Different critical exponents on two sides of the magnetic transition in two dimensions

The possibility of different critical exponents on two sides of a magnetic transition has been theoretically predicted [PRB 13, 2222 (1976), PRL 115, 200601 (2015)] and experimentally realized [PRL 128, 015703 (2022)] in three-dimensional systems. However, the emergence of such a scenario in two dimensions is not yet established. Here, we report distinct two-dimensional (2D) critical exponents below and above the magnetic transition temperature (TC) through critical scaling analysis in a quasi-2D non-centrosymmetric, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) active hybrid perovskite (C7H9NBr)2CuBr4. The system exhibits critical exponents of 2D Ising-type below TC and 2D XY-type above TC . In contrast, isostructural Cl and centrosymmetric Br analogs, in which the DMI effect is expected to be weaker, exhibit symmetric 2D critical behavior. These results highlight the crucial role of DMI in (C7H9NBr)2CuBr4 as a symmetry-breaking perturbation that alters the magnetic critical behavior differently above and below TC . Our study is the experimental realization of hitherto unreported asymmetric 2D critical behavior in structurally flexible and dimensionally tunable hybrid perovskites.

Unconventional exchange bias coupling at perovskite/brownmillerite interface in spontaneously stabilized SrCoO3-δ/SrCoO2.5 bi-layer

Interface effect in complex oxide thin film heterostructures lies at the vanguard of current research to design technologically relevant functionality and explore emergent physical phenomena. While most of the previous works focus on the perovskite/perovskite heterostructures, the study on perovskite/brownmillerite interfaces remain at its infancy. Here, we investigate spontaneously stabilized perovskite-ferromagnet (SrCoO3-δ)/brownmillertite-antiferromagnet (SrCoO2.5) bi-layer with TN > TC and discover an unconventional interfacial magnetic exchange bias effect. From magnetometry investigations, it is rationalized that the observed effect stems from the interfacial ferromagnet/antiferromagnet coupling. The possibility for coupled ferromagnet/spinglass interface engendering such effect is ruled out. Strikingly, a finite coercive field persists in the paramagnetic state of SrCoO3-δ whereas the exchange bias field vanishes at TC. We conjecture the observed effect to be due to the effective external quenched staggered field provided by the antiferromagtic layer for the ferromagnetic spins at the interface. Our results not only unveil a new paradigm to tailor the interfacial magnetic properties in oxide heterostructures without altering the cations at the interface, but also provide a purview to delve into the fundamental aspects of exchange bias in such unusual systems paving a big step forward in thin film magnetism.

Roughness of Sandpile Surfaces

We study the surface roughness of prototype models displaying self-organized criticality (SOC) and their noncritical variants in one dimension. For SOC systems, we find that two seemingly equivalent definitions of surface roughness yields different asymptotic scaling exponents. Using approximate analytical arguments and extensive numerical studies we conclude that this ambiguity is due to the special scaling properties of the nonlinear steady state surface. We also find that there is no such ambiguity for non-SOC models, although there may be intermediate crossovers to different roughness values. Such crossovers need to be distinguished from the true asymptotic behaviour, as in the case of a noncritical disordered sandpile model studied in [10].
