Oscillation Frequencies of Moderately Rotating Delta Scuti Stars: Asymmetric Mode Splittings Due to Non-spherical Distortion

We find that the observed pressure-mode rotational splittings of slowly/moderately rotating Delta Scuti stars and Beta Cephei stars mostly have a positive asymmetry. That is, the left frequency spacing is larger than the right spacing in the dipole mode splitting triplets and the $l=2$ mode splitting multiplets (considering $m=1, 0, -1$ modes only). This is in agreement with the second-order perturbative effect of the rotational non-spherical distortion: both the prograde and retrograde modes have their frequencies shifted towards lower values relative to the $m=0$ modes. We thus study the rotational perturbation both in the first and second order, as well as the near-degeneracy mode coupling effect in MESA models representing Delta Scuti stars. For faster rotators, the near-degeneracy mode coupling between the nearest radial and quadrupole modes can significantly shift the $m=0$ modes, reduce the splitting asymmetry, and even change its sign. We find the theoretical splitting asymmetry from the second-order non-spherical distortion is larger than observed asymmetry. To facilitate future detections, we predict correlations between splitting asymmetry, splitting amplitude, and pulsation frequency. We also discuss additional factors that can influence splitting asymmetry, including embedded magnetic fields, resonant mode coupling, and binarity.

FineDiffusion: Scaling up Diffusion Models for Fine-grained Image Generation with 10,000 Classes

The class-conditional image generation based on diffusion models is renowned for generating high-quality and diverse images. However, most prior efforts focus on generating images for general categories, e.g., 1000 classes in ImageNet-1k. A more challenging task, large-scale fine-grained image generation, remains the boundary to explore. In this work, we present a parameter-efficient strategy, called FineDiffusion, to fine-tune large pre-trained diffusion models scaling to large-scale fine-grained image generation with 10,000 categories. FineDiffusion significantly accelerates training and reduces storage overhead by only fine-tuning tiered class embedder, bias terms, and normalization layers' parameters. To further improve the image generation quality of fine-grained categories, we propose a novel sampling method for fine-grained image generation, which utilizes superclass-conditioned guidance, specifically tailored for fine-grained categories, to replace the conventional classifier-free guidance sampling. Compared to full fine-tuning, FineDiffusion achieves a remarkable 1.56x training speed-up and requires storing merely 1.77% of the total model parameters, while achieving state-of-the-art FID of 9.776 on image generation of 10,000 classes. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method compared to other parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods. The code and more generated results are available at our project website: https://finediffusion.github.io/.

Mott insulating phase and coherent-incoherent crossover across magnetic phase transition in 2D antiferromagnetic CrSBr

In two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, the interplay between magnetism and electron correlation can give rise to new ground states and lead to novel transport and optical properties. A fundamental question in these materials is how the electron correlation manifests and interacts with the magnetic orders. In this study, we demonstrate that the recently discovered 2D antiferromagnetic material, CrSBr, is a Mott insulator, through the combined use of resonant and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy techiniques, supplemented by dynamical mean-field theory analysis. Intriguingly, we found that as the system transitions from the antiferromagnetic to the paramagnetic phases, its Mott bands undergo a reconfiguration, and a coherent-incoherent crossover, driven by the dissolution of the magnetic order. Our findings reveal a distinctive evolution of band structure associated with magnetic phase transitions, shedding light on the investigation of intricate interplay between correlation and magnetic orders in strongly correlated van der Waals magnetic materials.

Revision Matters: Generative Design Guided by Revision Edits

Layout design, such as user interface or graphical layout in general, is fundamentally an iterative revision process. Through revising a design repeatedly, the designer converges on an ideal layout. In this paper, we investigate how revision edits from human designer can benefit a multimodal generative model. To do so, we curate an expert dataset that traces how human designers iteratively edit and improve a layout generation with a prompted language goal. Based on such data, we explore various supervised fine-tuning task setups on top of a Gemini multimodal backbone, a large multimodal model. Our results show that human revision plays a critical role in iterative layout refinement. While being noisy, expert revision edits lead our model to a surprisingly strong design FID score ~10 which is close to human performance (~6). In contrast, self-revisions that fully rely on model's own judgement, lead to an echo chamber that prevents iterative improvement, and sometimes leads to generative degradation. Fortunately, we found that providing human guidance plays at early stage plays a critical role in final generation. In such human-in-the-loop scenario, our work paves the way for iterative design revision based on pre-trained large multimodal models.

