A novel entropy recurrence quantification analysis

The growing study of time series, especially those related to nonlinear systems, has challenged the methodologies to characterize and classify dynamical structures of a signal. Here we conceive a new diagnostic tool for time series based on the concept of information entropy, in which the probabilities are associated to microstates defined from the recurrence phase space. Recurrence properties can properly be studied using recurrence plots, a methodology based on binary matrices where trajec- tories in phase space of dynamical systems are evaluated against other embedded trajectory. Our novel entropy methodology has several advantages compared to the traditional recurrence entropy defined in the literature, namely, the correct evaluation of the chaoticity level of the signal, the weak dependence on parameters, correct evaluation of periodic time series properties and more sensitivity to noise level of time series. Furthermore, the new entropy quantifier developed in this manuscript also fixes inconsistent results of the traditional recurrence entropy concept, reproducing classical results with novel insights.

The infinite partition of a line segment and multifractal objects

We report an algorithm for the partition of a line segment according to a given ratio $ν$. At each step the length distribution among sets of the partition follows a binomial distribution. We call $k$-set to the set of elements with the same length at the step $n$. The total number of elements is $2^n$ and the number of elements in a same $k$-set is $C_n^k$. In the limit of an infinite partion this object become a multifractal where each $k$-set originate a fractal. We find the fractal spectrum $D_k$ and calculate where is its maximum. Finally we find the values of $D_k$ for the limits $k/n \to 0$ and 1.

A Fractal Space-filling Complex Network

We study in this work the properties of the $Q_{mf}$ network which is constructed from an anisotropic partition of the square, the multifractal tiling. This tiling is build using a single parameter $ρ$, in the limit of $ρ\to 1$ the tiling degenerates into the square lattice that is associated with a regular network. The $Q_{mf}$ network is a space-filling network with the following characteristics: it shows a power-law distribution of connectivity for $k>7$ and it has an high clustering coefficient when compared with a random network associated. In addition the $Q_{mf}$ network satisfy the relation $N \propto \ell^{d_f}$ where $\ell$ is a typical length of the network (the average minimal distance) and $N$ the network size. We call $d_f$ the fractal dimension of the network. In tne limit case $ρ\to 1$ we have $d_{f} \to 2$.

A Random Multifractal Tilling

We develop a multifractal random tilling that fills the square. The multifractal is formed by an arrangement of rectangular blocks of different sizes, areas and number of neighbors. The overall feature of the tilling is an heterogeneous and anisotropic random self-affine object. The multifractal is constructed by an algorithm that makes successive sections of the square. At each $n$-step there is a random choice of a parameter $\rho_i$ related to the section ratio. For the case of random choice between $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$ we find analytically the full spectrum of fractal dimensions.

Varying critical percolation exponents on a multifractal support

We study percolation as a critical phenomenon on a multifractal support. The scaling exponents of the the infinite cluster size ($β$ exponent) and the fractal dimension of the percolation cluster ($d_f$) are quantities that seem do not depend on local anisotropies. These two quantities have the same value as in the standard percolation in regular bidimensional lattices. On the other side, the scaling of the correlation length ($ν$ exponent) unfolds new universality classes due to the local anisotropy of the critical percolation cluster. We use two critical exponents $ν$ according to the percolation criterion for crossing the lattice in either direction or in both directions. Moreover $ν$ is related to a parameter that characterizes the stretching of the blocks forming the tilling of the multifractal.

Anisotropy and percolation threshold in a multifractal support

Recently a multifractal object, $Q_{mf}$, was proposed to study percolation properties in a multifractal support. The area and the number of neighbors of the blocks of $Q_{mf}$ show a non-trivial behavior. The value of the probability of occupation at the percolation threshold, $p_{c}$, is a function of $\rho$, a parameter of $Q_{mf}$ which is related to its anisotropy. We investigate the relation between $p_{c}$ and the average number of neighbors of the blocks as well as the anisotropy of $Q_{mf}$.

Percolation in a Multifractal

We build a multifractal object and use it as a support to study percolation. We identify some differences between percolation in a multifractal and in a regular lattice. We use many samples of finite size lattices and draw the histogram of percolating lattices against site occupation probability. Depending on a parameter characterizing the multifractal and the lattice size, the histogram can have two peaks. The percolation threshold for the multifractal is lower than for the square lattice. The percolation in the multifractal differs from the percolation in the regular lattice in two points. The first is related with the coordination number that changes along the multifractal. The second comes from the way the weight of each cell in the multifractal affects the percolation cluster. We compute the fractal dimension of the percolating cluster. Despite the differences, the percolation in a multifractal support is in the universality class of standard percolation.

Mechanical Mixing in Nonlinear Nanomechanical Resonators

Nanomechanical resonators, machined out of Silicon-on-Insulator wafers, are operated in the nonlinear regime to investigate higher-order mechanical mixing at radio frequencies, relevant to signal processing and nonlinear dynamics on nanometer scales. Driven by two neighboring frequencies the resonators generate rich power spectra exhibiting a multitude of satellite peaks. This nonlinear response is studied and compared to $n^{th}$-order perturbation theory and nonperturbative numerical calculations.

Separatrix Reconnections in Chaotic Regimes

In this paper we extend the concept of separatrix reconnection into chaotic regimes. We show that even under chaotic conditions one can still understand abrupt jumps of diffusive-like processes in the relevant phase-space in terms of relatively smooth realignments of stable and unstable manifolds of unstable fixed points.
