done on applying deflation to the global GMRES algorithm for large Sylvester matrix equations. We then consider how to combine the weighting strategy with deflated restarting, and propose a weighted global GMRES algorithm with deflation for solving large Sylvester matrix equations. Theoretical analysis is given to show why the new algorithm works effectively. Further, unlike the weighted GMRES-DR presented in [{\sc M. Embree, R. B. Morgan and H. V. Nguyen}, {\em Weighted inner products for GMRES and GMRES-DR}, (2017), arXiv:1607.00255v2], we show that in our new algorithm, there is no need to change the inner product with respect to diagonal matrix to that with non-diagonal matrix, and our scheme is much cheaper. Numerical examples illustrate the numerical behavior of the proposed algorithms.

Commissioning of te China-ADS injector-I testing facility

The 10 MeV accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) Injector-I test stand at Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) is a testing facility dedicated to demonstrate one of the two injector design schemes [Injector Scheme-I, which works at 325 MHz], for the ADS project in China. The Injector adopted a four vane copper structure RFQ with output energy of 3.2 MeV and a superconducting (SC) section accommodating fourteen \b{eta}g=0.12 single spoke cavities, fourteen SC solenoids and fourteen cold BPMs. The ion source was installed since April of 2014, periods of commissioning are regularly scheduled between installation phases of the rest of the injector. Continuous wave (CW) beam was shooting through the injector and 10 MeV CW proton beam with average beam current around 2 mA was obtained recently. This contribution describe the results achieved so far and the difficulties encountered in CW commissioning.

Power Control in Full Duplex Networks: Area Spectrum Efficiency and Energy Efficency

Full-duplex (FD) allows the exchange of data between nodes on the same temporal and spectrum resources, however, it introduces self interference (SI) and additional network interference compared to half-duplex (HD). Power control in the FD networks, which is seldom studied in the literature, is promising to mitigate the interference and improve the performance of the overall network. In this work, we investigate the random and deterministic power control strategies in the FD networks, namely, constant power control, uniform power control, fractional power control and ALOHA-like random on-off power control scheme. Based on the obtained coverage probabilities and their robust approximations, we show that power control provides remarkable gain in area spectrum efficiency (ASE) and energy efficiency (EE), and improves the fairness among the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) transmissions with respect to the FD networks. Moreover, we evaluate the minimum SI cancellation capability to guarantee the performance of the cell-edge users in FD networks. Generally, power control is helpful to improve the performance of the transmission for long distance in the FD networks and reduce the requirement of SI cancellation capability.
