Yanson point-contact spectroscopy of Weyl semimetal WTe2

We carried out point contact (PC) investigation of WTe2 single crystals. We measured Yanson d2V/dI2 PC spectra of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in WTe2. The spectra demonstrate a main phonon peak around 8 meV and a shallow second maximum near 16 meV. Their position is in line with the calculation of the EPI spectra of WTe2 in the literature, albeit phonons with higher energy are not resolved in our PC spectra. An additional contribution to the spectra is present above the phonon energy, what may be connected with the peculiar electronic band structure and need to be clarified. We detected tiny superconducting features in d2V/dI2 close to zero bias, which broadens by increasing temperature and blurs above 6K. Thus, (surface) superconductivity may exist in WTe2 with a topologically nontrivial state. We found a broad maximum in dV/dI at large voltages (>200 mV) indicating change of conductivity from metallic to semiconducting type. The latter might be induced by the high current density (~10^8 A/cm^2) in the PC and/or local heating, thus enabling the manipulation of the quantum electronic states at the interface in the PC core.

Surface superconductivity in the Weyl semimetal MoTe2 detected by point contact spectroscopy

MoTe2 is a Weyl semimetal, which exhibits unique non-saturating magnetoresistance and strongly reinforced superconductivity under pressure. Here, we demonstrate that a novel mesoscopic superconductivity at ambient pressure arises on the surface of MoTe2 with a critical temperature up to 5 K significantly exceeding the bulk Tc=0.1K. We measured the derivatives of I-V curves for metallic hetero-contacts of MoTe2 with Ag or Cu, homo-contacts of MoTe2 as well as "soft" point contacts (PCs). Large number of these hetero-contacts exhibit a dV/dI dependence, which is characteristic for Andreev reflection. It allows to determine the superconducting gap \Delta. The average gap values are 2\Delta=1.30+/-0.15 meV with a 2\Delta/kBTc ratio of 3.7+/-0.4, which slightly exceeds the standard BCS value of 3.52. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the gap follows a BCS-like behavior, which points to a nodeless superconducting order parameter with some strong-coupling renormalization. Remarkably, the observation of a "gapless-like" single minimum in the dV/dI of "soft" PCs may indicate a topological superconducting state of the MoTe2 surface as these contacts probe mainly the interface and avoid additional pressure effect. Therefore, MoTe2 might be a suitable material to study new forms of topological superconductivity.

The superconducting gaps in FeSe studied by soft point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy

FeSe single crystals have been studied by soft point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy. Superconducting gap features in the differential resistance dV/dI(V) of point contacts such as a characteristic Andreev-reflection double-minimum structure have been measured versus temperature and magnetic field. Analyzing dV/dI within the extended two-gap Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model allows to extract both the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the superconducting gaps. The temperature dependence of both gaps is close to the standard BCS behavior. Remarkably, the magnitude of the double-minimum structure gradually vanishes in magnetic field, while the minima position only slightly shifts with field indicating a weak decrease of the superconducting gaps. Analyzing the dV/dI(V) spectra for 25 point contacts results in the averaged gap values = 1.8+/-0.4meV and =1.0+/-0.2 meV and reduced values 2 /kTc=4.2+/-0.9 and 2 /kTc=2.3+/-0.5 for the large (L) and small (S) gap, respectively. Additionally, the small gap contribution was found to be within tens of percent decreasing with both temperature and magnetic field. No signatures in the dV/dI spectra were observed testifying a gapless superconductivity or presence of even smaller gaps.

Field-induced gapless electron pocket in the superconducting vortex phase of YNi2B2C as probed by magnetoacoustic quantum oscillations

By use of ultrasound studies we resolved magneto-acoustic quantum oscillation deep into the mixed state of the multiband nonmagnetic superconductor YNi2B2C. Below the upper critical field, only a very weak additional damping appears that can be well explained by the field inhomogeneity caused by the flux-line lattice in the mixed state. This is clear evidence for no or a vanishingly small gap for one of the bands, namely, the spheroidal alpha band. This contrasts de Haas--van Alphen data obtained by use of torque magnetometry for the same sample, with a rapidly vanishing oscillation signal in the mixed state. This points to a strongly distorted flux-line lattice in the latter case that, in general, can hamper a reliable extraction of gap parameters by use of such techniques.

Doubling of the critical temperature of FeSe observed in point contacts

Rise in superconducting critical temperature Tc more than two times (exceeding 20 K) is discov- ered in point-contacts created between iron-chalcogenide FeSe single crystal and Cu. The possible reasons of such Tc increase in point-contacts are discussed. The most probable cause for this may be the interfacial carriers doping and/or interfacial enhanced electron-phonon interaction.

