Understanding the magnetism in noncentrosymmetric CeIrGe3: Muon spin relaxation and neutron scattering studies

The magnetic properties of a pressure induced noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrGe$_3$ have been investigated by muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR), powder neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) techniques at ambient pressure. For completeness we have also measured the ac magnetic susceptibility $\chi_{\rm ac}(T)$, dc magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, dc isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ and heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T,H)$ down to 2 K. CeIrGe$_{3}$ is known to exhibit pressure induced superconductivity ($T_{\rm c}\approx 1.5$ K) at a pressure of 20 GPa and antiferromagnetic ordering at 8.7 K, 4.7 K and 0.7 K at ambient pressure. Our $\chi_{\rm ac}(T)$ and $\chi(T)$ data show an additional anomaly near 6.2 K which is also captured in $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data. From $\chi_{\rm ac}(T)$, $\chi(T)$ and $C_{\rm p}(T)$ measurements we infer three antiferromagnetic transitions above 2 K at $T_{\rm N1}= 8.5$ K, $T_{\rm N2}= 6.0$ K and $T_{\rm N3}= 4.6$ K. Our $\mu$SR study also confirms the presence of three transitions through the observation of one frequency for $T_{\rm N2} < T\leq T_{\rm N1}$, two frequencies for $T_{\rm N3} < T\leq T_{\rm N2}$ and three frequencies for $T\leq T_{\rm N3}$ in the oscillatory asymmetry. The ND data reveal an incommensurate nature of the magnetic ordering at $T=7$ K with the propagation vector k = (0,0,0.688(3)), and a commensurate magnetic structure at $T=1.5$ K with the propagation vector locked to the value k = (0,0,2/3) and magnetic moments oriented along the $c$ axis. The commensurate structure couples a macroscopic ferromagnetic component, resulting in a strong dependence of the lock-in transition temperature on external magnetic field. The INS data show two well defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations arising from the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Ce$^{3+}$.

Signatures of spin-glass behavior in the induced magnetic moment system PrRuSi3

We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of a ternary intermetallic compound PrRuSi3 using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and muSR measurements. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data reveal the signatures of spin-glass behavior in PrRuSi3 with a freezing temperature of 9.8 K. At low magnetic fields, we observe two sharp anomalies (at 4.9 and 8.6 K) in magnetic susceptibility data. In contrast, the specific heat data show only a broad Schottky-type anomaly centered around 10 K. However, muSR reveals very low frequency coherent oscillations at 1.8 K with an onset of fast relaxation below 12 K indicating a long range magnetically ordered ground state with very small moment. On the other hand, no magnetic Bragg peaks are observed in low temperature neutron diffraction data at 1.8 K. These two contradictory ground states, spin-glass versus magnetic order, can be explained if the spin-glass behavior in PrRuSi3 is considered due to the dynamic fluctuations of the crystal field levels as has been proposed for spin-glass behavior in PrAu2Si2. Two sharp inelastic excitations near 2.4 meV and 14.7 meV are observed in the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra between 4 K and 50 K. Further, exchange coupling J_ex obtained from the analysis of INS data with CEF model provides evidence for the spontaneously induced magnetic order with a CEF-split singlet (Gamma_t4) ground state. However, the exchange coupling seems to be close to the critical value for the induced moment magnetism, therefore we tend to believe that the dynamic fluctuations between the ground state singlet and excited doublet CEF levels is responsible for spin-glass behavior in PrRuSi3.

Low temperature structural effects in the (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ Bechgaard salts

We present a detailed low-temperature investigation of the statics and dynamics of the anions and methyl groups in the organic conductors (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$AsF$_6$ (TMTSF : tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalene). The 4 K neutron scattering structure refinement of the fully deuterated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-D12 salt allows locating precisely the methyl groups at 4 K. This structure is compared to the one of the fully hydrogenated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-H12 salt previously determined at the same temperature. Surprisingly it is found that deuteration corresponds to the application of a negative pressure of 5 x 10$^2$ MPa to the H12 salt. Accurate measurements of the Bragg intensity show anomalous thermal variations at low temperature both in the deuterated PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ salts. Two different thermal behaviors have been distinguished. Low-Bragg-angle measurements reflect the presence of low-frequency modes at characteristic energies θ$_E$ = 8.3 K and θ$_E$ = 6.7 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and AsF$_6$-D12 salts, respectively. These modes correspond to the low-temperature methyl group motion. Large-Bragg-angle measurements evidence an unexpected structural change around 55 K which probably corresponds to the linkage of the anions to the methyl groups via the formation of F...D-CD2 bonds observed in the 4 K structural refinement. Finally we show that the thermal expansion coefficient of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ is dominated by the librational motion of the PF$_6$ units. We quantitatively analyze the low-temperature variation of the lattice expansion via the contribution of Einstein oscillators, which allows us to determine for the first time the characteristic frequency of the PF6 librations: θ$_E$ = 50 K and θ$_E$ = 76 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and PF$_6$-H12 salts, respectively.

