Classification of multi-solitons in one sense of time for the 5D energy-critical wave equation

We classify the multi-solitons, in the positive sense of time, of the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension $5$, more precisely the solutions $u(t,x)$ of the equation \[ \partial_t^2 u - \Delta u - |u|^{\frac 4{3}} u = 0, \quad (t,x)\in [T_0,\infty)\times {\mathbb R}^5, \] which satisfy the estimate \[ \left\|\nabla_{t,x} \left(u(t) - \sum_{k} W_k(t) \right) \right\|_{L^2} \lesssim t^{-\frac12^+} \quad \hbox{for all $t\gg 1$}. \] Here, $\{W_k\}_k$ is any given finite family of traveling waves, based on the explicit ground state solution \[ W(x) = \left(1+ \frac{|x|^2}{15}\right)^{-\frac32} \] with collinear two-by-two different velocities.

Rigidity results in multi-bubble dynamics for non-radial energy-critical heat equation

This paper concerns the classification of asymptotic behaviors in multi-bubble dynamics for the energy-critical nonlinear heat equations in large dimensions $N\geq7$ without symmetry. This multi-bubble dynamics appears naturally at least for a sequence of times in view of soliton resolution. We assume each bubble is given by the scalings and translations of $\pm W$ with (localized) non-colliding conditions for a sequence of times, where $W$ is the ground state. The case of one soliton was previously established and in particular there is no blow-up. We consider the case of $J\geq2$ solitons, where we expect only infinite-time blow-up. We are able to identify three different scenarios, where we have a continuous-in-time resolution with an unexpected universal blow-up speed. The first one is when one scaling is much larger than the others. In this case, one bubble does not concentrate (hence stabilize) and the other bubbles concentrate with the universal blow-up speed $t^{-2/(N-6)}$ together with strong sign constraints. Next, assuming we are not in the first scenario, we establish a non-degenerate condition on the positions of bubbles to obtain that all bubbles concentrate with the universal blow-up speed $t^{-1/(N-4)}$. The last case we consider is a degenerate, but not too much degenerate, scenario. Here again, we obtain that all bubbles concentrate with the universal blow-up speed $t^{-1/(N-3)}$. This last rate has not been discovered before. Our theorem covers the case of four or less bubbles and we provide the construction of examples. To our knowledge, this is the first classification result in the non-radial multi-bubble dynamics, where both the scales, positions, and signs enter the dynamics nontrivially.

Existence of multi-solitons with any parameters for the 5D energy critical wave equation

For the focusing, energy critical wave equation in dimension 5, we construct multi-solitons with any number of solitons, any choice of signs, speeds, scaling parameters and translation parameters. This requires to revisit in depth previous constructions of multi-solitons based on a unidirectional approach, to fully take into account the dimension of the space and the possibility for solitons to move in any direction. Then, as a consequence of this more general construction and of the arguments developed in a previous article, the inelastic nature of any collision of solitons is proved under a non-cancellation assumption on the parameters.

On classification of global dynamics for energy-critical equivariant harmonic map heat flows and radial nonlinear heat equation

We consider the global dynamics of finite energy solutions to energy-critical equivariant harmonic map heat flow (HMHF) and radial nonlinear heat equation (NLH). It is known that any finite energy equivariant solutions to (HMHF) decompose into finitely many harmonic maps (bubbles) separated by scales and a body map, as approaching to the maximal time of existence. Our main result for (HMHF) gives a complete classification of their dynamics for equivariance indices $D\geq3$; (i) they exist globally in time, (ii) the number of bubbles and signs are determined by the energy class of the initial data, and (iii) the scales of bubbles are asymptotically given by a universal sequence of rates up to scaling symmetry. In parallel, we also obtain a complete classification of $\dot{H}^{1}$-bounded radial solutions to (NLH) in dimensions $N\geq7$, building upon soliton resolution for such solutions. To our knowledge, this provides the first rigorous classification of bubble tree dynamics within symmetry. We introduce a new approach based on the energy method that does not rely on maximum principle. The key ingredient of the proof is a monotonicity estimate near any bubble tree configurations, which in turn requires a delicate construction of modified multi-bubble profiles also.

