Multiple Parton Interactions, inclusive and exclusive cross sections, sum rules

In a simplified model of Multiple Parton Interactions the inclusive cross sections, of processes with large momentum transfer exchange, acquire the statistical meaning of factorial moments of the distribution in multiplicity of interactions, while more exclusive cross sections, which can provide complementary information on the interaction dynamics, become experimentally viable. Inclusive and exclusive cross sections are linked by sum rules, which can be tested experimentally.

A Theory-independent Way of Unambiguous Detection of Wino-like particles at LHC

We propose to use the change of the energy lost by ionization, measured by silicon detectors, before and after the passage through a bulk of dense matter, for unambiguously detecting highly massive single-charged particles, which could be produced at LHC, in particular Winos with mass in the TeV range, whose c-tau is expected to be some cms long, although the method is also efficient for masses down to 10GeV. For convenience, a QED derivation of the modern version of the Bethe-Block formula is also provided.

Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC

We review the recent progress in the theoretical description and experimental observation of multiple parton interactions. Subjects covered include experimental measurements of minimum bias interactions and of the underlying event, models of soft physics implemented in Monte Carlo generators, developments in the theoretical description of multiple parton interactions and phenomenological studies of double parton scattering. This article stems from contributions presented at the Helmholtz Alliance workshop on "Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC", DESY Hamburg, 13-15 September 2010.

Incoherence and Multiple Parton Interactions

At the LHC Multiple Parton Interactions will represent an important feature of the minimum bias and of the underlying event and will give important contributions in many channels of interest for the search of new physics. Different numbers of multiple collision may contribute to the production of a given final state and one should expect important interference effects in the regime where different contributions have similar rates. We show, on the contrary, that, once multiple parton interactions are identified by their different topologies, terms with different numbers of multiple parton interactions do not interfere in the final cross section.

Multi-parton correlations and "exclusive" cross sections

In addition to the inclusive cross sections discussed within the QCD-parton model, in the regime of multiple parton interactions, different and more exclusive cross sections become experimentally viable and may be suitably measured. Indeed, in its study of double parton collisions, the quantity measured by CDF was an "exclusive" rather than an inclusive cross section. The non perturbative input to the "exclusive" cross sections is different with respect to the non perturbative input of the inclusive cross sections and involves correlation terms of the hadron structure already at the level of single parton collisions. The matter is discussed in details keeping explicitly into account the effects of double and of triple parton collisions.

Role of the gluons in the color screening in a QCD plasma

The color screening in a QCD plasma, that was studied in a formulation making evident similarities and differences with the electric case, is continued by taking into account the contributions of real gluons. The results, which include a numerical analysis not previously performed, show a damping of the correlation function which, if not exponential, does not differ very much from that form. The role of the temperature, which affect both the population and the dynamics of the quark-gluon system, is found to be relevant.

Hard Inelastic Interactions at Parton and Hadron Level

In the study of multiple scattering of partons in hadron-hadron collisions the possibility of a hard inelastic process at the parton level is included in its simplest possible way, $i.e.$ including the $2 \to 3$ transition. The specific physical process to which the treatment is applied is the inelastic collision of a nucleon with a heavy nucleus

A Hamiltonian Model for Hard Inelastic Hadronic Collisions

Hamiltonian eikonal model for multiple production in high energy hadron-hadron collisions is presented and worked out with the aim of providing a simple frame for various different observables. An important role is played by unitarity which is built in by construction in the Hamiltonian formulation. The eikonal approximation allows both a very effective simplification of the dynamics, and facilitates the discussion on the relevance of possible spatial inhomogeneities of the hadrons. The model is intended to describe only the hard interaction of the constituents, the structure of the incoming hadrons and the final hadronization processes are outside the scope of the present investigation.

Proton Structure in Transverse Space and the Effective Cross Section

The observation of double parton collisions by CDF has provided the first direct information on the structure of the proton in transverse space. The actual quantity which has been measured is the `effective cross section' $σ_{eff}$, which is related to the transverse size of the region where hard interactions are localized. The actual value which has been measured is sizably smaller than naively expected and it is an indication of important correlation effects in the many-body parton distribution of the proton. We discuss the problem pointing out a possible source of correlations in the proton structure, which could have a significant effect on the value of $σ_{eff}$.

Rapidity Distributions of Jets Produced in Heavy Ion Collisions at LHC

We discuss the rapidity distribution of produced jets in heavy-ion collisions at LHC. The process allows one to determine to a good accuracy the value of the impact parameter of the nuclear collision in each single inelastic event. The knowledge of the geometry is a powerful tool for a detailed analysis of the process, making it possible to test the various different elements which, in accordance with present theoretical ideas, take part to the production mechanism.

Double parton scatterings in high energy hadronic collisions

CDF has recently measured a large number of double parton scatterings. The observed value of $σ_{eff}$, the non perturbative parameter which characterizes the process, is considerably smaller as compared with the naive expectation. The small value of $σ_{eff}$ is likely to be an indication of the importance of the two-body parton correlations in the many-body parton distributions of the proton.

Rapidity gaps in minijets production at Tevatron energies

Multiparton interactions modify the high energy hadronic cross section to produce minijets with a rapidity gap in the distribution of secondaries. At Tevatron energy the correction to the single scattering term is large for transverse momenta smaller than 6 GeV.

Rapidity gaps and production of minijets in high-energy hadronic collisions

High energy hadronic interactions can produce a final state characterized by minijets separated by a large gap in the rapidity distribution of the produced secondary particles. We discuss the process by keeping into account the possibility of having multiple parton collisions in the hadronic interaction. At Tevatron energy the correction to the single scattering term induced by the presence of multiparton interactions is large for transverse momenta smaller than 6 GeV.