Temperature-dependent multi-k magnetic structure in multiferroic Co3TeO6

A complex magnetic order of the multiferroic compound Co3TeO6 has been revealed by neutron powder diffraction studies on ceramics and crushed single crystals. The compound adopts a monoclinic structure (s.g. C2/c) in the studied temperature range 2 K - 300 K but exhibits successive antiferromagnetic transitions at low temperature. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector k1 = (0, 0.485, 0.055) sets in at 26 K. A transition to a second antiferromagnetic structure with k2 = (0, 0, 0) takes place at 21.1 K. Moreover, a transition to a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with k3 = (0, 0.5, 0.25) occurs at 17.4 K. The magnetic structures have been determined by neutron powder diffraction using group theory analysis as a preliminary tool. Different coordinations of the Co2+ ions involved in the low-symmetry C2/c structure of Co3TeO6 render the exchange-interaction network very complex by itself. The observed magnetic phase transformations are interpreted as an evidence of competing magnetic interactions. The temperature dependent changes in the magnetic structure, derived from refinements of high-resolution neutron data, are discussed and possible mechanisms connected with the spin reorientations are described.

Magnetic states and spin-glass properties in Bi0.67Ca0.33MnO3: macroscopic ac measurements and neutron scattering

We report on the magnetic properties of the manganite Bi_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_3 (x=0.33) at low temperature. The analysis of the field expansion of the ac susceptibility and the observation of aging properties make clear that a spin glass phase appears below T = 39K, in the presence of magnetic order. Neutron scattering shows both magnetic Bragg scattering and magnetic diffusion at small angles, and confirms this coexistence. In contrast to Pr_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_3 (x=0.3-0.33) which exhibits a mesoscopic phase separation responsible for a field driven percolation, the glassy and short range ferromagnetic order observed here does not cause colossal magnetoresistance (CMR).

Structural anomalies, spin transitions and charge disproportionation in LnCoO3

The diamagnetic-paramagnetic and insulator-metal transitions in LnCoO3 perovskites (Ln = La, Y, rare earths) are reinterpreted and modeled as a two-level excitation process. In distinction to previous models, the present approach can be characterized as a LS-HS-IS (low-high-intermediate spin) scenario. The first level is the local excitation of HS Co3+ species in the LS ground state. The second excitation is based on the interatomic electron transfer between the LS/HS pairs, leading finally to a stabilization of the metallic phase based on IS Co3+. The model parameters have been quantified for Ln = La, Pr and Nd samples using the powder neutron diffraction on the thermal expansion of Co-O bonds, that is associated with the two successive spin transitions. The same model is applied to interpret the magnetic susceptibility of LaCoO3 and YCoO3.

Neutron scattering evidence for magnetic field driven abrupt magnetic and structural transitions in a phase separated manganite

Substitutions at the Mn-site of the charge-ordered Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganite is an effective way to induce abrupt jumps on the magnetic field driven magnetization curve. In order to get new insights into the origin of this remarkable feature, the Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn0.97Ga0.03O3 perovskite manganite has been studied by neutron diffraction, versus temperature and at 2.5K in an applied magnetic field up to 6 Tesla. A weak and complex antiferromagnetic order is found for the low temperature ground-state. Magnetic transitions, associated with structural ones, are evidenced for certain strengths of magnetic field, which gives rise to the step-like behavior corresponding to the magnetization curve. Small angle neutron scattering provides evidence for a nucleation process of micron size ferromagnetic domains which follows the magnetization behavior.

Crystal and magnetic structure of LaTiO3 : evidence for non-degenerate $t_{2g}$-orbitals

The crystal and magnetic structure of LaTiO3 ~ has been studied by x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques using nearly stoichiometric samples. We find a strong structural anomaly near the antiferromagnetic ordering, T$_N$=146 K. In addition, the octahedra in LaTiO3 exhibit an intrinsic distortion which implies a splitting of the t2g-levels. Our results indicate that LaTiO3 should be considered as a Jahn-Teller system where the structural distortion and the resulting level splitting are enhanced by the magnetic ordering.

First Order Transition in the Spin Dynamics of Geometrically Frustrated Yb2Ti2O7

Using neutron diffraction, 170Yb Mossbauer and muSR spectroscopies, we have examined the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 where the Yb3+ S'=1/2 ground state has planar anisotropy. Below ~0.24K, the temperature of the known specific heat lambda transition, there is no long range magnetic order. We show that the transition corresponds to a first order change in the fluctuation rate of the Yb3+ spins. Above the transition temperature, the rate, in the GHz range, follows a thermal excitation law, whereas below, the rate, in the MHz range, is essentially temperature independent indicative of a quantum fluctuation regime.

Structural and magnetic aspects of the metal insulator transition in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$

The phase diagram of Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ has been studied by neutron diffraction on powder and single-crystalline samples. The experiments reveal antiferromagnetic order and structural distortions characterized by tilts and rotations of the RuO$_6$-octahedra. There is strong evidence that the structural details of the isovalent samples tune the magnetic as well as the electronic behavior. In particular we observe for low Sr-concentration a metal insulator transition associated with a structural change and magnetic ordering.