Asteroseismic measurement of core and envelope rotation rates for 2006 red giant branch stars

Tens of thousands of red giant stars in the Kepler data exhibit solar-like oscillations. Their oscillations enable us to study the internal physics from core to surface, such as differential rotation. However, envelope rotation rates have been measured for only a dozen RGB stars so far. The limited sample hinders the theoretical interpretation of angular momentum transport in post-main-sequence phases. We apply a new approach to calculate the asymptotic frequencies of mixed modes, which accounts for the so-called near-degeneracy effects and leads to more proper measurements of envelope rotation rates. By fitting these asymptotic expressions to the observations, we obtain measurements of the properties of g modes and mean core and envelope rotation rates. Among 2495 stars with clear mixed-mode patterns, we found that 800 show doublets and 1206 show triplets, doubling the size of pre-existing catalogues. This led us to discover an over-density of stars that narrowly distribute around a well-defined ridge in the plane showing core rotation rate versus evolution along the RGB. With this work, we also increase the sample of stars with measured envelope rotation rates by two orders of magnitude. We find a decreasing trend between envelope rotation rates and evolution, implying that the envelopes slow down with expansion, as expected. We find 243 stars whose envelope rotation rates are significantly larger than zero. For these stars, the core-to-envelope rotation ratios are around 20 and show a large spread with evolution. Several stars show extremely mild differential rotations, with core-to-surface ratios between 1 and 2. These stars also have very slow core rotation rates, suggesting that they go through a peculiar rotational evolution. We also discovered more stars located below the degeneracy sequence, which will provide the opportunity to study the history of possible stellar mergers.

StraightPCF: Straight Point Cloud Filtering

Point cloud filtering is a fundamental 3D vision task, which aims to remove noise while recovering the underlying clean surfaces. State-of-the-art methods remove noise by moving noisy points along stochastic trajectories to the clean surfaces. These methods often require regularization within the training objective and/or during post-processing, to ensure fidelity. In this paper, we introduce StraightPCF, a new deep learning based method for point cloud filtering. It works by moving noisy points along straight paths, thus reducing discretization errors while ensuring faster convergence to the clean surfaces. We model noisy patches as intermediate states between high noise patch variants and their clean counterparts, and design the VelocityModule to infer a constant flow velocity from the former to the latter. This constant flow leads to straight filtering trajectories. In addition, we introduce a DistanceModule that scales the straight trajectory using an estimated distance scalar to attain convergence near the clean surface. Our network is lightweight and only has $\sim530K$ parameters, being 17% of IterativePFN (a most recent point cloud filtering network). Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world data show our method achieves state-of-the-art results. Our method also demonstrates nice distributions of filtered points without the need for regularization. The implementation code can be found at: https://github.com/ddsediri/StraightPCF.

Production of $X_b$ via radiative transition of $Υ(10753)$

We studied the radiative transitions between the $Υ(10753)$, the $S$-$D$ mixed state of the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ_1(3\,{}^3D_1)$, and the $X_b$, the heavy quark flavor symmetry counterpart of the $X(3782)$ in the bottomonium sector. The radiative transition was assumed to occur through the intermediate bottom mesons, including $P$-wave $B_1^{(\prime)}$ mesons as well as the $S$-wave $B^{(*)}$ ones. The consideration of the $B_1^{(\prime)}$ mesons leads to the couplings to be in $S$-wave, and hence enhances the contributions of the intermediate meson loops. The radiative decay width for the $Υ(10753)\toγX_b$ is predicted to be order of $10~\mathrm{keV}$, corresponding to a branching fraction of $10^{-4}$. Based on the theoretical results, we strongly suggest to search for the $X_b$ in the $e^+e^-\toγX_b$ with $X_b\toππχ_{b1}$ near $\sqrt{s}=10.754~\mathrm{GeV}$, and it is hoped that the calculations here could be tested by the future Belle II experiments.

Lightweight Change Detection in Heterogeneous Remote Sensing Images with Online All-Integer Pruning Training

Detection of changes in heterogeneous remote sensing images is vital, especially in response to emergencies like earthquakes and floods. Current homogenous transformation-based change detection (CD) methods often suffer from high computation and memory costs, which are not friendly to edge-computation devices like onboard CD devices at satellites. To address this issue, this paper proposes a new lightweight CD method for heterogeneous remote sensing images that employs the online all-integer pruning (OAIP) training strategy to efficiently fine-tune the CD network using the current test data. The proposed CD network consists of two visual geometry group (VGG) subnetworks as the backbone architecture. In the OAIP-based training process, all the weights, gradients, and intermediate data are quantized to integers to speed up training and reduce memory usage, where the per-layer block exponentiation scaling scheme is utilized to reduce the computation errors of network parameters caused by quantization. Second, an adaptive filter-level pruning method based on the L1-norm criterion is employed to further lighten the fine-tuning process of the CD network. Experimental results show that the proposed OAIP-based method attains similar detection performance (but with significantly reduced computation complexity and memory usage) in comparison with state-of-the-art CD methods.

