Mixed states for reference frames transformations

We discuss the concept of transformations among reference frames (classical or quantum). Usually transformations among classical reference frames have sharply defined parameters; geometrically they can be considered as {pure states in the parameters' space, and they form a group. It is however possible that the distributions in the parameters' space are mixed states; such states form a semigroup. Similarly, transformations among quantum reference frames can be either pure or mixed. This gives rise to interesting consequences: the state of a system can be pure with respect to a reference frame and mixed with respect to another; we concretely discuss this in the framework of Galilei transformations in 1+1 dimensions. In particular, if the state of a reference frame with respect to another frame is thermal at some temperature, a quantum particle in the pure (improper) rest state with respect to the first frame will appear in a thermal state with a related nonzero temperature with respect to the other. This can also be discussed in relation to the time/energy uncertainty relation.

An analytical optimization of plasma density profiles for downramp injection in laser wake-field acceleration

We propose and detail a multi-step analytical procedure, based on an improved fully relativistic plane model for Laser Wake Field Acceleration, to tailor the initial density of a cold diluted plasma to the laser pulse profile, so as to control and optimize the partial wave-breaking of the plasma wave and maximize the acceleration of small bunches of electrons self-injected by the first wave-breaking at the density down-ramp, at least in the first stages of their acceleration phase. We find an excellent agreement with the results of Particle In Cell simulations obtained with the same input data.

General $O(D)$-equivariant fuzzy hyperspheres via confining potentials and energy cutoffs

We summarize our recent construction of new fuzzy hyperspheres $S^d_{\Lambda}$ of arbitrary dimension $d$ covariant under the {\it full} orthogonal group $O(D)$, $D=d+1$. We impose a suitable energy cutoff on a quantum particle in $\mathbb{R}^D$ subject to a confining potential well $V(r)$ with a very sharp minimum on the sphere of radius $r=1$; the cutoff and the depth of the well diverge with $\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}$. Consequently, the commutators of the Cartesian coordinates $\overline{x}^i$ are proportional to the angular momentum components $L_{ij}$, as in Snyder's noncommutative spaces. The $\overline{x}^i$ generate the whole algebra of observables ${\cal A}_{\Lambda}$ and thus the whole Hilbert space ${\cal H}_{\Lambda}$ when applied to any state. $\mathcal{H}_{\Lambda}$ carries a reducible representation of $O(D)$ isomorphic to the space of harmonic homogeneous polynomials of degree $\Lambda$ in the Cartesian coordinates of (commutative) $\mathbb{R}^{D+1}$; the latter carries an irreducible representation $\pi_\Lambda$ of $O(D\!+\!1)\supset O(D)$. Moreover, ${\cal A}_{\Lambda}$ is isomorphic to $\pi_\Lambda\left(Uso(D\!+\!1)\right)$. We identify the subspace ${\cal C}_\Lambda\subset{\cal A}_{\Lambda}$ spanned by fuzzy spherical harmonics. We interpret $\{{\cal H}_\Lambda\}_{\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}}$, $\{{\cal C}_\Lambda\}_{\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}}$ as fuzzy deformations of the space of square integrable functions and the space of continuous functions on $S^d$ respectively, $\{{\cal A}_\Lambda\}_{\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}}$ as fuzzy deformation of the associated algebra of observables. $\{{\cal A}_\Lambda\}_{\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}}$ yields a fuzzy quantization of a coadjoint orbit of $O(D\!+\!1)$ that goes to the classical phase space $T^*S^d$. These models might be useful in quantum field theory, quantum gravity or condensed matter physics.

