Controllable Bistability and Squeezing of Confined Polariton Dark Solitons

The generation of squeezed light in semiconductor materials opens opportunities for building on-chip devices that are operated at the quantum level. Here we study theoretically a squeezed light source of polariton dark solitons confined in a geometric potential well of semiconductor microcavities in the strong coupling regime. We show that polariton dark solitons of odd and even parities can be created by tuning the potential depth. When driving the potential depth linearly, a bistability of solitons with the two different parities can be induced. Strong intensity squeezing is obtained near the turning point of the bistability due to the large nonlinear interaction, which can be controlled by Feshbach resonance. The phase diagram of the bistability and squeezing of the dark solitons is obtained through large scale numerical calculations. Our study contributes to the current efforts in realizing topological excitations and squeezed light sources with solid-state devices.

Geometrized effective-one-body formalism for extreme-mass-ratio limits: Generic orbits

Compact objects inspiraling into supermassive black holes, known as extreme-mass-ratio inspirals, are an important source for future space-borne gravitational-wave detectors. When constructing waveform templates, usually the adiabatic approximation is employed to treat the compact object as a test particle for a short duration, and the radiation reaction is reflected in the changes of the constants of motion. However, the mass of the compact object should have contributions to the background. In the present paper, employing the effective-one-body formalism, we analytically calculate the trajectories of a compact object around a massive Kerr black hole with generally three-dimensional orbits and express the fundamental orbital frequencies in explicit forms. In addition, by constructing an approximate "constant" similar to the Carter constant, we transfer the dynamical quantities such as energy, angular momentum, and the "Carter constant" to the semilatus rectum, eccentricity, and orbital inclination with mass-ratio corrections. The linear mass-ratio terms in the formalism may not be sufficient for accurate waveforms, but our analytical method for solving the equations of motion could be useful in various approaches to building waveform models.

SA-MATD3:Self-attention-based multi-agent continuous control method in cooperative environments

Cooperative problems under continuous control have always been the focus of multi-agent reinforcement learning. Existing algorithms suffer from the problem of uneven learning degree with the increase of the number of agents. In this paper, a new structure for a multi-agent actor critic is proposed, and the self-attention mechanism is applied in the critic network and the value decomposition method used to solve the uneven problem. The proposed algorithm makes full use of the samples in the replay memory buffer to learn the behavior of a class of agents. First, a new update method is proposed for policy networks that promotes learning efficiency. Second, the utilization of samples is improved, at the same time reflecting the ability of perspective-taking among groups. Finally, the "deceptive signal" in training is eliminated and the learning degree among agents is more uniform than in the existing methods. Multiple experiments were conducted in two typical scenarios of a multi-agent particle environment. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can perform better than the state-of-the-art ones, and that it exhibits higher learning efficiency with an increasing number of agents.

Resonant Beam Communications with Echo Interference Elimination

Resonant beam communications (RBCom) is capable of providing wide bandwidth when using light as the carrier. Besides, the RBCom system possesses the characteristics of mobility, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and multiplexing. Nevertheless, the channel of the RBCom system is distinct from other light communication technologies due to the echo interference issue. In this paper, we reveal the mechanism of the echo interference and propose the method to eliminate the interference. Moreover, we present an exemplary design based on frequency shifting and optical filtering, along with its mathematic model and performance analysis. The numerical evaluation shows that the channel capacity is greater than 15 bit/s/Hz.

Resonant Beam Communications: Principles and Designs

Wireless optical communications (WOC) has carriers up to several hundred terahertz, which offers several advantages, such as ultrawide bandwidth and no electromagnetic interference. Conventional WOC that uses light transmitters such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), directed LEDs, and lasers are facing major challenges in attenuation or tracking. Resonant beam communications (RBCom) meets the requirements of low attenuation, non-mechanical mobility, and multiple access. Yet, RBCom channel undergoes echo interference in contrast to common non-echo channels. An interference elimination method based on optical filtering is presented along with an exemplary interference-free RBCom system.