Coexistence of superconductivity and itinerant ferromagnetism in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex (x = 0.5 and 1.0), the first non-U material with Tc < TFM

We have carried out detailed magnetic and transport studies of the new Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex (x = 0.5, 1) superconductors derived by doping Se in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2. Se-doping produces several effects: it suppresses semiconducting like behavior observed in the undoped Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2, ferromagnetic ordering temperature, TFM, decreases considerably from 7.5 K (in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2) to 3.5 K and superconducting transition temperature, Tc, gets enhanced slightly to 2.9 - 3.3 K. Thus in these Se-doped materials, TFM is just marginally higher than Tc. Magnetization studies provide an evidence of bulk superconductivity in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex. Quite remarkably, as compared with the effective paramagnetic Ce-moment (~ 2.2 muB), the ferromagnetically ordered Ce-moment in the superconducting state is rather small (~ 0.1 muB). To the best of our knowledge, the title compounds are the first Ce-based superconducting itinerant ferromagnetic materials (Tc < TFM). We stress that Ce-4f electrons are responsible for both superconductivity and ferromagnetism just as U-5f electrons are in UCoGe. Furthermore, a novel feature of these materials is a dual hysteresis loop corresponding to both the ferromagnetism and the coexisting superconductivity. Such features of Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex put these materials apart from the well known U-containing superconducting ferromagnets reported so far.

Analysis of nonlinear conductivity of point contacts on the base of FeSe in the normal and superconducting state

Nonlinear conductivity of point contacts (PCs) on the base of FeSe single crystals has been investigated. Measured dV/dI dependencies demonstrate the prevailing contribution to the PC conductivity caused by the degraded surface. Superconducting (SC) feature in dV/dI like a sharp zero-bias minimum develops for relatively low ohmic PCs, where the deep areas of FeSe are involved. Analysis of dV/dI has shown that the origin of the zero-bias minimum is connected with the Maxwell part of the PC resistance, what masks energy dependent spectral peculiarities. Even so, we have found the specific features in dV/dI - the sharp side maxima, which may have connection to the SC gap, since their position follows the BCS temperature dependence. Exploring the dV/dI spectra of the rare occurrence with Andreev-like structure, the two gaps with Delta = 2.5 and 3.5 meV were identified.

Improvement of the superconducting properties of polycrystalline FeSe by silver addition

We investigated the influence of different Ag additions (up to 10 wt %) on the superconducting properties of FeSe0.94. The structural investigations (XRD and SEM) indicated that Ag is present in three different forms. Ag at grain boundaries supports the excellent intergrain connections and reduces superconducting transition width to values smaller than 1K at B=0 and smaller than 2.74 K at B=14 T. Ag insertion in the crystal lattice unit cell provides additional carriers and changes the electron hole imbalance in FeSe0.94. This results in an increase in the magnetoresistive effect (MR) and critical temperature (Tc). Reacted Ag forms a small amount (~1%) of Ag2Se impurity phase, which may increase the pinning energy in comparison with that of the undoped sample. The enhanced upper critical field (Bc2) is also a result of the increased impurity scattering. Thus, unlike cuprates Ag addition enhances the Tc, Bc2, pinning energy and MR making the properties of polycrystalline FeSe0.94 similar to those of single crystals.

Single 20meV boson mode in KFe2As2 detected by point-contact spectroscopy

We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the electron-boson interaction in KFe2As2 by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy, model, and ab-initio LDA-based calculations for the standard electron-phonon Eliashberg function. The PC spectrum viz. the second derivative of the I - V characteristic of representative PC exhibits a pronounced maximum at about 20meV and surprisingly a featureless behavior at lower and higher energies. We discuss phonon and non-phonon (excitonic) mechanisms for the origin of this peak. Analysis of the underlying source of this peak may be important for the understanding of serious puzzles of superconductivity in this type of compounds.

Transport and pinning properties of Ag-doped FeSe0.94

We investigated the superconducting transition and the pinning properties of undoped and Ag-doped FeSe0.94 at magnetic fields up to 14 T. It was established that due to Ag addition the hexagonal phase formation in melted FeSe0.94 samples is suppressed and the grain connectivity is strongly improved. The obtained superconducting zero-field transition becomes sharp (with a transition width below 1 K), Tc and the upper critical field were found to increase, whereas the normal state resistivity significantly reduces becoming comparable with those of FeSe single crystals. In addition, a considerable magnetoresistance was observed due to Ag doping. The resistive transition of undoped and Ag-doped FeSe0.94 is dominated by thermally activated flux flow. From the activation energy U vs H dependence, a crossover from single-vortex pinning to a collective creep pinning behavior was found with increasing the magnetic field.