Hydrodynamic regime and cold plasmas hit by short laser pulses

We briefly report and elaborate on some conditions allowing a hydrodynamic description of the impact of a very short and arbitrarily intense laser pulse onto a cold plasma, as well as the localization of the first wave-breaking due to the plasma inhomogeneity. We use a recently developed fully relativistic plane model whereby we reduce the system of the Lorentz-Maxwell and continuity PDEs into a 1-parameter family of decoupled systems of non-autonomous Hamilton equations in dimension 1, with the light-like coordinate $\xi=ct\!-\!z$ replacing time $t$ as an independent variable. Apriori estimates on the Jacobian $\hat J$ of the change from Lagrangian to Eulerian coordinates in terms of the input data (initial density and pulse profile) are obtained applying Liapunov direct method to an associated family of pairs of ODEs; wave-breaking is pinpointed by the inequality $\hat J\le 0$. These results may help in drastically simplifying the study of extreme acceleration mechanisms of electrons, which have very important applications.

A preliminary analysis for efficient laser wakefield acceleration

We propose a preliminary analytical procedure in 4 steps (based on an improved fully relativistic plane hydrodynamic model) to tailor the initial density of a cold diluted plasma to the laser pulse profile so as to control wave-breaking (WB) of the plasma wave and maximize the acceleration of small bunches of electrons self-injected by the first WB at the density down-ramp.

On the impact of short laser pulses on cold diluted plasmas

We analytically study the impact of a short laser pulse onto an inhomogeneous cold diluted plasma at rest, in particular: the duration of the hydrodynamic regime; the formation and the features of plasma waves (PWs); their wave-breakings (WBs); the motion of test electrons injected in the PWs. If the pulse is a plane wave travelling in the $z$-direction, and the initial plasma density (IPD) depends only on $z$, then suitable matched bounds on the maximum and relative variations of the IPD, as well as the intensity and duration of the pulse, ensure a strictly hydrodynamic evolution of the electron fluid during its whole interaction with the pulse, while ions can be regarded as immobile. This evolution is ruled by a family (parametrized by $Z\ge 0$) of decoupled systems of non-autonomous Hamilton equations with 1 degree of freedom, which determine how electrons initially located in the layer $Z\le z<Z+dZ$ move; $\xi=ct-z$ replaces time $t$ as the independent variable. This family of ODEs is obtained by reduction from the Lorentz-Maxwell and continuity PDEs for the electrons' fluid within the spacetime region where the change of the pulse is negligible. After the laser-plasma interaction the Jacobian of the map from Lagrangian to Eulerian coordinates is linear-quasi-periodic in $\xi$. We determine spacetime locations and features of the first wave-breakings of the wakefield PWs, the motion of test electrons (self-)injected in the PWs. The energy of those trapped in a single PW trough grows linearly with the distance gone, where the IPD is constant. If the pulse has cylindrical symmetry and a not too small radius, the same conclusions hold for the part of the plasma enclosed within the causal cone swept by it. This computationally light approach may help in a preliminary study of extreme acceleration mechanisms of electrons (LWFA, etc.), before 2D or 3D PIC simulations.

Fuzzy hyperspheres via confining potentials and energy cutoffs

We simplify and complete the construction of fully $O(D)$-equivariant fuzzy spheres $S^d_L$, for all dimensions $d\equiv D-1$, initiated in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423]. This is based on imposing a suitable energy cutoff on a quantum particle in $\mathbb{R}^D$ in a confining potential well $V(r)$ with a very sharp minimum on the sphere of radius $r=1$; the cutoff and the depth of the well diverge with $L\in\mathbb{N}$. As a result, the noncommutative Cartesian coordinates $\overline{x}^i$ generate the whole algebra of observables $A_L$ on the Hilbert space $H_L$; $H_L$ can be recovered applying polynomials in the $\overline{x}^i$ to any of its elements. The commutators of the $\overline{x}^i$ are proportional to the angular momentum components, as in Snyder noncommutative spaces. $H_L$, as carrier space of a reducible representation of $O(D)$, is isomorphic to the space of harmonic homogeneous polynomials of degree $L$ in the Cartesian coordinates of (commutative) $\mathbb{R}^{D+1}$, which carries an irreducible representation ${\bf\pi}_L$ of $O(D+1)\supset O(D)$. Moreover, $A_L$ is isomorphic to ${\bf\pi}_L\left(Uso(D+1)\right)$. We resp. interpret $\{H_L\}_{L\in\mathbb{N}}$, $\{A_L\}_{L\in\mathbb{N}}$ as fuzzy deformations of the space $H_s:={\cal L}^2(S^d)$ of (square integrable) functions on $S^d$ and of the associated algebra $A_s$ of observables, because they resp. go to $H_s,A_s$ as $L$ diverges (with $\hbar$ fixed). With suitable $\hbar=\hbar(L)\stackrel{L\to\infty}{\longrightarrow} 0$, in the same limit $A_L$ goes to the (algebra of functions on the) Poisson manifold $T^*S^d$; more formally, $\{A_L\}_{L\in\mathbb{N}}$ yields a fuzzy quantization of a coadjoint orbit of $O(D+1)$ that goes to the classical phase space $T^*S^d$.