A Logical Neural Network Structure With More Direct Mapping From Logical Relations

Logical relations widely exist in human activities. Human use them for making judgement and decision according to various conditions, which are embodied in the form of \emph{if-then} rules. As an important kind of cognitive intelligence, it is prerequisite of representing and storing logical relations rightly into computer systems so as to make automatic judgement and decision, especially for high-risk domains like medical diagnosis. However, current numeric ANN (Artificial Neural Network) models are good at perceptual intelligence such as image recognition while they are not good at cognitive intelligence such as logical representation, blocking the further application of ANN. To solve it, researchers have tried to design logical ANN models to represent and store logical relations. Although there are some advances in this research area, recent works still have disadvantages because the structures of these logical ANN models still don't map more directly with logical relations which will cause the corresponding logical relations cannot be read out from their network structures. Therefore, in order to represent logical relations more clearly by the neural network structure and to read out logical relations from it, this paper proposes a novel logical ANN model by designing the new logical neurons and links in demand of logical representation. Compared with the recent works on logical ANN models, this logical ANN model has more clear corresponding with logical relations using the more direct mapping method herein, thus logical relations can be read out following the connection patterns of the network structure. Additionally, less neurons are used.

SSMD: Semi-Supervised Medical Image Detection with Adaptive Consistency and Heterogeneous Perturbation

Semi-Supervised classification and segmentation methods have been widely investigated in medical image analysis. Both approaches can improve the performance of fully-supervised methods with additional unlabeled data. However, as a fundamental task, semi-supervised object detection has not gained enough attention in the field of medical image analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel Semi-Supervised Medical image Detector (SSMD). The motivation behind SSMD is to provide free yet effective supervision for unlabeled data, by regularizing the predictions at each position to be consistent. To achieve the above idea, we develop a novel adaptive consistency cost function to regularize different components in the predictions. Moreover, we introduce heterogeneous perturbation strategies that work in both feature space and image space, so that the proposed detector is promising to produce powerful image representations and robust predictions. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed SSMD achieves the state-of-the-art performance at a wide range of settings. We also demonstrate the strength of each proposed module with comprehensive ablation studies.

Algorithm for TDI numerical simulation and sensitivity investigation

We introduce a generic algorithm to determine the time delays and spacecraft (S/C) positions to compose any time-delay interferometry (TDI) channel in the dynamical case and evaluate its sensitivity by using a full numerical method. We select 11 second-generation TDI channels constructed from four approaches and investigate their gravitational wave responses, noise levels, and averaged sensitivities under a numerical LISA orbit. The sensitivities of selected channels are various especially for frequencies lower than 20 mHz. The optimal channel A$_2$ (or equivalently E$_2$) combined from second-generation Michelson TDI channels (X$_1$, X$_2$, and X$_3$) achieves the best sensitivity among the channels, while the Sagnac $α_1$ channel shows the worse sensitivity. Multiple channels show better sensitivities at some characteristic frequencies compared to the fiducial X$_1$ channel. The joint $\mathrm{A_2+E_2+T_2}$ observation not only enhances the sensitivity of the X$_1$ channel by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$ to 2 but also improves the capacity of sky coverage.

The Jacobi sums over Galois rings of arbitrary characters and their applications in constructing asymptotically optimal codebooks

Codebooks with small maximum cross-correlation amplitudes are used to distinguish the signals from different users in CDMA communication systems. In this paper, we first study the Jacobi sums over Galois rings of arbitrary characteristics and completely determine their absolute values, which extends the work in [34], where the Jacobi sums over Galois rings with characteristics of a square of a prime number were discussed. Then, the deterministic construction of codebooks based on the Jacobi sums over Galois rings of arbitrary characteristics is presented, which produces asymptotically optimal codebooks with respect to the Welch bound. In addition, the parameters of the codebooks provided in this paper are new.