On channels of energy for the radial linearised energy critical wave equation in the degenerate case

Channels of energy estimates control the energy of an initial data from that which it radiates outside a light cone. For the linearised energy critical wave equation they have been obtained in the radial case in odd dimensions, first in $3$ dimensions by Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle (Camb. J. Math., 2013), then for general odd dimensions by the same authors (Comm. Math. Phys., 2020). We consider even dimensions, for which such estimates are known to fail (C\^ote, Kenig and Schlag, Math. Ann., 2014). We propose a weaker version of these estimates, around a single ground state as well as around a multisoliton. This allows us to prove the soliton resolution conjecture in six dimensions (Collot, Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle, arXiv preprint 2201.01848, 2022 versions 1 and 2).

On classification of non-radiative solutions for various energy-critical wave equations

Non-radiative solutions of energy critical wave equations are such that their energy in an exterior region $|x|>R+|t|$ vanishes asymptotically in both time directions. This notion, introduced by Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle (J. Eur. Math. Soc., 2011), has been key in solving the soliton resolution conjecture for these equations in the radial case. In the present paper, we first classify their asymptotic behaviour at infinity, showing that they correspond to a $k$-parameters family of solutions where $k$ depends on the dimension. This generalises the previous results (Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle, Camb. J. Math., 2013 and Duyckaerts, Kenig, Martel and Merle, Comm. Math. Phys., 2022) in three and four dimensions. We then establish a unique maximal extension of these solutions.

On degenerate blow-up profiles for the subcritical semilinear heat equation

We consider the semilinear heat equation with a superlinear power nonlinearity in the Sobolev subcritical range. We construct a solution which blows up in finite time only at the origin, with a completely new blow-up profile, which is cross-shaped. Our method is general and extends to the construction of other solutions blowing up only at the origin, with a large variety of blow-up profiles, degenerate or not.

Soliton resolution for the radial quadratic wave equation in six space dimensions

We consider the quadratic semilinear wave equation in six dimensions. This energy critical problem admits a ground state solution, which is the unique (up to scaling) positive stationary solution. We prove that any spherically symmetric solution, that remains bounded in the energy norm, evolves asymptotically to a sum of decoupled modulated ground states, plus a radiation term. As a by-product of the approach we prove the non-existence of multisoliton solutions that do not emit any radiation. The proof follows the method initiated for large odd dimensions by the last three authors, reducing the problem to ruling out the existence of such non-radiative multisolitons, by deriving a contradiction from a finite dimensional system of ordinary differential equations governing their modulation parameters. In comparison, the difficulty in six dimensions is the failure of certain channel of energy estimates and the related existence of a linear resonance. The main novelties are the use of new channel of energy estimates, as well as the classification of non-radiative solutions with small energy.

Behavior rigidity near non-isolated blow-up points for the semilinear heat equation

We consider the semilinear heat equation with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity in dimension $N=2$, and $u(x,t)$ a solution which blows up in finite time $T$. Given a non isolated blow-up point $a$, we assume that the Taylor expansion of the solution near $(a,T)$ obeys some degenerate situation labeled by some even integer $m(a)\ge 4$. If we have a sequence $a_n \to a$ as $n\to \infty$, we show after a change of coordinates and the extraction of a subsequence that either $a_{n,1}-a_1 = o((a_{n,2}-a_2)^2)$ or $|a_{n,1}-a_1||a_{n,2}-a_2|^{-\beta} |\log|a_{n,2}-a_2||^{-\alpha} \to L> 0$ for some $L>0$, %up to extracting a subsequence still denoted the same, where $\alpha$ and $\beta$ enjoy a finite number of rational values with $\beta \in(0,2]$ and $L$ is a solution of a polynomial equation depending on the coefficients of the Taylor expansion of the solution. If $m(a)=4$, then $\alpha=0$ and either $\beta=3/2$ or $\beta =2$.

Soliton resolution for critical co-rotational wave maps and radial cubic wave equation

In this paper we prove the soliton resolution conjecture for all times, for all solutions in the energy space, of the co-rotational wave map equation. To our knowledge this is the first such result for all initial data in the energy space for a wave-type equation. We also prove the corresponding results for radial solutions, which remain bounded in the energy norm, of the cubic (energy-critical) nonlinear wave equation in space dimension 4.

