Effective Differential Lüroth's Theorem

This paper focuses on effectivity aspects of the Lüroth's theorem in differential fields. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be an ordinary differential field of characteristic 0 and $\mathcal{F} $ be the field of differential rational functions generated by a single indeterminate $u$. Let be given non constant rational functions $v_1,...,v_n\in \mathcal{F} $ generating a differential subfield $\mathcal{G}\subseteq \mathcal{F} $. The differential Lüroth's theorem proved by Ritt in 1932 states that there exists $v\in \mathcal G$ such that $\mathcal{G}= \mathcal{F} $. Here we prove that the total order and degree of a generator $v$ are bounded by $\min_j \textrm{ord} (v_j)$ and $(nd(e+1)+1)^{2e+1}$, respectively, where $e:=\max_j \textrm{ord} (v_j)$ and $d:=\max_j \textrm{deg} (v_j)$. As a byproduct, our techniques enable us to compute a Lüroth generator by dealing with a polynomial ideal in a polynomial ring in finitely many variables.

Affine solution sets of sparse polynomial systems

This paper focuses on the equidimensional decomposition of affine varieties defined by sparse polynomial systems. For generic systems with fixed supports, we give combinatorial conditions for the existence of positive dimensional components which characterize the equidimensional decomposition of the associated affine variety. This result is applied to design an equidimensional decomposition algorithm for generic sparse systems. For arbitrary sparse systems of n polynomials in n variables with fixed supports, we obtain an upper bound for the degree of the affine variety defined and we present an algorithm which computes finite sets of points representing its equidimensional components.

On the minimum of a polynomial function on a basic closed semialgebraic set and applications

We give an explicit upper bound for the algebraic degree and an explicit lower bound for the absolute value of the minimum of a polynomial function on a compact connected component of a basic closed semialgebraic set when this minimum is not zero. As an application, we obtain a lower bound for the separation of two disjoint connected components of basic closed semialgebraic sets, when at least one of them is compact.

On the minimum of a positive polynomial over the standard simplex

We present a new positive lower bound for the minimum value taken by a polynomial P with integer coefficients in k variables over the standard simplex of R^k, assuming that P is positive on the simplex. This bound depends only on the number of variables, the degree and the bitsize of the coefficients of P and improves all previous bounds for arbitrary polynomials which are positive over the simplex.

On sign conditions over real multivariate polynomials

We present a new probabilistic algorithm to find a finite set of points intersecting the closure of each connected component of the realization of every sign condition over a family of real polynomials defining regular hypersurfaces that intersect transversally. This enables us to show a probabilistic procedure to list all feasible sign conditions over the polynomials. In addition, we extend these results to the case of closed sign conditions over an arbitrary family of real multivariate polynomials. The complexity bounds for these procedures improve the known ones.

Rational Formulas for Traces in zero-dimensional Algebras

We present a rational expression for the trace of the multiplication map M_r in a finite-dimensional algebra of the form A:=K[x_1,...,x_n]/I in terms of the generalized Chow form of I. Here, I is a zero-dimensional ideal of K[x_1,...,x_n] is a zero-dimensional ideal, K is a field of characteristic zero, and r(x_1,..., x_n) a rational function whose denominator is not a zero divisor in A. If I is a complete intersection in the torus, we get numerator and denominator formulas for traces in terms of sparse resultants.

On the Index and the Order of Quasi-regular Implicit Systems of Differential Equations

This paper is mainly devoted to the study of the differentiation index and the order for quasi-regular implicit ordinary differential algebraic equation (DAE) systems. We give an algebraic definition of the differentiation index and prove a Jacobi-type upper bound for the sum of the order and the differentiation index. Our techniques also enable us to obtain an alternative proof of a combinatorial bound proposed by Jacobi for the order. As a consequence of our approach we deduce an upper bound for the Hilbert-Kolchin regularity and an effective ideal membership test for quasi-regular implicit systems. Finally, we prove a theorem of existence and uniqueness of solutions for implicit differential systems.

A linear algebra approach to the differentiation index of generic DAE systems

The notion of differentiation index for DAE systems of arbitrary order with generic second members is discussed by means of the study of the behavior of the ranks of certain Jacobian associated sub-matrices. As a by-product, we obtain upper bounds for the regularity of the Hilbert-Kolchin function and the order of the ideal associated to the DAE systems under consideration, not depending on characteristic sets. Some quantitative and algorithmic results concerning differential transcendence bases and induced equivalent explicit ODE systems are also established.

Deformation techniques for sparse systems

We exhibit a probabilistic symbolic algorithm for solving zero-dimensional sparse systems. Our algorithm combines a symbolic homotopy procedure, based on a flat deformation of a certain morphism of affine varieties, with the polyhedral deformation of Huber and Sturmfels. The complexity of our algorithm is quadratic in the size of the combinatorial structure of the input system. This size is mainly represented by the mixed volume of Newton polytopes of the input polynomials and an arithmetic analogue of the mixed volume associated to the deformations under consideration.

Subresultants and Generic Monomial Bases

Given n polynomials in n variables of respective degrees d_1,...,d_n, and a set of monomials of cardinality d_1...d_n, we give an explicit subresultant-based polynomial expression in the coefficients of the input polynomials whose non-vanishing is a necessary and sufficient condition for this set of monomials to be a basis of the ring of polynomials in n variables modulo the ideal generated by the system of polynomials. This approach allows us to clarify the algorithms for the Bezout construction of the resultant.

The computational complexity of the Chow form

We present a bounded probability algorithm for the computation of the Chow forms of the equidimensional components of an algebraic variety. Its complexity is polynomial in the length and in the geometric degree of the input equation system defining the variety. In particular, it provides an alternative algorithm for the equidimensional decomposition of a variety. As an application we obtain an algorithm for the computation of a subclass of sparse resultants, whose complexity is polynomial in the dimension and the volume of the input set of exponents. As a further application, we derive an algorithm for the computation of the (unique) solution of a generic over-determined equation system.