Hydrodynamic impacts of short laser pulses on plasmas

We determine conditions allowing to simplify the description of the impact of a short and arbitrarily intense laser pulse onto a cold plasma at rest. If both the initial plasma density and pulse profile have plane simmetry, then suitable matched upper bounds on the maximum and the relative variations of the initial density, as well as the intensity and duration of the pulse, ensure a strictly hydrodynamic evolution of the electron fluid (without wave-breaking or vacuum-heating) during its whole interaction with the pulse, while ions can be regarded as immobile. We use a recently developed fully relativistic plane model whereby the system of the (Lorentz-Maxwell and continuity) PDEs is reduced into a family of highly nonlinear but decoupled systems of non-autonomous Hamilton equations with one degree of freedom, with the light-like coordinate $\xi=ct\!-\!z$ instead of time $t$ as an independent variable, and new apriori estimates (eased by use of a Liapunov function) of the solutions in terms of the input data (initial density and pulse profile). If the laser spot radius $R$ is finite but not too small the same conclusions hold for the part of the plasma close to the axis $\vec{z}$ of cylindrical symmetry. These results may help in drastically simplifying the study of extreme acceleration mechanisms of electrons.

The time-dependent harmonic oscillator revisited

We point out a rather effective approach for solving the time-dependent harmonic oscillator $\ddot q=-\omega^2 q$ under various regularity assumptions. Where $\omega(t )$ is $C^1$ this is reduced to Hamilton equation for the angle variable $\psi$ {\it alone} (the action variable ${\cal I}$ is obtained \it by quadrature}). The fixed point theorem for the integral equation equivalent to the generic Cauchy problem for $\psi(t )$ yields a sequence $\{\psi^{(h)}\}_{h\in\mathbb{N}_0}$ converging to $\psi$ rather fast; if $\omega$ varies slowly or little, already $\psi^{(0)}$ approximates $\psi$ well for rather long time lapses. The discontinuities of $\omega$, if any, determine those of $\psi,{\cal I}$. The zeros of $q,\dot q$ are investigated via Riccati equations. Our approach may simplify the study of: upper and lower bounds on the solutions; the stability of the trivial one; parametric resonance when $\omega(t )$ is periodic; the adiabatic invariance of ${\cal I}$; asymptotic expansions in a slow time parameter $\varepsilon$; time-dependent driven and damped parametric oscillators; etc.

Twisted geometry for submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$

This is a friendly introduction to our recent general procedure for constructing noncommutative deformations of an embedded submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ determined by a set of smooth equations $f^a(x)=0$. We use the framework of Drinfel'd twist deformation of differential geometry pioneered in [Aschieri et al., Class. Quantum Gravity 23 (2006), 1883]; the commutative pointwise product is replaced by a (generally noncommutative) $\star$-product induced by a Drinfel'd twist.

Light-front approach to relativistic electrodynamics

We illustrate how our recent light-front approach simplifies relativistic electrodynamics with an electromagnetic (EM) field $F^{\mu\nu}$ that is the sum of a (even very intense) plane travelling wave $F_t^{\mu\nu}(ct\!-\!z)$ and a static part $F_s^{\mu\nu}(x,y,z)$; it adopts the light-like coordinate $\xi=ct\!-\!z$ instead of time $t$ as an independent variable. This can be applied to several cases of extreme acceleration, both in vacuum and in a cold diluted plasma hit by a very short and intense laser pulse (slingshot effect, plasma wave-breaking and laser wake-field acceleration, etc.)