On smooth self similar solutions to the compressible Euler equations

We consider the barotropic Euler equations in dimension d>1 with decaying density at spatial infinity. The phase portrait of the nonlinear ode governing the equation for spherically symmetric self-similar solutions has been introduced in the pioneering work of Guderley. It allows to construct global profiles of the self-similar problem, which however turn out to be generically non-smooth across the associated light (acoustic) cone. In a suitable range of barotropic laws and for a sequence of quantized speeds accumulating to a critical value, we prove the existence of non-generic C^\infty self-similar solutions with suitable decay at infinity. The C^\infty regularity is used in a fundamental way in the companion papers \cite{MRRSnls}, \cite{MRRSfluid} to control the associated linearized operator, and construct finite energy blow up solutions of respectively the defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in dimension $5\le d\le9$, and the isentropic ideal compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in dimensions d=2,3.

On blow up for the energy super critical defocusing non linear Schr\"odinger equations

We consider the energy supercritical defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation $i\partial_tu+\Delta u-u|u|^{p-1}=0$ in dimension $d\ge 5$. In a suitable range of energy supercritical parameters $(d,p)$, we prove the existence of $\mathcal C^\infty$ well localized spherically symmetric initial data such that the corresponding unique strong solution blows up in finite time. Unlike other known blow up mechanisms, the singularity formation does not occur by concentration of a soliton or through a self similar solution, which are unknown in the defocusing case, but via a front mechanism. Blow up is achieved by compression in the associated hydrodynamical flow which in turn produces a highly oscillatory singularity. The front blow up profile is chosen among the countable family of $\mathcal C^\infty$ spherically symmetric self similar solutions to the compressible Euler equation whose existence and properties in a suitable range of parameters are established in the companion paper \cite{MRRSprofile}.

On the implosion of a three dimensional compressible fluid

We consider the compressible three dimensional Navier Stokes and Euler equations. In a suitable regime of barotropic laws, we construct a set of finite energy smooth initial data for which the corresponding solutions to both equations implode (with infinite density) at a later time at a point, and completely describe the associated formation of singularity. Two essential steps of the analysis are the existence of $\mathcal C^\infty$ smooth self-similar solutions to the compressible Euler equations for quantized values of the speed and the derivation of spectral gap estimates for the associated linearized flow which are addressed in the companion papers \cite{MRRSprofile, MRRSdefoc}. All blow up dynamics obtained for the Navier-Stokes problem are of type II (non self-similar).

Decay estimates for nonradiative solutions of the energy-critical focusing wave equation

Consider the energy-critical focusing wave equation in space dimension $N\geq 3$. The equation has a nonzero radial stationary solution $W$, which is unique up to scaling and sign change. It is conjectured (soliton resolution) that any radial, bounded in the energy norm solution of the equation behaves asymptotically as a sum of modulated $W$s, decoupled by the scaling, and a radiation term. A nonradiative solution of the equation is by definition a solution whose energy in the exterior $\{|x|>|t|\}$ of the wave cone vanishes asymptotically as $t\to +\infty$ and $t\to -\infty$. In a previous work (Cambridge Journal of Mathematics 2013, arXiv:1204.0031), we have proved that the only radial nonradiative solutions of the equation in three space dimensions are, up to scaling, $0$ and $\pm W$. This was crucial in the proof of soliton resolution in 3 space dimension. In this paper, we prove that the initial data of a radial nonradiative solution in odd space dimension have a prescribed asymptotic behaviour as $r\to \infty$. We will use this property for the proof of soliton resolution, for radial data, in all odd space dimensions. The proof uses the characterization of nonradiative solutions of the linear wave equation in odd space dimensions obtained by Lawrie, Liu, Schlag and the second author (Advances in Mathematics, 2015, arXiv:1409.3643) . We also study the propagation of the support of nonzero radial solutions with compactly supported initial data, and prove that these solutions cannot be nonradiative.

Soliton resolution for the radial critical wave equation in all odd space dimensions

Consider the energy-critical focusing wave equation in odd space dimension $N\geq 3$. The equation has a nonzero radial stationary solution $W$, which is unique up to scaling and sign change. In this paper we prove that any radial, bounded in the energy norm solution of the equation behaves asymptotically as a sum of modulated $W$s, decoupled by the scaling, and a radiation term. The proof essentially boils down to the fact that the equation does not have purely nonradiative multisoliton solutions. The proof overcomes the fundamental obstruction for the extension of the 3D case (treated in our previous work, Cambridge Journal of Mathematics 2013, arXiv:1204.0031) by reducing the study of a multisoliton solution to a finite dimensional system of ordinary differential equations on the modulation parameters. The key ingredient of the proof is to show that this system of equations creates some radiation, contradicting the existence of pure multisolitons.

