Electron identification and hadron discrimination using Cherenkov radiation in air and SiPMs

This paper presents a method to identify electrons using the Cherenkov light emitted when a charged particle travels in air and photons are detected with a Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM). The analysis is based on a photon-counting approach using SPAD cells and uses data collected during a test beam at CERN PS. The results are well described by a simple Monte Carlo simulation, which further demonstrates that a very good electron identification and a strong pion/hadron rejection could be obtained over a wide momentum range.

Measurements of efficiency, timing and response to irradiation for direct detection of charged particles with SiPMs

In this paper the efficiency of direct charged particle detection with different Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) sensors has been measured to be close to 100%. Time resolution of about 20 ps has also been confirmed for sensors with an active area of around 3x3 mm$^\text{2}$ and a single-cell area of 40 $\mu$m$^\text{2}$. In addition, the SiPM performance after irradiation, in terms of timing response and dark count rate, has been evaluated for sensors with a 1x1 mm$^\text{2}$ area, demonstrating that SiPMs can maintain excellent timing capabilities and a low dark count rate when an appropriate threshold is applied to the signal.

An LQ problem for the heat equation on the halfline with Dirichlet boundary control and noise

We study a linear quadratic problem for a system governed by the heat equation on a halfline with Dirichlet boundary control and Dirichlet boundary noise. We show that this problem can be reformulated as a stochastic evolution equation in a certain weighted L2 space. An appropriate choice of weight allows us to prove a stronger regularity for the boundary terms appearing in the infinite dimensional state equation. The direct solution of the Riccati equation related to the associated non-stochastic problem is used to find the solution of the problem in feedback form and to write the value function of the problem.

An Hilbert space approach for a class of arbitrage free implied volatilities models

We present an Hilbert space formulation for a set of implied volatility models introduced in \cite{BraceGoldys01} in which the authors studied conditions for a family of European call options, varying the maturing time and the strike price $T$ an $K$, to be arbitrage free. The arbitrage free conditions give a system of stochastic PDEs for the evolution of the implied volatility surface ${\hatσ}_t(T,K)$. We will focus on the family obtained fixing a strike $K$ and varying $T$. In order to give conditions to prove an existence-and-uniqueness result for the solution of the system it is here expressed in terms of the square root of the forward implied volatility and rewritten in an Hilbert space setting. The existence and the uniqueness for the (arbitrage free) evolution of the forward implied volatility, and then of the the implied volatility, among a class of models, are proved. Specific examples are also given.

Verification theorem and construction of $ε$-optimal controls for control of abstract evolution equations

We study several aspects of the dynamic programming approach to optimal control of abstract evolution equations, including a class of semilinear partial differential equations. We introduce and prove a verification theorem which provides a sufficient condition for optimality. Moreover we prove sub- and superoptimality principles of dynamic programming and give an explicit construction of $ε$-optimal controls.

Fragmentation path of excited nuclear systems

We perform a study of the fragmentation path of excited nuclear sources, within the framework of a stochastic mean-field approach. We consider the reaction $^{129}$Xe + $^{119}$Sn at two beam energies: 32 and 50 MeV/A, for central collisions. It is observed that, after the compression phase the system expands towards a dilute configuration from which it may recontract or evolve into a bubble-like structure. Then fragments are formed through the development of volume and/or surface instabilities. The two possibilities co-exist at 32 MeV/A, leading to quite different fragment partitions, while at 50 MeV/A the hollow configuration is observed in all events. Large variances are recovered in a way fully consistent with the presence of spinodal decomposition remnants. Kinematical properties of fragments are discussed and suggested as observables very sensitive to the dominant fragment production mechanism. A larger radial collective flow is observed at 50 MeV/A, in agreement with experiments.

Spinodal decomposition of expanding nuclear matter and multifragmentation

Density fluctuations of expanding nuclear matter are studied within a mean-field model in which fluctuations are generated by an external stochastic field. Fluctuations develop about a mean one-body phase-space density corresponding to a hydrodinamic motion that describes a slow expansion of the system. A fluctuation-dissipation relation suitable for a uniformly expanding medium is obtained and used to constrain the strength of the stochastic field. The distribution of the liquid domains in the spinodal decomposition is derived. Comparison of the related distribution of the fragment size with experimental data on the nuclear multifragmentation is quite satisfactory.

Instabilities in a Mean-field dynamics of Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

We discuss the features of instabilities in asymmetric nuclear matter, in particular the relation between the nature of fluctuations, the types of instabilities and the properties of the interaction. We show a chemical instability appears as an instability against isoscalar-like fluctuations. Then starting from phenomenological hadronic field theory (QHD), including exchange terms, we discuss the symmetry energy and the relation to the dynamical response inside the spinodal region.

Asymmetric nuclear matter in a Hartree-Fock approach to non-linear QHD

The Equation of State (EOS) for asymmetric nuclear matter is discussed starting from a phenomenological hadronic field theory of Serot-Walecka type including exchange terms. In a model with self interactions of the scalar sigma-meson we show that the Fock terms naturally lead to isospin effects in the nuclear EOS. These effects are quite large and dominate over the contribution due to isovector mesons. We obtain a potential symmetry term of "stiff" type, i.e. increasing with baryon density and an interesting behaviour of neutron/proton effective masses of relevance for transport properties of asymmetric dense matter.

Fock exchange terms in non-linear Quantum Hadrodynamics

We propose a method to introduce Fock term contributions in relativistic models of fermions coupled to mesons, including self-interactions for the mesonic fields. We show that effects on equilibrium properties and on the dynamical response of the fermionic system can be consistently accounted for. Some implications on equilibrium properties of asymmetric nuclear matter are discussed.

Dynamics of dissipative binary collisions

In this paper we discuss the reaction mechanisms that occur in the overlap zone for semi-peripheral heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies. In particular we focus on the development of neck instabilities, that could determine a possible increase of dynamical fluctuations. As observed in recent experimental data, at beam energies just above 10 MeV/A the most relevant expected consequence is the possibility to obtain large variances in the projectile-like and target-like observables. With increasing beam energy we pass to a mid-rapidity fragment production. In this way we predict a smooth transition from a deep-inelastic to a fragmentation reaction mechanism.

Coulomb effects on growth of instabilities in asymmetric nuclear matter

We study the effects of the Coulomb interaction on the growth of unstable modes in asymmetric nuclear matter. In order to compare with previous calculations we use a semiclassical approach based on the linearized Vlasov equation. Moreover, a quantum calculation is performed within the R.P.A.. The Coulomb effects are a slowing down of the growth and the occurrence of a minimal wave vector for the onset of the instabilities. The quantum corrections cause a further decrease of the growth rates.

Relativistic Approach to Superfluidity in Nuclear Matter

Pairing correlations in symmetric nuclear matter are studied within a relativistic mean-field approximation based on a field theory of nucleons coupled to neutral ($σ$ and $ω$) and to charged ($\varrho$) mesons. The Hartree-Fock and the pairing fields are calculated in a self-consistent way. The energy gap is the result of a strong cancellation between the scalar and vector components of the pairing field. We find that the pair amplitude vanishes beyond a certain value of momentum of the paired nucleons. This fact determines an effective cutoff in the gap equation. The value of this cutoff gives an energy gap in agreement with the estimates of non relativistic calculations.