Early Autism Diagnosis based on Path Signature and Siamese Unsupervised Feature Compressor

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been emerging as a growing public health threat. Early diagnosis of ASD is crucial for timely, effective intervention and treatment. However, conventional diagnosis methods based on communications and behavioral patterns are unreliable for children younger than 2 years of age. Given evidences of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in ASD infants, we resort to a novel deep learning-based method to extract key features from the inherently scarce, class-imbalanced, and heterogeneous structural MR images for early autism diagnosis. Specifically, we propose a Siamese verification framework to extend the scarce data, and an unsupervised compressor to alleviate data imbalance by extracting key features. We also proposed weight constraints to cope with sample heterogeneity by giving different samples different voting weights during validation, and we used Path Signature to unravel meaningful developmental features from the two-time point data longitudinally. We further extracted machine learning focused brain regions for autism diagnosis. Extensive experiments have shown that our method performed well under practical scenarios, transcending existing machine learning methods and providing anatomical insights for autism early diagnosis.

Analysis of $B_s^0 \to X(3872) [ψ(2S)] π^+π^- (K^+ K^-)$ decays

We have phenomenologically investigated the decays $B_s^0 \to X(3872) π^+π^- (K^+ K^-)$ and $B_s^0 \to ψ(2S) π^+ π^- (K^+K^-)$. In our analysis, the scalar meson $f_0(980)$ is formed through the final state interactions of coupled channels $ππ$ and $K\bar{K}$. Our findings indicate that the $π^+π^-$ invariant mass distribution of the $B_s^0 \to ψ(2S)π^+π^-$ decay can be accurately reproduced. Furthermore, we have explored the $π^+π^- (K^+ K^-)$ invariant mass distribution of the $B_s^0 \to X(3872) π^+π^- (K^+ K^-)$ decay, accounting for the different production mechanisms between $X(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$, up to a global factor. It is found that the production rates for $X(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ are much different, which indicates that the structure of $X(3872)$ is more complicated than the $ψ(2S)$, which is a conventional $c\bar{c}$ state. Additionally, we have considered the contributions from $f_0(1500)$ to $π^+π^-$ and the $ϕ$ meson to $K^+ K^-$ in our analysis. Utilizing the model parameters, we have calculated the branching fraction of $B_s^0 \to X(3872) K^+ K^-$, and anticipate that the findings of our study can be experimentally tested in the future.

Using Polyvinyl Alcohol as Polymeric Adhesive to Enhance the Water Stability of Soil and its Performance

Soil degradation threatens agricultural productivity and food supply, leading to hunger issues in some developing regions. To address this challenge, we developed a low-cost, highly efficient, and long-term stable soil improvement method. We chose polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a commercially available polymer that is safe and non-degradable, to serve as a soil adhesive. We mixed PVA solution into the soil and applied a drying treatment to enhance the bonding between PVA and the soil, achieving highly water-stable soil. This PVA-stabilized soil exhibits low bulk density, high porosity, and high permeability, making it an ideal substrate for planting. In a germination test, the PVA-stabilized soil revealed a higher germination rate and growth rate compared to those of the non-treated soil. We believe this simple and efficient soil improvement method can restore degraded soil and contribute to sustainable agriculture.

Automatic Macro Mining from Interaction Traces at Scale

Macros are building block tasks of our everyday smartphone activity (e.g., "login", or "booking a flight"). Effectively extracting macros is important for understanding mobile interaction and enabling task automation. These macros are however difficult to extract at scale as they can be comprised of multiple steps yet hidden within programmatic components of mobile apps. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach based on Large Language Models (LLMs) to automatically extract semantically meaningful macros from both random and user-curated mobile interaction traces. The macros produced by our approach are automatically tagged with natural language descriptions and are fully executable. We conduct multiple studies to validate the quality of extracted macros, including user evaluation, comparative analysis against human-curated tasks, and automatic execution of these macros. These experiments and analyses show the effectiveness of our approach and the usefulness of extracted macros in various downstream applications.

