Influence maximization in complex networks through optimal percolation

The whole frame of interconnections in complex networks hinges on a specific set of structural nodes, much smaller than the total size, which, if activated, would cause the spread of information to the whole network [1]; or, if immunized, would prevent the diffusion of a large scale epidemic [2,3]. Localizing this optimal, i.e. minimal, set of structural nodes, called influencers, is one of the most important problems in network science [4,5]. Despite the vast use of heuristic strategies to identify influential spreaders [6-14], the problem remains unsolved. Here, we map the problem onto optimal percolation in random networks to identify the minimal set of influencers, which arises by minimizing the energy of a many-body system, where the form of the interactions is fixed by the non-backtracking matrix [15] of the network. Big data analyses reveal that the set of optimal influencers is much smaller than the one predicted by previous heuristic centralities. Remarkably, a large number of previously neglected weakly-connected nodes emerges among the optimal influencers. These are topologically tagged as low-degree nodes surrounded by hierarchical coronas of hubs, and are uncovered only through the optimal collective interplay of all the influencers in the network. Eventually, the present theoretical framework may hold a larger degree of universality, being applicable to other hard optimization problems exhibiting a continuous transition from a known phase [16].

Replica Theory and Spin Glasses

These are notes from the lectures of Giorgio Parisi given at the autumn school "Statistical Physics, Optimization, Inference, and Message-Passing Algorithm", that took place in Les Houches, France from Monday September 30th, 2013, till Friday October 11th, 2013. The school was organized by Florent Krzakala from UPMC and ENS Paris, Federico Ricci-Tersenghi from "La Sapienza" Roma, Lenka Zdeborová from CEA Saclay and CNRS, and Riccardo Zecchina from Politecnico Torino. The first lecture contains an introduction to the replica method, along with a concrete application to the computation of the eigenvalue distribution of random matrices in the GOE. In the second lecture, the solution of the SK model is derived, along with the phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking (RSB). In the third part, the physical meaning of the RSB is explained. The ultrametricity of the space of pure states emerges as a consequence of the hierarchical RSB scheme. Moreover, it is shown how some low temperature properties of physical observables can be derived by invoking the stochastic stability principle. Lecture four contains some rigorous results on the SK model: the existence of the thermodynamic limit, and the proof of the exactness of the hierarchical RSB solution.

One-dimensional disordered Ising models by replica and cavity methods

Using a formalism based on the spectral decomposition of the replicated transfer matrix for disordered Ising models, we obtain several results that apply both to isolated one-dimensional systems and to locally tree-like graph and factor graph (p-spin) ensembles. We present exact analytical expressions, which can be efficiently approximated numerically, for many types of correlation functions and for the average free energies of open and closed finite chains. All the results achieved, with the exception of those involving closed chains, are then rigorously derived without replicas, using a probabilistic approach with the same flavour of cavity method.

Finite size corrections to disordered Ising models on Random Regular Graphs

We derive the analytical expression for the first finite size correction to the average free energy of disordered Ising models on random regular graphs. The formula can be physically interpreted as a weighted sum over all non self-intersecting loops in the graph, the weight being the free-energy shift due to the addition of the loop to an infinite tree.

Large Deviations of Correlation Functions in Random Magnets

We present a large deviations theory of the spin-spin correlation functions in the Random Field Ising Model on the Bethe lattice, both at finite and zero temperature. Rare events of atypically correlated variables are particularly important at the critical point: the phase transition is driven by few pairs of strongly correlated spins, while the majority remains basically uncorrelated. At the zero temperature critical point the number of spin pairs correlated over a distance L is shown to be no longer exponential, but only linear in the spins separation.

Anomalous finite size corrections in random field models

The presence of a random magnetic field in ferromagnetic systems leads, in the broken phase, to an anomalous $O(\sqrt{1/N})$ convergence of some thermodynamic quantities to their asymptotic limits. Here we show a general method, based on the replica trick, to compute analytically the $O(\sqrt{1/N})$ finite size correction to the average free energy. We apply this method to two mean field Ising models, fully connected and random regular graphs, and compare the results to exact numerical algorithms. We argue that this behaviour is present in finite dimensional models as well.

Finite size corrections to disordered systems on Erdös-Rényi random graphs

We study the finite size corrections to the free energy density in disorder spin systems on sparse random graphs, using both replica theory and cavity method. We derive an analytical expressions for the $O(1/N)$ corrections in the replica symmetric phase as a linear combination of the free energies of open and closed chains. We perform a numerical check of the formulae on the Random Field Ising Model at zero temperature, by computing finite size corrections to the ground state energy density.
