Coexact $1$-form spectral gaps of hyperbolic rational homology spheres

We discuss a construction of families of hyperbolic rational homology spheres with coexact $1$-form spectral gap uniformly bounded below which is well-suited for explicit computations. Using this, we provide several disjoint intervals containing a limit point of such spectral gaps, the rightmost of which is $[0.8196,0.8277]$. Furthermore, we also exhibit a family of arithmetic examples, answering a question of Abdurrahman-Adve-Giri-Lowe-Zung.

Dirac spectral flow and Floer theory of hyperbolic three-manifolds

We study the interplay between hyperbolic geometry and monopole Floer homology for a closed oriented three-manifold $Y$ with $b_1=1$ equipped with a torsion spin$^c$ structure $\mathfrak{s}$. We show that, under favorable circumstances, one can completely describe the Floer theory of $(Y,\mathfrak{s})$ purely in terms of geometric data such as the lengths and holonomies of closed geodesics. In particular, we perform the first computations of monopole Floer chain complexes with non-trivial homology for hyperbolic three-manifolds. The examples we consider admit no irreducible solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations, and the non-triviality of the Floer homology groups is a consequence of the geometry of the $1$-parameter family of Dirac operators associated to flat spin$^c$ connections. The main technical challenge is to understand explicitly how the Dirac eigenvalues with small absolute value cross the value zero in this family; we tackle this using Fourier analytic tools via the corresponding $1$-parameter family of odd Selberg trace formulas and its derivative.

Adjunction inequalities and the Davis hyperbolic four-manifold

The Davis hyperbolic four-manifold $\mathcal{D}$ is not almost-complex, so that its Seiberg-Witten invariants corresponding to zero-dimensional moduli spaces are vanishing by definition. In this paper, we show that all the Seiberg-Witten invariants involving higher-dimensional moduli spaces also vanish. Our proof involves the adjunction inequalities corresponding to 864 genus two totally geodesic surfaces embedded inside $\mathcal{D}$.

On integral rigidity in Seiberg-Witten theory

We introduce a framework to prove integral rigidity results for the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed $4$-manifold $X$ containing a non-separating hypersurface $Y$ satisfying suitable (chain-level) Floer theoretic conditions. As a concrete application, we show that if $X$ has the homology of a four-torus, and it contains a non-separating three-torus, then the sum of all Seiberg-Witten invariants of $X$ is determined in purely cohomological terms. Our results can be interpreted as $(3+1)$-dimensional versions of Donaldson's TQFT approach to the formula of Meng-Taubes, and build upon a subtle interplay between irreducible solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations on $X$ and reducible ones on $Y$ and its complement. Along the way, we provide a concrete description of the associated graded map (for a suitable filtration) of the map on $\overline{HM}_*$ induced by a negative cobordism between three-manifolds, which might be of independent interest.

Divergence-free framings of three-manifolds via eigenspinors

Gromov used convex integration to prove that any closed orientable three-manifold equipped with a volume form admits three divergence-free vector fields which are linearly independent at every point. We provide an alternative proof of this (inspired by Seiberg-Witten theory) using geometric properties of eigenspinors in three dimensions. In fact, our proof shows that for any Riemannian metric, one can find three divergence-free vector fields such that at every point they are orthogonal and have the same non-zero length.

Topology of the Dirac equation on spectrally large three-manifolds

The interaction between spin geometry and positive scalar curvature has been extensively explored. In this paper, we instead focus on Dirac operators on Riemannian three-manifolds for which the spectral gap $\lambda_1^*$ of the Hodge Laplacian on coexact $1$-forms is large compared to the curvature. As a concrete application, we show that for any spectrally large metric on the three-torus $T^3$, the locus in the torus of flat $U(1)$-connections where (a small generic pertubation of) the corresponding twisted Dirac operator has kernel is diffeomorphic to a two-sphere. While the result only involves linear operators, its proof relies on the non-linear analysis of the Seiberg-Witten equations. It follows from a more general understanding of transversality in the context of the monopole Floer homology of a torsion spin$^c$ three-manifold $(Y,\mathfrak{s})$ with a large spectral gap $\lambda_1^*$. When $b_1>0$, this gives rise to a very rich setup and we discuss a framework to describe explicitly in certain situations the Floer homology groups of $(Y,\mathfrak{s})$ in terms of the topology of the family of Dirac operators parametrized by the torus of flat $U(1)$-connections on $Y$.