Cost-effective company response policy for product co-creation in company-sponsored online community

Product co-creation based on company-sponsored online community has come to be a paradigm of developing new products collaboratively with customers. In such a product co-creation campaign, the sponsoring company needs to interact intensively with active community members about the design scheme of the product. We call the collection of the rates of the company's response to active community members at all time in the co-creation campaign as a company response policy (CRP). This paper addresses the problem of finding a cost-effective CRP (the CRP problem). First, we introduce a novel community state evolutionary model and, thereby, establish an optimal control model for the CRP problem (the CRP model). Second, based on the optimality system for the CRP model, we present an iterative algorithm for solving the CRP model (the CRP algorithm). Thirdly, through extensive numerical experiments, we conclude that the CRP algorithm converges and the resulting CRP exhibits excellent cost benefit. Consequently, we recommend the resulting CRP to companies that embrace product co-creation. Next, we discuss how to implement the resulting CRP. Finally, we investigate the effect of some factors on the cost benefit of the resulting CRP. To our knowledge, this work is the first attempt to study value co-creation through optimal control theoretic approach.

PDXpower: A Power Analysis Tool for Experimental Design in Pre-clinical Xenograft Studies for Uncensored and Censored Outcomes

In cancer research, leveraging patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) in pre-clinical experiments is a crucial approach for assessing innovative therapeutic strategies. Addressing the inherent variability in treatment response among and within individual PDX lines is essential. However, the current literature lacks a user-friendly statistical power analysis tool capable of concurrently determining the required number of PDX lines and animals per line per treatment group in this context. In this paper, we present a simulation-based R package for sample size determination, named `\textbf{PDXpower}', which is publicly available at The Comprehensive R Archive Network \url{https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=PDXpower}. The package is designed to estimate the necessary number of both PDX lines and animals per line per treatment group for the design of a PDX experiment, whether for an uncensored outcome, or a censored time-to-event outcome. Our sample size considerations rely on two widely used analytical frameworks: the mixed effects ANOVA model for uncensored outcomes and Cox's frailty model for censored data outcomes, which effectively account for both inter-PDX variability and intra-PDX correlation in treatment response. Step-by-step illustrations for utilizing the developed package are provided, catering to scenarios with or without preliminary data.

Rich Human Feedback for Text-to-Image Generation

Recent Text-to-Image (T2I) generation models such as Stable Diffusion and Imagen have made significant progress in generating high-resolution images based on text descriptions. However, many generated images still suffer from issues such as artifacts/implausibility, misalignment with text descriptions, and low aesthetic quality. Inspired by the success of Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) for large language models, prior works collected human-provided scores as feedback on generated images and trained a reward model to improve the T2I generation. In this paper, we enrich the feedback signal by (i) marking image regions that are implausible or misaligned with the text, and (ii) annotating which words in the text prompt are misrepresented or missing on the image. We collect such rich human feedback on 18K generated images (RichHF-18K) and train a multimodal transformer to predict the rich feedback automatically. We show that the predicted rich human feedback can be leveraged to improve image generation, for example, by selecting high-quality training data to finetune and improve the generative models, or by creating masks with predicted heatmaps to inpaint the problematic regions. Notably, the improvements generalize to models (Muse) beyond those used to generate the images on which human feedback data were collected (Stable Diffusion variants). The RichHF-18K data set will be released in our GitHub repository: https://github.com/google-research/google-research/tree/master/richhf_18k.

Terraced Compression Method with Automated Threshold Selection for Multidimensional Image Clustering of Heterogeneous Bodies

Multispectral transmission imaging provides strong benefits for early breast cancer screening. The frame accumulation method addresses the challenge of low grayscale and signal-to-noise ratio resulting from the strong absorption and scattering of light by breast tissue. This method introduces redundancy in data while improving the grayscale and signal-to-noise ratio of the image. Existing terraced compression algorithms effectively eliminate the data redundancy introduced by frame accumulation but necessitate significant time for manual debugging of threshold values. Hence, this paper proposes an improved terrace compression algorithm. The algorithm necessitates solely the input of the desired heterogeneous body size and autonomously calculates the optimal area threshold and gradient threshold by counting the grayscale and combining its distribution. Experimental acquisition involved multi-wavelength images of heterogeneous bodies exhibiting diverse textures, depths, and thicknesses. Subsequently, the method was applied after pre-processing to determine the thresholds for terraced compression at each wavelength, coupled with a window function for multi-dimensional image clustering. The results illustrate the method's efficacy in detecting and identifying various heterogeneous body types, depths, and thicknesses. This approach is expected to accurately identify the locations and types of breast tumors in the future, thus providing a more dependable tool for early breast cancer screening.