Alternative LISA-TAIJI networks

The space-borne gravitational wave (GW) detectors, LISA and TAIJI, are planned to be launched in the 2030s. The dual detectors with comparable sensitivities will form a network observing GW with significant advantages. In this work, we investigate the three possible LISA-TAIJI networks for the different location and orientation compositions of LISA orbit ($+60^\circ$ inclination and trailing the Earth by $20^\circ$) and alternative TAIJI orbit configurations including TAIJIp ($+60^\circ$ inclination and leading the Earth by $20^\circ$), TAIJIc ($+60^\circ$ inclination and co-located with LISA), TAIJIm ($-60^\circ$ inclination and leading the Earth by $20^\circ$). In the three LISA-TAIJI configurations, the LISA-TAIJIm network shows the best performance on the sky localization and polarization determination for the massive binary system due to their better complementary antenna pattern, and LISA-TAIJIc could achieve the best cross-correlation and observe the stochastic GW background with an optimal sensitivity.

Thermal Infrared Image Colorization for Nighttime Driving Scenes with Top-Down Guided Attention

Benefitting from insensitivity to light and high penetration of foggy environments, infrared cameras are widely used for sensing in nighttime traffic scenes. However, the low contrast and lack of chromaticity of thermal infrared (TIR) images hinder the human interpretation and portability of high-level computer vision algorithms. Colorization to translate a nighttime TIR image into a daytime color (NTIR2DC) image may be a promising way to facilitate nighttime scene perception. Despite recent impressive advances in image translation, semantic encoding entanglement and geometric distortion in the NTIR2DC task remain under-addressed. Hence, we propose a toP-down attEntion And gRadient aLignment based GAN, referred to as PearlGAN. A top-down guided attention module and an elaborate attentional loss are first designed to reduce the semantic encoding ambiguity during translation. Then, a structured gradient alignment loss is introduced to encourage edge consistency between the translated and input images. In addition, pixel-level annotation is carried out on a subset of FLIR and KAIST datasets to evaluate the semantic preservation performance of multiple translation methods. Furthermore, a new metric is devised to evaluate the geometric consistency in the translation process. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed PearlGAN over other image translation methods for the NTIR2DC task. The source code and labeled segmentation masks will be available at \url{https://github.com/FuyaLuo/PearlGAN/}.

A posteriori error analysis of hybrid high-order method for the Stokes problem

We present a residual-based a posteriori error estimator for the hybrid high-order (HHO) method for the Stokes model problem. Both the proposed HHO method and error estimator are valid in two and three dimensions and support arbitrary approximation orders on fairly general meshes. The upper bound and lower bound of the error estimator are proved, in which proof, the key ingredient is a novel stabilizer employed in the discrete scheme. By using the given estimator, adaptive algorithm of HHO method is designed to solve model problem. Finally, the expected theoretical results are numerically demonstrated on a variety of meshes for model problem.

Doping Concentration Modulation in Vanadium Doped Monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide for Synaptic Transistors

Doping is an effective way to modify the electronic property of two-dimensional (2D) materials and endow them with new functionalities. However, wide-range control of the substitutional doping concentration with large scale uniformity remains challenging in 2D materials. Here we report in-situ chemical vapor deposition growth of vanadium (V) doped monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with widely tunable doping concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 13.1 at%. The key to regulate the doping concentration lies in the use of appropriate V precursors with different doping abilities, which also generate a large-scale uniform doping effect. Artificial synaptic transistors were fabricated by using the heavily doped MoS2 as the channel material for the first time. Synaptic potentiation, depression and repetitive learning processes are mimicked by the gate-tunable channel conductance change in such transistors with abundant V atoms to trap/detrap electrons. This work shows a feasible method to dope monolayer 2D semiconductors and demonstrates their use in artificial synaptic transistors.