Exploring of point-contact spectra of Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 in the normal and superconducting state

We present study of derivatives of current-voltage I(V) characteristics of point-contacts (PCs) based on Ba{1-x}Na{x}Fe2As2 (x=0.25) in the normal and superconducting state. The detailed analysis of dV/dI(V) data (also given in Appendix A) shows that the thermal regime, when temperature increases with a voltage at a rate of about 1.8 K/mV, is realized in the investigated PCs at least at high biases V above the superconducting (SC) gap \Delta. In this case, specific resistivity \rho (T) in PC core is responsible for a peculiar dV/dI(V) behavior, while a pronounced asymmetry of dV/dI(V) is caused by large value of thermopower in this material. A reproducible zero-bias minima detected on dV/dI(V) at low biases in the range \pm(6--9)mV well below the SC critical temperature T_c could be connected with the manifestation of the SC gap \Delta. Evaluation of these Andreev-reflection-like structures on dV/dI(V) points out to the preferred value of 2\Delta/kT_c \approx 6. The expected second gap features on dV/dI(V) are hard to resolve unambiguously, likely due to impurity scattering, spatial inhomogeneity and transition to the mentioned thermal regime as the bias further increases. Suggestions are made how to separate spectroscopic features in dV/dI(V) from those caused by the thermal regime.

The effect of Ag addition on the superconducting properties of the FeSe system

The tetragonal FeSe phase is an intensively investigated iron based superconductor. In this study we examined the influence of Ag addition on the superconducting properties of selenium deficient polycrystalline FeSe0.94. The samples were obtained by solid state reaction and melting methods. XRD analysis shows the presence of tetragonal phase and EDX analysis establishes inhomogeneous Ag distribution in the grains. The superconducting properties were investigated by fundamental and third harmonic AC magnetic susceptibility. The intergranular critical current determined from AC magnetic susceptibility in the Ag doped sample is several times higher than that in the undoped one, obtained by melting at approximately the same temperatures. Intra-granular current is field independent up to almost 1000 Oe. Using the temperature dependence of third harmonic AC magnetic susceptibility at different DC magnetic fields, the irreversibility lines were obtained for all samples. It is found that Ag addition increased the irreversibility field in comparison with undoped melted and powder sintered samples. All results show that the Ag addition in selenium deficient (FeSe0.94) samples leads to improvement of inter- and intra- granular properties: screening ability, pinning, activation energy and critical current and improves the irreversibility line.

Ginzburg-Landau analysis of the critical temperature and the upper critical field for three-band superconductors

Using the microscopic formalism of Eilenberger equations, a three-band Ginzburg-Landau theory for the intraband dirty limit and clean interband scattering case is derived. Within the framework of this three-band Ginzburg-Landau theory, expressions for the critical temperature Tc and the temperature dependence of the upper critical field H_c2 are obtained. Based on some special cases of the matrix of interaction constants, we demonstrate the influence of the sign of the interband interaction on the critical temperature and the upper critical field as compared with a two-band superconductor where it plays no role. We study also analytically and numerically the effect of its magnitude.

Disordered magnetism in superconducting KFe2As2 single crystals

High-quality KFe2As2 (K122) single crystals synthesized by different techniques have been studied by magnetization and specific heat (SH) measurements. There are 2 types of samples both affected by disordered magnetic phases: (i) cluster-glass (CG) like or (ii) Griffiths phase (G) like. For (i) at low applied magnetic fields the T-dependence of the zero field cooled (ZFC) linear susceptibility (chi_l) exhibits an anomaly with an irreversible behavior in ZFC and field cooled (FC) data. This anomaly is related to the freezing temperature T_f. The extrapolated T_f to B=0 varies between 50 K and 90 K. Below T_f we observed a magnetic hysteresis in the field dependence of the isothermal magnetization (M(B)). The frequency shift of the freezing temperature delta T_f=Delta T_f/[T_f\Delta(\ln \nu)]\sim 0.05$ has an intermediate value, which provides evidence for the formation of a CG-like state in the K122 samples of type (i). The frequency dependence of their T_f follows a conventional power-law divergence of critical slowing down: tau=tau_0 [T_f(nu)/T_f(0)-1]^{-z\nu^{'}} with the critical exponent z\nu^{'}=10(2) and a relatively long characteristic time constant tau_0 =6.9 x10^{-11}$s also supporting a CG behavior. The large value of the Sommerfeld coefficient was related to magnetic contribution from a CG. Samples from (ii) did not show a hysteresis behavior for chi_l(T) and M(B). Below a crossover temperature T^* sim 40 K a power-law dependence in the chi_l propto T^[lambda_G-1}], with a non-universal lambda_G was observed, suggesting a quantum G-like behavior. In this case chi_l and M(B) can be scaled using the scaling function M_s(T,B)= B^{1-\lambda_{\tiny G}}Y(mu B/k_BT) with the scaling moment mu of the order of 3.5mu_b. The same non-universal exponent was found also in SH measurements, where the magnetic contribution C/T propto T^(lambda_G-1).