A remark on taut foliations and Floer homology

It is well-known that the reduced Floer homology of a rational homology sphere admitting a taut foliation does not vanish. We strengthen this by showing that (when thought of as an $\mathbb{F}[U]$-module) it also admits a direct $\mathbb{F}$-summand. Hence, one could potentially detect counterexamples to the foliation part of the $L$-space conjecture via purely Floer theoretic computations.

Homology cobordism and the geometry of hyperbolic three-manifolds

A major challenge in the study of the structure of the three-dimensional homology cobordism group is to understand the interaction between hyperbolic geometry and homology cobordism. In this paper, for a hyperbolic homology sphere $Y$ we derive explicit bounds on the relative grading between irreducible solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations and the reducible one in terms of the spectral and Riemannian geometry of $Y$. Using this, we provide explicit bounds on some numerical invariants arising in monopole Floer homology (and its $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant refinement). We apply this to study the subgroups of the homology cobordism group generated by hyperbolic homology spheres satisfying certain natural geometric constraints.

Lectures on families of Dirac operators and applications

These are the notes for a minicourse taught at the 2022 ICTP summer school `Frontiers in Geometry and Topology'. The goal is to introduce families of Dirac operators and how they can be used to study interactions between geometry and topology. In particular, we discuss the index theorem for families of twisted Dirac operators, and its applications to metrics of positive scalar curvature and the three-dimensional Weinstein conjecture.

Monopole Floer homology and invariant theta characteristics

We describe a relationship between the monopole Floer homology of three-manifolds and the geometry of Riemann surfaces. Consider an automorphism $\varphi$ of a compact Riemann surface $\Sigma$ with quotient $\mathbb{P}^1$. There is a natural correspondence between theta characteristics $L$ on $\Sigma$ which are invariant under $\varphi$ and self-conjugate spin$^c$ structures $\mathfrak{s}_L$ on the mapping torus $M_{\varphi}$ of $\varphi$. We show that the monopole Floer homology groups of $(M_{\varphi},\mathfrak{s}_L)$ are explicitly determined by the eigenvalues of the (lift of the) action of $\varphi$ on $H^0(L)$, the space of holomorphic sections of $L$. Decategorifying our computation, we also obtain that the dimension of $H^0(L)$ equals the Reidemeister-Turaev torsion of $(M_{\varphi},\mathfrak{s}_L)$. Finally, we combine our description with the Atiyah-Bott $G$-spin theorem to provide explicit computations of the Floer homology groups for all automorphisms $\varphi$ of prime order in terms of ramification data.

Monopoles, twisted integral homology, and Hirsch algebras

We provide an explicit computation over the integers of the bar version $\overline{HM}_*$ of the monopole Floer homology of a three-manifold in terms of a new invariant associated to its triple cup product called extended cup homology. This refines previous computations over fields of characteristic zero by Kronheimer and Mrowka, who established a relationship to Atiyah and Segal's twisted de Rham cohomology, and characteristic two by Lidman using surgery techniques in Heegaard Floer theory. In order to do so, we first develop a general framework to study the homotopical properties of the cohomology of a dga twisted with respect a particular kind of Maurer-Cartan element called twisting sequence. Then, for dgas equipped with the additional structure of a Hirsch algebra (which consists of certain higher operations that measure the failure of strict commutativity, and related associativity properties), we develop a product on twisting sequences and a theory of rational characteristic classes. These are inspired by Kraines' classical construction of higher Massey products and may be of independent interest. We then compute the most important infinite family of such higher operations explicitly for the minimal cubical realization of the torus. Building on the work of Kronheimer and Mrowka, the determination of $\overline{HM}_*$ follows from these computations and certain functoriality properties of the rational characteristic classes.

