Testing and Diagnosing Parameter Miscalibration in Probabilistic Error Cancellation via Direct Fidelity Estimation

Probabilistic Error Cancellation (PEC) is a standard technique for mitigating noise in quantum computations, but its unbiasedness relies on accurate knowledge of the underlying noise parameters. In practice, these parameters are inferred from experimental data and may be inaccurate. We introduce a protocol that tests PEC parameter consistency on hardware by applying Direct Fidelity Estimation (DFE) to the effective mitigated state. The resulting DFE overlap serves not only as a witness of parameter miscalibration but, under appropriate conditions, also reveals whether the PEC parameters have been overestimated or underestimated. We establish this behavior for arbitrary circuits under global depolarizing noise and for Clifford circuits under general Pauli-stochastic noise. For arbitrary circuits subject to Pauli-stochastic noise, the underestimation result holds generally, while the corresponding overestimation result is established perturbatively for sufficiently small consistent miscalibrations under an additional nondegeneracy condition. We further show that the purity of the effective mitigated operator provides a more general diagnostic, allowing the miscalibration direction to be identified for arbitrary circuits and arbitrary parameter deviations. Finally, we describe a two-copy PEC procedure for measuring this quantity and show that, together with the DFE overlap, it determines the Hilbert-Schmidt distance from the ideal state. The sampling overhead incurred by our protocol is the same as that of PEC, and we discuss strategies to improve it.

Towards solving industrial integer linear programs with Decoded Quantum Interferometry

Optimization via decoded quantum interferometry (DQI) has recently gained a great deal of attention as a promising avenue for solving optimization problems using quantum computers. In this paper, we apply DQI to an industrial optimization problem in the automotive industry: the vehicle option-package pricing problem. Our main contributions are 1) formulating the industrial problem as an integer linear program (ILP), 2) converting the ILP into instances of max-XORSAT, and 3) developing a detailed quantum circuit implementation for belief propagation, a heuristic algorithm for decoding LDPC codes. Thus, we provide a full implementation of the DQI algorithm using Belief Propagation, which can be applied to any industrially relevant ILP by first transforming it into a max-XORSAT instance. We also evaluate the effectiveness of our implementation by benchmarking it against both Gurobi and a random sampling baseline.

Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer State Representation and Pairing in the Fermionic Tonks-Girardeau Gas

We introduce an alternative expression for the ground state wave function of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas. Our wave function is constructed based on the occupation numbers and natural orbitals of the one-body density matrix. We demonstrate that the newly found wave function describes the ground state of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas under any external potential. By expressing the proposed wave function in the framework of second quantization, we show that the ground state of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas is a number-conserving Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state. We provide explicit expressions for the corresponding coefficients that describe the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas as a number-conserving BCS state. Additionally, the suitable form of the proposed wave function in second quantization allows us to derive the necessary expectation values to experimentally detect pairing in the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas. With this, we prove and show how to detect that the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas not only exhibits non-trivial quantum correlations but is also a paired state.

Universal composite boson formation in strongly interacting one-dimensional fermionic systems

Attractive $p$-wave one-dimensional fermions are studied in the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau regime in which the diagonal properties are shared with those of an ideal Bose gas. We study the off-diagonal properties and present analytical expressions for the eigenvalues of the one-body density matrix. One striking aspect is the universality of the occupation numbers which are independent of the specific shape of the external potential. We show that the occupation of natural orbitals occurs in pairs, indicating the formation of composite bosons, each consisting of two attractive fermions. The formation of composite bosons sheds light on the pairing mechanism of the system orbitals, yielding a total density equal to that of a Bose-Einstein condensate.
