Toward two dimensional MoS2 electrets

Here, we show that controlled sulfur vacancy engineering converts monolayer MoS2 into an electret, imparting the ability to store quasi-permanent electrostatic charge within a single atomic layer. Sulfur vacancies are generated with submicrometer spatial control by stamp-assisted electrode-free electrochemical nanolithography, yielding programmable defect densities from 10 10 to 10 13 1 cm-2. The resulting vacancy domains act as deep electron traps and produce surface charge densities up to 1 uCcm-2, with charge retention in the order of hundreds days under ambient conditions. Kelvin probe and electric force microscopies directly reveal stable electrostatic patterns that replicate the lithographic motif. The same vacancy landscape simultaneously defines exciton-quenching regions, generating co-localized optical and electrostatic contrast and reducing the apparent exciton lifetime from 15 ns to 180 ps through enhanced nonradiative recombination. The persistence of the optical response over one year identifies sulfur vacancies, rather than transient charge states, as the origin of the patterned functionality. These results establish defect-engineered MoS2 as the first two-dimensional electret and demonstrate that atomic vacancies can be exploited as functional elements for encoding electrostatic and excitonic behavior in a single atomic layer.

Transient quantum isolation and critical behavior in the magnetization dynamics of half-metallic manganites

We combine time resolved pump-probe Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect and Photoelectron Spectroscopy experiments supported by theoretical analysis to determine the relaxation dynamics of delocalized electrons in half-metallic ferromagnetic manganite $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$. We observe that the half-metallic character of $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$ determines the timescale of both the electronic phase transition and the quenching of magnetization, revealing a quantum isolation of the spin system in double exchange ferromagnets extending up to hundreds of picoseconds. We demonstrate the use of time-resolved hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-HAXPES) as a unique tool to single out the evolution of strongly correlated electronic states across a second-order phase transition in a complex material.

Observation of Distinct Bulk and Surface Chemical Environments in a Topological Insulator under Magnetic doping

The influence of magnetic dopants on the electronic and chemical environments in topological insulators (TIs) is a key factor when considering possible spintronic applications based on topological surface state properties. Here we provide spectroscopic evidence for the presence of distinct chemical and electronic behavior for surface and bulk magnetic doping of Bi2Te3. The inclusion of Mn in the bulk of Bi2Te3 induces a genuine dilute ferromagnetic state, with reduction of the bulk band gap as the Mn content is increased. Deposition of Fe on the Bi2Te3 surface, on the other hand, favors the formation of iron telluride already at coverages as low as 0.07 monolayer, as a consequence of the reactivity of the Te-rich surface. Our results identify the factors that need to be controlled in the realization of magnetic nanosystems and interfaces based on TIs.

Conditions for the growth of smooth La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films by pulsed electron ablation

We report on the optimisation of the growth conditions of manganite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films prepared by Channel Spark Ablation (CSA). CSA belongs to pulsed electron deposition methods and its energetic and deposition parameters are quite similar to those of pulsed laser deposition. The method has been already proven to provide manganite films with good magnetic properties, but the films were generally relatively rough (a few nm coarseness). Here we show that increasing the oxygen deposition pressure with respect to previously used regimes, reduces the surface roughness down to unit cell size while maintaining a robust magnetism. We analyse in detail the effect of other deposition parameters, like accelerating voltage, discharging energy, and temperature and provide on this basis a set of optimal conditions for the growth of atomically flat films. The thicknesses for which atomically flat surface was achieved is as high as about 10-20 nm, corresponding to films with room temperature magnetism. We believe such magnetic layers represent appealing and suitable electrodes for various spintronic devices.

Magnetic Proximity Effect as a Pathway to Spintronic Applications of Topological Insulators

Spin-based electronics in topological insulators (TIs) is favored by the long spin coherence1,2 and consequently fault-tolerant information storage. Magnetically doped TIs are ferromagnetic up to 13 K,3 well below any practical operating condition. Here we demonstrate that the long range ferromagnetism at ambient temperature can be induced in Bi2-xMnxTe3 by the magnetic proximity effect through deposited Fe overlayer. This result opens a new path to interface-controlled ferromagnetism in TI-based spintronic devices.