Exterior energy bounds for the critical wave equation close to the ground state

By definition, the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution to a wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{1+N}$ is the sum of the limits as $t\to \pm\infty$ of the energy in the the exterior $\{|x|>|t|\}$ of the wave cone. In our previous work (JEMS 2012, arXiv:1003.0625), we have proved that the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution of the linear wave equation in odd space dimension $N$ is bounded from below by the conserved energy of the solution. In this article, we study the analogous problem for the linear wave equation with a potential \begin{equation} \label{abstractLW} \tag{*} \partial_t^2u+L_Wu=0,\quad L_W:=-\Delta -\frac{N+2}{N-2}W^{\frac{4}{N-2}} \end{equation} obtained by linearizing the energy critical wave equation at the ground-state solution $W$, still in odd space dimension. This equation admits nonzero solutions of the form $A+tB$, where $L_WA=L_WB=0$ with vanishing asymptotic exterior energy. We prove that the exterior energy of a solution of \eqref{abstractLW} is bounded from below by the energy of the projection of the initial data on the orthogonal complement of the space of initial data corresponding to these solutions. This will be used in a subsequent paper to prove soliton resolution for the energy-critical wave equation with radial data in all odd space dimensions. We also prove analogous results for the linearization of the energy-critical wave equation around a Lorentz transform of $W$, and give applications to the dynamics of the nonlinear equation close to the ground state in space dimensions $3$ and $5$.

On strongly anisotropic type I blow up

We consider the energy super critical 4 dimensional semilinear heat equation $$\partial_tu=\Delta u+|u|^{p-1}u, \ \ x\in \Bbb R^4, \ \ p>5.$$ Let $\Phi(r)$ be a three dimensional radial self similar solution for the three supercritical probmem as exhibited and studied in \cite{CRS}. We show the finite codimensional transversal stability of the corresponding blow up solution by exhibiting a manifold of finite energy blow up solutions of the four dimensional problem with cylindrical symmetry which blows up as $$u(t,x)\sim \frac{1}{(T-t)^{\frac{1}{p-1}}}U(t,Y), \ \ Y=\frac{x}{\sqrt{T-t}}$$ with the profile $U$ given to leading order by $$U(t,Y)\sim\frac{1}{(1+b(t)z^2)^{\frac 1{p-1}}}\Phi\left(\frac{r}{\sqrt{1+b(t)z^2}}\right), \ \ Y=(r,z), \ \ b(t)=\frac{c}{|\log(T-t)|}$$ corresponding to a constant profile $\Phi(r)$ in the $z$ direction reconnected to zero along the moving free boundary $|z(t)|\sim \frac{1}{\sqrt{b}}\sim \sqrt{|\log (T-t)|}.$ Our analysis revisits the stability analysis of the self similar ODE blow up \cite{BK, MZduke,MZgaffa} and combines it with the study of the Type I self similar blow up \cite{CRS}. This provides a robust canonical framework for the construction of strongly anisotropic blow up bubbles.

On strongly anisotropic type II blow up

We consider the energy super critical $d+1$ dimensional semilinear heat equation $$\partial_tu=\Delta u+u^{p}, \ \ x\in \Bbb R^{d+1}, \ \ p\geq 3, \ d\geq 14.$$ A fundamental open problem on this canonical nonlinear model is to understand the possible blow up profiles appearing after renormalization of a singularity. We exhibit in this paper a new scenario corresponding to the first example of strongly anisotropic blow up bubble: the solution displays a completely different behaviour depending on the considered direction in space. A fundamental step of the analysis is to solve the {\it reconnection problem} in order to produce finite energy solutions which is the heart of the matter. The corresponding anistropic mechanism is expected to be of fundamental importance in other settings in particular in fluid mechanics. The proof relies on a new functional framework for the construction and stabilization of type II bubbles in the parabolic setting using energy estimates only, and allows us to exhibit new unexpected blow up speeds.