Energy cutoff, effective theories, noncommutativity, fuzzyness: the case of O(D)-covariant fuzzy spheres

Projecting a quantum theory onto the Hilbert subspace of states with energies below a cutoff $\overline{E}$ may lead to an effective theory with modified observables, including a noncommutative space(time). Adding a confining potential well $V$ with a very sharp minimum on a submanifold $N$ of the original space(time) $M$ may induce a dimensional reduction to a noncommutative quantum theory on $N$. Here in particular we briefly report on our application of this procedure to spheres $S^d\subset\mathbb{R}^D$ of radius $r=1$ ($D=d\!+\!1>1$): making $\overline{E}$ and the depth of the well depend on (and diverge with) $\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}$ we obtain new fuzzy spheres $S^d_{\Lambda}$ covariant under the {\it full} orthogonal groups $O(D)$; the commutators of the coordinates depend only on the angular momentum, as in Snyder noncommutative spaces. Focusing on $d=1,2$, we also discuss uncertainty relations, localization of states, diagonalization of the space coordinates and construction of coherent states. As $\Lambda\to\infty$ the Hilbert space dimension diverges, $S^d_{\Lambda}\to S^d$, and we recover ordinary quantum mechanics on $S^d$. These models might be suggestive for effective models in quantum field theory, quantum gravity or condensed matter physics.

Twisted Quadrics and Algebraic Submanifolds in $\mathbb{R}^n$

We propose a general procedure to construct noncommutative deformations of an algebraic submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, specializing the procedure [G. Fiore, T. Weber, Twisted submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$, arXiv:2003.03854] valid for smooth submanifolds. We use the framework of twisted differential geometry of Aschieri et al. (Class. Quantum Grav. 23, 1883-1911, 2006), whereby the commutative pointwise product is replaced by the $\star$-product determined by a Drinfel'd twist. We actually simultaneously construct noncommutative deformations of all the algebraic submanifolds $M_c$ that are level sets of the $f^a(x)$, where $f^a(x)=0$ are the polynomial equations solved by the points of $M$, employing twists based on the Lie algebra $\Xi_t$ of vector fields that are tangent to all the $M_c$. The twisted Cartan calculus is automatically equivariant under twisted $\Xi_t$. If we endow $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a metric, then twisting and projecting to normal or tangent components commute, projecting the Levi-Civita connection to the twisted $M$ is consistent, and in particular a twisted Gauss theorem holds, provided the twist is based on Killing vector fields. Twisted algebraic quadrics can be characterized in terms of generators and $\star$-polynomial relations. We explicitly work out deformations based on abelian or Jordanian twists of all quadrics in $\mathbb{R}^3$ except ellipsoids, in particular twisted cylinders embedded in twisted Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^3$ and twisted hyperboloids embedded in twisted Minkowski $\mathbb{R}^3$ [the latter are twisted (anti-)de Sitter spaces $dS_2$, $AdS_2$].

Twisted submanifolds of R^n

We propose a general procedure to construct noncommutative deformations of an embedded submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ determined by a set of smooth equations $f^a(x)=0$. We use the framework of Drinfel'd twist deformation of differential geometry of [Aschieri et al., Class. Quantum Gravity 23 (2006), 1883]; the commutative pointwise product is replaced by a (generally noncommutative) $\star$-product determined by a Drinfel'd twist. The twists we employ are based on the Lie algebra $\Xi_t$ of vector fields that are tangent to all the submanifolds that are level sets of the $f^a$; the twisted Cartan calculus is automatically equivariant under twisted tangent infinitesimal diffeomorphisms. We can consistently project a connection from the twisted $\mathbb{R}^n$ to the twisted $M$ if the twist is based on a suitable Lie subalgebra $\mathfrak{e}\subset\Xi_t$. If we endow $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a metric then twisting and projecting to the normal and tangent vector fields commute, and we can project the Levi-Civita connection consistently to the twisted $M$, provided the twist is based on the Lie subalgebra $\mathfrak{k}\subset\mathfrak{e}$ of the Killing vector fields of the metric; a twisted Gauss theorem follows, in particular. Twisted algebraic manifolds can be characterized in terms of generators and polynomial relations. We present in some detail twisted cylinders embedded in twisted Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^3$ and twisted hyperboloids embedded in twisted Minkowski $\mathbb{R}^3$ [these are twisted (anti-)de Sitter spaces $dS_2,AdS_2$].

