Lie symmetries of the canonical connection: codimension one abelian nilradical case

This paper studies the canonical symmetric connection $\nabla$ associated to any Lie group $G$. The salient properties of $\nabla$ are stated and proved. The Lie symmetries of the geodesic system of a general linear connection are formulated. The results are then applied to $\nabla$ in the special case where the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$, has a codimension one abelian nilradical. The conditions that determine a Lie symmetry in such a case are completely integrated. Finally the results obtained are compared with some four-dimensional Lie groups whose Lie algebras have three-dimensional abelian nilradicals, for which the calculations were performed by MAPLE.

Face Coverings, Aerosol Dispersion and Mitigation of Virus Transmission Risk

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is primarily transmitted through virus-laden fluid particles ejected from the mouth of infected people. Face covers can mitigate the risk of virus transmission but their outward effectiveness is not fully ascertained. Objective: by using a background oriented schlieren technique, we aim to investigate the air flow ejected by a person while quietly and heavily breathing, while coughing, and with different face covers. Results: we found that all face covers without an outlet valve reduce the front flow through by at least 63% and perhaps as high as 86% if the unfiltered cough jet distance was resolved to the anticipated maximum distance of 2-3 m. However, surgical and handmade masks, and face shields, generate significant leakage jets that may present major hazards. Conclusions: the effectiveness of the masks should mostly be considered based on the generation of secondary jets rather than on the ability to mitigate the front throughflow.

Report on Tests and Measurements of Hadronic Interaction Properties with Air Showers

We present a summary of recent tests and measurements of hadronic interaction properties with air showers. This report has a special focus on muon density measurements. Several experiments reported deviations between simulated and recorded muon densities in extensive air showers, while others reported no discrepancies. We combine data from eight leading air shower experiments to cover shower energies from PeV to tens of EeV. Data are combined using the z-scale, a unified reference scale based on simulated air showers. Energy-scales of experiments are cross-calibrated. Above 10 PeV, we find a muon deficit in simulated air showers for each of the six considered hadronic interaction models. The deficit is increasing with shower energy. For the models EPOS-LHC and QGSJet-II.04, the slope is found significant at 8 sigma.

Minimal matrix representations of five-dimensional Lie algebras

We obtain minimal dimension matrix representations for each indecomposable five-dimensional Lie algebra over $\R$ and justify in each case that they are minimal. In each case a matrix Lie group is given whose matrix Lie algebra provides the required representation.

Hadronic decay of a scalar B meson from the lattice

We explore the transitions B$(0^+)$ to B $π$ and B$_s(0^+)$ to B K from lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ flavours of sea quark, using the static approximation for the heavy quark. We evaluate the effective coupling constants, predicting a B$(0^+)$ to B $π$ width of around 160 MeV. Our result for the coupling strength adds to the evidence that the B$_s(0^+)$ meson is not predominantly a molecular state (BK).

Excited B mesons from the lattice

We determine the energies of the excited states of a heavy-light meson $Q\bar{q}$, with a static heavy quark and light quark with mass approximately that of the strange quark from both quenched lattices and with dynamical fermions. We are able to explore the energies of orbital excitations up to L=3, the spin-orbit splitting up to L=2 and the first radial excitation. These $b \bar{s}$ mesons will be very narrow if their mass is less than 5775 MeV -- the $BK$ threshold. We investigate this in detail and present evidence that the scalar meson (L=1) will be very narrow and that as many as 6 $b \bar{s}$ excited states will have energies close to the $BK$ threshold and should also be relatively narrow.

Bound States of Type I D-Strings

We study the infra-red limit of the O(N) gauge theory that describes the low energy modes of a system of $N$ type I D-strings and provide some support to the conjecture that, in this limit, the theory flows to an orbifold conformal theory. We compute the elliptic genus of the orbifold theory and argue that its longest string sector describes the bound states of D-strings. We show that, as a result, the masses and multiplicities of the bound states are in agreement with the predictions of heterotic-type I duality in 9 dimensions, for all the BPS charges in the lattice $Γ_{(1,17)}$.

An Introduction to the Heavy Quark Effective Theory

These lecture notes begin with a brief survey of the physics of heavy quark systems. This discusion motivates the introduction of the Heavy Quark Effective theory (HQET) which captures a great deal of the intuition developed. A derivation of the HQET from QCD is presented as well as an analysis of its special properties. The effective theory can be seen to amount to a one-dimensional field theory in the quark sector. The heavy quark flavour- and spin- symmetry of the effective lagrangian is an offspring of this. Other topics covered include the question of covariance of the theory, the construction of interpolating fields for the heavy hadron states, the application of LSZ reduction theorems to determine the (reduced) number of form factors in flavour changing transitions, a complete verification of Luke's theorem, plus the matching conditions between QCD and the HQET beyond tree level. These are an expanded version of lectures presented during the Trieste 1994 Summer school on High Energy physics.

Heavy Quark Effective Theory, Interpolating Fields and Bethe-Salpeter Amplitudes

We use the LSZ reduction theorem and interpolating fields, alongwith the heavy quark effective theory, to investigate the structure of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude for heavy hadrons. We show how a simple form of this amplitude, used extensively in heavy hadron decay calculations, follows naturally upto $O(1/M)$ from these field theoretic considerations.

Hadrons of Arbitrary Spin and Heavy Quark Symmetry

We present a general construction of the spin content of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes (covariant wave functions) for heavy hadrons with arbitrary orbital excitations, using representations of the Lorentz group. These wave functions incorporate the symmetries manifest in the heavy quark limit. In the baryonic sector we clearly differentiate between the $Λ$ and $Σ$ type excited baryons. We then use the trace formalism to evaluate the weak transitions of ground state heavy hadrons to arbitrary excited heavy hadrons. The contributions of excited states to the Bjorken sum rule are also worked out in detail.

Derivation of the Verlinde Formula from Chern-Simons Theory and the G/G model

We give a derivation of the Verlinde formula for the $G_{k}$ WZW model from Chern-Simons theory, without taking recourse to CFT, by calculating explicitly the partition function $Z_{Σ\times S^{1}}$ of $Σ\times S^{1}$ with an arbitrary number of labelled punctures. By a suitable gauge choice, $Z_{Σ\times S^{1}}$ is reduced to the partition function of an Abelian topological field theory on $Σ$ (a deformation of non-Abelian BF and Yang-Mills theory) whose evaluation is straightforward. This relates the Verlinde formula to the Ray-Singer torsion of $Σ\times S^{1}$. We derive the $G_{k}/G_{k}$ model from Chern-Simons theory, proving their equivalence, and give an alternative derivation of the Verlinde formula by calculating the $G_{k}/G_{k}$ path integral via a functional version of the Weyl integral formula. From this point of view the Verlinde formula arises from the corresponding Jacobian, the Weyl determinant. Also, a novel derivation of the shift $k\ra k+h$ is given, based on the index of the twisted Dolbeault complex.