Closed geodesics and Fr{\o}yshov invariants of hyperbolic three-manifolds

Froyshov invariants are numerical invariants of rational homology three-spheres derived from gradings in monopole Floer homology. In the past few years, they have been employed to solve a wide range of problems in three and four-dimensional topology. In this paper, we look at connections with hyperbolic geometry for the class of minimal $L$-spaces. In particular, we study relations between Froyshov invariants and closed geodesics using ideas from analytic number theory. We discuss two main applications of our approach. First, we derive effective upper bounds for the Froyshov invariants of minimal hyperbolic $L$-spaces purely in terms of volume and injectivity radius. Second, we describe an algorithm to compute Froyshov invariants of minimal $L$-spaces in terms of data arising from hyperbolic geometry. As a concrete example of our method, we compute the Froyshov invariants for all spin$^c$ structures on the Seifert-Weber dodecahedral space. Along the way, we also prove several results about the eta invariants of the odd signature and Dirac operators on hyperbolic three-manifolds which might be of independent interest.

Monopole Floer homology, eigenform multiplicities and the Seifert-Weber dodecahedral space

We show that the Seifert-Weber dodecahedral space $\mathsf{SW}$ is an $L$-space. The proof builds on our work relating Floer homology and spectral geometry of hyperbolic three-manifolds. A direct application of our previous techniques runs into difficulties arising from the computational complexity of the problem. We overcome this by exploiting the large symmetry group and the arithmetic and tetrahedral group structure of $\mathsf{SW}$ to prove that small eigenvalues on coexact $1$-forms must have large multiplicity.

Indefinite Stein fillings and Pin(2)-monopole Floer homology

Given a spin$^c$ rational homology sphere $(Y,\mathfrak{s})$ with $\mathfrak{s}$ self-conjugate and for which the reduced monopole Floer homology $\mathit{HM}_{\bullet}(Y,\mathfrak{s})$ has rank one, we provide obstructions to the intersection forms of its Stein fillings which are not negative definite. The proof of this result (and of its natural generalizations we discuss) uses $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-monopole Floer homology.

Monopole Floer homology and SOLV geometry

We study the monopole Floer homology of a SOLV rational homology sphere Y from the point of view of spectral theory. Applying ideas of Fourier analysis on solvable groups, we show that for suitable SOLV metrics on Y, small regular perturbations of the Seiberg-Witten equations do not admit irreducible solutions; in particular, this provides a geometric proof that Y is an L-space.

Hyperbolic four-manifolds with vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants

We show the existence of hyperbolic 4-manifolds with vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants, addressing a conjecture of Claude LeBrun. This is achieved by showing, using results in geometric and arithmetic group theory, that certain hyperbolic 4-manifolds contain L-spaces as hypersurfaces.

The Seiberg-Witten equations and the length spectrum of hyperbolic three-manifolds

We exhibit the first examples of hyperbolic three-manifolds for which the Seiberg-Witten equations do not admit any irreducible solution. Our approach relies on hyperbolic geometry in an essential way; it combines an explicit upper bound for the first eigenvalue on coexact $1$-forms $\lambda_1^*$ on rational homology spheres which admit irreducible solutions together with a version of the Selberg trace formula relating the spectrum of the Laplacian on coexact $1$-forms with the volume and complex length spectrum of a hyperbolic three-manifold. Using these relationships, we also provide precise numerical bounds on $\lambda_1^*$ for several hyperbolic rational homology spheres.

Non-formality in $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-monopole Floer homology

In previous work, we introduced a natural $\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$-structure on the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-monopole Floer chain complex of a closed, oriented three-manifold $Y$, and showed that it is non-formal in the simplest case in which $Y$ is the three-sphere $S^3$. In this paper, we provide explicit descriptions of several Massey products induced on homology, and discuss how they can be used to compute the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-monopole Floer homology of connected sums in many concrete examples.