On localized and coherent states on some new fuzzy spheres

We construct various systems of coherent states (SCS) on the $O(D)$-equivariant fuzzy spheres $S^d_\Lambda$ ($d=1,2$, $D=d\!+\!1$) constructed in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451] and study their localizations in configuration space as well as angular momentum space. These localizations are best expressed through the $O(D)$-invariant square space and angular momentum uncertainties $(\Delta\boldsymbol{x})^2,(\Delta\boldsymbol{L})^2$ in the ambient Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^D$. We also determine general bounds (e.g. uncertainty relations from commutation relations) for $(\Delta\boldsymbol{x})^2,(\Delta\boldsymbol{L})^2$, and partly investigate which SCS may saturate these bounds. In particular, we determine $O(D)$-equivariant systems of optimally localized coherent states, which are the closest quantum states to the classical states (i.e. points) of $S^d$. We compare the results with their analogs on commutative $S^d$. We also show that on $S^2_\Lambda$ our optimally localized states are better localized than those on the Madore-Hoppe fuzzy sphere with the same cutoff $\Lambda$.

The $x_i$-eigenvalue problem on some new fuzzy spheres

We study the eigenvalue equation for the 'Cartesian coordinates' observables $x_i$ on the fully $O(2)$-covariant fuzzy circle $\{S^1_\Lambda\}_{\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}}$ ($i=1,2$) and on the fully $O(3)$-covariant fuzzy 2-sphere $\{S^2_\Lambda\}_{\Lambda\in\mathbb{N}}$ ($i=1,2,3$) introduced in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451]. We show that the spectrum and eigenvectors of $x_i$ fulfill a number of properties which are expected for $x_i$ to approximate well the corresponding coordinate operator of a quantum particle forced to stay on the unit sphere.

New fuzzy spheres through confining potentials and energy cutoffs

We briefly report our recent construction of new fuzzy spheres of dimensions d=1,2 covariant under the full orthogonal group O(D), D=d+1. They are built by imposing a suitable energy cutoff on a quantum particle in D dimensions subject to a confining potential well V(r) with a very sharp minimum on the sphere of radius r=1; furthermore, the cutoff and the depth of the well depend on (and diverge with) a natural number L. The commutator of the coordinates depends only on the angular momentum, as in Snyder noncommutative spaces. When L diverges, the Hilbert space dimension diverges, too; S^d_L converges to S^d, and we recover ordinary quantum mechanics on S^d. These models might be useful in quantum field theory, quantum gravity or condensed matter physics.

Travelling waves and light-front approach in relativistic electrodynamics

We briefly report on a recent proposal (Fiore in J Phys A Math Theor 51:085203, 2018) for simplifying the equations of motion of charged particles in an electromagnetic (EM) field $F^{\mu\nu}$ that is the sum of a plane travelling wave $F_t^{\mu\nu}(ct\!-\!z)$ and a static part $F_s^{\mu\nu}(x,y,z)$; it adopts the light-like coordinate $\xi=ct\!-\!z$ instead of time $t$ as an independent variable. We illustrate it in a few cases of extreme acceleration, first of an isolated particle, then of electrons in a plasma in plane hydrodynamic conditions: the Lorentz-Maxwell \& continuity PDEs can be simplified or sometimes even completely reduced to a family of decoupled systems of ordinary ones; this occurs e.g. with the impact of the travelling wave on a vacuum-plasma interface (what may produce plasma waves or the slingshot effect).