Resilient Control under Quantization and Denial-of-Service: Co-designing a Deadbeat Controller and Transmission Protocol

This paper is concerned with the problem of stabilizing continuous-time linear time-invariant systems subject to quantization and Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. In this context, two DoS-induced challenges emerge with the design of resilient encoding schemes, namely, the coupling between encoding strategies of different signals, and the synchronization between the encoder and decoder. To address these challenges, a novel structure that is equipped with a deadbeat controller as well as a delicate transmission protocol for the input and output channels, co-designed leveraging the controllability index, is put forward. When both input and output channels are subject to DoS attacks and quantization, the proposed structure is shown able to decouple the encoding schemes for input, output, and estimated output signals. This property is further corroborated by designing encoding schemes as well as conditions that ensure exponential stability of the closed-loop system. On the other hand, when only the output channel is subject to network phenomenon, the proposed structure can achieve exponential stabilization without acknowledgment (ACK) signals, in contrast to existing ACK-based results. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the practical merits of the proposed approach as well as the theory.

Spectroscopic Evidence on Realization of a Genuine Topological Nodal Line Semimetal in LaSbTe

The nodal line semimetals have attracted much attention due to their unique topological electronic structure and exotic physical properties. A genuine nodal line semimetal is qualified by the presence of Dirac nodes along a line in the momentum space that are protected against the spin-orbit coupling. In addition, it requires that the Dirac points lie close to the Fermi level allowing to dictate the macroscopic physical properties. Although the material realization of nodal line semimetals have been theoretically predicted in numerous compounds, only a few of them have been experimentally verified and the realization of a genuine nodal line semimetal is particularly rare. Here we report the realization of a genuine nodal line semimetal in LaSbTe. We investigated the electronic structure of LaSbTe by band structure calculations and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements. Taking spin-orbit coupling into account, our band structure calculations predict that a nodal line is formed in the boundary surface of the Brillouin zone which is robust and lies close to the Fermi level. The Dirac nodes along the X-R line in momentum space are directly observed in our ARPES measurements and the energies of these Dirac nodes are all close to the Fermi level. These results constitute clear evidence that LaSbTe is a genuine nodal line semimetal, providing a new platform to explore for novel phenomena and possible applications associated with the nodal line semimetals.

Global phase diagram of Coulomb-interacting anisotropic Weyl semimetals with disorder

Taking into account the interplay between the disorder and Coulomb interaction, the phase diagram of three-dimensional anisotropic Weyl semimetal is studied by renormalization group theory. Weak disorder is irrelevant in anisotropic Weyl semimetal, while the disorder becomes relevant and drives a quantum phase transition from semimetal to compressible diffusive metal phases if the disorder strength is larger than a critical value. The long-range Coulomb interaction is irrelevant in clean anisotropic Weyl semimetal. However, interestingly, we find that the long-range Coulomb interaction exerts a dramatic influence on the critical disorder strength for phase transition to compressible diffusive metal. Specifically, the critical disorder strength can receive a prominent change even though an arbitrarily weak Coulomb interaction is included. This novel behavior is closely related to the anisotropic screening effect of Coulomb interaction, and essentially results from the specifical energy dispersion of the fermion excitations in anisotropic Weyl semimetal. The theoretical results are helpful for understanding the physical properties of the candidates of anisotropic Weyl semimetal, such as pressured BiTeI, and some other related materials.

Observing gravitational wave polarizations with LISA-TAIJI network

Two polarization modes of gravitational wave are derived from the general relativity which are plus and cross modes. However, the alternative theories of gravity can yield the gravitational wave with up to six polarizations. Searching for the polarizations beyond plus and cross is an important test of general relativity. In principle, one space-borne detector, like LISA, could measure the gravitational wave polarizations from a long time observation with its orbital motion. With the comparable sensitivities, the joint LISA and TAIJI missions will improve the observations on the polarization predictions of theories beyond general relativity. In this work, a class of parameterized post-Einsteinian waveform is employed to describe the alternative polarizations, and six parameterized post-Einsteinian parameters quantifying from general relativity waveform are examined by using the LISA-TAIJI network. Our results show that the measurements on amplitudes of alternative polarizations from joint LISA-TAIJI observation could be improved by more than 10 times compared to LISA single mission in an optimal scenario.