KFe2As2: coexistence of superconductivity and local moment derived spin-glass

High-quality KFe2As2 single crystals have been studied by transport, magnetization and low-T specific heat measurements. Their analysis shows that superconductivity occurs (in some cases coexists) in the vicinity of disordered magnetic phases (Griffiths and spin-glass type) depending of the amount of local magnetic moments (probably excess Fe derived)and sample inhomogeneity. The achieved phenomenological description of our data including also data from the literature provides a consistent explanation of the observed non-Fermi-liquid behavior and of the nominally large experimental Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n about 94 mJ/mol K^2. We suggest that the intrinsic value (directly related to the itinerant quasi-particles) gamma_el about 60(10)mJ/mol K^2 is significantly reduced compared with gamma_n. Then an enhanced relative jump of the electronic specific heat Delta C_el/gamma_el T_c about 0.8 and a weak total electron-boson coupling constant lambda less or about 1 follow.

Peculiarities of the superconducting gaps and the electron-boson interaction in TmNi2B2C as seen by point-contact spectroscopy

Point-contact (PC) investigations on the title compound in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (Tc=10,6 K) are presented. The temperature dependence of the SC gap of TmNi2B2C determined from Andreev-reflection (AR) spectra using the standard single-gap approximation (SGA) deviates from the BCS behavior in displaying a maximum at about Tc/2. A refined analysis within the two-gap approximation provides evidence for the presence of a second gap twice as large as the main gap (the first one), while the latter is close to that within the SGA. This way, TmNi2B2C expands the number of nickel borocarbide superconductors which exhibit a clear multiband character. Additionally, for the first time "reentrant" features were found in the AR spectra for some PCs measured in a magnetic field. The PC spectroscopy of the electron-boson interaction in TmNi2B2C in the normal state reveals a pronounced phonon maximum at 9.5meV and a more smeared one around 15 meV, while at higher energies the PC spectra are almost featureless. Additionally, the most intense peak slightly above 3meV observed in the PC spectra of TmNi2B2C is presumably caused by crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations. The peak near 1meV detected for some PC spectra is connected with a modification of the CEF probably due to boron or carbon vacancies, allowing to probe the local stoichiometry by PC spectroscopy.

Point-contact study of ReFeAs(1-x)Fx (Re=La, Sm) superconducting films

Point-contact (PC) Andreev-reflection (AR) measurements of the superconducting gap in iron-oxipnictide ReFeAsO_{1-x}F_x (Re=La, Sm) films have been carried out. The value of the gap is distributed in the range 2\Delta \simeq 5-10 meV (for Re=Sm) with a maximum in the distribution around 6 meV. Temperature dependence of the gap \Delta(T) can be fitted well by BCS curve giving reduced gap ratio 2\Delta /kT_c^*\simeq 3.5 (here T_c^* is the critical temperature from the BCS fit). At the same time, an expected second larger gap feature was difficult to resolve distinctly on the AR spectra making determination reliability of the second gap detection questionable. Possible reasons for this and the origin of other features like clear-cut asymmetry in the AR spectra and current regime in PCs are discussed.

Point-contact study of the LuNi2B2C borocarbide superconducting film

We present point-contact (PC) Andreev-reflection measurements of a superconducting epitaxial c-axis oriented nickel borocarbide film LuNi2B2C (Tc=15.9 K). The averaged value of the superconducting gap is found to be 2.6 +/-0.2 meV in the one-gap approach, whereas the two-gap approach results in 2.14+/-0.36 meV and 3.0+/-0.27 meV. The better fit of the Andreev-reflection spectra for the LuNi2B2C - Cu PC obtained by the two-gap approach provides evidence for multiband superconductivity in LuNi2B2C. For the first time, PC electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectra have been measured for this compound. They demonstrate pronounced phonon maximum at 8.5+/-0.4meV and a second shallow one at 15.8+/-0.6 meV. The electron-phonon coupling constant estimated from the PC EPI spectra turned out to be small (~ 0.1), like in other superconducting rare-earth nickel borocarbides. Possible reasons for this are discussed.
